Socrates Nelson

I recently stumbled across the article Socrates Nelson. It seems to have been largely (but not entirely) untouched over the last six+ years. Since then, the article's creator and I have substantially expanded the article, adding an infobox, a number of references, more comprehensive information about Nelson's life, etc. It's not a rush, but I was hoping someone from this WikiProject could re-assess the article's grade as it pertains to this project's scope.

Based on the research I did into the subject, the article is fairly comprehensive, but there are definitely still some gaps that could be filled in (for example, his term in the Minnesota Senate needs fleshing out, and it wouldn't hurt to include more information on e.g. his family life and logging business if it's out there), and it's still actively being worked on.

My personal assessment is that the article is currently a 'C', and might be improved to a 'B' in the near future. Given the subject is a somewhat obscure politician whose career was 150+ years ago, I believe the breadth and quality of content in its current state would be completely satisfactory and useful to a casual reader (in fact, based on the sources I've trawled through thus far, I think this might be the most comprehensive central resource on this man anywhere on the web), but that a 'B' grade just isn't in order yet. @TheTechnician27: I've reassessed it, I agree with C class for biography. I haven't changed the other WikiProjects since you've asked those, too. I left notes in an edit reason, but my best advice now (if you've exhausted sources) is to try and rewrite a little - the prose is fast, it states very simple facts in quick succession and there is likely more level of detail in the sources. Even without more detail, the flow can be improved by changing sentence style, etc. After that, sending it to WP:GOCE for a proper copyedit. I admire GOCE a lot; I have studied and write professionally but for real nuance of appropriate wikistyle it's the frequent copyeditors to ask. Kingsif (talk) 11:44, 24 December 2020 (UTC)

@Kingsif: Thankfully, I hadn't run out of resources just yet; I still had Chronicling America up my sleeve. Having used that now, though, I think I've probably hit a brick wall. After a bit more more touching up (provided I don't stumble across something major), I'll consult GOCE and see how they can help. Although I don't believe there is a lot more detail within the sources I have available, I still recognize that my narrative style is pretty garbage, effectively boiling down to "and then, and then, and then...", so I'm sure they can at least improve the quality of the prose. In the meantime, I've broken up the two largest sections into paragraphs for readabillity, added a bit of information from contemporary news sources, and added a few images for less visual monotony. Hubert Nathan Myers and Clifford Williams

Hi all

I've just started an article for Hubert Nathan Myers and Clifford Williams who spent 43 years in prison of murder before being exonerated. Its clear that they are notable enough for Wikipedia and very widely covered in the media (I've only added a small number of the references available). However I don't understand what to call the article to correctly fit in with Wikipedia policies (biographies are not usually my thing). There appear to be a few options:

1. Keep the article about two people (this makes sense because their stories are so closely related)
2. Split it into two separate biographies
3. Rename the article to be able the case (I assume this is the actual correct one but no idea what to call the case, The state of Florisa vs ??? maybe).

Please feel free to just change it to what is correct

Eni Njoku

Greetings:

I noticed on the biography of the Nigerian scientist Eni Njoku that a user (Fagbohunmichael) around May 2020 erroneously added several references in the Selected Works section that do not belong to that article. They belong to Eni G. Njoku who does not yet have an article. I am new to Wikipedia editing and do not want to tackle removing such a large erroneous segment of the article, hence I am posting here hoping a more experienced editor might be able to help. I have added one correct reference to the top of the list. That reference has publication date 1956. The other references all have publication dates after the death of Eni Njoku.

Francis de Laporte de Castelnau

I may need some help with Francis de Laporte de Castelnau, a 19th century French naturalist and diplomat who also appears to be related to nobility: I am of the opinion that the current page title should be changed, but I'm not sure what it should be. At the very least though his first name tends to be given as "François" rather than "Francis". Looking through the page's history, it used to be titled "François Louis de la Porte, comte de Castelnau", until it was moved to its current title by LouisPhilippeCharles in 2010 (who was indefinitely blocked later that year).

Some other notes:

• His name is given as "François Louis Nompar de Caumont Laporte" in the Australian Dictionary of Biography entry that is used as a reference.
• According to Evenhuis's 2012 Zootaxa article that is also used as a reference, "François Louis Nompar de Caumont de Laporte" is his name on his death certificate.
• Also according to Evenhuis, his real name is "François-Louis Nompar de Caumont La Force", the surname of which (as well as his real birth date) was hidden for many years because he was apparently an illegitimate child (!).
• Finally, the title of Evenhuis's article uses "François-Louis Comte de Castelnau" as a shortened version of this name, although this misses out the "Laporte" name altogether.

