Geneva, Ohio

I took the time to revise and rewrite this article (being that I live there and all) because it was a sloppy mess beforehand. I plan on adding other things, including media (newspapers, radio stations, etc.). Let me know what you think. Hopefully it can be rated as at least a Good Article some time soon. Requested photo categories

I noticed that there are subcategories of Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Ohio divided by town, and many more that don't exist (i.e. there are pages in the category but the category doesn't appear as a subcategory because it is a redlink). On the surface, this idea sounds good. Do any other State projects have newsletters, and its all within the realms of Wiki's talk page policies? Mass emails like this are allowed then? Newsletters are mass mailed by many Projects (Biography, Military history, Food and Drink, Germany, Cleveland Cavaliers, Novels,), just to name a few I'm aware of, as long as there is way to stop recieving the letter it's fine... and I already have an idea for an unsubscribe list so that shouldn't be an issue. Myself and a group of other editors are working to bring List of counties in Ohio to Featured List standard. Hopefully, you'd agree that the article is pretty close. The main thing holding it back is the lack of references in the lead section. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Hi, unfortunately we don't have adequate images of Ohio's only National Park. Commons:Category:Cuyahoga Valley National Park is all there is. Oh, I didn't introduce myself. I'm the main author on US National Parks, Monuments, Historic Sites and so on in the de-Wikipedia. I've been to many of them myself, have traveled many states of the US (and provinces in Canada), but haven't been to Ohio and this Park, and probably won't come there anytime soon. I have to write about it none the less, because we don't have anyone in the German Wikipedia, who has been there. And frankly, from the NPS-Website I did not get an adequate idea about the park. The aerial images at Google finally helped me to understand about it. So basically I would like to have pictures of everything in the park:

• Nature and the natural landscape: The River, the tributaries (with the Brandywine Falls and other waterfalls), the forest, open areas, ...
• The cultural landscape: The historic locks, the towpath, the historic farms, farm land, man-made ponds, other historic buildings, ...
• A National Park in a densely populated area: The Ohio Turnpike (and/or other overpasses), sub-urban developments (as seen from the park or the park as seen from them), the golf course, other recreational installations of any kind, industrial buildings close to the park, ...
• whatever I missed here that is specific for Cuyahoga Valley NP.

You know, first of all Cuyahoga Valley NP deserves a decent article (and decent images) just because it is a National Park. But I think there is more: Having protected nature in a densely populated area is an interesting challenge for environmentalists. And one that will become more important. There are no more Yosemites, Yellowstones or Grand Canyons around anymore, not in the US, nor in Germany. But valuable patches of nature, interconnected with remnants of historic use by man, and a huge need for recreational use today are pretty typical for the developed world. And this makes Cuyahoga Valley NP interesting and deserving to be reported at Wikipedia - in English language but in other languages as well. Can anyone of you help me and Wikipedia in general, by providing a few images of the topics above, and/or of anything else that I didn't know or think about? --h-stt !? 17:19, 27 April 2008 (UTC) PS: This is not urgent. Picture request for Ohioans living near/in Toledo

I'm currently working on an article on the Roman emperor Domitian. Unfortunately, there is a serious lack of good, clear pictures of his portraits (busts, statues). Part of the reason is because there are simply few surviving portraits of Domitian to begin with (he was condemned to be obliterated from public memory following his death). The Toledo Museum of Art however contains a truly spectacular bust of this emperor, which is not only a fine portrait of Domitian in its own right, but probably one of the finest surviving busts from the Roman Empire period. An example can be seen here. Because I think the current article would be greatly enhanced with an image of this bust, I've tried an extensive internet search for good, free pictures but came up with nothing. So I would like to ask any Wikipedians living nearby to either, "donate" pictures they already have to Wikipedia, or consider taking a short trip to the museum and photograph this statue from as many angles as they can. InterProject Collaboration

