Can you tell us what operating system you are on? --Stephan Schulz (talk) 07:43, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

operating sytem is windows XP — Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.187.124.140 (talk) 09:20, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I have no experience with LaTeX on Windows. But TUG seems to suggest proTeXt, which has an automatic installer (which is a binary you do have to run...in Windows typically by double-clicking, but again, I don't install stuff on Windows, either). Good luck! --Stephan Schulz (talk) 16:45, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What happened when you typed "latex test.tex"? At the very least you must have gotten a response like "'latex' is not recognized as an internal or external command." -- BenRG (talk) 00:12, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

IE opening the wrong page edit

To make things easier for some of my co-workers I set up IE8 to open up six pages when started. These would be the only pages that would be needed for work. If they want to look around other sites they can use the backup computer and any browser they want. I set it up a few weeks ago and it worked fine until yesterday when instead of opening up the Nav Canada site the first tab opens up MSN while the other five tabs work fine. I tried setting back to the Nav Canada site but it won't stick and reverts to MSN. We can't change to a different browser or OS, using XP, due to it being critical for work. Installing other software over time lead to problems. Any ideas on how to get IE to stay with the Nav Canada site rather than MSN? CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 16:35, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, there's a "custom MSN IE8 release (mentioned here)" - which doesn't allow one to change their homepage (which would explain why the first page that opens keeps reverting to MSN) and has it default to MSN. So you'll have to uninstall and then install the normal IE8. Hope this helps, --Yellow1996 (talk) 17:50, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Thanks. I'll give that a try tomorrow when I'm back at work. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 14:19, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Alternatively, this sounds like an example of homepage hijacking similar to what some viruses do. There might be a second component which checks each time the browser is started to make sure the hijack is still in place. It might be worth scanning for viruses. Then again, I doubt any virus writer would set the hijack to force MSN on you. Astronaut (talk) 17:05, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah; Usually it's a fake version of Google or something (which always redirects to a phishing site or likewise) I don't see what they would gain from forcing MSN on anybody! ;) --Yellow1996 (talk) 17:54, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if it's possible to beat them at their owned game. Set the router to return a page containing a single link when asked for anything fitting "http://*.msn.com/*.html". Still one click to go, but should shut MSN up for good. - ¡Ouch! (hurt me / more pain) 07:19, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. I wonder if it's the security software (the name escapes me right now) that thinks IE has been hijacked and is returning it to the original MSN. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 06:51, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's certainly possible. I think MSN is usually what IE starts off with when you download it(?) So your AV etc. could be returning it to default; some security programs can be quite "false alarm-y" when it comes to these things. --Yellow1996 (talk) 16:18, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

put a database on my website for anyone to use? edit

hello, i have a simple .sql script i made in a database class that creates two tables and puts data into them. is it possible to put this .sql script on my website and make it public so that i can show people what i made? or is this not possible? its a wordpress site, too. i only know the basics of sql and some html. hope this question makes sense..Jijjut99 (talk) 20:37, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It should be easy enough to zip up the file so that anybody who cares to can download it. Hcobb (talk) 21:05, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Since a sql script is just text you can show it directly in the html. If you want to format it neatly with indents, you can enclose it in < pre > and < /pre > tags (without the spaces) which are used often in technical blogs. Sandman1142 (talk) 23:25, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
