"Long lead" listings

This is a slight follow up on Bencherlite's comment on the long lead items that fill the list, sometimes for months in advance, is there a way we can lock some of these down off this list, but so they appear as proposed? We have 5 of our 13 noms currently filled with proposed lists for September or later (up until April 2014), and it would be good to free up some space if we can shift them to a holding space. Any thoughts? - SchroCat (talk) 18:28, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

That's a good idea. Would you propose making a new page to hold future TFLs? That seems like it would be an efficient method that leaves the blurbs ready to use, and it would get lists like the April 2014 candidate off the main submissions page. Giants2008 (Talk) 20:10, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
Hi Giants2008, sorry for the delay, for some reason this dropped off my watchlist. I think we have two options here: firstly to just have a time limit on proposals (3 months?); and secondly to have a new page to hold those that have dates relevant dates suggested to them that are outside that three month limit. (The stutterers list is a good example of this: Neelix nominated it on 4 January, a month later I suggested 22 October. Under the proposed regime, we would then move the nom to the new holding page). Thought? - SchroCat (talk) 19:35, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
Sorry for this delay too. :-) Considering that we have several lists that could have been placed onto a holding page, like Deportation of Armenian intellectuals on 24 April 1915, I like this idea. It allows us to avoid forgetting lists with strong date relevance like this one, and the submissions page might flow better. Giants2008 (Talk) 02:20, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

TFL links to featured topics

Since July, any TFA that is part of a Featured topic has had a link to that featured topic in the blurb using {{TFATOPIC}}. The template supports links to two topics if appropriate. See Wikipedia:Featured topics on the Main Page for the list of times when it's been done so far (10 at the time of writing). There has not been any negative reaction to this. I have now added support for |topic1= and |topic2= to {{TFLcontent}} to enable the same thing to happen for TFLs - see Wikipedia:Today's featured list/September 26, 2014 for tomorrow's TFL as the first example. After doing this, I noticed that Neelix had suggested the same thing at this TFL nomination - great minds think alike, etc. BencherliteTalk 09:38, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

That all sounds good to me. Neelix (talk) 12:53, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

How should the links to the full article/list at the end of the Today's Featured Article/List sections be formatted?

You may like to know that a discussion has been started at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article on whether to remove the "..." at the end of (Full article...) in TFA blurbs. (Logic would suggest that any changes to TFA practice on this point ought to be matched at TFL for consistency of main-page presentation.) Please discuss there, not here, to avoid fragmenting the discussion. BencherliteTalk 20:53, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

400-series highways

I've just been informed that 400-series highways has been chosen to appear on the main page on September 19. As the primary editor, I'd like to request that this date be withheld in favour of a listing on July 1, 2017 - the 60th anniversary of the 400-series designation. TFL Dec 9 candidate

Hi, I'm posting with regards to the List of Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross recipients of the Waffen-SS as scheduled for Dec 9 as a TFL. I would suggest that a different list be picked instead as, due to recent changes in consensus regarding the notability of the German WWII Knight's Cross recipient subjects, certain articles that are linked from the list are being redirected to an alphabetic list for lack of stand-alone notability. Many articles that remain are problematic due to content and sourcing. I can provide more information if needed. K.e.coffman (talk) 06:33, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

After careful consideration, I don't believe that the issues raised are serious enough for the list to be pulled. If articles that the list links to have been redirected, then the links in the list can just be removed. I used a disambiguation link checker on the article and found one linked page that redirect to the list; I removed the link, and suggest that any links redirecting to other lists can be handled similarly through normal editing. As for any issues with linked articles, those are not relevant to the assessed quality of this list; if the FL criteria (or the FA criteria, for that matter) had requirements that all pages linked in an article be in decent condition, then we would almost never get anything promoted. Quick Question about Submissions

Hello, I have a quick question about the submission process. I would like to nominate the FL for Shannen Doherty filmography to appear on the main page sometime around Shannen Doherty's birthday on April 12. I was wondering if I could submit it a potential candidate for today's featured list that far in advance or if it would better to wait? I apologize for there is an obvious answer and thank you in advance. Aoba47 (talk) 03:21, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

