Co-nommed you. That's five now =P. Good luck! weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 09:41, 20 April 2008 (UTC) See below.Reply

Proposed co-nomination by Rudget edit

Unfortunately, Wisdom, I'm going to have to let you down for the co-nomination offer I made last month (maybe earlier this month). This is due to the many statements which appear to have come out of nowhere. I'll still offer my support, however. I hope you understand. Regards, Rudget 10:53, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

By the way, I forgot to ask if you want one from me, Wisdom. I've removed it for now, but if you do... weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 15:05, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've removed my co-nom permanently! I'd prefer Rudget to be the co-nom as he has been here longer and is more respected. TheProf - T / C 16:52, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks guys I appreciate it. Rudget, I'm assuming you were referring to co-noms that were unplanned? Wisdom89 (T / C) 19:21, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hey just to let you know, it appears you never accepted the RFA :-) « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) 19:23, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yup, I was just about to, when I saw the "new message" banner pop up! hehe. Wisdom89 (T / C) 19:25, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Lol, can't wait to see you with the admin bit, it will make all of our jobs easier :-) Good luck! « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) 19:26, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'd just like to say good luck in your current RfA, you're a good user and you certainly deserve it. I'm surprised anyones even opposed you, quite frankly, but theres always going to be a few! Good luck and happy editing. Regards, CycloneNimrodTalk? 22:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

UAA and your comments at RFA edit

Hi, you say that usernames can be tricky; I agree, but that's why there's a UAA and an RfCU. Obvious vios go to UAA, anything else can go to request for comments usernames. The obvious vandals can be blocked pretty quickly. After that there are role accounts, or accounts used for spamming. Those editors don't need to be kicked off WP as fast as possible. They do need to be told why role accounts are not allowed, and what the policy is on COI. Some (and I accept that our definitions of some might vary!) of those editors might register a proper account and make careful contrib to talk pages, but I oubt they'll do that if they get booted with a username warning and no explanation of WP policies. Kind Regards, Dan Beale-Cocks 23:18, 20 April 2008 (UTC) I'm putting thi on your talk page because I didn't want to de-rail his RFA.Reply

Your RFA edit

Wisdom, I want you to know one thing, first and foremost. We care. I very much echo Pedro's comments here. I know it seems the RFA is going downhill now (and it may continue to do so, I don't know) but you are still a reverred member this community treated with the highest regard (as is everybody). It is regretable that this has happened, but unfortunately, but it is just one of those things. I wish you ever luck in the future and hopefully you'll take some consolation in the fact that 2 of your co-nominators had failed an RFA. Kind regards, Rudget 14:52, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wow, Rudget pretty much said exactly what I came here to say. RFA sucks. You don't. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 23:26, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah dude, it took me 3 RfA's before I got the mop and the first two where like hell. Keep you chin up! Tiptoety talk 23:27, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

The three of you, I appreciate the comments! (and the co-noms!) I honestly do. It's a shame it degenerated the way it did. I'm frustrated and disconcerted to say the least, but, I'm more than positive I'll bounce back after a short two day or so Wikibreak. Or maybe I'm just saying that now and I'll be contributing without falter like nothing happened : ). Unfortunately, I just have to say that I am beyond disappointed in some of the opposes, not that there are opposes. I honestly feel that RfA is, without a doubt a fishing expedition. Once a user produces a few diffs, from one to even three months in the past, it's all over. But again, I will not allow this incident/process to extinguish my desire to contribute to the Encyclopedia. I. Have. The. Passion. Cheers!Wisdom89 (T / C) 23:53, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Comments Regarding Your RFA edit

Hi Wisdom, I'd like to say that it's a real shame that you're withdrawing your RFA, and an even greater shame that the community opinion would be swayed by something as trivial (and mildly contradictory) as strong community support on the RFA's onset. I wish you the best of luck in whatever future endeavors into adminship you choose to take, and, barring some unusual action, you'll have my support then as much as now. In any event, good luck! --Liempt (talk) 00:18, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Me too. I usually stay away from RfA, but have always liked reading it for entertainment (in the way one watches a car wreck on the highway, or watching The Wire). Lately, I've noticed such negativity that I've decided to throw out "supports" to those whom are great Project volunteers but seemed to be taking a beating. Listen, frankly, I do not agree with your philosophy on RfA (my philosophy is support all civil contributors and encourage all others)...but honestly, you make solid, dedicated contributions. I just cannot bear to see someone who is, in good faith, making efforts to contribute to a free, open-licensed, educational project (without getting a paycheck!) such as this one get thrashed like that. Keep up the good work and don't let this shake your dedication. Your contributions are valued. Lazulilasher (talk) 00:48, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your request for adminship edit

