I am a teacher in California

I am trying to help them understand that Wikipedia is not a valid source for information. Most students don't quite get this, since pretty much everybody can update this Wiki. There are few scholars that update information or include sources. I was hoping to be able to show them that they can't actually trust all of their source for research on the internet.

Can you please let one thing go?

Hmm..no, we shouldn't be asking more users for participation. He has spammed 9 users with more or less the same message. And this is no content dispute, he's either trolling or simply dumb. I responded to all of his concerns and fixed everything he wanted, and all he did was delete my messages and went on to ask 9 users for help, as well as giving me three vandalism warnings. I only meant to reinsert the next episode title, I didn't notice the formatting issue until I looked again and changed browsers. You reverted three edits: [3] [4] [5]. I just reinserted the first one, but I see what you meant and I corrected it here. I actually thought you were referring to the second and third edits in your edit summary, but accidentally reverted the first edit, too. Eh, it's all fixed now. I think the two castaways to Exile has confused people. Wikipedia List of Notable Egyptologists

The ongoing editing of (and occasional tampering with) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Egyptologists has omitted or removed a number of notable Egyptologists who were originally listed and now contains the names of a number of individuals who are virtually unknown in the field. It might serve the readers of Wikipedia better to simply provide a link to a site such as the international directory of Egyptologists: http://www.iae.lmu.de/iae/ide/ide.htm

Maybe the best way to take care of the problem (if you would want to use your wiki editing experience as I have none!) would be to simply put a statement under the current header paragraph that a complete list of Egyptologists can be found at http://www.iae.lmu.de/iae/ide/ide.htm then change the heading "Notable Egyptologists" to "Egyptologists in Wikipedia" and have the list with a short statement such as "The following individuals, or others, have added biographical summaries to Wikipedia: This would solve the problem of the glaring omissions as well as the questionable additions. I've made some changes to the article that might help clarify that the list is incomplete. Your wording suggestions are not quite the usual style, but I think I have added in wording that follows the spirit of what you are trying to say. A lot of the lists of people on Wikipedia are often incomplete because the general style of Wikipedia is to include only individuals with articles on Wikipedia. It cuts back on people adding vanity entries or not-yet-notable people. So I am sure that some notable Egyptologists are missing as nobody has yet to write an article about them.

Upon further reading, a link to the IAE was already at the bottom of the article, but I changed it to link directly to the IDE. As for editing Wikipedia, it's quite easy as you have already figured out how to leave comments. Editing an article is not that much different. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 05:59, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

The only problem that remains is that of the individuals listed as "notable Egyptologists" who are not Egyptologists - such as the RUGBY player, Michael Rhodes. Ouch. That's bad. He's been in there since October 2007. He's gone now. I guess nobody noticed when he was added (it happens on lower profile articles like this one).

I checked everybody on the list on make sure their article stated that they were all Egyptologists, fixed a few links, sorted the list and so on. One thing that happened with the list clean up is that Abdul Latif al-Baghdadi ended up with a dead link (if you'll excuse the bad pun). I don't know the notability status of this individual. As I mentioned earlier, dead links (also known as "redlinks") are generally frowned upon in these types of lists as they are not helpful to the reader and tend to invite vanity entries. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 17:19, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Great- dropping the Rugby player is certainly a good start. So what would you like to do about the remaining ones who are not "Notable Egyptologists" - including the vanity entries and entries for people who are unheard of in the field (which together with all the notable omissions makes the list virtually useless as titled? Wouldn't it be simplest to solve that problem with at least a somewhat more accurate heading such as "Egyptologists with Entries in Wikipedia"? "Notable Egyptologists" is explicit that the individuals are notable (many of whom are not) and implicit that the list is complete (which it is not). I think we were crosstalking there. I thought you were saying that somebody currently in the list should not be in the list because they are not notable. I think what you're really saying that some Egyptologists who are notable are not in the list. Which is probably true, which is why I modified the lead the other day. I would not recommend altering the header to what you suggested because that is not the normal method of showing that the list is incomplete. As for adding to the list, that's fine if the Egyptologist has an article on Wikipedia or an outside source can be cited that they are indeed notable enough for inclusion, but just haven't been written about. I understand what you are saying here but it's actually not the omissions that are the main problem - there are really far too many qualified Egyptologists to list on the page - as may be seen in the directories such as the DNAE or the IAE Directory - The real problem is the accuracy of heading a list "Notable Egyptologists" when many obviously are not. Ah, I see. There is a set of procedures for articles to be deleted for lack of notability. See Wikipedia:Deletion policy or more specifically Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Since my knowledge about the notability (or lack there of) of the current people listed is not that great, I would not be comfortable proposing their deletion or deleting their entry from the list. You could create an account and propose deletion yourself, but since you are involved in the field of study, it might be seen as a conflict of interest. This list was informative and notable. It complied to WP policies. Your speedy delete is regrettable as Im sure that had you taken it to AfD, it would have been kept. The President thing was a stupid move on my part and I apologize. It was only after someone changed the truthful description of, "a corporate owned and sponsored attack on Barack Obama" back to ABC's PR term, "debate" and it was meant to show how absurd using words like "debate" or "President" are if they are not true. If I could give a quick suggestion, you may want to take a look at User:Gonzo fan2007/Admin to help better understand all the technical abilities given to an admin and the pages that an admin uses.

