Band WikiProjects as task forces/work groups?

There seems to be quite a few WikiProjects cropping out related to one band; would these function better as task forces? (i.e. subprojects of this WikiProject) For example, The Beatles WikiProject has ratings for more specific areas, such as the band members etc. What do you think? CloudNine 16:44, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

It depends. Obviously some people are really into certain bands, and they might be able to get enough people together to form an efficient subproject. I myself find it hard to commit to something like that; I like The Smashing Pumpkins as a band, but I've found it a bit of a chore trying to muster the enthusiasm to fix up the Billy Corgan page. Glancing at the Beatles Wikiproject I must admit I had trouble finding exactly what you were referring to in regards to task forces. Could ou tell us more about what you have in mind? I'd be happy to convert Wikipedia:WikiProject Pixies to a task force - it really needs more editors :) The Biography WikiProject has task forces in the way I was referring to. Tapeop magazine

Hey just wanted to give you all a heads up, particularly if your interested in recording and production. I'll refrain from linking it from here, so google "tape op magazine" if you get a chance. It a free (in the US) bi-monthly magazine focused on DIY recording, and well respected in the recording community. With DIY being the focus there are often interviews with alternative and indie rock artists, engineers and producers. Personally I feel it has good source potential. There's a book in the works with some of the best article from the back issues as well. maxcap 17:42, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm currently looking for professional reviews of the Pixies' 2004 song "Bam Thwok" (NME, Q et al. would be nice), but I don't have access to any 2004 magazines. I found this article on Rolling Stone that has an expanded Kim Deal quote about the lyrics (similiar to but longer than what's cited from the book used in the article). As an aside, after searching through them right now, the EW archives do look pretty good. They go all the way back to 1990, so there's lots of research material there. I just read about the 1990 Grammys and this new thing called "alternative rock" that was breaking through at the time (Of course this is a major mainstream US publication, so the alternative acts that get mentioned the most pre-Nirvana are R.E.M., The Cure, and Morrissey. There are reviews for Bossanova and Trompe le Monde, though). WesleyDodds 13:24, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Indeed, they're a good read; it'll be useful in the future. Ceoil has noted that the current "critical" reactions in the article are user-submitted reviews and fan blogs; I'll have to find some professional reviews or delete the critical reaction paragraph altogether, which would be a shame. I'd be up for that. I've been considering making a guideline for referencing, to help illustrate how one can gather information on music publication websites and even mainstream news sites. Pick a GA project!

This is kind of a fun idea.

Currently my main projects are improving Nevermind and The Cure as well as prepping "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for a FA nomination. However, I do want to work on other articles on a consistent, involved basis, and I've arrived at two song articles I want to get to GA status within a month. Thing is, I only want to focus on one. So which article do you all think I should work on: "Just Like Heaven" or "Lovesong"? In case you've never heard either song, here's the former and here's the latter. Butthole Surfers at FAC

Hey everyone, Butthole Surfers is currently at Featured Article Candidates (listed here). Contributions and comments are welcome. I'll do some work on it, particularly since I own Our Band Could Be Your Life and am relatively unaccustomed with this week's collaboration Radiohead (a friend told me I'm the only person he knows who didn't have a Radiohead phase in high school). Still, Radiohead needs contributions to tweak the article for FA status (it's very close), particularly since according to that article's talk page none of the dozen print sources listed in the "Further reading" section are worth citing from (uh, seriously?). Yeah. Unfortunately there's been a general slowdown at GAC, PR, and FAC recently. Things seem to be starting to pick up, but all those processes need more reviewers right now, so contributions are encouraged. It's pretty cool that we've got more FAs this month than in the last two years combined. Since we're kind of on a roll, I'd like people to say what articles they'll be working on in the near future in the hopes of attaining FA status, or list which ones they think are close. I'll be working primarily on The Cure, which I hope to have at FA status by the summer; I'd like to see a FA-level British band article, particularly one from the 1980s, for our project. I'll also be tweaking Nevermind as I go along; the main issue here is just getting all my reference material in order. If it's anything like my experience with "Smells Like Teen Spirit", if I or anyone else sits down for a couple of days of intense work, it can reach GA status awfully quick. As for pages I don't really edit myself, Radiohead and Butthole Surfers need some work, but I think we can get them there. WesleyDodds 08:48, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

"Monkey Gone to Heaven" (which will be my last Pixies FA or GA for a while), and probably copyediting Radiohead. I'd also like to see all of Nirvana's releases up to FA status (including Incesticide perhaps). Hüsker Dü

I've been reading through the Hüsker Dü articles on Wikipedia, and have noticed a total lack of written or web sources referenced. I'd like to try my hand at improving some of the articles - could any recommend good written sources focusing on the band? A quick search doesn't really turn up a lot, apart from Our Band Could Be.... CloudNine 18:43, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Our Band Could Be Your Life should be an adequate primary source of material (A large part of the reason I bought the book was because it covered Husker Du). There's some fansites out there that have magazine scans from the 1980s; I'm not on my computer right now, but when I get home I'll post one of the sitelinks. WesleyDodds 22:26, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

