Feedback

This isn't my area of interest at all, but since you asked for feedback, I'll say what you have set out here sounds pretty good! -- Tarquin 16:40, 27 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 19:06, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Do you want to make this global?

I have looked at the facilities that are listed on this and the question I have is do you want to make this global? I ask this because I have seen other users created ski jumping hill facility information, most notably at the Holmenkollen ski jump in Oslo, Norway. I am in the middle of working on bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton articles, including the tracks that hold these events such as Cesana Pariol in Italy that was used for the 2006 Winter Olympics. Others to consider would be the Sapporo Dome in Japan which was a venue for both the FIFA World Cup in 2002 and for the 2007 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships earlier this year. Something to think about. Chris 01:45, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

I have suggested this before. I have also proposed creating a Wikiproject to cover all event venues in general as sports facilities may be too narrow for a scope. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Architecture#Proposed daughter wikiproject. Tbo 157talk 10:46, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Returning project to active status

I am giving a go and getting this project back up and running. This is going to include reworking the main project page and beginning the recruiting process. Feedback is appreciated. --Gwguffey (talk) 15:31, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

(Update) All previously listed project members who have not left Wikipedia have been notified of this initiative and invited to stop by. --Gwguffey (talk) 05:16, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

User box

A userbox has been created for user at {{User WikiProject Sports facilities}}. A different image needs to be found for the box, though. Something historical could be interesting, if a photo could be found with appropriate licensing. Anyway, it's a start. --Gwguffey (talk) 18:14, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

(Update) Changed the colors and image to make it less dark. --Gwguffey (talk) 20:36, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Article assessment

The process of getting the tools required for article assessment as begun. Please visit WP:WikiProject Sports facilities/Assessment to see the to-do list. --Gwguffey (talk) 03:53, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Scope of this project

In an earlier discusssion, Tbo 157 proposed merging/expanding this project into a broader "event venues" project given the quantity of multi-purpose venues and sporting locations. Would this project be more viable if the scope were expanded to include venues for concerts and meetings? --Gwguffey (talk) 18:18, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Just a note that would mean merging Wikipedia:WikiProject Music venues, a not very active project, into this project. Thanks. Tbo 157(talk) 18:38, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

I have done some work on beginning to recraft the scope section of the project, though I kept it sports-specific for the time being. There needs to be some definition to the types of facilities that the project should cover. Below is a listing of potential types to consider:

As a sports-specific project

The combined distinct members of Category:Sports venues includes 10894 articles that cover the following types of venues:

  • American football venues
  • Arena football venues
  • Athletics (track and field) venues
  • Australian rules football grounds
  • Badminton venues
  • Baseball venues
  • Basketball venues
  • Bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton tracks
  • Boxing venues
  • Bullrings
  • Canadian football venues
  • Canoeing venues
  • Cricket grounds
  • Field hockey venues
  • Football (soccer) venues
  • Football venues
  • Gaelic games grounds
  • Golf clubs and courses
  • Gymnasiums
  • Horse racing venues
  • Ice hockey venues
  • Lacrosse venues
  • Motorsport venues
  • Racquets venues
  • Real tennis venues
  • Rodeo venues
  • Rowing venues
  • Rugby league stadiums
  • Rugby union stadiums
  • Skateboarding spots
  • Skateparks
  • Ski jumping venues
  • Speedskating venues
  • Speedway venues
  • Squash venues
  • Surfing locations
  • Swimming venues
  • Tennis venues
  • Velodromes
  • Volleyball venues

Expanded to a larger events project

This would be the members of Category:Entertainment venues subcategories (minus Category:Sports venues listed above) plus Category:Convention centers:

Total distinct articles when combined together with sports venues is 18457 articles which is within a percentage point of two of a 70% increase from sports-specific (math is approximate due to difficulty in attempting to weed out all recursive categories).

--Gwguffey (talk) 05:06, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sure I like linking in convention centers because the capacity of the venue relates more to floor space, not spectator capacity. I know a few sporting events have been held at convention centers, but they are a little more rare. However, there are so few convention centers that it may not make much difference. Patken4 (talk) 22:58, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
I included convention centers due to the use of the word "events" in Tbo 157's original proposal. See my follow up in the "project expansion thread below". --Gwguffey (talk) 04:57, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Use of succession boxes on venue articles

I have made a proposal regarding the creation of a succession box for use specifically on venue articles over at WT:SBS#Proposal: New succession template for sports venues. I think it would be great if we could work with WP:WikiProject Succession Box Standardization to develop some guidelines for how succession boxes should be used on venue pages. Currently, it is a rather messy aspect of these articles. --Gwguffey (talk) 04:58, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Structure section of main project page

I started reworking WP:WikiProject Sports facilities#Structure to reflect current practices and to make it more generalized. Take a look. --Gwguffey (talk) 01:07, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

New Template

Hey there, WP:Sports Facilities. I've put together a template for stadiums that have moved out of the "purposed" phase and have had physical construction started.

