Page Triage newsletter

Hey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).

The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.

New Pages newsletter

Hey all :)

A couple of new things.

First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.

On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in the New Pages Feed and it should appear on the right.

It's still a beta version - bugs are expected - and we've got a lot more work to do. But if you see something going wrong, or a feature missing, drop me a note or post on the project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 00:11, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Won't other people who are less perceptive read it as permission to offer their own replies in the support section? Page Curation update

Hey all :). We've just deployed another set of features for Page Curation. They include flyouts from the icons in Special:NewPagesFeed, showing who reviewed an article and when, a listing of this in the "info" flyout, and a general re-jigging of the info flyout - we've also fixed the weird bug with page_titles_having_underscores_instead_of_spaces in messages sent to talkpages, and introduced CSD logging! Page Curation newsletter

Hey Yaris678. This will be, if not our final newsletter, one of the final ones :). After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. Changes between this and the last release include deletion tag logging, a centralised log, and fixes to things like edit summaries.

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

MGM-52 Lance Edits regarding potential copyright issue

An Issue you are involved in, regarding the MGM-52 Lance Article is taking place on that Article's Talk Page. Several Users have repeatedly removed the section "Operators" with the assertion that it contains copyrighted material. Several Users, including myself have just reverted the edits on that Page. I am opening a discussion on that Article's Talk Page in the hopes that a consensus can be reached and the constant reverting can be ended. Hello. As a participant in Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Abortion article titles, you may wish to register an opinion on its followup RFC, Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Abortion advocacy movement coverage, which is now in its community feedback phase. Please note that WP:RFC/AAMC is not simply a repeat of WP:RFC/AAT, and is attempting to achieve better results by asking a more narrowly-focused, policy-based question of the community. Assumptions based on the previous RFC should be discarded before participation, particularly the assumption that Wikipedia has or inherently needs to have articles covering generalized perspective on each side of abortion advocacy, and that what we are trying to do is come up with labels for that. This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Did you ever create a scripting and querrying language for Huggle, called Snuggle?

The thing is, EpochFail is creating (very useful looking) program under the same name.

I really don't see the point. Hubble Constant hasn't returned and there has been no further discussion in over 3 weeks. What's disputed? I just pushed some good changes out including quite a few of your suggestions. Progress on WP:Snuggle and work log

I've been making some progress on Snuggle development recently and I could use your feedback. Specifically, I've created a work log that I plan to update every time I get a chance to work on Snuggle. My intention is that you'll be able to watch that page to track my progress so I can get your feedback on features when they are early in development. The most recent entry (also the only entry) discusses new functionality for interacting with newcomers via Snuggle. I posted some mockups in the work log that show how I imagine the new features to work and I could use some feedback before I start writing the code. Liverpool meetup -

Hi Yaris678, just getting in touch because I thought you may have attended the members meetup in Liverpool, and was wondering if you would have time/the inclination to put together a few words on how it went for the WMUK members newsletter? Vital articles discussion

Talk:SMART criteria#Requested move

Please see WP:RMCI#Determining consensus, which explains the difference between RM and AfD closes: "Unlike articles for deletion, where lack of participation requires relisting, no minimum participation is required for requested moves because for most moves there is no need to make a request at all...lack of consensus among participants along with no clear indication from policy and conventions normally means that no change happens...." I have an RM in the backlog myself with no consensus, so I'm just waiting for an uninvolved admin to come along and close it; I'm certainly not taking the lack of consensus personally. As I mentioned on my talk page, you can take it to move review or request input from other editors for a new move request. Since the target title is redlinked, is there a reason for not just moving it yourself? All the best, Miniapolis 00:51, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your explanation of the requested move process. It looks like I shouldn't have requested a move at all!

I realised that I could just move the page, as you indicate. However, I thought I could avoid the potential for wikidrama if I started a discussion about it first. I now realise that I should probably have just started a discussion and not used the requested move template, which pulls the discussion into a process that is more suitable for moving one page over another.

Of course now I am a bit stuck as to what to do next. Maybe I will restart the discussion in a separate section without any template/listing. Any thoughts on this?

That's a good idea, or you could ask BDD if at this point they'd object to a move. You're right—RM can be a can of worms, attracting editors who like to argue about what day of the week it is :-). The only times it's necessary are if the target title is a redirect (which needs to be deleted to make room) or if the move is controversial. Being WP:BOLD rarely hurts. Huggle 3

Hey Yaris678! I am Petrb, one of core developers of Huggle, the antivandalism tool, which you are beta testing (according to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members#Beta_testers). I am happy to announce that Huggle 3 is ready for some testing. You can read more about it at WP:Huggle/Huggle3_Beta. Please keep in mind that this is a development version and it is not ready for regular use. That means you must:

• Watch your contribs - when anything happens you didn't want, fix it and report a bug
• Frequently checkout source code and build latest version, we change it a lot

If you find any problem with a feature that is supposed to work perfectly, please let us know. Some features are not ready yet, it is listed in known problems on Huggle3 beta page, you don't need to report these - we know it! So, that's it. Have fun testing and please let us know about any problems, either using bugzilla @ http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/ or #huggle ^connect. Huggle 3 beta is out - and we need more feedback!

