Propose a meetup!
If you'd like to coordinate with other Wikipedians to plan an event:
  • This talk page may be useful; but its reach is limited.
  • The Wikimedia-SF email list is a useful resource (see the main page for subscription info)
  • Our planning page for the monthly Bay Area WikiSalons lives on Meta Wiki; feel free to engage there to plan future WikiSalons.
  • Two groups on Meetup.com can be a useful resource for planning events organically: Bay Area Wikipedians and Wikimedia Tech.
  • Join us at a WikiSalon to meet others who might be interested in planning events.

Wiki Loves Pride edit

Are there any SF residents interested in participating in Wiki Loves Pride 2014, a multi-national effort to improve coverage of LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects? Perhaps an edit-a-thon or a photography project? Please visit the project page for details or let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! --Another Believer (Talk) 17:36, 13 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Great American Wiknic 2015 - San Francisco edit

I'd like to invite you good folks to add a San Francisco / Bay Area event for the Great American Wiknic :) This year we're aiming to coalesce nationally around July 5 or 25, but any date that is convenient to your local community works as well. And don't be shy about putting something preliminary on the national Wiknic page, it all helps!--Pharos (talk) 04:06, 2 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Meet the stewards edit

Hi all, a large group of Wikimedia stewards will be visiting San Francisco (Wikimedia offices) around 23-24 October 2015. Would anyone be interested in a meeting? Let me know, Taketa (talk) 06:34, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Definitely. Keep me posted. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:41, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes! And I'd be very happy to facilitate an editathon that weekend if it would fit into the schedule. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:28, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
If I don't get a work assignment on those days I will want to stop by to say 'hi'. Binksternet (talk) 21:38, 18 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hey all, sorry for the late reply, but I did not get an itinerary until this week and am finally adjusting from jetlag. There are 14 stewards in town right now. If anyone wants to meet we have an open slot tomorrow from 13:30 until 17:00 to fill at the WMF office. Just let me know if you want to come by and we can meet at the foundation headquarters. Or we can meet for dinner or later in the evening somewhere in town and see who wants to join. The weekend will be difficult. Most are leaving again on Saturday. So let me know, here on this page, if you want to come by and at what time/place, and we can meet tomorrow. One person or a group, all is fine. In case it is needed, my email is Taketa wikipedia.be. All the best, Taketa (talk) 11:06, 22 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
My work schedule only allows me to join in dinner or drinks after 7 pm on Friday. Binksternet (talk) 18:35, 22 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Binksternet:,@Cullen328:,@Rosiestep: I posted on the SF list about where we were meeting but in case you hadn't seen it we're meeting at one of the bars across the street at 5pm and hope some can join! ( it's at [johncolins.com John Collins] basically right across the street and a couple doors down the side street from the office). If anyone wants me to keep them up to date if we move to dinner before they can get there feel free to email me, I'll make sure to do it!. Jalexander--WMF 07:55, 23 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
I have dinner plans after work in the Napa Valley. Something about my wife, a grilled steak and a bottle of Merlot. Interstate 80 is a torture chamber late on Fridays. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 08:02, 23 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
I'm in Nevada today. Sorry I can't make it. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:03, 23 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Events with a wiki component edit

Thank you Tantek for recently adding the Homebrew Website Meetup to this page. I'm glad to know about the group, and hope to check it out some time. Do you think it might fit better under the "See also" heading? It seems to me a little tangential, in the sense that (if I understand correctly) it wouldn't be described as primarily a "wiki meetup." I wouldn't say this is a big issue, and if others disagree I can let it go; but since we're currently in the process of revamping the SF pages a bit, I'm thinking about precedents and what the page might look like if other indirectly-related groups start putting their events in the main list. -Pete (talk) 15:30, 27 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Totally ok with either categorization. Homebrew Website Club is not *primarily* a wiki meetup per se, however, there's usually a lot of wiki editing going on during the first half "quiet writing hour" in practice which is why I thought it might be of interest. Also, Homebrew Website Club, and IndieWebCamp as a whole is a wiki-centric community (our MediaWiki instance is our primary source of and for everything we do, e.g. we have no mailing list). Those are some specifics, hope that helps with figuring out precedents and categorizations. Also ok with dropping if you deem it not similar/related enough. Thanks for your consideration! - Tantek (talk) 16:45, 27 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Peteforsyth, Tantek, I split it out into another section and provided some extra information to help people understand why. Given that there aren't many events, I'm not too worried about crowding the page right now. Over time we can figure that out if it ever comes a problem. Cross-pollinating with allied organizations seems like it's just a good thing to me. Ben Creasy (talk) 06:10, 28 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wiknic - July 2016 edit

