List edit

This category has been created according to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of nonviolence scholars and leaders, when the list got dissolved. That list indeed had no benefits over a category.[1]. But I think it may make sense to have such a list, if we include enough information to fill a table, similar to the one we have at Nonviolent resistance. (I just wrote a related table at Nonviolence#List of leaders and theorists of nonviolence, but that contains different columns and rows than what I have in mind here.) Would anyone like to work with me on this? — Sebastian 22:10, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

It has been suggested at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2010_August_23#Category:Scholars_and_leaders_of_nonviolence.2C_or_nonviolent_resistance that, alternatively, this category be split up between scholars and leaders, and leaders be merged into advocates. Merging leaders into advocates makes a lot of sense. In fact, the categories already overlap substantially. Scholars then could remain in this category, which could be renamed appropriately. The problem we face with categorization in this area in general is that distinctions are not that clear cut. Do we have a clear definition of what constitutes a scholar? That link is a redirect to an article where the term only occurs once in a caption, and wikt:scholar is very vague. — Sebastian 16:20, 23 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

In order to help us sort these articles, I created a table at User:SebastianHelm/List of nonviolence scholars and leaders. In doing so, I tried to be flexible, so that it can be used either as a basis for recategorization, or as the seed for a list article, as proposed above.

That list currently only represents the status quo, not how it should be. It can be seen that there is a huge overlap between these categories. Much of the overlap and distinctions between them seems to be the consequence of different editors sorting articles differently. Please feel free to edit that table so it can serve us to make the right decisions. — Sebastian 18:20, 23 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

The CFD will proceed whether you participate or not. A CFD is required to rename or delete a category, which is why one has been proposed. In case you were confused by the wording of the nomination, I've changed it to a formal proposal to delete the category and split the contents between other categories. That's something that needs to be done via CFD. Thanks. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:14, 23 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