Hey Yaris678, how are you? I am Petrb, one of huggle developers, and you are currently subscribed as a beta tester of huggle on meta (meta:Huggle/Members. You may not have noticed, but this week I released first beta precompiled installers for ubuntu and microsoft windows! Wikipedia:Huggle/Huggle3_Beta has all the links you need. So if you can, please download it, test it and report all bugs that is really what we need now. Don't forgot that as it's just a beta it's unstable and there are some known issues. Be carefull! There's a school of thought that suggests we picked the wrong ratio to be the fundamental constant and we ought to have used the ratio between the circumference and the radius of a circle, not its diameter. The $e^{i\pi }$ equalling -1 is elegant because it links some of the fundamental constants in maths so simply. But if we had picked 6.283... as our fundamental constant, we would indeed have a simple relationship that yielded 1 instead of -1. Have a look at http://tauday.com/tau-manifesto if you get a chance. Hi DES,

In most cases like that I think it would make sense to PROD anyway. If the consensus there is that it is worth a speedy delete then we don't need to wait 7 days. If there is some problem with the article being in main space while it is being discussed then it can be userfied. If and only if I thought that some significant harm being done by an article, and that this harm would continue if the article was userfied, then I would consider speedying an article that did not look like it met any criteria.

There are several advantages to going to PROD in this way:

• It reduces the chance of making a mistake.
• Someone at PROD may point out a criterion that is does meet, which would be useful to learn from.
• If no one can point out a criterion that it does meet, then we may be able to work out a new criterion which is worth adding to the list.

New huggle 3.1 is going to be released soon

Hi Yaris678, we are to release a new major version of huggle, but we did receive almost no feedback from our beta testing team, which you are a part of (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members). It would be of a great help if you could download it (if you have windows, all you need to do is getting http://tools.wmflabs.org/huggle/files/huggle3.1.0beta.exe and putting it to a folder where you have installed huggle) and test it. You can always get a help with making it @ #huggle ^connect!

Major changes:

• Multisite support - you can now log in to unlimited number of wikis in 1 huggle session and get a huge queue of all edits made to these wikis. This is good for smaller projects which gets overlooked often.
• Ranged diffs - you can select multiple revisions and get a huge diff that display all changes done to them.
• Fixes of most of bug reports we had so far

RFC Closure at Bharatiya Janata Party

Regarding this RFC closure by you, I wanted to clarify:

1. This RFC was responded to last, 24 days ago. There were three in favor of keep, including one not-involved editor, saying the author is notable (he has a detailed Wikipedia page too) and the book is precisely on the article topic. And two in favor of removing citing fringe theory and reputation of author without providing any reference.
2. You have said: Those arguing for inclusion appear to misunderstand Wikipedia's policies, guidelines and general practice. Excluding this book from further reading is not the same as excluding it from Wikipedia. But "Excluding... from Wikipedia", was never an argument for keep by anyone. and as a matter of fact this book is mentioned on three other WP articles.

Several of those in favour of keeping the book in further reading alluded to or explicitly mentioned notability. That is why I felt the need to mention "exclude from Wikipedia" in the close. Yes, appropriateness of the book and notability of author was mentioned by the three keep`voters (including one non-involved editor). You appear to want to rehash the argument you had on the article talk page with me, here. I suggest you instead reflect on what has been said and consider the possibility that the arguments in favour of keeping the book in the further reading section better reflect Wikipedia policies and guidelines. For example, how might WP:BURDEN and WP:ELPOV relate to this? If you see an aspect of this that doesn't make sense to you, I urge you not to seize on it as proof that you were right all along. The point about WP:BURDEN is that is there is a reasonable disagreement about whether or not something should be included, then the burden is on the person who wants to include it to show that it is supported by reliable sources. No one has to prove that the theory is not fringe. There are some indications that the book is fringe so, unless someone can provide significant evidence that it is not, those who do not want to mention it in the further reading section are going to win the argument. I see no consensus for delete when the majority of votes were for keep. The discussions on this were unfortunately spread over more than a handful of pages: have you read all of them before closing the RFC?

I have now asked for a second opinion on this from an admin who has not edited this topic area before (you just recently edited this topic area, i.e. the Indo-Aryan migration article). Regarding your comment that there are "plenty of negative comments out there", first, wikipedia is not censored, so even controversial books should be included, second, this book is not even one of his controversial ones, like his books on Negationism, Islam or Indo-Aryans. That the book is notable and cited by other academics, and his views on BJP are cited by the top senior BJP leader, has already been explained in the previous discussions (have you read them?). If this is how "wikipedia works", I could go to the Featured Article "Yasser Arafat" and remove half the books in the Further reading sections, because I believe that they are not up to the highest standards, as half of those books were written by mere journalists, who are less qualified than somebody like Elst.

Wikipedia Science Conference

Hello Yaris You're receiving this update because you asked to be informed about the Wikipedia Science Conference taking place in London on 2nd and 3rd of September. Thanks for your interest.

The call for proposals is now public and session proposals are coming in. The two keynotes, and some other invited speakers, have graciously accepted. In mid-May we will bring together a programme, a publicity poster, and an online booking form. Then we'll begin the main publicity and will need your help getting the word out.

Please put in a session proposal if you've been thinking of doing so: the deadline is the 8th May. This is far from the only way to be involved. The conference will need session moderators, a programme review group, and other volunteers: if there is a specific role you are interested in, or if you have any other questions, please email me at m.l.poulterbristol.ac.uk.

Personal note: I am going to hold you & Andy to your (very welcome!) pledges to organise the unconference block on the second day. When the programme is announced it will include the times of that block. We have the entire conference facility, which includes two breakout rooms and a large catering area as well as the auditorium.
