Background edit
Newcastle is a strong council for the Labour Party. Labour controlled the council from its creation in 1973 until 2004, when the Liberal Democrats won a majority on the council.[2] Labour retook control in 2011,[3] and have maintained a majority at every subsequent election. In the previous election, Labour won 14 seats (down 3) with 41.9% of the vote, Liberal Democrats won 10 (up 2) with 27.8%, Newcastle Independents won 2 (up 1) with 4.7%, and independents won 1 with 4.2%.
The seats up for election in 2024 were last contested in 2021; because of the delay of all local elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the seats are up for election after 3 years rather than the usual 4. In that election, Labour won 18 seats (down 2) with 39.2%, Liberal Democrats won 6 with 19.5%, independents won 2 with 7.0%, and Newcastle Independents won 2 (up 2) with 6.8%.
