Anglo-Maratha Wars

The Anglo–Maratha War were three wars fought in the Indian sub-continent between the Maratha Empire and the British East India Company over territory. They were:

The Maratha prestige had received a severe setback in the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761. But later, under the leadership of Mahadaji Scindhia of Gwalior, they soon regained their prestige and power. But this was short-lived. Mutual conflicts arose among the Maratha chiefs. The influence and power of the Peshwa also weakened. Four other Maratha kingdoms arose under different chiefs. They were the Gaekwad of Gwalior and Holkar of Indore. Mutual jealousy and rivalry of the Marathas made united action against the enemy impossible. The British took advantage of this situation and smashed the Maratha power in four wars, called the Anglo-Maratha wars.