So, what should the page's title be instead?

Automated flagging of statements needing citations

Hi, to reduce the burden of manual assessments on part of editors, we are working on an AI to automatically identify issues in statements along the lines of neutrality, clarifications and citations. The AI learns from statements in low quality articles that are problematic. We need some help evaluating the predictions to make them better and prepare for community use. 1. The name of the father of the children of King George VIII. is given as “Alexander”, but should it not be rather George?

Hundreds of articles use "genius" or "genius award" for MacArthur Fellowships, removal as WP:PUFF

The search tool finds 937 hits for "Macarthur genius", a large proportion of which are bio pages of MacArthur Fellowship winners stating that they received "MacArthur genius grants" or similar language with the word "genius".

Clearly those references to "genius" should all be gone as it is not part of the formal or encyclopedic name for the awards, and violates WP:PUFF.

Help improving Nate Morris article

Legacy of Fred Trump

In the article of Fred Trump the last chapter is called legacy. It is not objective but highly subjective. The point of this chapter is clearly to put a negative spin on Donald and Fred Trump. To quote Seth MacFarlane on his view on Trump is not relevant because he supports the Democrates and is clearly biased in this matter. @Josef Steen: The place to discuss this would be at Talk:Fred Trump. But note that your objection to the content on the basis that MacFarlane is biased, is irrelevant. We often include criticism and praise about various subjects. Example: Film critics might hate or love a movie. That is bias, yet we include film critic quotes in film articles. What we endeavour to do, however, is present criticism and praise in such a way as to maintain Wikipedia's neutrality. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:38, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Assistance required please

Hi, I have created a biography page about Dr Eve Afifa Kheir, a very renouned scholar in the minority Druze community. It is the first time I create a page. It is the third time the page gets reviewed. After the first review I added a great number of new reliable outside neutral sources. The professor is very highly revered in the minority Druze community and the information I provided is all backed up by proper reliable references. It seems that since the references are mainly in languages that the reviewers are not necessarily familiar with, they tended to believe that they are not reliable sources. This review process seems very unprofessional. The previous reviewer only asked to add more references and so I did. I would appreciate it if you can assist in having this draft reviewed professionally and accepted since it is important for the minority Druze community to acknowledge their highly revered scholars and pioneering women. Describing child's cause of death in parent's biography

I've searched policies and the MOS but haven't been able to find one: is there a policy or even a style guide on whether the cause of death of a person's child is encyclopedic for the parent's article? Specifically, in the Wikipedia article for Laura Berman, is the third sentence encyclopedic in this three-sentence "Personal life" section of her article?

Berman is married to Samuel Chapman. During the course of their marriage, Chapman and Berman became the parents of three sons: Ethan (born 1996), Sam (2004–2021), and Jackson (born 2005). Sam died on February 7, 2021, aged 16, from what his parents believe to be fentanyl laced Xanax or Percocet which he bought from a drug dealer on Snapchat and were delivered to his house.

The information is correct and is properly referenced to multiple reliable sources. Privacy isn't really an issue since it's been all over the news, and Berman has done multiple television news interviews on his death, including several on the day after he died. Even WP:NOTNEWS only gives guidance for whole articles, not for a sentence within an article (since there's no disputing Laura Berman is sufficiently notable to have a Wikipedia article [and the article was created in 2009]). My question is simply: is the cause of her son's death sufficiently encyclopedic to be in the article about her? OCNative (talk) 01:18, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

I don't know of any policy that deals with this specifically and I would be surprised if there were. It's probably been dealt with in page-specific consensuses before, and whether or not it's encyclopedic I imagine should be decided case-by-case for each article. For example the exact details of how and when a monarch's heir dies is probably extremely relevant in a way that the death of, say, a physicist's child would not be. My feeling after looking over this particular page is that this information is probably not related to her encyclopedic notability at the moment and I think the page would be better if the information were removed. But as you note, that's not because it's private information or anything, I just don't think it's relevant to the purpose of an encyclopedia page about her (though of course that could change with time). What is however not permitted by policy is including the birth years of her surviving children without citations (WP:BLPPRIVACY is explicit that we list the birth year of a living person "provided that there is a reliable source for it"), so I've removed those. - Astrophobe (talk) 03:18, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