I'd like to invite folks to add preliminary info for Minnesota's event this year at Wikipedia:Wiknic.--Pharos (talk) 18:41, 7 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Offer of scholarship for your group's representative to attend WikiConference edit

I am writing to invite the Bay Area WikiSalon team to WikiConference North America to be held in San Diego Friday to Monday 7-10 October. Here are further details:

  • We are accepting submissions until 31 August.
  • We are accepting scholarship applications 9 August - 23 August. About 40 scholarships are available only for people in Canada, the US, and Mexico. Last year about 200 people applied for scholarships.
  • More volunteers are needed. In the usual wiki-way, anyone may comment on program submissions. At the conference in person, all conference organizers will be volunteers. All conference attendees are encouraged check in with conference organizers about volunteering for the task queue even for an hour. Anyone interested may contact Flonight and Rosiestep to offer volunteer support.
  • Major sponsorship for the conference comes from the San Diego Public Library who are providing the venue and a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation.
  • This is the third year of this conference, with WikiConference USA being in New York in 2014 and in Washington DC in 2015. Check the schedules of those for examples of what kinds of programming will be offered this year.

Discussion about the conference on-wiki could happen at meta:WikiConference North America.

This year, conference organizers have been able to reserve one scholarship to attend for someone in your organization. I encourage participants in your organization to start a conversation among yourselves about who is available and interested to attend the conference as a representative of your collective interests. If you can identify someone among yourselves to accept this travel scholarship, then please tell me of your choice. The person who wishes to receive a scholarship in this scheme should still complete the scholarship application as soon as possible and before 23 August. After the form is completed and you notify me, then I will note your group's decision for that person. Thanks for your consideration. Write me with any questions.--Pharos (talk) 18:10, 18 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion for October salon edit

Hi, I mentioned this to Checkingfax already but thought I'd post it here too. If there aren't already speakers scheduled for this month's Bay Area WikiSalon (which I assume/hope is happening on October 26?), I thought it would be fun to have a panel of people who attended WikiConference North America speaking about our experiences there. Confused about July edit

Very confused about July. Quoting the invite on my talk page:

  • We are taking July off!
  • ...present them at our July 26 WikiSalon.

So, which is it? There is, or there isn't a WikiSalon in July? Mathglot (talk) 05:17, 28 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Mathglot. That looks like a typo. We took June off, then decided to take July off (yesterday). August is bunchy with Wikiconference North America and Wikimania, so we decided to take August off too, and will rconvene the last Wednesday in September. Part of this is that we want to automate and streamline the announcement process for WikiSalon. We also need some help lining up speakers. Pinging Ben Creasy and SLaporte. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 14:43, 27 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Still Alive/ edit

Is this effort still alive?

iFaqeer (talk to or email me) 02:25, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@IFaqeer: There are definitely still Wikipedians in the Bay Area who are up for attending and occasionally organizing events! I ran a couple of online ones this year, and I've heard some interest in an outdoor photo-walk type of meetup, but I don't have current plans to organize one. South Bay Map Night edit

Over the years, WikiSalon folks have invited me to come and present about OpenStreetMap in San Francisco, though regrettably I've never been able to make the trek up there. I'd like to return the favor and extend a belated reverse invitation: OpenStreetMap's South Bay volunteer community meets online every other week as part of Code for San José (the local Code for America affiliate). We'd love for Wikipedians from anywhere in the Bay Area to attend and share your perspective on documenting the area. There's bound to be a lot in common with what we're doing in OSM, even if it is a different medium, such as a common need to build out Wikidata's coverage of the area. We'd also be interested in organizing a joint event at some point if there's interest. Minh Nguyễn 💬 17:21, 10 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
