WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Hi Piotrus, I don't know how helpful this is, but I translated the lede section from the article at es.wikipedia. I still think this might be a speedy deletion candidate because the Spanish article included only one citation, confirming only the dates of birth and death. Cholula forks

I've forked several articles from the Cholula, Puebla article: San Francisco Acatepec, Santa María Tonantzintla, San Gabriel Convent, and Plaza de la Concordia.

I've noted the forks at Talk:Cholula, Puebla and suggested additional trimming to the "Pyramid of Cholula and Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Church" section since there are separate articles about both. None of these articles are ideal, but hopefully they will get the ball rolling on some better standalone articles about seemingly notable topics. Currency symbol for the Mexican Peso

At Template talk:Dollar sign#Mexican peso error? there is a discussion about the symbol to use for the Mexican Peso in an internationla context (eg MX$, M$, Mex$). This one here is good. But as I looked more into it, it seems like the church used to be a convent called Jesus Maria. There is a book about it and plenty of mentions in Google Books and elsewhere. The first article called it a "former convent". MX (✉ • ✎) 21:16, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Should there be an article for this monument in CDMX?

Can someone confirm if this source is about File:Ext. Museo Memoria y Tolerancia - 8.jpg and whether or not an article should be created for this monument? • @Another Believer: It seems like it's not. This other source similar to yours has an image showing the monument. The sources you and I shared describe the monument as a placa (plaque), not a statue (like the image). Google image search can help find other instances of an image, which may have more info. This may also reveal copyright problems. You can also find more info when there is a visible sign or plaque. Thank you for identifying the Mother's Monument -- I'd be happy to create a stub, but do you think "Mother's Monument" is the most appropriate title for English Wikipedia? As for the locations of the other churches, your best bet might be to actually take a quick look at this gallery to see images of nearby locations. I kept all images in chronological order, so for example if you're trying to identify image #500, might be helpful to look at images #495-505, to see surrounding areas. I believe the first sculpture image above depicts Franklin D. Roosevelt. I'm struggling to find sourcing, but surely there is some coverage explaining why there's a statue of FDR installed in Chapultepec. Another Believer, I think it must be tied to his support of Mexico's oil nationalization in 1938 (via the Good Neighbor Agreement). Oil discussions play a big role in Mexico's national identity, sense of sovereignty, and economic progress. The fact that FDR approved of such a move despite losing U.S. assets and multiple calls for intervention made him really popular in Mexico. MX (✉ • ✎) 16:02, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

Battles involving Mexico not translated

I have noticed that several battles in Mexican wars are not traslated to english. When I was looking at unpopular battles of the Second French Intervention are linked to the spanish article because there is no page in english, and lest´s be honest, english is the most read language in Wikipedia. Duplicate museum article

Francisco Villa Museum is actually about the Historical Museum of the Mexican Revolution (which is not called the Francisco Villa Museum), which already has an article, but there is a separate Francisco Villa Museum in Durango. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Fresnillo

1. I saw this article on the project's cleanup list. The Fresnillo article has been tagged as unreferenced since 2009. I found an online article about Fresnillo from the Enciclopedia de los Municipios y Delagaciones de México: [[3]]. A quick read of this source seems to support many parts of the Wikipedia article and I used it for an inline citation to support one paragraph. Before I go any further by adding inline citations based on this source, I wanted to get some opinions from editors who are more familiar with Spanish-language sources: is this online encyclopedia an RS?

2. Comments on the talk page ask whether the EN article is a translation of the ES article. The content of both articles is similar and the ES article, though not tagged, has the same lack of references. The article on Chihuahua City[5], however, gives the name of as "Museo de la Revolución Mexicana (Casa de Villa)." Alas, there is no supporting citation. Hi. I'm a mexican user from Spanish Wikipedia. I noticed that some information, logos and flags are incorrect or imprecise (For example this one that is outdated). Although I could make the changes, I would not like to make them arbitrarily and without consulting you. Fuerte avocado info in the Atlixco article

I was reading up on Fuerte avocados (I have a tree in my yard) and discovered that the parent tree for the Fuerte was discovered in Atlixco, MX in 1911. I hopped over to the Atlixco wikipedia article and didn't find any mention of this wonderful fact. A quick Googling turned up a few credible sources that support the story.

