Round 1 took place on 3 August, with the 55 athletes involved being split into 7 heats, 6 heats of 8 and 1 of 7 athletes.[3] The first 3 athletes in each heat ( Q ) and the next 3 fastest ( q ) qualified to the semi-final.[4] The overall results were as follows:[5]
