9.58!!!!!

OMG!!!! I never thought I'd see the day anybody could run the 100 that fast or the day when somebody can run 9.71 and still finish in second places over 0.1 behind the winner. Unbelievable!! Under 11 seconds is fast by normal human standards but 9.58 is insane. For a long time the record was 9.85 and 9.84 which I always thought super fast but he has knocked nearly 0.3 seconds off that! Scots by Country

Hi there Geschichte. I have been working hard on the Scots by Country page for a while now. I modeled it after the Judaism by country page which is a place that addresses the Jewish as both a religion and an ethnicity and basically makes a list of pages where the Jewish diaspora can be listed. I set out to create a similar page where articles regarding the Scottish diaspora could be listed. I know the Scots page isn't as full as the Jewish page, does this make the page seem unnecessary. I kind of intended the page to be a place where links to articles could be added as the articles are written, just like the Jewish page has been added to over the years. The tag you added to the Scots page mentions something about altering the page to make it more relevant, I was wondering if you had anything specific in mind. I would appreciate any help that you can offer, I'm only used to doing very simple things on Wikipedia. Andrewsthistle (talk) 19:05, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

You're absolutely right. I went ahead and deleted sections for all the countries for which there is no link to "Scots" or the Scottish People. Is there anything else that you believe should be done to improve the page before the "candidate for deletion" tag can be removed? Thanks for the help. Proposed deletion of Torvild Aakvaag

Hi G. I don't know if this Per Voksø is the same as the main author of Krigens Dagbok, but I do find that highly likely. Regarding Opplysningstjenesten, I have heard about it, and I do have a book on it. Will look into it as well as soon as I get back home, in little more than two weeks time. Btw: I'm now almost 100% sure than your Voksø is the author/editor of Krigens Dagbok, seeing as he was a central figure in the Norwegian Reader's Digest during the time the book was published, by Reader's Digest (Norw. Having done a bit of searching I have come up with the following with regards to your three question: 1. "Your" Per Voksø is without a doubt the same Per Voksø that edited Krigens Dagbok, as he was central in Det Beste at the time the book was published, by Det Beste. See Church of Norway and World Council of Churches for English sources on and non-free photos of Voksø. I think those would be very useful for the article. 2. Opplysningstjenesten I don't know anything about, I've gone through some of my books and found nothing. 3. Sorry to say, I've never heard of Reidar Selmer. Citation style

I think it looks more tidy. The last name is supposed to be the eyecatcher. At the university (not here) I also prefer to place citations in the running text:

The sun is hot, writes Hansen (2009:38)

Thoughts on Norwegian civilians killed in World War II and resistance members.

I've been thinking lately, should there be a resistance member sub-category to Category:Norwegian civilians killed in World War II? I don't really think of the resistance people as the same as other civilians. Your thoughts on the matter? Manxruler (talk) 14:39, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I have had problems with those categories (People who fell during the Norwegian Campaign as well as in the military abroad (pilots, on ships) are easier to place). What about resistance members that posed as civilians but had soldier ranks, carried weapons etc. But then again, what about people like Henry Gleditsch; they were certainly "resistance members" but not engaged in violence. Good common name for the Nasjonale regjering (1942-1945)?

Hi G. I just moved the State of Norway (1942-1945) article to "Nasjonale regjering (1942-1945)", as nasjonale regjering was the real official name of Quisling's government. However, according to WP:COMMONNAME we're to use the most common names for articles, and very few people will think of "nasjonale regjering" in this context. Maybe "Quisling government" or "Quisling regime" will be better? If the latter name is used then I guess we'll have to include more of the period of the "kommissariske statsråder" before 1 February 1942. What do you think? Elijah Wald

May I presume that your deletion of Elijah Wald was because the article was a sub-stub, not because of any question about his notability? He's a pretty important music historian. I've heard him speak several times at the EMP Pop Conference and always been impressed; I'm currently reading his How the Beatles Destroyed Rock n Roll, and finding it one of the best books on music I've read in years. Hey, I've noticed you around Norwegian sports articles, and I must say you are doing a good job. =) The reason I'm contacting you now is regarding the header article. You were the one moving this article the last time, and therefore I'm asking you for input now. Because I have, by a coincidence, found out that the full name of the club is "Idrettsforeningen Ready". (Source: Ready.no) Should this article be moved to IF Ready, do you think? Deletion of Bëlga article