Is it appropriate to add this info the the Atlixco article, and if so where? Though once the dominant avocado in California agriculture, it's long been surpassed by the Hass because of its tough skin. So I'm not sure it belongs in the economy section. Many avocado lovers still know and love the Fuerte for its wonderful, rich flavor. So would still love to add this interesting fact, just don't know where is appropriate.

Any advice is appreciated.

Although perhaps not currently an important part of the local eceonomy, it obviously was at one time, and there are already three paragraphs in that section devoted to agriculture. The articles for the 31 states currently have diverse forms (most of them wrong) of describing their role as administrative divisions of Mexico. Here's a list:

Most prevalent (20 out of 31) are variations of "is one of the 32 states that/which comprise/compose/constitute/make up the (32) Federal Entities of Mexico". This is wrong, as there are only 31 states and Mexico City is not a state (even after losing its status of federal district and becoming more state-like as an autonomous entity in 2016). But even if one were to inaccurately count Mexico City as a state, it makes little sense to say "32 states that make up the 32 federal entities", as there is then no distinction and one might as well just say "is one of the 32 states".

We should agree on a correct form and use it consistently in all the articles. My suggestion would be to just say "is one of the 31 states of Mexico" and leave it up to the link to explain the details, since it's an introductory sentence. If the details are included, they should be included correctly, e.g. "is one of the 31 states that, together with Mexico City, form the 32 federal entities of Mexico".

Other pages also incorrectly include Mexico City among the states; see Ranked list of Mexican states and the links there.

Also, it's "Federal Entities" (capitalized) most of the time, but sometimes "federal entities" (not capitalized) and sometimes "federative entities" (from the Spanish "entidad federativa"). The form "federal entities" seems to be more common than the more literal "federative entities", and I don't think it should be capitalized, since it's not the official Spanish name of the units. So I would suggest to use "federal entities" (not capitalized) throughout.

Background

As stated by State flags of Mexico, only 7 states have an official flag (de jure): Baja California Sur, Durango, Guerrero, Jalisco, Querétaro, Quintana Roo and Tlaxcala. Tamaulipas uses its coat of arms officially as a flag. Baja California Norte and Campeche "shall not [have an] official state flag" as per their constitution. The remaining 22 states* (*Mexico City is not a state but for simplicity of this RFC it will be considered as one) don't have an official flag and they merely use the coat of arms as their de facto flag.

Among the official flags, only 2 are different enough (Jalisco and Tlaxcala); the remaining 5 (+ Tamaulipas) are a repetition of the coat of arms against a white background.

I tried to find some kind of guideline about this everywhere, but there is nothing written. I found this archived discussion with a similar query.

This is an example of an article with a flag and without it.

I've also seen these flags being removed, either, because of their non-legal status or because they look repetitive. So what should be done here? (CC) Tbhotch^™ 20:23, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

Possible options

• A: Include the flags in all 32 states, regardless of their legal status.
• B: Include the flags in all the states where it is used de jure and de facto (excludes Baja California Norte and Campeche)
• C: Include them only in all the states where it is used de jure (Baja California Sur, Durango, Guerrero, Jalisco, Querétaro, Quintana Roo and Tlaxcala)
• C1: Same as C, but also includes Tamaulipas.
• D: Include them in Jalisco and Tlaxcala only. The flags are official and different from their coat of arms.
• E: Exclude them from all the state articles as they are repetitions of their own official coat of arms.

Discussion

• Invited from WT:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology: Anything between B and C1 is fine, depending on context and usefulness, provided it is done consistently - i.e. if you are going to include de facto flags for one state, you need to do it for all in the same situation. Options A and D make personal determinations about flag status and would be proscribed as WP:OR. Option E is factually incorrect in at least two cases, constitutes OR in the case of five states with de jure flags - by law they are not the same as the coat of arms - and is overall antithetical to the purpose of Wikipedia to collect and diseminate verifiable information. Marathons in Mexico

Greetings everyone! I noticed there were very few pages for the marathons in Mexico, but there are quite a few marathons in the nation—some of the are major international athletic events. I created two from pages that existed in Spanish Wikipedia, but there are still quite a few to be created. Two road races of major importance are the Guadalajara Half Marathon and the Guadalajara Marathon, both of which are IAAF-labeled races (and the only North American races still in red in the World Athletics Label Road Races template and pages such as 2018 IAAF Road Race Label Events. There are seven marathons listed (with most in red) on the List of marathon races in North America page. Would anyone be able to comb through some Spanish language sources to find good information on the basics of these races? The winner lists can always come later.