Hey there! As you may or may not know. An Afd has been brought up to discuss the notability of Ohio High School Athletic Conferences. It was proposed that WikiProject Ohio lead an effort to get these articles up to par. We are asking for help from Wikipedia:WikiProject Sports and Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools as well to help us get these articles uniform. On June 11, Governor Ted Strickland endorsed Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray to be the Democratic candidate for Ohio Attorney General in November 2008. Elected to the Treasurer’s office in 2006, Richard Cordray manages all state banking functions, oversees an investment portfolio averaging $18 billion, and is the custodian of more than $200 billion in pension and other assets. Cordray’s primary goals are safeguarding state funds to restore the public trust, promoting financial security for Ohioans, and cultivating economic growth.

Upon taking office, Cordray made small business growth one of his top priorities. A former small business owner, Cordray understands the rigors and difficulties of running one’s own enterprise. He immediately revitalized the Treasury’s small business program, called GrowNOW, which fills an important funding niche for the small businesses that create and keep jobs in our hometowns. As of June 2008, GrowNOW is supporting over 700 small businesses in our communities (in contrast to fewer than 100 when Cordray took office) and has affected more than 7,000 Ohio jobs. Because of his efforts to aid small businesses, the U.S. Small Business Administration named him the 2008 Financial Services Champion of the Year for the Midwest Region.

Cordray is also building on his commitment to the financial security of Ohio’s families. As a county treasurer, he advocated strongly for a bill to require financial education for all high school students beginning in 2010. As Ohio Treasurer, he worked with education leaders to create the Teachers Academy, a program that trains teachers to provide financial education even sooner. For this work, the Central Ohio OEA/NEA honored Cordray with the Friend of Education award.

In addition to offering many financial education workshops to senior citizens, students, women, victims of domestic violence, and people who want to repair their credit, the Treasury created an online financial education center, YourMoneyNowOnline.org, that brings important real-time tools and answers to families who either find themselves in financial difficulty or want to avoid it.

An active community servant, Cordray has worked steadfastly to fight home foreclosure in Ohio. The Treasury has helped organize more than 50 Save Our Homes county task forces, which combine the efforts of government, non-profits, and the private sector to match resources to those facing foreclosure. Along with Chief Justice Moyer, Cordray helped organize a state effort to implement mediation programs in foreclosure cases to keep families in their homes. In 2008, Neighborhood Housing Services honored Cordray for his long-time commitment to this issue.

Cordray’s first community service was as a child, volunteering alongside his parents who worked on behalf of the developmentally disabled. This experience affected him so deeply that, as a State Representative, he sponsored the Community Service Education Act to promote service learning as a way to teach children responsibility and moral values in our schools.

In addition to serving as Franklin County Treasurer and a State Representative, Cordray was Ohio’s first State Solicitor, conducting and supervising Ohio’s toughest cases in the state and federal courts. In 2005 he was named the national “County Leader of the Year” by American City & County magazine. An attorney by profession, he clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justices Byron White and Anthony Kennedy, and later returned to argue six cases before the Court. He also taught for 15 years at the Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law.

Amish GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Amish and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. I have left this message at this WikiProject's talk page so that any interested members can assist in helping the article keep its GA status. In reviewing the article, I have found there are a few issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left messages on the talk pages of the main contributors of the article along with several related WikiProjects. Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix if multiple editors assist in the workload. I have had to browse reference-only books by local historians to gather my information, and I imagine that the other rural townships will have the same issue. Perhaps a tag seeking local talent to provide essential information would work.

While doing some Googling trying to find some info on Jasper Mills, Ohio (which I've just created an article for), I came across an old book on the history of Fayette County, Ohio from 1914. I haven't looked through it as it's several hundred pages in length, but it might be a good resource for those who want more info for articles on Fayette County places. Suggestion for townships...

