Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga/Topic workshop

This is the topic workshop of WikiProject Anime and manga. This area of the project concentrates on creating a centralized place to collaborate on the creation and development of anime and manga good and featured topics.

Overview of topics edit

The purpose of the featured topic process is to highlight some of the most distinguished parts of Wikipedia in terms of article quality. This section will discuss how to form a featured topic, as well as the nuances of the process.

Selecting a topic edit

Ensure that the topics you select have a clear scope. If you list items of a potential topic and cannot see the logical structure of a topic, then it is likely not viable. Topics tend to form naturally; attempting to "force" a topic by linking unrelated articles or by creating trivial articles generally does not work.

From the featured topic criteria, all topics must have at least three items, have a clear defined topical scope, are linked together, and have no major gap in the topic. For the purposes of anime and manga articles, the most visible topics that can be formed are those of major series or franchises. Most series articles (for instance, Bleach (manga) or D.Gray-man) have lists that branch off from the main article; these include but are not limited to chapter lists (List of Naruto chapters (Part I) or List of Claymore chapters), episode lists (List of Black Lagoon episodes or List of Trinity Blood episodes), and character lists (List of Naruto characters or List of Tokyo Mew Mew characters). In the case of a series that contains no articles past the primary series article, a chapter list, an episode list, and a character list, these articles would form a complete topic that satisfies the featured topic criteria. Other types of articles that are occasionally present in franchises that would be needed to be included in such a topic are films based on the series (Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa or Bleach: Memories of Nobody), album or soundtrack lists (List of Haruhi Suzumiya albums or List of Clannad soundtracks), video game lists (List of Bleach video games), light novel lists (List of Fullmetal Alchemist light novels or List of Haruhi Suzumiya light novels), or original video animations (Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal).

Franchises of greater size and scope often have more articles under their scope, leading to the potential for "subtopics" within the greater franchise. Two current featured topics within WikiProject Anime and manga follow this pattern: Naruto manga chapters and Seasons of YuYu Hakusho. The former relies upon a split between the chapters of the Naruto manga, and the latter on the multiple seasons of the YuYu Hakusho anime. An anime having multiple seasons is generally more common than the manga being long enough and having a visible divide that allows for a viable topic to be formed. Aside from chapter and episode lists, large franchises tend to have notable individual character articles that allows for a topic to be formed around the characters of the franchise. Other possible topics may exist within the scope of the WikiProject, but ensure that the topical scope is clear and that it meets with all the criteria.

Main article edit

The main article of a topic must be one that is clearly the parent article or list for the other items of the topic, and defines the scope of the topic. The main article of a series is an appropriate article for other items in a franchise, a primary episode list (List of YuYu Hakusho episodes) for the individual season episode lists (List of YuYu Hakusho episodes (season 1), List of YuYu Hakusho episodes (season 2), etc.), and so on and such forth. The main article of an topic also must demonstrate clear linkage to the other items of the topic. This can be done through {{main}}, {{see also}} or similar links in individual sections of the article or by using a template. The main article can be an article or a list depending on the scope of the topic; topics on series tend to use the main article of a series and "subtopics" tend to have lists as their main article, but both of these cases may change depending on each individual topic.

Quality bar edit

With the advent of good topics, creating a topic is much easier notion than the originally daunting task of having to meet the quality bar for a featured topic.

For all topics, good topics and featured topics alike, all of the articles in the topic must be at least good articles and all lists must be featured lists. This requirement is the minimum bar for a good topic. For a featured topic, the amount of featured content within the topic (both featured articles and featured lists are considered featured content) must constitute at least twenty-five percent of the topic, with a minimum of two items of featured content. This figure is rounded up; for instance, if the topic had 10 items, 3 items would need to be featured (10/4 = 2.5 --> 3) or if the topic had 15 items, 4 items would need to be featured (15/4 = 3.75 --> 4). In the grand majority of topics formed under the scope of WikiProject Anime and manga, a good portion of this quota will be met through featured lists due to the prevalence of chapter, episode, and character lists.

The featured topic criteria accounts for cases in which certain articles or lists cannot pass the good article nominations or featured list candidates process due to inherent instability or limited subject matter. This process is known as "auditing". For instance, the episode list on an anime series that has not concluded cannot become a featured list because the list is inherently unstable. In these cases, the article or list can undergo a peer review in which the article is reviewed thoroughly. Failure to garner sufficient commentary for a peer review can be cited as grounds to fail a featured topic nomination, as the peer reviews of all "audited" items are reviewed in the topic's candidacy. For those who are attempting to audit an article through a peer review, it is recommended that they inform WikiProject Anime and manga, and contact a few peer review volunteers to acquire sufficient commentary. Also, all audited items in the topic do not count towards the total count of the topic; the topic must have at least three other articles or lists in the topic that are not audited.

Recommendations on collaboration edit

Once the scope and items of a topic have been identified, collaboration on the topic can then ensue. Given the large number of quality articles required for every individual topic, it is much easier for topics to be formed through collaboration by large numbers of editors. Separating the workload by assigning tasks to individual editors or groups of editors is a possible method, as is all collaborators working on the individual items of a topic one-by-one. As a courtesy to the other collaborators, it is recommended that the editor(s) working on individual items contact the other collaborators on a topic prior to any good article, featured list, or featured article candidacy. WikiProject Anime and manga currently has under its scope episode, chapter, and character lists of featured quality, as well as series and character articles of good quality. Using these articles and lists as models for the relevant articles in the topic is highly recommended. Also, when a topic is nominated, it is recommended to list the editors that have collaborated on the topic; it is always helpful to recognize editors for the work they have put forth on any individual topic. Lastly, creating a good or featured topic is among the most difficult tasks for a Wikipedia editor, and please do not be discouraged by the amount of work that is often needed to create these topics. Keep going forward and do not be afraid to ask for help from the WikiProject and your fellow project members.

