Public outreach edit
Objective: Delivery of 3+ public workshops for editors (i.e. edit-a-thons); help organise and host other Wikimedia related events for members of the public, Wikimedians, researchers and librarians such as workshops, Edit-athons, meetups, backstage pass tours
- 9th Month Outcomes:
- Spoke at the What I Know Is Symposium at the University of Stirling, 19 March; following from that event contact with the Scottish Government regarding work with Wikimedia in Scottish schools - one of the proposed outcomes from that contact is the organisation of a Wiki training session for pupils involved in the Digital Leaders programme (programme involves school pupils training teachers in tech-related fields). Whether this could be combined with the proposed JISC capture online training session is in discussion.
- Assisted Toni Sant with the TaPRA Wikipedia Workshop, Glasgow on 20 March, this was a very successful event and contact was made with Laura Molloy at HATII who was interested in the possibility of future WMUK collaborations and events
- Ran the Scottish Women in Computing Editathon which saw four attendees, all of whom were existing Wikipedia editors and two of whom were infrequent contributors or had not contributed since creating the account. All expressed an interest in future ScotWiki events, particularly focusing on Women in STEM research
- An informal training workshop is being held with YMT Wikimedian Pat Hadley in Edinburgh for the organisers of a future Open Access Archaeology edit-a-thon on Scottish Archaeology. The meetup is on 19 March at 13.00 in the Holyrood 9A, and will involve a brief introduction to editing Wikipedia as well as conversation about the organisation of the edit-a-thon itself.

Staff workshops and events edit
Objective: Organise and host workshops for Library staff to explain how they can directly contribute their knowledge and expertise to develop Wikipedia articles; deliver 7+ workshops for National Library of Scotland staff and researchers or related institutions
- 9th Month Outcomes:
- A Wikipedia/Digital Open Access training event will be held during the NLS's annual 'Learning at Work' week; the workshop will be held with the Library's IPR Officer Fred Saunderson on 27 May and will focus on the Library's Digital Content policy and encouraging staff engagement with Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons
Contributor communities edit
Objective: Help establish relationships with the Scottish Wikimedia community, editors and projects
- 9th Month Outcomes:
- An ORG meeting will be held on 10 May in Edinburgh and several ScotWiki representatives will be there to discuss Wikimedia in Scotland and to connect with other Open Rights/Open Knowledge advocates who are in attendance
- A fifth ScotWiki meetup in Edinburgh was held on 30 March which, despite being Mother's Day, 3-5 people attended and discussion included a 'documenting the referendum' edit-a-thon. One attendee is in the process of organising an edit-a-thon on Scottish Archaeology (see above)
Material for future digitisation edit
Objective: Explore adding digital resources such as digitised books, articles, photographs and posters to Wikimedia Commons; work with staff, including librarians and curators, to identify areas of Wikipedia and sister projects that could be enriched with resources and knowledge from the Library’s collections
- 9th Month Outcomes:
- The trial release of NLS digital content to Wikimedia commons is slowly under way. In addition to the content previously approved for the Flickr account, several hundred additional images and files have been selected for upload. Currently, the Scottish Bridges digital collection has been identified for initial upload once a template has been created. Contact has been made with Commons contributors who are familiar with batch upload tools and the process, and work on a template for NLS content is under way.
- The decision has been made with Digital Access manager Gill Hamilton to release the images in smaller batches according to their originating collection - the first identified for release have been the photographs of the Forth Bridge and the Tay Bridge; this is partly to allow for the development and familiarisation with the batch uploading process and also partly to encourage more effective use of the images on Wikimedia Commons after their upload
- Following a conversation with curators at Edinburgh City Libraries during the 2014 EDGE Conference, a second Wikimedia Takes Edinburgh photo expedition has been proposed for July 2014. The event would specifically be designed to correspond with the release of images from the NLS' and Edinburgh City Libraries' shared collection of 19th and early 20th century photographs of Edinburgh (prospect of a 'now and then'-type focus was raised). A meeting with the National Records of Scotland has been arranged for 5 May to discuss their involvement in the use of this material in Wikipedia articles, potentially identifying a few key 'lost' landmarks in Edinburgh for which old and new photos of the location could be uploaded and information from the NRS and the NLS could be used to create or improve articles on an area, event, or landmark.