Seeing as to how there are currently 1,314 articles in the Townships in Ohio category, I propose we re-structure the category in the same way that we did the High schools in Ohio category - create 88 new sub-categories ("Townships in {county name} County, Ohio"), then move the appropriate township articles to each sub-category. I realize that townships are a bit different since they include the county name in the article, but it might make things look a bit nicer and would probably help people more easily find information on a township in a particular county, especially in cases where there are several different townships with the same name (such as Union Township - there's one in Clermont County, one in Clinton County, one in Fayette County...). If nobody is opposed to this idea, I'd be more than willing to take on the task of re-categorizing everything. Oldiesmann (talk) 03:56, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

One thing I did notice though, the main township list says "1362 current and historic townships" and I only found 1342. (Adding the 1314 in the existant cat, the 7 in the defunct, and the 21 in the defunt Cuyahoga article) If you count the number of article listed on the township list you get 1362. Ohio-related articles needing geographical coordinates

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles, I've found some Ohio-related articles that I believe are about places, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Ohio articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

• Georgian Heights
• Germain Amphitheater
• German Baptist Church
• German Heritage Museum
• Gifford State Forest (Ohio)
• Glacial till plains (Ohio)
• Glen Helen Nature Preserve
• Glenville, Cleveland
• Goggin Ice Arena

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 542 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing|Ohio}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Ohio articles needing geographic coordinates

54 articles in Category:Ohio articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. Participants page layout

I was wondering what you guys thought about remodeling the participants page. It could be a wiki-sortable table, with columns of {{User}}, Description left, and location if they listed it on either the page or their userspace. That way if someone wants to contact someone in Akron to see if they can take a picture for an article. They can click the sort button for city and have them all sorted right there. To whom it may concern,

I was recently adding external links to my website www.lorain.com that serves all of Lorain County, OH. We offer news, real estate, classifieds, personals, job listings, events, business directory, city guides, coupons, contests, and fundraisers for local non-profit organizations throughout Lorain County.

After adding several links I was told that I can no longer add any further links because I was adding to many, would be my guess. However, I feel that offering an external link to www.lorain.com on Wikipedia would benefit your site visitors as well. These external links would only be posted on Lorain County cities and villiages, as these are the only people it would benefit.

Our guidlines on this matter (WP:EL#ADV, WP:LINKFARM, and WP:NOTADVERTISING) are quite clear. Further, Wikipedia is not a directory. External links are to be used for locations of further information not yet included in the article (e.g. a link to an entry from a relaible source on the history of Lorain County). External links should also be directly related to the topic, not just generally related because the topic of the article happens to be in Lorain County. A link to your personal company's website is a conflict of interest. I would not advise continuing to add it. User Nyttend vs. Elmore, Ohio

User Nyttend repeatedly makes bad edits (albeit generally with good intentions) on the Elmore, Ohio page. His edits have consistently stuck to "factual" sources which are not quite as sound as he imagines. Not much we can do to change that. But he no longer allows any edit to the page by taking advantage of the fact that the average citizen of Elmore does not know the proper format.

If there were an editor to take his place who was actually concerned with making the Elmore, Ohio page accurate, that editor would probably spend less time denying that rivers and creeks which run through town exist. He would also spend less time calling the Elmore Car "silliness" when it was, in fat, a fairly noteworthy historical contribution made by the community.

I do not know how Wikipedia works in terms of editors, but if any of you are established contributors with any pull... and a desire for the Ohio wiki to be accurate, it would certainly be nice if you could help this user understand why his edits are not as productive as he thinks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.60.201.191 (talk) 17:14, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Does the content you add come from a reliable source, do you use footnotes? IF you answer to either of those questions then there is a possibility of a problem. Is Nyttend a bit strict with the articles he watches over? Generally, yes...but we all have to be a bit or all kinds of cruft would fill up WIkipedia's articles. The best thing to do if you have a problem with an editor is to discuss the issue on the article's Talk: page or contect them on their user talk page. We can't "take each other's places", we watch and edit the articles we want to. He could have been a bit more helpful in his explanations, but, in theory, everything in Wikipedia should be sourced (although it's not in practice). Any unsourced, debated information can be removed. I don't see why he argues that the river does not run through the location, but, if it does, I bet we could find a source saying so. Okay, looking through the history and the article, I have a few points. I note that you added the car statement (here), which I agree with the other editors that it doesn't belong in the article, especially in the introduction, without any sources. As for the river, if you look at the About Elmore section, you can see it's already noted that the river is in the town. I clarified this, as well as added a source, as you can see in this diff. What it looks like the best article we have right now on the topic is Kao Corporation, they bought Jergens and have their US operations headquartered in Cincinnati. Woodbury Soap Company also has a bit of information about the company. The article should probably be Andrews Jergens Company (redirecting to Kao). 107 OVI