Daedalus969, honestly I would recommend waiting until you get some more experience under your belt to go through WP:RFA. RFA is very demanding and many users have very high standards. Many users will not even consider a user who doesnt have more than 3000 edits and 3 months experience, with some users having even higher standards such as certain article writing experience (FAs, GAs, FLs, etc.) and experience in admin related areas. To give you an example, when i went for my my RFA, I had 5500 edits and 9 months of solid editing, and Gogo Dodo had over 10,000 edits and 8 months of solid editing when he went for his RFA. (I would also recommend reading through our RFA's for useful info).

All that said, I think you are definitely on the right track. Some suggestions would be to find an article and try and bring it up to GA/FA status, participate in XFD's discussions, give your opinion in discussions around Wikipedia and do what you are doing, just do it for a little longer so you get more experience (i.e. run into more experiences). And on a side note, Gogo Dodo is a great example of what to do here, whether he trains you or not you can learn a lot from just watching how certain admins act and what they do on the 'pedia. I can't remember what page it is. Yeah, I think the biggie for some people is going to be the edit count and the lack of mainspace edits. But like I said, if you give User:Gonzo fan2007/Admin a good look over and click some of the links that should help a lot. Also, consider reading Wikipedia:Administrators' reading list, which will help a lot. Also, feel free to ask any questions to me or basically any admin, I know I would be glad to answer any. Thanks for the advice, I didn't really think I could do FAs and that stuff, at least not yet. Everything else you mentioned(XfDs, RC patrolling, WP:ANI, CSD tagging, etc.), I actively participate in. I patrol the RC with a script that allows me to rollback(I have the rights to do so too) the vandalish edit, and warn the user whether against vandalism or a test(*loves the Lupin script despite how buggy it is*). I think I have joined a few conversations in ANI, but I can't remember, I do know I have participated a bit in AN/I. Last but not least, I add tags where necesarry, especially for CSD, and AfD where applicall(spelling?).

While I understand your concern, I do not see how a simple article about stationery with no reference to stationery providing business and ventures can complete the picture. There is a thin line between understanding if something is meant to be for only advertising purposes or for simple information dissemination.

The article as it is does not have any practical references to stationery businesses. I think it is missing that aspect. I recommend that if not just this one particular link I mentioned, then we should add some more links perhaps, staples, officedepot etc... Adding value to the article. Awaiting... Hey Gogo, it's Dae. I am requesting help on the article Repo Man (1984 film) because another editor keeps adding this huge glaring list of trivia, which I'm sure violates WP:NOT. For a little history, the list was created by various anon IPs who were just passing through the article. Also, if you look at the article itself w/o the section, it looks great. As I'm sure you'll agree, I do NOT want to start any form of conversatoin with Daedalus here about this. I just want to set straight some untruths said about me and the situation in his statements above. Hi, I noticed that we both recently put warnings on this page, but I'm wondering if there was some confusion. You issued a seperate warning shortly after I did, apparently for an NPA at Bill Whicher. However, the only edits from that account were the vandalism to Censorship and another set of vandalisms to Mark Foley. So, while it seems a second warning was clearly warranted, I'm not sure it was the right warning. You didn't overlook anything or issue the wrong warning. My warning was for an attack page by the editor that I deleted. I usually issue the {{attack}} warning when I delete an attack page instead of the uw-vandalism* warnings. i am writing to you on matter of the deletion of the "Darren McCullagh" article. I feel that this Wikipedia page was deleted unfairly and i was not given an oppertunitiy to plead my case. In my local town of Strabane the character of Darren Mccuallagh has historic significance. Olivamine Article

Hi, I created an Olivamine article earlier today which was immediately deleted by Dekisugi. I tried using the "hangon" tag to contest it. I added a talk page and tried to justify my position for writing the article but you in turn delted my talk page based on the fact that the Olivamine page was deleted -- and the circle has closed.

