The 1992 California Republican presidential primary was held on June 2, 1992, as a part of the Republican Party's statewide nomination process for the upcoming presidential election. President George H. W. Bush of Texas gained nearly three-fourths of the vote against political commentator and former White House Communications Director Pat Buchanan of Virginia.
Bush would go on to win the nomination but would lose the general election to the Democratic ticket of Governor Bill Clinton of Arkansas and Senator Al Gore of Tennessee. Bush would also be the first Republican to lose the state of California in the general election since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964.