There is a historical biographic novel called "The Flying Dutchmen" by Andrew B. Suhrer that chronicles the 107th OVI and the role his great grandfather Fernando Suhrer. Fernando Suhrer rose through the ranks to reach the rank of Major. He was later murdered in Fernandina Beach, Florida by Thomas Jefferson Eppes, great grandson of Thomas Jefferson. This book is well written and the research is excellent. I live in northeast Florida where the later chapters of this book take place. The island is in the 1000 Islands region on the St. Lawrence Seaway, which would place it pretty much on the Ontario-New York border. Terex article

Dear WikiProject Ohio members:

Please excuse me if inadvertently violate protocol involved in your editing and control process. I don't mean to do so. I'm looking for some help and would be more than happy to collaborate with whomever is involved in this project interested in the article on the formerly Hudson, Ohio based Terex(then GM Terex). I'm sorry to say that it is out of date and inaccurate in several respects. It needs a broader perspective. I certainly respect the Ohio connection in the company history and would want to retain that. I met many friendly GM Terex retirees at a meeting two years ago at the Hudson Library. However, the Terex of today belongs to the world and has substantial operations in other states (IA, MS, MN, SD, WA, TX, OK, SC, to name a few,)as well as in Germany, the UK, Italy, China, and elsewhere. You can understand that our employees who have seen the current article find it unsatisfactory. Rather than provide new material or photos to this article and then have the new material edited by one of your members, I'd like to reach some consensus that would be acceptable to your project that would also accurate provide information needed for those researching the company of today. I'm looking forward to a response and hope that as an Ohio State graduate (MA, Journalism, 1984)I could be granted some kind of provisional standing with your project. :)

1. Someone has tagged a few sentences "citation needed" - it would be great to get those cleaned-up.
2. There seems to be a small discrepancy between Apollo 11 and Neil Armstrong concerning how much fuel the lunar lander had for landing.

Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

• The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
• The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
• I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
  • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
  • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
  • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
• The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
• The data is now retained indefinitely.
• The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
• Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [1]

Danny Thomas page

Someone (most likely the improbable subject child) keeps adding that Thomas had a second son by an illicit affair. Unverifiable, Family denies.) The only source for this "information" is the subject child's website, and a website of his "crazy mother", whom he believes although he states she abandoned him at 14, was abusive and was not of stable mind. This "child" claims Thomas left "death messages" in his autobiography to him and his mother and is responsible for the death of his child. You can see the mothers website at www.claudiaokeefe.com. Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation

We may need some eyes on this article. Yesterday a new user Michelle Gatchell (talk · contribs) replaced it with a rather bland PR piece, removing all reference to various past scandals; when this was reverted she explained on her talk page that she works in media relations for the Bureau "and we want to put our information on it." I explained about COI and offered her the choice of making proposals on the talk page or making a draft article in user space; she chose the latter, and I have copied the existing article into User:Michelle Gatchell/Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation for her to work on, and given her pointers to useful guidelines. Understood. My question was whether Wiki has been granted permission to use by Ohio specifically. For instance, on the OH Supreme Court site(part of Ohio.gov), they allow "limited license to access and make personal use of their site and not to download...without expressed written consent." I see. Then the answer is again likely not or most certainly not. I'm not even sure what body (legislator? governor?) would have the authority to grant written permission to use the pictures on Ohio.gov. Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

