I have purposely omitted the footballing nationality of players from these articles since it can be controversial (especially for people born in Yugoslavia). Gro Steinsland

I suppose you're right, but I wish it were that easy to find a nice cite about the impact of her books! She appears to own the field in Norway, but documenting that without its seeming mere peacockery . . . gah. Plus the source that led me to the 2 OpEds emphasized her willingness to write them as a sign of her outgoing and populist character. And I thought the Heyerdahl one would make a bang-up DYK hook - it has a stellar cast and a down-to-earth judgement. Pooh. I was wondering whether that would be disrespectful and anyway was 200 words short on the article minimum for a DYK, so I guess I will just keep looking and hope there is (a) enough info and (b) something else adequately piquant. I try not to have DYK hooks of the style, "Did you know that Gro Steinsland is a professor specialising in Norse mythology?" But it's great that we now have an article on her, so I want to make it a decent one. Anyway, I'm writing you partly because I have found an additional source that will require my rewriting the lede again, and you recast it so I don't want it to seem as if I'm just objecting to your change, but it seems the info in the other sources is out of date as regards her university tasks. OK, have a look at it now. I've put in what I could find about her books, all from that same overview source, while attempting not to be too puffy. I've recast the article again because the interdisciplinary programme is defunct and it's unclear whether she's technically on leave from the University of Oslo or no longer a professor there - I had wondered when I saw that line on the departmental page, and I think the Norwegian articles are badly out of date on that score (I was going to attempt to update them, but please be my guest and do that if you haven't already - my Norwegian is laughable :-D ). And then I went back and readded one of the 2 Op Eds and started a section on the talk page with my rationale. So if you disagree, let's talk about it there to leave a public trail. The article is now long enough for DYK even without that last paragraph, and I can use her taking heathenry seriously as a religion as an alternative hook if the Op Ed activity winds up being left out. Re: Heimdal

I wouldn't call Heimdal a båt. She was a command ship and a royal yacht at first, then a fishery protection vessel. I guess in the last role some Norwegians might refer to her as a militær patruljebåt, but this is incorrect use of the terminology. The correct term to describe her for most of her service (except when she was a royal yacht, command ship and during the war time years as a headquarters and depot ship) would be an offshore patrol vessel (oppsynsskip). She was built as a command vessel (kommandofartøy) and it would be completely wrong to call her a militær patruljebåt. A patruljebåt is a much smaller vessel, built for local guard duties, Heimdal was anything but such a vessel. In conclusion: Skip, not båt. Manxruler (talk) 14:19, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

"Battle of Akureyri"

Hi G. You're an admin, so I guess you should know. I've just come across the "Battle of Akureyri". This clearly is a fake. None of the real sources cited actually support any of the claims made in the article, only a blog does. I've gone through various sources just to check, this battle does not exist. Norwegian insurance employees union

Hi. Do you know anything about the following union (for example, what was its name): There was a union of insurance employees, not affiliated with LO. They were mainly employees of Livforsikringsselskapet Fram. I have always used journal for strictly academic-scholarly publications, periodical for the serious like Prosa, Samtiden and Syn og Segn, and magazine for "glansede blader". Thanks, and in the meantime I've find out that there already is an article about Prosa on the English Wikipedia (quite strange that it is without disambig though) :O). Do you think it could be an idea to a create a category for the chief executives of NSB? With Category:Norges Statsbaner people and Category:Directors of government agencies of Norway in it? Also, it could do with a bit of title standardisation in the bios of directors: Waldemar Hoff is currently a "director-general", Arne Wam a "CEO", Einar Enger a "president", Osmund Ueland a "chief executive" and Edvard Heiberg formerly a "managing director"! I don't think I would make a category, as long as we have the succession boxes. Standardisation is a good idea. The title was specifically changed from director-general (generaldirektør) to chief executive officer by Kjeld Rimberg. "President" is a title I have never used, except for instances where the term is used in Norwegian: Red Cross, sports organizations etc. Geschichte (talk) 15:07, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

