It was released as a single in February 1988. The song was most successful in the US, going to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks, behind, for a single week each, "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car" by Billy Ocean and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" by Whitney Houston. "Devil Inside" then went on to peak at #47 in the United Kingdom, #20 in France, #25 in Ireland, #6 in Australia and #3 in Canada.

Guitarist and saxophone player Kirk Pengilly stated in an interview that he did not like the music video for "Devil Inside," because he thought that it was "too American."[citation needed]

The video was filmed in Balboa, California and directed by Joel Schumacher.[citation needed]

The song was featured in the film Rock Star and TV show Hindsight.[citation needed]

On 19 March 2014, HBO released the final trailer for the fourth season of Game of Thrones, featuring London Grammar's version of "Devil Inside".[1]