I think case-by-case is best. There shouldn't be a project-wide policy. I think in this case it should be included. Prominence in sources should count for a lot. Is the reader best served by including or omitting? Bus stop (talk) 03:37, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

I also think it depends on the circumstances, while being more sensitive to the privacy concerns for parents who are BLPs. The parents seem to be making many public statements about their son's death here, and if a parent talks a lot about the death of their child to the media, that is probably going to be enough to find it to be a significant aspect of their biography. – wallyfromdilbert (talk) 08:38, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

I notice that in multiple articles about Japanese actors and actresses, the infobox contains extensive "notable works" lists which border close to listing every single role they've ever had. Mountbatten-Windsor

I can see some name changes in the royal family articles like Prince George of Cambridge or Anne, Princess Royal Even in their articles it is clearly stated “members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname” Why we are rewriting history by adding Princess Anne’s article to Mountbatten-Windsor surname which she never use. She married two times. Larry Lawton

I'm cleaning up this article. The article originally read like a promotional ad so I've trimmed a lot of the fluff from it. The main problem was a lack of sources, as he hasn't been covered that much in online sources but mostly Florida print newspapers. So I clipped a bunch of newspaper articles on him. Help with a possible citogenesis

Hi there. I'm aware this talk page isn't for a specific article, but Ganesha811 and I have been working to try to figure out what we believe is a citogenesis issue over at the biography Joseph Bazalgette. The article's talk page and this post on the Teahouse are basically what's been discussed up to this point. We've both been searching, and we can't find any pre-2007 sources for the claim that – until today – was made in our article. Along with everything discussed in those two threads, I've also searched the Internet Archive's books, but to no avail. I was hoping anyone here would know a good resource I could use to potentially track down something to confirm the original claim in our article or if anyone here would know of a WikiProject more suited to direct me to such a resource. Recommend adding this project to David Ruggles article

Hello. I've been a long time absent contributor, but recently heard an interview with Jonathan Wells, the author of The Kidnapping Club: Wall Street, Slavery, and Resistance on the Eve of the Civil War on the subject of his book, which included Mr. Ruggles, as he wrote a contemporary artcile on the subject in the early 19th century. David Rogier and MasterClass

Hello! My name is Alyssa and I work for MasterClass, which I've disclosed on the article's talk page, my profile page, and the David Rogier talk page to be fully compliant with the site's rules. My Articles for Creation submission for David Rogier was accepted by one editor and then almost immediately redirected by another, who used the edit summary "there doesn't seem to be any other reason to have this paid-editor article". This comment seems to focus on my conflict of interest and not the subject's notability. Despite my efforts, I've struggled to get additional feedback on this draft article.

Since one editor considered the subject notable and another seems to disagree because of my conflict of interest, are there other editors here willing to take a look to help determine eligibility and/or share additional feedback? Related, I'm also receiving limited feedback at Talk:MasterClass even though I'm using the suggested "request edit" template. Might any project members be able to help here? Thanks in advance! @MC Alyssa: They were right to redirect it; Rogier appears to have done nothing notable enough to pass WP:NBIO except co-found, and serve as CEO of, a company that has a Wikipedia article (MasterClass). Since his notability is tied to the company's history, it should (only) be suitably covered at the company's article. The editor who redirected the article did not do so because of the COI; the edit reason is (being short when) explaining that there is no notability outside the company (and that because of this it's clear it was made by someone related). Simon Bainbridge

I'm not sure how this should be dealt with. An editor changed the article on Simon Bainbridge to say that he died yesterday. I can't find any online report to confirm this, so I reverted the change, but now another editor has added a date of death, again with no reference. Maybe these editors have personal knowledge, but shouldn't Wikipedia wait until there's an official announcement? And if he has died, the category "living people" should be removed. Employer Infobox

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question, but I've been looking for an answer or guideline and haven't had much luck. How do we determine employer for people employed at child subsidiaries? I saw this for Kathleen Kennedy (producer) and Kevin Feige who are the heads of child subsidiaries that are owned by Disney. Kennedy is the president of Lucasfilm and Feige is the head of Marvel Studios and is the CCO at Marvel Entertainment. In order to keep these pages consistent would the parent subsidiary be the employer or would it be the company for which the person works? Search for Wittgenstein scores