Ahh, but here is the thing. It would work, as currently, my userpage is a transclusion from a .js page. I edit the page that is transcluded, I never directly edit my userpage. My table

You deleted my table on the Deadliest Catch page...

I understand that color is not the only way to convey information, but words is also not the only way to convey information. The table I created displayed information neatly that everyone can read easily. The only issue with the chart was the white text, which should be changed to black or some other form of identification should be used. The chart presently used, while it displays the information, it is not presentable. If you are concerned about those who are color blind, look around, there is blue everywhere on Wiki. I would like to put the chart back up, but I obviously need your say in this. mini survival kit

Hi,

You've made some substantial changes to the Mini survival kit page. I've offered a few comments on the talk page and am not certain that it is the correct place for them. [internal comments to the article]

You've offered some changes which seem very appropriated ie. removal of 'subjective comments' however I hold the opinion that once the topic of Mini Kits was created the discussion had already moved to the 'area' of ART as in the art of the kit or the form and function of the mini kit, or even the Art of the application of knowledge. Much of which become meritorious and significant when the space of the mini kit is limited to 12 cubic inches or less [for kits of the 'sardine can' type and size. Since the decisions would even differ in micro kits [where kits are the volume of a knife handle or a tube the size of a 2 AA maglight]

I do see the value in describing the use of items and alternate items in the kit for the encyclopedic discussion of the mini kit. Many items are carried forward from military kits into kits specifically designed for 'survival' [and even SERE and Military survival schools focus upon the Survival aspects in their training and less on the militaristic aspects] for example; what is a condom used for in a survival kit? For someone who does not know [visitor to a Wiki - encyclopedia page] it might be well to describe the uses 'waterproofing a rifle barrel' or for a person who is looking to make their own kit perhaps it is a more useful note to tell them the purpose could be better filled with a small plastic triple zip bag in their own kit 'water transport/storage/purification container' fulfilling additional applications.

Further many military kits omit the use of 'perishables' due to the storage and shelf life combined with inspection requirements. In which cases valuable space could be 'reclaimed' or even provided with supporting items, redundant backup items, and even multi use items to perform functions not covered with other kit components.

My concern or was; related to the manner of changes, the fact that the changes in structure made significant changes to the meaning of the content, and I felt it could be eliminated by editors offering examples or grammatical corrections vs. deletions.

I understand your description of how the talk page is intended to be used. I felt some discourse on the particular topic essential to form a structure for the presentation of this particular topic.

• list of contents as one possibility
• list of functional groups as another
• list of effective items maximizing space, function, and giving consideration to expense as my own preference.

I thought your censor of the material changes the meaning within the 'article'. If the article is simply a list of contents, it is subjective and necessarily inclusive of all items ever included inside a tin for mints. I [rightly or not] modified the structure of the article to 'category s'; fire and signal, water/food procurement, first aid, etc., previously lacking in the article. Also being concerned with the idea of removing others contributions [a la...Brass wire is better, 'reply' no copper is more common,...] I even allowed some errors with the idea that there should/must be some forum to collectively discuss the omissions and errors and that the contributors be able to continue/maintain their own sense of participation in assisting the placement of their contributed intellect with in the encyclopedic work.

I'm certain the editorial/ janitorial aspects of contribution are meritorious and essential. At initial inspection though this work was in need of assistance in terms of meat that is substance. I'm not convinced that the extensive 'removals' such as in this case were 'considered', necessary, or even 'building' toward the comprehensive collective work [wiki/codex]. You know honestly I thought the page was created by an industrious fourteen year old with a brother in the Special Forces, I'd really no desire to quash that spirit. But the page could use some 'assistance', and frankly it 'looked' like the 'authors' whom had tried to add edits, amendments or appendices had either walked away from the effort or had their efforts 'frustrated'....it could have been a better page long before I had shown my own interest in it.