Is 'National Research and Technology Council (Mexico)' the same entity as 'Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (Mexico)'?

If these are the same thing, should their pages be merged? I can't tell if they are the same or if I am just confused. The first is a stub and an orphan, and the second is a very good article with lots of sources, so I would say that the first should be merged into the second, or redirected there - but I am new and don't really know either way. The Boy on the Seahorse

If I'm understanding correctly, there are two copies of The Boy on the Seahorse. I'm not sure if some of the titles/translations I'm seeing online refer to both or either. Might someone be able to help flesh out this entry with more detail and perhaps clarify if some of the titles refer to one or the other? @Another Believer: Replicas rarely get a different name. I found it is consistently called "El niño sobre el caballo de mar" at PuertoVallarta.net,[6] which seems to be the private tourism platform of the city (caps apart, as Spanish doesn't capitalize everything). Puerto Vallarta itself calls it El caballito[7]; the government of Mexico El caballito de mar[8]. Zamarripa is the sole person that knows the exact name but there is no way to contact him. @Another Believer: If an established English name exists for the subject, you use the English name; if no English name exists for the subject, you use the original name; if multiple English names exist for the subject, you use the most common one, if there is none, you use the original one. If there are several names for the original name (like in this statue) WP:Common name still applies and every alternate name should be redirected to it. Me again! I've tried updating the list of statues at Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres based on a source shared on the talk page as well as the Spanish Wikipedia entry. However, at the bottom of Talk:Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres, I've identified some names mentioned at Spanish Wikipedia but not illustrated in the source. (Yes, the people are mentioned in the source's prose, but I'm hesitant to add them to the list of statues unless I know for sure the statues exist.) Google Maps says it is (but it's GMaps), but this source has the address written as "Aquiles Serdán, Col. Emiliano Zapata, Isla del Río Cuale, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco", so it's part of it. Puente Rio Cuale

I've created the stub Puente Río Cuale about the pedestrian bridge along the Malecon, which connects PV's Centro and Zona Romántica neighborhoods.

I've noticed this source discusses the vehicle bridge (part of Ignacio L. Vallarta street). I'm wondering if: 1) This bridge should have an article and 2) If either bridge has more formal or descriptive name, since both seem to generally be referred to as "puente del río Cuale".

Municipios

Municipalities (boroughs in Mexico City) in Mexico are the same as counties in the US, not cities like in other countries. People have merged pages and mixed information for municipalities and their municipal seat cities. Municipalities are made up of many towns and cities. They are seperate entities which don't share geographical boundaries and often don't share the same official name. They should all have separate pages. Thank you

So is the High Altar and all the chapels, but they are merely mentioned at Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. That page is a 2009 good article, but I don't know if it meets the modern criteria. I think there is something wrong with the SVG file, or maybe something else, but some elements of the flag displayed on the article for the Second Mexican Empire is broken. I'm unsure if this issue is the same for everyone else, however.

H Para Hombres

Would some members from this WikiProject mind taking a look at H Para Hombres and assessing it for WP:NPERIODICAL? It's completely unsourced and is currently bascially nothing more than a brief introductory paragraph followed by a long embedid list of celebrity names. The magazine is probably notable enough for an article and perhaps that are non-English sources that can be used to help establish that. Supreme Executive Power moves and article history

Since 2010, there have been at least three regular moves and three additional copy-paste moves of the article that is currently at the title Supreme Executive Power. It has also been at Triumvirate (Mexico), Provisional Government of Mexico (1823-1824), Provisional Government of Mexico (1823–24), and most recently Provisional Government of Mexico, before being moved back to Supreme Executive Power a couple days ago. The history is a mess such that I cannot do a history merge to fix the copy-paste moves, so I slapped some copied templates on Talk:Supreme Executive Power to try to ensure things are appropriately attributed. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

I think Uruapan could be pushed to GA status

Uruapan is currently rated as "C-Class" on the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mexico/Assessment#Quality_scale, but I think it's a much better article than that. Is there anyone who is familiar with Michoacán cities who could check if this is the case, and if so, could work on getting it reviewed and maybe push it to Good Article status? Women in Green's 5th Edit-a-thon

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.