• Thanks for the thanks. I feel that one field in particular is underdeveloped: the battles. The navbox now lists the following battles: Drøbak Sound – Midtskogen – Dombås – Namsos – Åndalsnes – Hegra – Vinjesvingen – Narvik – Gratangen. In my making of war bios, I have encountered quite many mentions of battles or skirmishes that we don't mention. Battles near Voss was the last example, if I recall correctly. The Battle of Fossum Bridge is a large one without much mention anywhere in WP. Also I know battles from my local region. There were skirmishes en route to Sollihøgda on 12 April, with casualties. And wasn't there an aerial battle over Fornebu? (The Lysaker Bridge sabotage is also interesting in the context of the N.Campaign.)
• So what do you think should be threshold for making articles on battles? The regular notability threshold (= coverage) should apply, but apart from that I think we should have articles on every regular skirmish with casualties. Geschichte (talk) 14:26, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
  • Yeah, I know Fossum very well. That's absolutely a notable battle. In fact, there are tons of battle articles to be written, and I plan on writing many in the coming time. For example, I did create and write almost all of Battle of Dombås some time ago. Also, I plan on refurbishing Midtskogen, Namsos, Åndalsnes (the name of that one is also quite bad, needs to be moved to a better one), Vinjesvingen and Gratangen. I've got a large personal library focussing on the 1940 campaign, the issue is time and the importance of focussing on quality. In my view, its far better to have a nice B-class (or GA, even) article, than to have, say, a start-class article. This needs to be carried out very carefully and deliberately. First, I think we need to fix Norwegian Campaign, and then get on with the various battles. Manxruler (talk) 17:00, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
    • Oh, and yes there was an aerial battle over Fornebu. That's also one the articles I'm planning, just need to figure out exactly how to best go about it. Sollihøgda is also important.
    • With regards to threshold for battles/skirmishes, I'd go for pretty all of them. The sources are there, so that's absolutely no problem. If I didn't have to work both today and tomorrow (setting up an exhibition at the museum which I lead in connection with the national Kulturuke) I would get right on it. • Uploading: First you download the image to your hard drive. At "Upload file", select "It is the logo of an organization". Upload the file, and in the form you must fill in, only fill in "|Article=" and "|Source=". Then, from a drop-down menu near the bottom select "Licensing: Logo". That's all. Hello, it seems to me that the archaeologist is much better known than the book printer. I made a search at NB Digital and checked the "Digitalt tilgjengelig" box, and saw that the printer wasn't included in the early 90s ed. of SNL, which seems to include many members of the Brøgger family. Additionally, the NBL entry for the archealogist seems to be almost twice as long as the one for the printer. • Norwegian Championships is good enough in my opinion. The phrase "hoved-NM" mostly designates a common time and place for 19 of the events in which a national champion is crowned. If you look at at this page, you'll see that the championships in half marathon, marathon, standing jumps, relays, combined events, cross-country running, fell running and ultra running (I don't know why race walking is omitted) have an equal status (nominally), but are held at a different time and place. In other words, "hoved-NM" could be called just "NM", but there has to be a lot of different NMs becuse of all the time-consuming events. (The current trend is to add more events, not to cut down on it, cf. ultra running.) Did this make sense? Geschichte (talk) 09:32, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Stampesletta and the Intertoto Cup

Hi, I've now added the information on Stampesletta to Lillehammer IF; sorry for taking so much time, it simply slipped my mind. On a completely different issue: I just created List of Rosenborg BK seasons, and have a challenge regarding the 2008 UEFA Intertoto Cup. RBK "won" the tournament (as one of eleven teams), but then they didn't really win it after all, since the team who went the furtherest in the UEFA Cup actually won it. Rytterager DYK

Hi, you wanted me to clarify what positions Jørgen Rytterager had in public service over at t:tdyk#Snarum Station, Jørgen Rytterager. Actually, there is only one line about his career in municipal service in the journal article I've cited, which reads: "I en årrekke var han valgmann og forlikskommissær og ble mye brukt i kommunal tjeneste". Any idea of how the meaning of that sentence (especially the words "valgmann" and "forlikskommisær") can be translated into good plain English? Competition tables

Regarding the hiding of this table on Marian Burnett's article. I entirely understand your reasons for removing these tables, but I disagree that they simply duplicate material, but rather they provide a quick tabulated breakdown of major international performances. Some people find these tables useful as they allow you to scan the table to pick out info (Olympic appearances/medal performances etc) more quickly than you can in simple prose form.
Given the recent growth in the "event result" type of articles, they also allow links to these more specific topics. I think competition links in the prose are more intuitive when they link to the wider championship article, rather than the specific result breakdowns (especially as those articles almost exclusively contain no descriptions beyond a single sentence). If we remove the tables, we would be in effect orphaning a whole section of athletics articles from their related subjects (the athletes). SFB 20:14, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Politicians don't have career breakdowns. Nobody does. The only acceptable way to summarize content is in an infobox, navigation box and/or medal box. When it comes to the actual state of the articles, athletes are a special case -- we used the tables out of laziness only. We had to make the article creation process bearable, seeing as I/we've been making thousands upon thousands of those bios. If people want simple scans of careers, other than the medal boxes and maybe infoboxes, they should read the IAAF profiles or similar. You are the best prose writer in the field of athletics at the moment, so I say we got a good thing going there and should stick to that.
I don't know if it's true that event articles are orphaned. At e.g. my latest fleshing-out both the overall championship article and the specific event articles are linked to when possible. Geschichte (talk) 21:07, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Had Vigrid been as well known abroad as in Norway, then that would have been a shoe-in for 1 April. Still, I don't think the organization is all that known in the world outside Norway. We'll see what comes up through the upcoming research.