By all means, go ahead and make an entry at WP:TFLS. I try to schedule lists several weeks before they are to appear on TFL, to give contributors adequate notice and provide time for late scheduling changes. By listing it at TFLS now, you're giving interested editors about a month to review things, which is certainly not too long in my opinion; there's also plenty of room for more nominations (five are listed now, with a maximum of 15 allowed). It looks like the closest available dates near her birthday are April 10 and April 14. Giants2008 (Talk) 00:25, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your response! I just wanted to make sure before putting anything up. I would be very happy with either one of those dates. I am going to construct the listing for it and post it sometime by the end of today. Aoba47 (talk) 15:00, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Suggestion on changing Ayrton Senna listing from 8 May to 1 May

Hello all. Giants2008 informed me that List of Formula One Grand Prix wins by Ayrton Senna is scheduled to appear on 8 May on the Main Page. I was wondering whether we could change the date from 8 May to 1 May when Senna passed away. Pinging Harrias, the main contributor to the list, and The Rambling Man, who has helped me considerably in another featured list I authored. Thanks. Lourdes 07:30, 22 April 2017 (UTC)

I'm pretty ambivalent on this. If there's nothing else with date relevance for 1 May, then it would seem a more suitable date, but I don't think date relevance is so important for TFL as TFA. Harrias talk 09:42, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
The list currently in the May 1 slot (Family Guy (season 4)) was scheduled after a specific request for that date on WP:TFLS. I'm reluctant to change it now, although I don't know enough about Family Guy to say how relevant that date is for the show. Giants2008 (Talk) 21:14, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
I would suggest that the Senna link to that date is far more significant than a series of Family Guy. I have few memories of things that make me sit up and say "yes, I remember where I was when that happened", but most recently it was Trump being elected, Brexit, 9/11, Princess Diana dying and Senna. I watched that GP, watched the fallout, thought to myself as Senna powered off that curve, "game over". Far more emotive and notable (for me) than a particular series of Family Guy. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:19, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
It looks like the Family Guy season ended on May 21, 2006, and that day is a Friday this year. 1989, would you have any issue if I moved that list to the 21st so that the Senna list can appear on the 1st? Apparently, I've accidentally stumbled upon a list with very strong relevance for that day, and if this thread is any indication, readers will be highly interested in the Senna list. Giants2008 (Talk) 02:10, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
No. -- 1989 02:16, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
Thank you 1989, Giants2008, The Rambling Man, Harrias for considering this request. Lourdes 08:05, 23 April 2017 (UTC)
Lourdes and 1989, I've gone ahead and changed the appearance dates. I must apologize because I apparently read April's days of the week in my last comment here; May 21 won't have a TFL, but the 22nd will, so I moved the Family Guy list there. Hope this is okay. April 7th, 2017

A few of use have been working on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for the last number of years. Have it nominated for FL here. Hope is that if we can get it to FL status to have it on the main page for World Health Day on April 7th, 2017. We have solved the copyright issues by having the WHO agree to release the list under a CC BY SA 3.0 license. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 11:43, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Sounds like a great plan. Since April 7 is a Friday, a TFL appearance on that date is possible if the list is promoted within the next couple of months; I'll leave a spot open for it as long as I can. If I get some free time, I'll try to offer a review in the near-future, although I can't promise anything due to a busy real-life work schedule. Giants2008 (Talk) 00:18, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Every day has a featured list

There are nearly 3000 featured list haven't been on Main Page. So we should have 1 featured list in all days in week. 2001:EE0:4141:268D:CCBF:B0E2:586B:F2C8 (talk) 00:13, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

There have been occasional posts in various places supporting the idea of putting TFL on the Main Page on additional days. I've argued in the past that we have a surplus of lists in certain topics and a lack of FLs in others, which leads to the risk that we would have to feature sports/pop culture lists even more often than we currently do (as those are the categories where most of our FLs come from), leading to negative reader feedback. On the positive side, we did promote a good number of lists in the first quarter of the year, as this page shows, with some nice variety in what passed through the FLC process. If we were to request expansion of TFL, those are the kinds of numbers we need to allow for a diverse range of list subjects. Unfortunately, the past few months haven't been quite as strong. I received a message on my talk page about this situation and responded both there and at WP:ERRORS. As I said at WP:ERRORS, I'll monitor the discussion for the next few hours, the period during which I can still edit the blurb. I'd suggest that others leave comments at the errors page, as TFA is also impacted in this case and Main Page talk is more visible than this page anyway. Per Wehwalt's comment in that discussion, here's the list of September TFAs. Please let us know if any of these conflict with TFL. I'm posting the list because I'm usually the one to generate the list on-wiki, not because I have anything to do with scheduling.

