Seeking Resolution For Disruptive User edit
I'm not sure how this works precisely, but I am seeking to report a user under the name MrOllie who is obstructing my edits. On the Buck Breaker article, he continues to insist that the citations provided to an excerpt are supported, though after having checked the citations, they provide zero relevance to what is written on the wikipedia page. The wikipedia page excerpt in question is referring to a conspiracy about attempts to instill homosexuality within the black community and to feminize black men. The citation in question (Afrocentric Worldview, Hetero-Normative Ethos and Black LGBTQ Intellectuals Matriculating through Afrocentric Psychology Programs at Historically Black Colleges/Universities (HBCUs)), specifically discusses the LGTQ community in regards to the black community and within afrocentric studies and does not mention A) An attempt to instill homosexuality within the black community or B) An attempt to feminize black men. I hope you can warn him or settle the matter, as the wikipedia page itself is significantly lacking in reliable attribution and requires editing in order to reflect its lack-thereof.VirtualRebound22 (talk) 02:10, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- VirtualRebound22 has been repeatedly deleting content with obviously false edit summaries - first claiming that there are no citations, and then instead claiming they don't support the content when pressed. Both claims are obviously false - the citation obviously supports the claim if you check it. MrOllie (talk) 02:14, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023 edit
News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).
|
|
- Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
- As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.
- Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.
- The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.
- Following a community referendum, the arbitration policy has been modified to remove the ability for users to appeal remedies to Jimbo Wales.
DYK help edit
Hey BorgQueen, hope everything is going well. I now have four DYK noms piled up (some of them months old, and two recent ones). I wanted some help understanding what more is required on my part for them to be promoted. Really appreciate your help with this. I have some more ideas that I want to submit but I would like to make sure my nominations aren't being boycotted first.--NØ 18:35, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
I saw that you moved a promoted Nomination to an image slot. My first concern is that the image was not put forward as part of the nomination; and my second concern is that it may not be qualified as a free image. It is licensed {{PD-Peru-photo}} Bruxton (talk) 13:08, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Bruxton moved to Prep 7 sans image. As for your first point, I was fairly certain the nominator, @Thebiguglyalien, wouldn't mind. But yes, we don't really know if the image is PD worldwide. Too bad! It would have gotten a lot of attention with that ghostly, eerie image. BorgQueen (talk) 13:24, 11 June 2023 (UTC)

Religion edit
I was not sure the Pope Sisinnius hook should be in the quirky slot. It involves religion and it is rather tragic. On the face of it it looks quirky but I hesitated because there are 1.3 billion Catholics in the world. I am not sure I am right so I just came here to explain why I did not place it in the quirky slot. Hope all is well! Bruxton (talk) 13:51, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

It looks like Template:Did you know nominations/Order of Excellence for Women was a slog just to get to this point, but I was reviewing it and while Order of the Righteous Son of Sudan is good at 1843 characters of prose, Order of Excellence for Women only has 993 characters of prose. It looks like the initial comment by User:Muboshgu noted this and suggested that it needed to be expanded, but it looks like that detail got lost in the shuffle of ribbon color and verifiability concerns. I'll ping User:FuzzyMagma here but I didn't want to bring it to WT:DYK because I feel like I should ping everyone and that's too many people to ping without a suggested course of action, so I wanted to check with you before bringing it there and pinging 9(+) people. How should this be addressed, or User:FuzzyMagma do you think you can expand it out with at least 407 more characters of prose appropriately so that it's not an issue? - Aoidh (talk) 03:17, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- The DYK code ignores text inside the box. Take that into consideration and it passes FuzzyMagma (talk) 05:40, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- It ignores it because that's not prose, so it's not taken into consideration. Text in tables like that are very specifically excluded from being counted as prose length in WP:DYKCRIT. The article as written is not long enough to meet DYK's requirements. - Aoidh (talk) 05:45, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- @FuzzyMagma @Aoidh is correct I'm afraid. BorgQueen (talk) 06:22, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Aoidh How it is not prose? how did you define prose? when did text inside a table did not become prose?
- Anyway, let me take it from the table so the code can read it as prose.
- Here, fixed the prose problem. Please confirm when you have time FuzzyMagma (talk) 11:32, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- @FuzzyMagma: Text within tables are not considered prose for the purposes of DYK, as explained at WP:DYKCRIT (
Articles must have a minimum of 1,500 characters of prose (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables etc.)
(emphasis added) which has been the standard for over a decade. That said, moving the description into non-tabled prose satisfies WP:DYKCRIT, so there's no further issue from me. - Aoidh (talk) 17:43, 21 June 2023 (UTC)- I will put this forward for discussion. Do you know what will be the best avenue for that? FuzzyMagma (talk) 06:30, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
- WT:DYK is thataway, but I would recommend against picking a losing battle. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 09:52, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Theleekycauldron if it was dicussed before then can you please share that. Maybe there were valid point that were made, or you can tell me your opinion too or why you think it is a lost cause FuzzyMagma (talk) 11:35, 23 June 2023 (UTC)
- I went back and found when it was added to that particular page, which was December 29, 2007. However, it apparently existed elsewhere before that; this discussion predates that addition yet references that wording and this comment suggests that it was added to some other DYK rules page in April 2007, just over sixteen years ago. I went through each archive one at a time and looked for opposition to that addition and could not find any from its initial comment in Archive 19 all the way to Archive 36, when [[[Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Archive 36#Proposal|this discussion]] proposed some IAR "wriggle room" with the tables and other exclusions and did not gain traction, but even that did not suggest that content in tables should count outright. From there, there have been brief discussions where editors who included a table in an article would push back on the idea of their own tables not counting and it would be explained why that rule was there, but on the whole I haven't seen comments by other editors supporting content within tables counting for prose purposes at DYK. - Aoidh (talk) 03:48, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

- A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that
[s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Administrators' newsletter – December 2023 edit
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2023).
- Following a talk page discussion, the Administrators' accountability policy has been updated to note that while it is considered best practice for administrators to have notifications (pings) enabled, this is not mandatory. Administrators who do not use notifications are now strongly encouraged to indicate this on their user page.
- Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
- The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
- Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.