According to the importance scale, only universities with more than 50,000 students are considered "high" importance and only those with more than 20,000 are considered "mid" importance. According to List of colleges and universities in Ohio#Ranked by Enrollment, this means that only OSU qualifies for "high" importance (and only did so in the past 5-6 years), and only 5 others qualify for "mid" importance. The remainder, including Case Western Reserve University (the highest ranked national university in Ohio by US News & World Reports) and Oberlin College (the highest ranked liberal arts college in Ohio and the first US university to regularly admit female and black students) are ranked "low" - the same as individual sports events and city parks. Ranking by enrollment alone (especially with such high requirements) seems to be a rather poor way to measure the importance of a university to a region. Mr.Z-man 01:13, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

I also agree that there needs to be additional criteria established. Perhaps 20,000 or 25,000 could be one criterion for "high" importance, but also factoring in rankings and national exposure or notability (Oberlin and Case, despite being small both have significant notability currently and historically) including rankings or history. Ohio State is hardly the only "high" importance school in the state by any measure...certainly the largest and probably the best known in terms of exposure to the average person (mostly through athletics). --JonRidinger (talk) 17:24, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). Ohio gubernatorial elections

I found some lists of elections for governors (along with secretary of state) up to 1920. It also includes total number of votes and party. Ohio election statistics Ohio gubernatorial elections

Apple (automobile)

The Apple (automobile) article is currently at AfD. The company was in existence in 1917-18 and very few references are available online. Are there any editors in the Dayton area who are able to research through contemporary newspapers of the time to definitively establish the notablity of this short-lived automobile manufacturer? Cleveland Museum of Art

I realize that the building had been closed to visitors for the $350+ million in renovations for several years, but seriously, this article is woefully bad for such an outstanding museum (not to mention a major Ohio cultural institution). I've started to renovate the article, but I'm having issues with the image in the infobox (it may be due to the file type). Anyone who would be so kind as to upload (and insert) a more flattering photo of the building would be welcome to do so (I'd go take a pic myself, but living in Chicago now, it's not really feasible). In any case, there is no reason why this article can't eventually be a 'feature' -- I do realize no one has even assessed it yet, despite what ought to be presumed so far as its relativity on the 'importance scale' for Project Ohio articles. Comair HQ

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Ohio Civil War regimental histories

After months of work, I have just finished creating 209 original articles of Ohio Civil War regimental histories listed at List of Ohio Civil War units. The articles represent all of the infantry, artillery, and cavalry units that completed organization. Several more irregular or short-term units remain, but it's time for me to move on to another project.

I hope this has been helpful for WikiProject Ohio and that work continues to improve the articles I created and those that others have created.

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Caterpillar Club

The Caterpillar Club relates to pilots who have escaped from an aircraft using a parachute. Although one manufacturer resides in Ohio, it seems far-fetched to link the article with that manufacturer. I want to remove the template from the Talk page in accordance with wp:spam. Could I have comments on the Talk:Caterpillar Club page please?

While I would personally not call the project banner spam, editors are free to add or remove them as they see fit. The article is categorized under "History of Dayton, Ohio". It seems reasonable for the algorithm which added the tag to assume that that meant it was an important part of Dayton's history and therefore Ohio's history given Dayton's prominence in Ohio. I would suggest that if the article doesn't merit a project banner that the category probably also doesn't belong. But that's just my opinion. Shep^Talk 01:38, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

I am starting sections in the talk pages of various WikiProjects to indicate which periodicals are available through online subscription databases available to me, and indicating that any individuals interested in getting information from them could drop me an e-mail and I would forward whatever is available. The Akron Beacon Journal is available from 1998 through today. I would request that someone add a section to the main project page with that information, which I can expand with additional resources over the weeks ahead. Thank you.