The Sunde-Lie link is intriguing. I've recently read a biography on Max Mauser, a truly fascinating character. Might go for a massive expansion on his article sometime not too far into the future, perhaps even try for a GA.

• "(1817–94)" and the authormask are attempts to save space, which we don't need to do. Other, "concise" encyclopedias do it more, but I just don't see the point of not writing 1894 or Rune Ottosen. "Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav" was for some reason the old name of the article, and I thought I was doing a favor by updating it a little. I take the point about "a degree" vs. "the degree". You are also asking about necessity, I do not know where you are going with that and won't answer it. I know I have asked the same question before, though ("page needed", "lead too short", inline page numbers etc) so there are admittedly some stones and glass houses here. Not everyone got swords, according to the statutes of the War Cross, swords were awarded if the War Cross was awarded to "personal efforts in action", while people who had been awarded the War Cross for "other special services to the defence of Norway" did not get a sword. Hi there. I found an article that you created 2 1/2 year ago, Else Werring. It's about a "overhoffmesterinne", which is far from notable from what I can see. There are two references on her family, and one ref about the entire Court of the Norwegian Royal Family, while the last reference is about her getting Commander with Star of the Order of St. Olav. I thought I should PROD the article, but I want to hear what you say first. This person has no entry on snl.no or no.wikipedia.org - so my question is if the St. Olav's Orden decorating is enough to claim her notable enough for an article on english wikipedia. No, I believe the norwegian version is crap, but my concern is that in norwegian wikipedia "everyone" is notable for an article, and when this person does not have an article on no.wikipedia.org and not on snl.no either - I start to think "is this notable?". Hmm, this is a non-discussion if I ever saw one, what about the who's who article or the multiple non-trivial mentions or coverages in newspaper articles? (Se og Hør is not cited in the article.) This goes for both Werring, her successor etc. Like it or not, Norway is a monarchy which means that noatbility can be achieved in the royal field, as well as within politics, law, civil service, academics, business, religion, media, NGOs, sports and so on. -- see also the decorations, two Grand Crosses which confirms that there are institutions in the world which regard royal servants as top notch. Articles relating to women's issues

An IP address has ceaselessly attacked the articles on the Norwegian women's universities and other articles relating to women's issues on the Norwegian Wikipedia, and has been blocked there repeatedly. Now he seems bent on continuing the same disruptive behaviour here. The last IP address he used to edit the article "Kvinneuniversitet (sic) Norden" was banned because he was a banned user called Sju hav, the administrator said. Not so sure about that one. If you search for "Ibba vålerenga" on Google, you get 37 000 hits. If you search for "Laajab vålerenga", you get 14900 hits. Do you know if there is an official translation of rådmann? Personally I've been using chief-of-administration, while Ordnett says "chief administrative officer". While both of these certainly are valid, I was just wondering if you had come across anything which indicated that one of them is regarded as official. • No, not official really, I have used a dictionary for most professional titles. There are many more, such as redaksjonssekretær, sorenskriver, byskriver, byfoged, dommerfullmektig, advokatfullmektig, overrettssakfører, byråsjef, ekspedisjonssjef and departementsråd. In the case of rådmann I've used "chief administrative officer". Sometimes you will encounter "teknisk rådmann", "finansrådmann" etc. in which case I've used "chief administrative officer of xxx". Another case is "fylkesrådmann", which I've also translated as "chief administrative officer" (of xxxx County Municipality). -- not to be confused with "fylkesråd", the member of a county cabinet. Viking Stavanger

Hi there. When I created the article Viking HK a couple of months ago, I changed Viking Stavanger from a redirect to Viking FK to a dab-page, as both teams are sometimes referred to as "Viking Stavanger". Now that you've created the article IL Viking, I realize that there is a connection between those two that I wasn't aware of, so my question is: Should Viking Stavanger be a redirect to IL Viking, or should I expand the dab-page to include the multi-sports club and the ice hockey club?