Hi, I noticed that you deleted the article on Bëlga. Obviously, I can't see articles that have already been deleted and nor can I see the reasons behind the deletion, so I was wondering. The group Bëlga is certainly significant enough to merit an article, and it has one in Hungarian. One of the goals of Wikipedia as far as I can tell is the translation and transmission of information to be available to everyone across the world, regardless of language. The deletion of an article deemed — and here I'm assuming — not significant enough for English-speakers seems rather ethnocentric, as well as an unjustly applied principle, considering I have never ever seen anyone find a problem with the translation of obscure US-centric articles to other languages, rather consider it an improvement of Wikipedia. Two requests

Hi. I have to small challenges that perhaps you could help me with:

1. I just wrote an article about Halvor Bache Guldahl, former County Governor of Nord-Trøndelag. I just copied the Norwegian article (which is unreferenced), and I wondered if you have any sources. All references I could find was that he was chair of Fylkesbilene (aka TrønderBilene).
2. I was planning to take List of members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee to FLC shortly. However, I feel that a paragraph is needed about the secretary (i.e. located before the presentation of Geir Lundestad) that says something useful about the secretary and its functioning in general. I haven't found any decent sources, online or offline, but perhaps you have something.

Moving football club articles

Hi again, sorry for not answering you sooner... But here it is:
As you might have noticed, I'm not only editing football articles, but also cycling, ice hockey, handball+++ And as of late, I must say I'm starting to be a bit confused. Different projects follow different "guidelines", some of them actually being in conflict with Wikipedia policies and guidelines.

I suspect you're referring to the moves of Norwegian women's football teams; Amazon Grimstad, Arna-Bjørnar, Fortuna Ålesund, Team Strømmen and Trondheims-Ørn. I used WP:COMMONNAME as reason for moving these articles. I believe that clubs with "nicknames", don't need their different "sports club"-abbreviations, as they never or rarely use them.

I can see the point you're making on consistency, where you link to Category:English football clubs as an example. It looks neat, I must say, and I can understand why User:Alaney2k wants to change all European hockey clubs, to xxx HC (see discussions: Spellings and Disambiguation). I suppose you side with me on that discussion, since you're already reacting to my use of WP:COMMONNAME.

The problem with consistency in Category:Norwegian football clubs, is that there are none. English football clubs, almost with no exceptions use F.C. or A.F.C.. But Norwegian football clubs uses so many different abbreviations (BK, FC, FF, FK, IF, IK, IL, SK, SPK, TIF, UIL), both before the club name and after, some uses Fotball or Toppfotball, some a combination of the sport and an abbreviation, and some uses none of the previous (i.e. Hamarkameratene and ODD Grenland).

So using WP:COMMONNAME, where available, would give us a better consistency, than including an abbreviation which almost never is being used. (As in FK Mandalskameratene, I didn't know they had an abbreviation, until I started editing in Wikipedia.) By using WP:COMMONNAME, we avoid the hiding of abbreviation in articles, and also the many redirects provided by the current naming convention.

Here's a list on some of the clubs I would apply WP:COMMONNAME to:

• FK Athene Moss --> Athene Moss
• FK Bodø/Glimt --> Bodø/Glimt
• Drøbak/Frogn IL --> Drøbak/Frogn
• SK Gjøvik-Lyn --> Gjøvik-Lyn
• Kvik Halden FK --> Kvik Halden
• Larvik Turn & IF --> Larvik Turn
• FK Mandalskameratene --> Mandalskameratene
• Nybergsund IL-Trysil --> Nybergsund-Trysil
• SK Vard Haugesund --> Vard Haugesund

If you'd rather side with Alaney2k, and give them all FC-suffixes, I would be rather disappointed, but it is the only way to create full consistency on this issue. I believe that applying WP:COMMONNAME would be the second most effective way to achieve any consistency at all. It will only be used were there are little chance of misinterpretation (like not using Rosenborg, since this also can refer to the part of Trondheim were the club is originally from). Hi G. Not back just yet, but I thought I'd answer your question no. 4 while I had a small window of time available.