If I remember correctly, they're featured in Simon Reynold's Rip It Up and Start Again, but not in depth. Also, an Amazon search on them brings up American Hardcore: A Tribal History, which, if it's worth its salt, should focus on them pretty heavily. Sven loreburg 17:42, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

The British version of Rip It Up and Start Again has a chapter on American hardcore/alternative bands, including Husker Du. However, the American version has had this section removed, and Husker Du is only mentioned in passing in the Afterward in the context of the birth of alt-rock, probably because Reynolds realized they weren't part of the post-punk movement he was focusing on. Ever since I saw you working on that I've had a silly, fun idea that each month the newsletter should also feature a random quote from an alt-rock musician. Project coverage

Any sort of magazine would be tricky, since often by their nature they cover topics outside of alternative rock. At least with a music festival like Lollapalooza we can say it comes under the scope of the porject since it has been devoted primairly to alt-rock and was instrumental in its overall history. Genre edit-warring

After witnessing a number of edit-wars over assigning genres to bands (e.g. Queens of the Stone Age and Rage Against the Machine), I'm looking for a reliable npov means of ascertaining band genres. Are there any guidelines/sources out there?–Skomorokh 00:39, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

All Music Guide is your default choice. They are occasionally wrong, though, so consult a variety of reputable sources that include articles that explicitly discuss a band's genre as well as music encyclopedias. Do not rely on comments by reviewers; this has become an issue on Red Hot Chili Peppers. Do not rely on things like Last.fm where users can add any tag they want to a band. If edit-warring over genres becomes a huge problem, I advise simply listing the broadest genre, such as alternative rock or simply even rock music. WesleyDodds 00:59, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

"Alternative rock"

I listen to a wide variety of music from different eras and genres, ranging from the 1950s to the 2000s, and I like a lot of what might be termed "alternative rock". The problem I have with this WikiProject is the definition of "alternative rock", and the perceived implication that alternative rock is better than other types of rock, especially the rock music that appeared before the punk movement, a lot of which I like.-h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 19:22, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

I'm considering starting a new WikiProject about bands and artists I like, possibly an 'avantgarde rock music WikiProject', including avantgarde, experimental, free improvising, progressive, post-rock, krautrock, electronic, jazz fusion and classically influenced rock bands. The bands and artists I would hope to include would be quite diverse. Obviously there are alternative rock, jazz and electronic music WikiProjects already, though, so I'm not sure that the broad and possibly vague focus of what I would like to create would be compatible with the WikiProject guidelines. Band biographies

I'll be able to go to the book store either tomorrow or Wednesday, or both if need be. I know for sure (unless they don't have it) that I'll get Heavier than Heaven. I'd honestly recommend that you get whatever interests you. I know what band bios to try and avoid given your interests. Five Against One: The Story of Pearl Jam is apparently very biased and None Too Fragile: Pearl Jam & Eddie Vedder has a lot of information, but the author does not cite where it comes from; there's not even an index. The Smashing Pumpkins bio Tales of a Scorched Earth is, anecdotes about the band's early days excepted, pretty useless and pretty much amount to the author waxing poetically for pages about how great the band is. Hmm, actually there's a book of Rolling Stone articles about Kurt Cobain that looks invaluable; it's at my local Borders, but I'm not that particularly interested in buying it given how much I've already read about Nirvana in my life. Slept under a bridge, stomach pains, sounds like a Motley Crue record, yadda yadda; it's almost second nature to me at this point. If you're interested in working on any alternative group articles from the 1980s, get Our Band Could Be Your Life (Interesting tidbit: one of the chapters in that book mentions a show one of the bands did in the town I live in now. Azerrad got the venue address wrong, though.). If you want to learn about British alternative rock, check out John Harris' Britpop!: Cool Britannia and The Spectacular Demise of English Rock. It of course focuses on Britpop and the 1990s, but there's a lot of space given to set-up during the 1980s. WesleyDodds 09:16, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

The selection of the books is based on whatever potential authors pitch to the company during their open submissions process. Meaning, I was considering pitching New Day Rising but I wasn't sure how many people would buy it, so I chose something else. "How Soon is Now?" talk page

I was scrolling through our importance categories to rate articles and I discovered that the talk page of "How Soon Is Now?" is currently located at . . . er, Talk:The Chamed Theme Song. I got the album, Dookie, to read GA status in a day after I re wrote the entire thing, but now I need some major help from anyone willing to help. Early punk bands

Do first generation punk bands like the Clash, Ramones and Sexpistols come under Alt music project? Granted that alt rock was an 80s underground movement, but then we also list almost every punk band of today.Tommy Stardust 06:43, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Nope. They fall under the scope of Wikipedia:WikiProject Punk music. That also covers post-punk, New Wave, and modern punk bands. Punk bands only come under our scope if they cross over into the alt-rock genre (notable examples include Siouxsie & the Banshees, Husker Du, and Green Day). WesleyDodds 07:06, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Prose review and newsletter

I've created a prose review page to allow those articles (especially featured article candidates) in need of a copyedit to attract copyeditors. It may help improve the quality of prose (for example, Sky Blue Sky failed recently due to prose concerns).