Here's the October list:

  • I remember that there was once a user page that showed the next month's worth of blurbs that were about to appear on TFA, TFL, and TFP, but I can't find it now and am not sure it still exists. It was a useful tool, but in its absence I'll try to have a look every once in a while to avoid having a repeat of the Amy Adams situation. There don't appear to be any same-day conflicts for the rest of October. I did schedule a baseball-related list for October 22, but since there's a six-day gap and the list is thematically distinct from the article set to run on the 28th, I'm not too concerned about it. TFL for July 21

I know it looks premature, but once I finish up List of people who have walked on the Moon, submit it as a FLC, and then hopefully becomes FL...would it be a big deal to run it on July 21? It is a Sunday, which is not a normal day TFL runs, but it is the 50th anniversary of when we landed humans on the Moon for the first time. Hawkeye7 and I made Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11 FAs, with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins hopefully joining soon. I finally have time to work on the list, so presuming it is ready in time, would it be possible to run on July 21 of this year (it would join Armstrong's TFA)? We can delay the discussion until after it (hopefully) becomes a FL, just wanted to float the idea early. Kees08 (Talk) 05:52, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

I don't understand why this list exists; it is redundant to List of Apollo astronauts (and Apollo program), and any expansion can certainly still be added to that page. I would oppose this nomination at FLC under criterion 3b. Reywas92Talk 19:05, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
I plan to change the section in List of Apollo astronauts to a summary of List of people who have walked on the Moon. It is redundant because that is where the list originally came from. I always thought it was weird that the list was embedded in a section for Apollo astronauts. I am fine with you opposing it at its eventual nomination, this was more of a question on the possibility of featuring it on July 21, if it becomes a FL, so I can focus my time prior to the anniversary accordingly. Kees08 (Talk) 03:58, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
That makes no sense. The moonwalkers are all Apollo astronauts, so of course they'd be included on that list, what makes it weird? So the List of Apollo astronauts will only include those who didn't walk on the moon, with those twelve in a separate article? Or it'll still be redundant with an unnecessary split? Until someone in a future mission walks on the moon again, there's no purpose for that and I'm sure others would not see the need for it either. The same expansions such as images and other personal details could certainly be added to the Apollo list for the non-landers too, and that's a section I could contribute to as well. Reywas92Talk 04:47, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
It seemed like a logical split to me. I could also put the List of Apollo astronauts into List of astronauts by name, but breaking it out into Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo is a logical break, so they each have their own list. I find myself linking to List_of_Apollo_astronauts#Apollo_astronauts_who_walked_on_the_Moon far more than I need to link to List_of_Apollo_astronauts, and since it can easily be a standalone list, it seemed like a good break. Anyways, this is a bit off-topic; I would be happy to discuss further on the talk page of either article if you would like. Kees08 (Talk) 05:50, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
Sure, I'm looking forward to how these would turn out regardless, seeing your good work on the astronauts' articles. Reywas92Talk 06:21, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

For alternative Main Pages

The "requests" page

I stumbled upon this page and was wondering if it still has any purpose. It says that it's a "proposed" process, but the last edit to the page was in 2013. If it's no longer relevant, I think it should be redirected to the actual submissions page and its subpages redirected or deleted as appropriate. I note also that this was brought up five years ago above, but to no avail. RAVENPVFF | talk ~ 14:30, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

Having just come back from a long period in which I wasn't too active, I just saw that you did redirect the page. Thanks for doing that. The old requests page hadn't been used in years, and the established submissions page is where we should be directing new blurb proposals. Giants2008 (Talk) 00:06, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Workshopping a proposal for a new user group

