Accelerator physics category

edit

Hello! I would like to propose the addition of a new subcategory 'accelerator physics' to the present Category:Applied and interdisciplinary physics for the following reasons:

This category is for articles relating to particle accelerators in general. For articles about specific accelerators and colliders, please use Category:Particle physics facilities or Category:Synchrotron radiation facilities, as appropriate.

can be misleading. It is most intuitive to add particle accelerator facilities to the category particle accelerators, while articles relating to 'particle accelerators in general' (accelerator concepts like Strong focusing, Superconducting Radio Frequency, Linac) might fit better into the category 'accelerator physics'.

  • While 'experimental particle physics' might seem reasonable as only top category to particle accelerators at first, accelerators are designed and used also for e.g. medical purposes, accelerator research and solid state physics. Thus, the category 'accelerator physics' should also (non-exclusively) contain the category 'particle accelerators' as subcategory.
  • The entanglement of inventional aspects with physics and engineering (interdisciplinary topic) and the scope of accelerator physics (macroscopic, relativistic treatment and manipulation of charged particle ensembles instead of single particle interactions using quantum mechanics) may justify the new category.

Please object to this suggestion within two weeks. BR84 (talk) 11:48, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
