On 19 April 2024 a riverboat carrying around 300 people on their way to a funeral in a village capsized in the Mpoko River, Bangui, Central African Republic.[2][3]

In many countries in Africa including the Central African Republic many vehicles are usually overcrowded with people as laws are not really enforced leading to high death tolls in vehicle accidents.[citation needed]

Faustin-Archange Touadéra announced three days of national mourning throughout the entire territory from 22 April.[4] During the three-days mourning, the flag is going to flown half-mast.[5]

Russia: The Embassy of Russia in Bangui expressed condolences to the families of the victims. In Moscow, several people laid down flowers in front of the Embassy of the Central African Republic to show support for Central Africans.[5]
United Arab Emirates: Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates expressed his condolences to both the Government and the victims families.[6]
