Monastery, Torquay - proposed deletion

I've proposed this article as I believe it falls short of the requirement for notability. The only thing distinctive about this former nightclub is that it closed down after a drug bust, which is nothing special really. Totnesmartin (talk) 19:59, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

South West Coast Path

South West Coast Path has now been a stable GA for over a year, with recent additions particularly in relation to some places in Cornwall. Apart from a few sections without citations I was wondering what others think would be needed to achieve the Featured article criteria? Would anyone from this wikiproject be interested in working on getting the South West Coast Path article to FA? Ealdred (archbishop) and Tavistock Abbey

I'm trying to get Ealdred up to FA status, and need to nail down whether or not any of the ruins at Tavistock Abbey date from his time as abbot, which was about 1027 to 1046 or so. From the pictures I've seen, it would appear unlikely, they all have the pointed arch common to Gothic architecture, but I'd like to make sure. Bigbury parish split

At the moment, Bigbury-on-Sea and St Ann's Chapel, which are both villages, redirect to Bigbury, which is a village and the collective parish for all of the villages. I think that Bigbury-on-Sea is notable enough to have its own article, not so sure about St Ann's, but it might be possible. If anything Bigbury-on-Sea is more notable than Bigbury-on-Land. BOS is probably notable (does having a Blue Flag beach count?), but I'm struggling to get any info abot St Ann's, beyond its having a post office and a pub. Cullompton

I've been working on Cullompton for some time now and it is no longer start class IMHO but I'd be grateful if someone would give it a review and let me know what it now is. I'd give it a B-Class. Needs two or three more paragraphs in the lead for improvement (that's just at first glance). Referencing is generaly good. Totnesmartin also assessed it as B-Class. Jolly Ω Janner 12:21, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

I would like to think that Cullompton is plodding its way to GA status now (it has undergone a lot of expansion and IMHO improvement since it was given B-Class). There are two major issues I want to address - one is the Citation needed tags in the Government section, and the other is the fact that I don't have page numbers for the use of the Second Book of Cullompton. I hope that a book I have on order from the library will help with the first, and I plan to do the second this week. Other than that I'd like people's opinion on whether it is a suitable candidate for GA submission.--NHSavage (talk) 12:19, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

User:Seatonnet persists in adding spam links to Seaton. He/she owns these websites which makes it a conflict of interest as well as spam. Barnstaple - decontamination

There has recently been some quite comprehensive vandalism to the Barnstaple article in the past few days. Much had already been repaired, when I came across it, but I have also reinstated the section on Transport, which had been deleted completely. The whole article however, would probably benefit from a closer inspection by local experts to ensure all the damage has been repaired - some of the awards in "Britain in Bloom" look a little suspect, for example. I started creating a navbox for the parishes of Devon, but I didn't expect it to be quite as big as it turned out. Do you think it would be better to use civil parish navboxes at the shire district level rather than one navbox for the entire county? (bare in mind that Devon is a rather large county). NCI Froward Point - AfD

I have just created this article, one I believe is a well referenced article, though still a stub. The article was nominated for deletion despite being well references very shortly after I moved it to the main namespace. I believe that the article covers a notable item which has good local interest and local notability and that an article about it, a South Devon landmark close to Dartmouth, Kingswear and Brixham, warrants an article in its own right. Just to play the Devil's advocate, in my mind Devonshire is historical/traditional Devon, and if you look in the category, the items are... sporadic. We have clotted cream, which is current. Hog's pudding, which is borderline traditional. Devonshire eggs which I've never heard of but appears to be traditional and Pasty, which is pretty Cornish. Hardly the best argument against but I think the largest issue is the lack of articles. Can anyone think of any other Devon foods? I'm happy to write the articles. Worm 09:10, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Help on Three Hammers?