Dear all,

As a pianist specifically interested in the works that were written for Paul Wittgenstein, I would like to know who currently possesses the PW Archives in which there are still scores that are unavailable to the public. Even if Wittgenstein himself was unwilling to share his scores during his lifetime, he did say that he didn’t want the works to gather dust on shelves after his death. Unfortunately his widow Hilde Schania let them do just that until she died in 2002. The year after, the collection was bought on a Sotheby’s auction by the Octavian Society in Hong Kong. Although some good work was done there with the music (such as studies, edition and publishing of Franz Schmidt’s three Quintets), a part of the archive was auctioned once more into the hands of someone unknown to me. That most probably means that several works of music are again being kept locked away because someone just paid for it, 60 years after Wittgenstein’s death. I understand very well that some people want to own manuscripts as a form of treasure, but it is my belief that musicians should at any time be allowed to play the compositions. What else is music for, but to be played and heard?!

So, who wants to help me rediscover these works? To name a few which have not been heard in public since Wittgenstein himself played them:

Rudolf Braun - Piano concerto (1926-27)

Sergei Bortkiewicz - Four left-hand transcriptions

Moriz Rosenthal - New Viennese Carnival and two other solo compositions

Eduard Schütt - Paraphrase for piano and orchestra

Luckily, other works are available now through music publishers, libraries and (with some detective work) private persons/family members of the composers. That’s how I have been able to perform several pieces again. After the Covid era has faded, I will continue to revive Wittgenstein’s music - as a soloist and with my ensemble devoted to W’s chamber music. Have a look at www.wittgensteinproject.com.

Could new contributors be provided with a template they can fill in? Or several?

I have a stub (Lionel Bradley Pett) I would like to "upgrade" a little more, but looking at the fully fleshed-out bios like Albert Einstein there are clearly some layout and content "norms" (eg a contents list including "life and career", the sidebar with picture etc). For those who are not very familiar with Wikipedia markup or who just want to have a basic "scaffold", a template they could copy and paste into and customize depending on the information available and what is most relevant would be useful I think.

If the idea seems useful I could try to produce such a template as a draft (and to aid my own work) and more experienced editors could pitch in. What do you think?

The core contest

From June 1 to July 15, the Core Contest will be launched in its ninth iteration. It's an exciting contest, running over a period of six weeks, with £250 of prize money for the articles that are most improved. Just because I see the mention, I would put a note on Bolívar's article: nationalist propaganda is a major part of Chavism and while Venezuelan SPAs aren't so prolific anymore, I think there's been edit wars on how much to hero-fy Bolívar in the past. Tom Little's Sunflower Street

I would like to chage the end date of Tom Little's daily panel Sunflower Street, which is important because it depicted the life of a black community between 1934 and 1950. The strip was written by Tom Sims and drawn by political cartoonist Tom Little, both white. In 1950 it was withdrawn by it's syndicate for possible racial issues. I think that is interestng as a study subject on it's own and in the larger context op King Features history. The Wikipedia page for Tom Little is the only place this panel is mentioned. Further on, I would love to do a seperate entry for Sunflower Street. But for now a factual correction of the end dat would be great. I have found a newspaper clipping stating that Sunflower Street was withdrawn by the syndicate from 1950-04-03. Unfortunately, that clipping is on a blog, run by blogger, which makes the link controversial. Due to the fact that it is an actual newspaper clipping I wonder how I should insert that link. Can anyone help? By the ay, here is the link to the whole blogger page, the clipping (and the date in the file name) is the last one on the page. Notability of executed prisoners

During a discussion about the specific article at Talk:Quintin Jones (prisoner), a user referenced Category:21st-century executions of American people. A quick glance shows that at least half of the articles in this category have hardly any references, and the coverage is almost always "local crime ticker" coverage - i.e. routine and not indicative of notability. Put simply, people who are executed seem to be a target for people to make articles on for two reasons - one to protest the execution because someone's against execution altogether (WP:ADVOCACY), and the second because someone who knew them wants to memorialize them in a WP article (WP:Notability). It would be nice if any highly motivated editors from the biographies project could potentially help going through these articles and determining which of them should likely be sent to a deletion discussion for being non-notable. A Work Group for YouTube and TikTok people?

I'm kind of saddened to bring this up, but articles for YouTube and TikTok people are showing up with greater frequency. I find it tenuous to claim a YouTube or TikTok person is famous by virtue of posting videos of themselves, but there is a mob that supports them. If I am evaluating the landscape properly, about the only thing that's happening is, wikipedia is hosting a bunch of low quality self promoting articles. Due to the mob, it becomes difficult to delete an article that would otherwise fall to the wayside.

