Before the construction of the line, there was a narrow path at the place of the street. It was planned to convert the narrow path into a street in 2016 as it was impossible to build the line's viaduct on it due to its narrowness.[1] The street was constructed from the Mirpur Cantonment area through Sector 18 of Uttara to the roundabout at Diabari.[2] During the construction of the MRT Line 6, the 800 meter stretch of the street from Mirpur 12 to Uttara South metro station was constructed with broken bricks and later the narrow section was hastily finished to mark the inauguration of the line in 2022 which later becomes part of the street connecting Mirpur and Uttara. It is currently the only link road between the two areas.[3][4] The construction of this 4.5 km long street connecting Sonargaon Janapath reduced the travel time between Mirpur and Uttara.[2] During the construction of Dhaka BRT, the traffic congestion on the Airport Road increased and the vehicles started using this street as an alternative.[5] According to the master plan of the Dhaka North City Corporation's (DNCC) Detailed Area Plan, a road has been proposed from the end of the street ie Diabari Roundabout to Gazipur.[6][7] In 2022, Salehuddin Ahmed, who was involved in Dhaka's bus route rationalization project, said that this street would be included in the project's route.[8] However, the section of the street from Mirpur 12 to Uttara South metro station is not wide enough, causing inconvenience to the passengers and causing traffic jams. It was constructed by Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) and according to DNCC they are not in possession of it so they are unable to address the issue. On the other hand in 2023, M.A.N. Siddique, the then Managing Director of DMTCL, said that they had sent a letter to the authorities to take over the responsibility of the street.[4] Besides, the 800 meter long section has become prone to accidents due to collapse after its inauguration. On the other hand, in 2024, the then DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam stated that the authorities are trying to rebuild the section.[3][4] On 20 December 2023, in the minutes meeting of DNCC, a proposal was accepted to name the street after Patua Quamrul Hassan who designed the revised version of the flag of Bangladesh.[9][10] In May 2024, it was reported that the DNCC forwarded the approved proposal to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives.[7]