{{Stadium_under_construction}}

Use it as necessary! Thanks! -- MeHolla! 22:43, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Great. It has been add to the project template page. --Gwguffey (talk) 03:08, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Should this be a sub category of Planned or Proposed stadiums? Patken4 (talk) 14:16, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Template categorization Q

I was wandering thru templates and found {{Nashville athletic venues}} in Category:Sports navbox templates and didn't know if this WikiProject had a better spot to organize those templates into, possibly Category:WikiProject Sports facilities templates like Category:WikiProject Orders, Decorations, and Medals templates has, or another template category. Thx. — MrDolomite • Talk 16:00, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Project expansion

What should the expanded project be called. Any ideas? I can only think of WikiProject:Event Venues or WikiProject Event Facilities. Tbo 157(talk) 16:00, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

To me, the word "events" implies the broadest of scopes as that would seem to imply facilities that are used for gatherings other than recreation like business conferences, conventions (which could also be recreational events like sportsmen shows, car shows, sci-fi conventions, etc.), expos and tradeshows. That is why I included convention centers in the earlier thread. However, all of the other categories listed in the earlier thread are all subcats of Category:Entertainment venues, so if there is no interest in facilities like convention centers, then what we would actually be looking at are "Entertainment venues" as the category is named. To me, "Entertainment venues" = sports + music + dance + comedy + theater facilities. Whereas, "Event venues" is one step up the hierarchy = entertainment venues + business event venues.
Oh, yeah, what about facilities like fairgrounds? Those also are entertainment facilities. --Gwguffey (talk) 05:12, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Fairgrounds could be included but I don't think they come under Entertainment venues as they are constantly changing their venue. With regards to business venues, they could come bunder the scope of our project as I can't see them becoming a Wikiproject on its own. Event venues themselves are quite a narrow and unpopular scope. Thats why alot of venues simply come under a larger project such as WP:WikiProject Sports. The categories concerned with our scope don;t have very many articles compared to the more popular wikiprojects. Thanks. Tbo 157(talk) 12:24, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Just a clarification: In the U.S., "fairgrounds" are locations instead of events themselves. Each state and a lot of counties have their own permanent fairgrounds that are the host venues for their respective annual state or county fairs in addition to other community events or expos (like summer car shows), see Florida State Fairgrounds as an example. --Gwguffey (talk) 16:06, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. I'll change the project to event venues as soon as weve found all the categories and defined the scope. Tbo 157(talk)
I created Category:Fairgrounds to cover this sort of venue and made a quick attempt to populate it. So, it exists now and can be included in the discussion of appropriateness for the project.
Ive had a look at all the categories you've listed and I can't find anymore relating to event venues. As no wikiproject music users have responded to my proposal at here, should we go ahead with the merger and project expansion? I feel that we should consult the participants of the music venues wikiproject first, however. Thanks. Tbo 157(talk) 17:52, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
If no one objects, I will move the project to event venues as it is not a very well covered scope anyway as can be seen by the inactive projects whose scope are in these fields. We might as well cover both entertainment and non entertainment venues. Thanks. Tbo 157(talk) 12:01, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Arsenal Stadium

Hello all. I'm reassessing the Arsenal Stadium article as part of the GA Sweeps process. I've added a few citation needed tags to the article and placed it on hold for seven days for improvements. At the end of the week, I'll make a decision about whether or not to delist the article. Nikki311 18:43, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Notability of sports venues

I have started a very rough draft of some Notability guidelines for sports venues of all types. I will be asking some of the various related sports projects for their input, but first I would like to share my ideas with our group. The guidelines can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Event Venues/Sports task force/Notability. If you have anything to add or there is something I should eliminate from my proposal, please add your comments to the talk page at the guidelines. Thanks in advance! Patken4 (talk) 14:44, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Commons cat

There is an existing Sport venues cat on the Commons. Probably should just use that, not 'Sports facilities'. Alaney2k (talk) 21:26, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:58, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Sports/Facilities and venues task force/Archive 1/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you. Okip 02:47, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Listing of GAs and FAs

When will you put a listing of which sports venues have made WP:GA and WP:FA? Chris (talk) 13:39, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

A good question, but the answer lies with the Wikipedia toolserver. See [1] for an example. --DThomsen8 (talk) 23:17, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Cairns Field Saskatoon

Cairns Field in Saskatoon is not home to the Saskatoon Tigers anymore. The Saskatoon Tigers play in the Saskatoon Men's Baseball League, which plays on various diamonds throughout the city. Also where it says Cairns Field has excellent drainage, in fact it does not. Cairns Field has been under water many times this year. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.17.38.206 (talk) 21:58, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Olympic venue articles

I just wanted to let you know that all of the venues used at the Olympic Games are completed. This includes items such as Venues of the 1968 Winter Olympics as an example. I am in the process of alphabetizing them by Summer Olympic, Winter Olympic, overall, and the categorizing them into specific sports like luge, field hockey, and biathlon. Chris (talk) 03:14, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Sweet work. Those are often the ones that slip through the cracks as a result of irregular usage. Kithira (talk) 10:55, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