After doing some light research, I'm certain that source refers to HNoMS Sleipner (1877). I've often seen this ship, mistakenly, labelled as a cruiser by various non-naval writers. Furthermore, although the German Empire did have an Odin class of ships, this did not include a Sleipner, nor did any other German ship class. Finally, the Royal Norwegian Navy did accompany the Kaiser during his Norwegian vacations, at least on some occasions. For example, see this photo of Wilhelm II boarding Sleipner. Hærens Flyveskole I suppose could be translated to the Norwegian Army's Flying School, since it's pointing back to the Army, not to the Norwegian Army Air Service. Flyvåpnenes Felleskommando of course refers to the joint command of the two air services during the war, before their 1944 union into the ROyal Norwegian Air Force. A name for that? The Air Forces' Joint Command? I'll need to look into that more closely, they should have an official English name, having been based in the UK and all. And, yeah, you're right. The reason I didn't update the links directly after the move, was because I wanted to sort out the athletics bit to Kongsvinger IL first. This was done by User:Ters the day after, the only problem was that he moved it to Kongsvinger Idrettslag, which meant I couldn't move it to its correct namespace without an administrator's action. But as you can see in the Centre Party-article I have found that the most reliable sources actually use "Farmers' Party" (explained in a note in the article). "Cathedral School"

Hi,
I have been unable to find any reliable sources that use the names "Trondheim Cathedral School", "Bergen Cathedral School", and so on. If none can be found, the renames should be reverted per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English): It can happen that an otherwise notable topic has not yet received much attention in the English-speaking world, so that there are too few English sources to constitute an established usage. Very low google counts can but need not be indicative of this. If this happens, follow the conventions of the language in which the entity is most often talked about (German for German politicians, Turkish for Turkish rivers, Portuguese for Brazilian towns etc.). --Aqwis (talk) 16:10, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

True, on the first page of Google hits I can find the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Abel Prize and King Harald's personal website (!). The rest of the schools follow automatically because of consistency issues (consistency is the first rule of the Wikipedia:Manual of Style, "internal" in this context is interpreted as consistency within the group of cathedral schools). Despite WP:BB, I think the normal way of going about a rename like this is to put a note on the talk page of the page you intend to move, saying you plan to move it, and why. Then you wait a little, and if nobody objects, you do it. Bærum

I presume you know more about the local geography of Bærum than me, so I have two quick questions,

1. Are the places Nadderud (not the stadium but the area), Presterud and Fleskum worthy of an article, or should they be delinked?
2. Are there any other particular institutions along the Kolsås Line or Lilleaker Line. For the latter there is the Radium Hospital, Oslo International School and Nadderud stadion, but are there any other, or is this part of Bærum just housing. Elementary schools and the like aren't important, but I would think upper secondary schools would be, or other schools and institutions with a lot commuting.

• 2) There are some institutions, not counting elementary schools. By the way you must have meant "the former", though, not "the latter". Let me take Bærum first. For Jar there's the sports and recreation field Jarmyra. Tjernsrud doesn't exist anymore, but used to serve Norsk Film. Ringstabekk serves Stabekkbanen, the prominent bandy field. Egne hjem doesn't exist anymore either, but used to serve Norges Toppidrettsgymnas and the defunct state college at Ringstabekk. Bekkestua has many notable locations, including the international school and Nadderud stadion. Gjønnes has Nadderud Upper Secondary, as well as sports facilities. Haslum has Haslum Church, which I guess is notable. It also serves the recreation areas around Øverlandselva. Avløs has the train depot, Valler and Gjettum I'm not too sure about, except that the very popular hill Kolsåstoppen is nearby. Hauger Station has two upper secondary schools, Rosenvilde and Rud, a third upper s. school Dønski is not far away either. Also, the home field of Hauger FK is here, as well as Bærum Ishall. The Confederation of Sports used to have their headquarters here too. Kolsås Station I don't know. I'm sure there are more. Now for the Lilleaker Line: Øraker has the sports facilities of Ullern IF, Lilleaker has CC Vest as well as the recreation area around Lysakerelva, and Lysaker itself. The stations between Sollerud and Hoff are pretty anonymous I guess, except that Ullern Church is somewhere along the way and is pretty well-known. Ullern Station is quite close to the former Bestun Station by the way, but I wouldn't say that it does serve lower Bestum and the small marina, Løvenskiold-Vækerø and the like. To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.

It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:

• Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
• Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
• Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
• Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
• Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
• Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
• Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
• Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
• Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
• In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
