2023 Yatenga Province clashes

On 5 September 2023, dozens were killed in clashes in the Yatenga Province of Burkina Faso.[1] Efforts of the Burkina Faso Armed Forces to retake areas of the province from Islamist militants linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State lead to the deadliest violence of the year in the country.[2] Those killed in the fighting included 17 Burkinabé soldiers, 36 militiamen from the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland, and several dozen militants from the Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin.[3]
