Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. Sardine article

Cross-posted between WikiProjects Fishes, Food and drink and this one.

I have some information to add to the article Sardine. I have both scientific, commercial and cultural-related edits to make but my obstacle is that the article is a a bit of a mess and would like to know about your opinion on what is the best approach to take. To be as simple as possible, the article as it is now have an intoduction discussing the commercial use of the Sardines; a section in the form of a list concerning the scientific classification; another one called 'Sardine in popular culture' (a bizarre mix of sardine's cans and art, sardines in countries' culture and a history of fishing per country) and finally comes the tiny 'nutrition' section. I hope you've already got the picture of the mess.

So, what can be done with that article? My opinion is to split the article but I prefer to hear about other alternatives, if there are any. -- FayssalF - ^{Wiki me up®} 10:20, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. History of fishing needs a lot of work

I came to the History of fishing article hoping to find a good home for some details I read in this article:

but I gave up even trying. History of fishing needs a lot of work. I'm no expert on the subject, so all I was able to do is use some clean-up templates on it and remove a randomly inserted and long summary of salmon in mythology (an interesting topic, but not deserving of the level of coverage it had). The article looks like disorganized collection of topics spun off of fishing; what it needs is a decent introduction, and a top-down structure for its topics and section headings. I re-classified it from high-importance article to top-importance article because it is such a basic fishing-related topic. Please give that article your attention. Eutrophication GA Sweeps: On Hold

I have reviewed Eutrophication for GA Sweeps to determine if it still qualifies as a Good Article. In reviewing the article I have found several issues, which I have detailed here. Image on a template

Template:Fishing techniques topics has a cartoon-like image currently, and I think that no image would be better. Awaiting comments. Snowman (talk) 10:22, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

I think that this image in the navbox is not informative, and prolongs download times on dozens of pages. It only features one fishing technique (as a cartoon-like drawing) and would be irrelevant on many pages, such as the "cormorant fishing" page. Some articles have their own relevant illustrations, and I think that an extra image in the navbox is not needed. Some articles, such as the "Hawaiian sling" do not have a relevant image, and I think that it is wrong that this image should appear on pages without any other illustration. The image is smaller than a thumb image, and occupies just 5K. The load time penalty on a bottom-end 50K bps modem is one second, and on a more typical 5M bps bandwidth is 10 milliseconds. Any browser since 1995 will cache the image the first time you use it, so moving between different tackle articles incurs no further time penalty. The image sparsely pictures what is overwhelmingly the iconic and dominant tackle used in recreational fishing–the rod, line and hook. The Hawaiian sling is a very minor technique, and rather than removing the template image (which gives a sense of continuity as you move from article to article), it would be better to find an image of a Hawaiian sling. I think the argument is more to do with personal preference about one how relates to images. --Geronimo20 (talk) 21:34, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

It is my objective opinion that the image is not helpful. I expect that you are aware that there are many other pages where the navbox is shown that do not have images apart from the cartoon-like image in the navbox. In many cases the only image on a page is the cartoon-like image and it is not relevant to the page on which it appears. The template managed fine prior to addition of the image in May this year. The image was added by this edit. I can understand the tendency for editors to defend their own edits, but often outsiders can judge better. More opinions are welcome. GAN backlog reduction - Sports and recreation

As you may know, we currently have 400 good article nominations, with a large number of them being in the sports and recreation section. As such, the waiting time for this is especially long, much longer than it should be. As a result of this, I am asking each sports-related WikiProject to review two or three of these nominations. If this is abided by, then the backlog should be cleared quite quickly. Some projects nominate a lot but don't review, or vice-versa, and following this should help to provide a balance and make the waiting time much smaller so that our articles can actually get reviewed! Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Fisheries and Fishing to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Fisheries and Fishing/Article traffic statistics.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. Spearfishing - external links

I've just removed the External links section of Spearfishing, which had become simply a WP:LINKFARM.