It would seem that even this discussion would have place in the talk page for the article. Perhaps public collective works will necessarily be subject to vandal like revisions and perhaps this is the "Eternal September" in living action. It would seem that there should be means to present changes with out presenting 'finalized' pages to the audience. And for all my own inelegant-ses I appreciate the opportunity to 'discuss' it, hoping i will not be 'seen' as too-oo hostile. Thank you, Chris --Sp00nf3d (talk) 04:40, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi there,

Just a query about the Trellech page. My changes have been removed twice now in the 'current archaeology' section. This is dissapointing as the changes made highlight an important part of the previous work undertaken in the area which the current contributor refuses to recognise. This is highly frustrating as the individual responsible has undermined public perceptions of the site and has undermined over 10 years of field work. I feel it is essential for the other side of the story to be heard, yet it keeps being removed.

This is certainly an improvement, but I find it amusing that you suggest that the wording was biased. Surely completely ignoring the work of others would fall under that category as well, whilst your interviews in American publications state that the previous work was conducted in the wrong place, stated as fact when it was opinion. This is a question of the same nature as the one above, though a bit different. Every time (this has happened 3 times) I use web reflinks on History of video game consoles (seventh generation), it states that you have deleted the article to remove "personal information", and asks me if I want to re-create it. This message appears because the webpywikipedia wasn't able to fill in one of the required timestamps as gets pages in anonymous mode. MediaWiki then assumes the earliest possible date and throws the deletion-recreation message. UCI Special Collections links deleted. Why?

The Special Collections staff at the University of California, Irvine Libraries has been selectively adding external links to various Wikipedia pages to point people to relevant archival collections at our institution. We recently noticed that Gogo Dodo has removed our links (apparently tagging them as spam). These are legitimate links to collection guides that may be of use to researchers. We are new to Wikipedia and don't understand what has happened.

Why have our links been removed?

How can we avoid having our links removed in the future?

removal of links

I saw that everything that I had added to wikipedia has been deleted - not only links, but content that I felt added to the pages. (Especially the hotel sleepover part - I worked for over an hour to get those few sentences just right!) I was already working on more content for those few pages, as I am an expert in those areas. I'm glad I hadn't gotten that far.

I apologize. I did not intend to spam anyone, but thought I was offering some great information.

I am very sorry if my information was perceived that way. I would have appreciated a warning before you removed the items of content so I could have just removed the references and left the content. (And if my was submission was removed, I also probably have issue with why some of the other external links are left on those pages for the 1950's, 1980's and bunco pages.)

I ask you to assess the following proposal and to help it administer, because moving and renaming would have to be done.

Tomorrow, June 9th, 2008, Website Pros will change its name to Web.com, a company which it has acquired in 2007.

To not mess things and not overwrite existing articles I suggest to rename the existing article Web.com to Web.com (1995 - 2008) and after that rename Website Pros to Web.com.

The first paragraph of the new Web.com could begin with:

"Web.com is a name that was handed over several times from acquired companies to their new mother companies. From June 9th, 2008, the name Web.com is held by a company which called itself Website Pros from 1999 to 2008. For the history of the ex-Web.com see Web.com (1995-2008)."

An ip adress is re-adding a comment on the article that is completely out of context with the source, its misleading. You yourself reverted this previously. I told the ip adress not to add it in that context but he re added it. This ip adress in the past added other unsourced info that put Jackson in a bad light. Can you help me review this page on Shy Love before I post it?

Hi Gogo Dodo, Thanks for your kind offer to help me as I am a new wikipedia editor. I found a page on Shy Love that needs some work and I am trying out the use of a user sandbox to rearrange and expand the article. In my http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:FreakyGrrl/my_sandbox I have posted the revision I am working on. If you have time to look at it, I appreciate any tips you have for me.

First of all, as I am new, did my adding of a section on her Adult Film Career and rearrangement of details improve the article as I intended? I have been looking at similar articles of pornstars and this seems the norm.

My main question is this: after researching the issue that was noted in April 08 needs citation, under her "Personal Life" in the current Shy Love article, the paragraph that begins "In the lead-in to her appearance in an "Anal Pounding" video..." why didn't the previous editor delete/revert that information instead of requesting citation? After researching it a bit, I can find no way to substantiate it, and it seems like a vague statement that would be very difficult to reference since the editor gave no title and she has been in over 250 movies. Would it be ok to delete the statement at this point, since I have found no way to back it up?

What about even being Influential in the Math/Dance Scene of Los Angeles? Every city on the Math[type of rock] page has at least one or two names dropped. Since Gogo didn't really reply here, I'll just write one myself. He is an administrator here, a sysop, or a janitor. Whatever you want to call it, either way, what you were creating conflicted with out policies, and it even fell under the WP:CSD criteria of R3, which is one of three things.