Valereee and I have been working on a proposal to form a new usergroup whose members would be able to edit content on the main page or its fully protected subsidiaries. Since it directly affects this project, and is based in part on the shortage of administrators working here, we would like to invite feedback on the proposal at User talk:Vanamonde93/Main page editor‎. The proposal itself is at User:Vanamonde93/Main page editor‎. In particular, we would like to hear it if you are opposed to the whole thing on principle, because in that case we would rather spend our time promoting queues than in organizing a large-scale RfC. List of Holocaust transports from Slovakia

@Giants2008: I was hoping to have this list appear with The Holocaust in Slovakia which is at FAC. Furthermore, I was hoping to run both of them on 9 September, which is when this event is commemmorated in Slovakia. What do you think about that? buidhe 22:50, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

@Buidhe: Unfortunately it won't be possible for us to run the list on that date, since September 9 is a Wednesday and TFL only appears on Mondays and Fridays. Proposed change to format of featured topics

Currently, TFA and TFL present featured topics in different ways – some months ago, TFA was changed to incorporate featured topics into the bracketed phrase at the end of the blurb, while TFL still maintains the old practice of a separate line underneath the blurb. To bring this in line with TFA, I've created {{TFLfull}}, which uses the existing structure of {{TFLcontent}} to produce the proper text to go at the end of the blurb, providing support for up to two featured topics and custom link text if necessary; you can check the new template's documentation to get an idea of how it works and take a look at the testcases page to see the impact of this change. I've made an edit request at the {{TFLcontent}} talk page to implement it. Please let me know if you have any concerns or suggestions. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 03:06, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

The Blurb of a Thousand Characters...

I'm not very experienced with Lists and such but was thinking of submitting List of racing cyclists and pacemakers with a cycling-related death for a TFL slot. Short of counting each individual letter/number is there a Wiki-tool that can count the characters in a blurb? I am working on a possible blurb for the possible TFL submission and have tried to count the characters a couple of times but keep on losing count... TFL March 6th scheduling for List of Symphyotrichum species

@Giants2008: Would it be possible to reschedule the TFL of List of Symphyotrichum species from March 6th to late August or early September? I ask because nearly all species in this genus bloom in North American late summer and autumn (August through November, depending on location and weather). – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 22:33, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

@Eewilson: No problem. Sorry I haven't been able to respond here or on my talk page (things have gotten crazy for me in real life lately), but I'll pick another list for the March 6 spot next time I get a chance. Max submissions at WP:TFL/S

Currently, there are 15 listed submissions for TFL. The page says there should be no more than fifteen nominations listed here at any one time (emphasis included), so should we enforce this cap strictly? And if so, do we remove existing submissions or new ones as they appear? RunningTiger123 (talk) 01:53, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

I feel like the List of Coppa Italia finals should be removed from the submissions list because the nominator has not written a proper blurb if the list gets posted on the Main Page. Furthermore, the nominator has not proposed an alternative date for the list since he also suggested that List of Italy national football team hat-tricks be posted on May 15. He wants it on May 26, but having two football/soccer related lists close to one another seems a bit awkward. There should at least be some variety in lists per month.
Also, he nominated List of international goals scored by Haasan Maatouk for a Main Page appearance for January 27, but that date has passed. In addition, the blurb is written in two paragraphs unlike the normal standard one paragraph. I'd suggest that nomination be also removed until he revises the blurb or agrees on having the blurb modified by one of us experienced nominators.
Finally, Chompy Ace has been nominating lists to appear on the Main Page quite a lot. In fact, a few of them are for dates more than six months into the future (and one of them is for May 2024, or one full year). I feel like there should be a cap on the number of nominations per user AND that submissions for specific dates should be posted only for a six-month range. I had to post up a blurb for the 76th Academy Awards since I was afraid that Chompy Ace might nominate too many lists and I might miss the intended 20 year gap between ceremonies (i.e. The 76th ceremony being posted in relation to the 96th ceremony). That's just my two cents.
--Birdienest81talk 08:02, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
I think that proposing a time limit for submissions is reasonable – hopefully, limiting how far in advance submissions can be added would also limit how many a specific person adds? I'd also be curious to hear from Chompy Ace about their submissions. RunningTiger123 (talk) 03:23, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Agreed so it can be reduced to 2010s-esque process. Also, I have reduced to eleven submissions, including ones for two removed by me. Chompy Ace 08:43, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