Potential topics edit

When listing a topic, please use the {{topicnom}} template, and create a section for the collaborators on the topic and a section for discussion on the topic. Indicate whether the topic is a potential good topic or featured topic by adding (GT) or (FT) respectively to the title of the topic. If you wish to collaborate on a topic, please add # ~~~ under the "collaborators" section of a potential topic listed here. Please keep the topics up to date on the status of the articles. The following templates can be utilized:

The Naruto Uzumaki article has received some copy-edit by user Scalper and expansion of reception by Deerstop. I expanded a bit the lead. I guess it is nearer GA, isn't it?Tintor2 (talk) 15:58, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reception section needs work. General touches to the prose are still necessary throughout the text. I'll work on it when I get time. — sephiroth bcr (converse) 20:50, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • List of D.Gray-man episodes does indeed require a lot of help, but as the series is unfinished, it will simply be "audited" via a peer review right before the actual topic is nominated (as it cannot pass FLC due to inherent instability). sephiroth bcr (converse) 01:36, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Should not the episodes list be divided in seasons? Like Yuyu Hakusho, Bleach and others?Tintor2 (talk) 00:00, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • There needs to be an official division. I haven't found one for D.Gray-man. sephiroth bcr (converse) 00:02, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The dvds are divided in two series, the first 51 are known as 1st stage, while the next ones are 2nd stage. Does that count?Tintor2 (talk) 00:09, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Never mind the last one. You already have it done. Efficient, I must say. Anyway, is the main episode page now list class? Itzjustdrama? 02:13, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I the List of minor characters need to be redirected to main one or simply deleted.Tintor2 (talk) 15:45, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yeah, go ahead and redirect it. None of those characters would be included in the character list; ergo, there's no point in keeping the minor characters list. sephiroth bcr (converse) 21:08, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Update: The B-Class has been filled out (Thanks G.A.S). It passed all criteria except for B2 Coverage and Accuracy. Itzjustdrama? 20:56, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question. Should the season episode lists be included in the FT? ~Itzjustdrama C ? 18:11, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know too much about the featured topic, but since the seasons are sub-lists of the main one, its not necesary. The same would happen if we create a Allen Walker article (if notablity can be get), it wouldnt be part of the topic since its part of the character list.Tintor2 (talk) 18:27, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Precisely. If the main list is featured, there is no need for the season lists to be included as well. In fact, that's another potential featured topic (main list + two season lists). — sephiroth bcr (converse) 19:07, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense now. Thanks for the answers. ~Itzjustdrama C ? 20:57, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I thought that it'd be useful to note here, especially after my last reply riddled with shouting and misuse of bold, italic and underline, that I'm having a dispute with the manga being Gothic fiction. It might get out of hand in the near future, so I'd like you to keep an eye on it. ~Itzjustdrama C ? 22:56, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Allen Walker split proposed here. ~Itzjustdrama ? C 19:26, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Seeing how two of the articles are already up to snuff, all that needs to be done is promote the chapters and characters lists up to FL. I believe the chapter list is close to FL, and I even tried once already to promote it last May. The character list has extensive sourcing from the manga, and we're probably going to have to remove the five images in the infoboxes in lieu of a group image (but I feel the image of Hazumu as a boy should be kept in the end).-- 09:19, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I concur that the chapter list is pretty close to FL, and probably, a quick copy-edit will be enough (I'll try to find time to copy-edit it). The character list needs a reception section if it wants a chance to pass at FLC. However, there are seven characters (not counting Hazumu's parents, who appear to be rather minor), so would merging the character list into Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl be plausible? The level of in-universe detail in the character list seems rather high, and the material could probably be condensed in the main article. The "characterization" section could probably be merged into the "manga" and "anime" sections of the main article. Just putting this forward because as the character list currently stands, it won't pass at FLC without a reception section (and conception, if possible), and would probably need a significant copy-edit and condensing of in-universe details. By the time we get there, the list is probably in a mergeable form (as it has only seven key characters). sephiroth bcr (converse) 16:32, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Even if we did condense the information, I don't think it should be merged back merely because I feel it'd bloat the main article with information about the supporting cast when it doesn't need it. I do in fact own the official fan book, and it does have good information about the creation of the characters, but I'd need to translate it, which would take time, or if I could find a transcription of it online (but I highly doubt it) I'd be able to translate it much quicker. As for reception, I don't even know where to look for that. ANN has reviewed the manga/anime before, so I guess that's a start. And how much per character would have to be removed for the in-universe concern?-- 22:57, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • With Naruto going to WP:GAN, I might as well propose this. The Naruto episode lists need to be cleaned up and separated via seasons (don't need to be brought up to FL though, only the main list), and the Naruto: Shippuden list needs to split the lists via seasons. As GAs on the films are near-impossible for the ones not released in English, creating a List of Naruto films and peer reviewing it (as it will have only six items, making it ineligible for WP:FLC) will be necessary. Rest is pretty straightforward. — sephiroth bcr (converse) 22:34, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

      • Yes, at some juncture. I'm extremely busy until next week with finals and all so I'll see what I can do after that. — sephiroth bcr (converse) 22:56, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
