Wikipedia talk:Meetup/San Francisco/Wiknic/2011

  • If the greatest level of accessibility is wished for, we could specify and meet at one of many little lawn areas. It will likely be a popular day at the park, though, so if people want to shed the crowds, we could picnic inside a more private place such as the paid area of the San Francisco Botanical Garden. That particular suggestion would add the burden of $7 per adult, $5 per child or $15 per family. Binksternet (talk) 07:06, 15 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
    • fwiw, the Botanical Garden is free for San Francisco residents (show ID with an SF address or a SF utility bill or something similar with your name on it). That still doesn't help those who might want to commute in, but it's something. Zachlipton (talk) 00:11, 21 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

George Washington Grove edit

We seem to have a lot of interest -- which is fantastic! Also, apparently the Alice radio station is having some big event in the park that weekend, and has lots of spaces reserved. Because of all that, I want to be sure we have a real space reserved. So I grabbed George Washington Grove. This has one table and barbecue grill, and should accommodate as many as 40 people comfortably. The permit allows us to bring beer and wine. There are no bathrooms right on site, though -- so be prepared to track one down if you need it! -Pete (talk) 16:58, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Reddit global meetup in same park on same day edit

If you're keen on reddit, come by and say 'ello. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.139.75.240 (talk) 06:29, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Do you know what part of the park? -Pete (talk) 22:57, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Disappointed that I can't make it, but . . . edit

Despite being very disappointed that I can't make it since I'll be out of town, may I look ahead and say that this is such a great idea that: Let's do this on a regular -- or irregular -- basis!

Also, the venue could move around the Bay Area, such as to Palo Alto and Berkeley.Daqu (talk) 17:02, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Daqu-- the meetups have indeed been semi-irregular :) But you may be right, a picnic might be just the right balance between formal and informal, organized and disorganized, fun and fun. I'm definitely up for more of 'em, especially if it's as well attended as it's looking like it'll be! -Pete (talk) 17:11, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Arrgghh: who scheduled this on the same day as the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup final? Tapered (talk) 03:07, 25 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sunscreen in San Francisco? edit

Hardly necessary! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.102.9.227 (talk) 23:31, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Always needed! It's a common misconception that in cloudy or foggy days/climates that sunscreen is not needed. Fact is UV rays (I forgot UV A or UV B) penetrate cloud cover and can cause skin cancer. So you've been warned! Mistakefinder (talk) 23:39, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Bay area import edit

Hello,

I'm coming in on the ferry from Valleghetto across the bay. Can you advise me on public transit from the Ferry Building to the picnic?

Georgejdorner (talk) 17:42, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

That's a really nice ferry ride -- just did it myself a few weeks ago! The easiest (off the top of my head) would be this:
  • Get off the ferry at the Ferry Building (NOT the other SF stop, which is Pier 39)
  • Walk a couple blocks to Embarcadero Station
  • Enter the MUNI station (same entrance as BART from the street, but different entrance once you get downstairs)
  • take the outbound N train. It will come out from underground, then briefly go back into a tunnel, and then come aboveground again for good. Get off about 24th St. and walk to George Washington Grove.
Hope that's enough detail; maybe consult Google Maps and/or 511.org too, and let me know if you need more info! -Pete (talk) 22:56, 21 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Restrooms edit

So, there do seem to be a couple (on the left/west), not at the grove but within walking distance. Ijon (talk) 22:00, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

RSVP? edit

Do we need to RSVP? To whom do we RSVP?

In case you haven't figured it out -- just sign your name on the main page for the event! No worries if you didn't RSVP though. Just be sure to bring your own food and drink-- the space will accommodate plenty of folks :) -Pete (talk) 02:27, 25 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