Ran across the article Three Hammers (apparently a kind of cider) on WP:UNCAT. This seems to be of great Devon pop-culture interest, so posting here in case anyone has any good references to add, or maybe a photo of a bottle, and/or the colourless cider in a glass? I can't find much info on it - I doubt if it is worthy of its own article. Even its manufacturer Devon Cider Company, which I see you created yesterday, doesn't seem notable either: a few notices that it has gone into administration hardly shows that it's worthy of notice. I've prodded them both, sorry. On the other hand, considering the size of the Cider article, I should think there's scope for a spinout of White cider, in which these topics could be mentioned.  —SMALLJIM  10:56, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Strike that. I find that Three Hammers survived an AfD in 2007 (apparently it is "legendary") - in view of its reputation, perhaps I'm lucky that I've never heard of it. Is it still made? Devon's hundreds

I think that the hundreds are really quite an important part of the history of the county. I started looking into this as I wanted a link for Cully to Hayridge (hundred) and it wasn't there. What is disappointing is that we seem really behind the curve on this compared to Cornwall and Dorset. I will strive to create stubs for all 32(!) hundreds but it would be nice to have some maps and more info on at least some of the larger hundreds. However, any extra help, especially if any map geeks out there would like to try and map the hundreds, would be very welcome.--NHSavage (talk) 21:07, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Speede would be very helpful but my ideal solution would be like what our Cornish neighbours have at Hundreds of Cornwall with a map for each hundred. Of course those lightweights only had 10 hundreds. ;-)--NHSavage (talk) 21:52, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Re mapping: have you made a request for a map at WP:GL/M? They are helpful, in my experience. There is a map outlining the Devon hundreds in W. G. Hoskins' Devon (p. 51 of my 1972 edition) which could be used as a basis. Interestingly the map shows 33 (not 32) hundreds (I haven't worked out where the anomaly is), and in the text he also makes the point that there were some changes in them over time. Curious there is a discussion on hundreds on this WikiProject. First one I've encountered as I've been informing projects of the discussion below. In the case of Hayridge, sources write it as hundred of Hayridge. I've not encountered outside of Wikipedia the usage of Hayridge (hundred). This is also the case of all the other hundreds I've read about in sources - they are either written as Hundred of Foo, or Foo Hundred. I think we should be flexible about which way we title an article, so as not to impose conformity for conformity's sake, but to follow reliable sources in titling articles on hundreds as either Hundred of Hayridge or Hayridge Hundred as appropriate. I agree that we should be flexible and of course we could always redirect Hayridge (Hundred) to Hayride Hundred of Hundred of Hayridge as we see fit. To be honest, I have only just started on the Hundreds of Devon and to get going I did a copy and paste from Penwith (hundred) so I am very open to suggestions. I am mostly interested in Hayridge (or Sulfretona) as Cullompton was within it. If you want to move feel free. Gotham House

Dr. Blofeld and myself have been working on the article for Gotham House, Tiverton. There's a newspaper report that says the house is "rumoured to be haunted", but I haven't been able to find anything else out about this. Can anybody help? Is there a mention in Peter Underwood's Ghosts of Devon for example? Thanks, Moswento ^talky 14:54, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't have a copy of Underwood, but a Google book search has no hits on "gotham" in the book. The house turns up a number of times in the British Newspaper Archive, up to 1913, but it's mostly the usual trivia - births, marriages, deaths, auctions/sale notices, etc. Though in 1887 a woman who lived at Gotham House was badly injured after falling from a moving train at Tiverton Station. She was taken home where she died a few hours later after the amputation of one of her legs. That's a good origin for a ghost story if you fancy a bit of OR ;-) Oh, and Mrs Poyntz and her daughter "pluckily" dealt with a fire in the breakfast room in 1900. The only other mention I can find is in the Transactions of the Devonshire Association, 1907 - a brief mention that the old entrance to the house was originally ten feet lower than the present entrance. Please help get Devon ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September

This September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades I or grade II*), as recorded by English Heritage. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in England, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by English Heritage. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

• The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
• The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
• The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
• The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
• Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
• The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
• References may be added according to normal WP practice.

Excellent though they are, all those photos on the main Devon Wikiproject page slow down the loading and make it harder to get to the content below them. I propose they are moved to their own subpage, just keeping one or two of the best (of Herby's of course!). Thinking of doing the same with the list of participants too.
