Hey! There is already a Category:Mormon missionaries category. This category is a duplicate. Any entries in this category should be moved to that one and this one deleted. It is much more mature and populated. — Frecklefσσt | Talk 13:24, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nope. Read the descriptions. "Mormon missionaries" is a subcategory of this one and is specifically for LDS Church missionaries. A subcategory of it is also Category:Community of Christ missionaries. This category is for individuals who don't fit nicely into either—i.e., they were Latter Day Saint missionaries prior to the 1844 succession crisis and can't rightly be classified as Community of Christ or LDS Church missionaries. Geographic subcategories

One thing I like in Category:Mormon missionaries is when I can specify Category:Mormon missionaries in Canada or Category:Mormon missionaries in the United States. Since this is a parent above all that, should it have its own geographic subcategories, such as Category:Latter Day Saint missionaries in the United States? Ambiguous category names

edit

I just discovered this category since I had assumed all Latter Day Saint movement missionaries were included in Category:Mormon missionaries. Didn't pre-1844 church members accept the informal moniker "Mormons"? Are they more distanced from the term "Mormon" than the LDS Church? Some people in other Latter Day Saint denominations are referred to as Mormon, such as R.C. Evans, formerly RLDS, in the title of his Forty Years In the Mormon Church: Why I Left It.

Anyway, I think the problem is just that I never thought the word "Mormon" in Category:Mormon missionaries referred to only The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Should it be called Category:Missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? Maybe that's too wordy for a category, but it's already used for Category:Bishops of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that is the most specific name for the church. What should be done? Does anybody else really care? Rich jj (talk) 23:46, 13 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just to add to the mix, note that Mormon missionary redirects to Missionary (LDS Church), which is specific to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I've thought about this before, and I agree that the names are not ideal and the distinction is a little bit strained, but in light of the many subcategories of Category:Mormon missionaries, I'm not sure that Category:Missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints could work across all of these. But I'm also not sure what would be better. I'm not much help here. Good Ol’factory (talk) 10:36, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