Here's my experience: I brought up the deletion of an article on a Talk page, claiming the person was not really notable. I did not feel YouTubing alone rose to wikipedia's bar. Supporters of the person retorted, stating (1) other YouTubers have wiki articles; and (2) the subject in the article was interviewed by a citable source, so the person is notable or important.

I don't find either reason very compelling. I think they both fail upon closer inspection. The first reason (other YouTuber articles) is a logical fallacy. It is simply an Appeal to Bandwagon. I believe the second reason (person was interviewed) is also a logical fallacy since it argues the converse instead of the contrapositive. I believe it is true that some (many?) notable or important people are interviewed by a citable source, but the converse is not true. The converse is, if you are interviewed then you are a notable or important person. (The only truthful statement is the contrapositive - if you don't get interviewed then you are not a notable person. (Most of the time since some people may not give interviews)).

So, my request is, please form a Work Group to evaluate articles for people who use social media sites, like YouTube and TikTok, and either improve the article or delete the article as required. In the hierarchy shown in section 3.3, I believe the organization would look like:

• Work groups
  • Arts and entertainment
    • Actors and Filmmakers
    • Musicians
    • Social media

Awards/accolades received during one's career

I wanted to know what is the preferred method for mentioning such things in BLPs for CEO's/music producers. On this page there is an existing section for awards the individual has rec'd for his work as a music producer/songwriter. But he's also placed on various Billboard/Forbes/Variety rankings for his achievements as a businessman. While a few of these have been mentioned in the prose of the Career section, there are still quite a few not yet included, so I'd like some advice on the best way to do this. Do I create a "Recognition" section like on the Jeff Bezos article and list them all out there? Or should the "Awards" section be renamed (idk to what tho), and the listicle placements inserted there? Robert Roberts (author) at FAC in need of reviews

Hi all, a few weeks ago I nominated Robert Roberts (author) at WP:FAC and unfortunately I've yet to have any reviews, so the nomination will be archived soon if that doesn't change soon. Roberts led an interesting life; alongside teaching illiterate adults, championing Esperanto, opposing Fascism, working on a farm and writing for the BBC, he is chiefly noted for his autobiographical/historical accounts of growing up in a working-class neighbourhood in Edwardian England. Oliver Rood

The article suggests that he was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at Gettysburg while a member of the 20th Indiana Infantry Regiment. Pv.t Rood was actually a member of the 14th Indiana at Gettysburg. He was with his regiment in a fight on the night of July 2, 1863 that resulted in Confederates being driven from East Cemetery Hill. Private Rood captured the flag of the 21st NC Regiment, although some suggest that he actually found it on the field the next morning. He joined the 20th Indiana Infantry Regiment when his enlistment in the 14th expired. That was in the fall of 1864. Thus, when his medal was issued on December 1, 1864, he was a member of the 20th Indiana, but the action for which the medal was awarded was at a time when he was a member of the 14th Indiana. This is fairly common knowledge among the Licensed Battlefield Guides at Gettysburg. I'm sorry that I do not have a more specific source.

Michael Aldred source for death

Hi all. I am currently working on expanding Deaths in 1995 by adding and sourcing all articles in Category:1995 deaths. I can't find a source that verifies his date of death on 15 April 1995. Moreover, the claims about the nature of his death are sensitive, and we really should have a source for that. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. My ProQuest search and google books search mostly came up with sources on an ice skater of the same name. Please ping me if you find anything useful; this page is not on my watchlist. Proposed deletion of Donna Amenta

The article Donna Amenta has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Seems to be a rather unremarkable scientist where the wiki page has been in need of citations for 8 years. As the one source provided on this page (which has been the only source since it's inception) is a broken link, this page defacto unsourced. I was unable to find anything meaningful about her through searching methods that could even come close to satisfying notability guidelines. There's also a list of books on the side of the page that she seems to not have written and I am not sure why they are there as they don't even seem science related? Of what I did find, she has an h-score of 5, which is quite terrible, and fails blatently at all WP:PROF guidelines, as well as WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Kingsif, I agree and was using a summary style. Before another editor claimed that we, as editors, cannot summarize sources lest we misrepresent them (and their context) in a BLP. I will be glad if you take some interest and help clean the article. TrangaBellam (talk) 06:19, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Is the other editor claiming a SYNTH issues (generally seen as a non-issue with reviews) or just doesn't realize that cherrypicking and framing quotations can be just as misrepresentative if someone so chooses to do that.