I have closed your request for adminship in accordance with your wish to withdraw for now. Feel free to re-apply when you feel that you have addressed your opposition's concerns and that enough time has passed. Best wishes. Acalamari 00:22, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your RfA edit

Sorry about your RfA... I was probably going to support you (after I looked into the deletion tag allegation.) Good luck when you run again... you probably want to wait a while before running again (eg 6 months.)Balloonman (talk) 02:06, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

For the record, it was my confidence that you'd fix things with that user that kept me in your support column. I DO think you'd make a good admin, but your recent withdrawl is understandable, and I look forward to a more ardent support next time around. Give it 6 to 9 months though... show others you're your own beast now, and go with things that way. ThuranX (talk) 03:51, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Wisdom, its a real shame the way this RfA panned out. Lots of support !votes though, so you can take some positive's from it. Some of the opposes were ridiculous! All i can do is apologise for my actions before transclusion, offer my continued support and wish you the best of luck in RfA Wisdom89 4 ;-) TheProf - T / C 11:40, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey dude, like the others said, I'm really sad about your RfA. I think, wait, I know you'd make a great admin. Oh well. Let me know when you go for it again. Regards. Thingg 14:28, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Wisdom...just to let you know how saddened I was by you having to withdraw your Rfa. I know that you would have made a great admin! Thanks for all your work. --Cameron (t|p|c) 14:47, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey all, thanks for the great bout of confidence, it really lifts the spirit! I going to continue to strive to improve myself and learn from the slip ups. I am undaunted and determined to contribute to Wikipedia as an editor first. Perhaps after sufficient time has passed (5-8 months), I'll reconsider running. Cheers! Re:message edit

Thanks for the message & glad there's no hard feelings. RfAs have never yet been personal for me. I have good reasons for opposing on the grounds of career mandarinism you know, and these concern wikipedia's health and not any individual. These reasons, though daft to some, are concerns to others such as myself. And since the intention of our rules on Assuming Good Faith is to lessen conflict on mainspace and other such pages, there's no obligation to feign it on RfAs where wikipedia benefits more by honest counsel. Horses for courses. BTW, just out of curiosity, with your extensive biology/physiology background, how come you don't contribute so much to those articles? Is it that you like to get away from it all? Regards, Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 01:57, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey Wisdom edit

Your RfA result was a black eye for Wiki. I saw no 'oppose' that changed my own opinion in way at all. If you did it again tomorrow my vote would be exactly the same. You should have been voted in as an admin on your first go around. It will happen someday. Just remember, your RfA didn't fail, Wikipedia did. Cheers and take care! Norepi makes you think better edit

I disagreed rather directly to your response to a question at the science reference desk, and decided to send you my reply directly to facilitate dialogue:

In response to your question specifically, no, being stressed does not make you think better. The Blood brain barrier prevents large molecules in the blood stream from entering the nervous system, protecting it from most infections. Although norepinephrine can be found in the brain and in the body in general, the norepinephrine produced by the adrenal glands doesn't reach the brain. Norepinephrine in the brain is produced by neurons and stays in the brain.
Besides, think pracitcally: when you're stressed, don't you find that you are more grumpy, unstable and more prone to making bad decisions? Do you personally think that you or those around you "think better" when you're stressed? Faster maybe, but better?
Moreover, although drugs that boost norepinephrine availability have been useed to treat ADHD, the general idea that having alot of neurotransmitter in general makes you think better is a little confused. Having alot of a neurotransmitter may sound good but it's usually not and often can result in psychiatric disorders of chemical imbalance. Dopamine is commonly used as an example: dopamine deficiency results in Alzheimers, and dopamine excess can cause Schizophrenia. --Shaggorama (talk) 09:28, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have replied at the reference desk. I am aware of all of the above information. You are absolutely correct in all of your assertions, however, you are forgetting the role of norephi in the CNS during periods of stress. Wisdom89 (T / C) 15:22, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

It just says it should be only done in very rare and exceptional circumstances. Just thought I would say since I would imagine you are going to reapply for another RfA at some time. On another note, I am starting to regret opposing your RfA. You are planning to run again at some point, right? :) asenine t/c\r (fc: f2abr04) 15:40, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Philosopher RFA edit

Hey Wisdom, I just made a very lengthy, wordy, obtuse, and I belive, accurate, post on User talk:Gwynand regarding this RfA. A lot of what I said there may in fact apply to your stance on Philosopher's RfA as well if you are interested in reading it. Cheers, my domestic beer drinking friend, (and way too funny, when I first hit show preview, I had mistakenly typed "fiend"...hee hee! Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 18:40, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dear Wisdom 89 edit

I see that you have researched "Rush" quite well, and I can find no fault in your reasoning for good research and wanting to delete an article based upon its not being well-end-notated. At present, however, I hope that you can understand that my present project, "The Long Lost Son", is a work in progress and several changes have been made just in this last 1 hour (today: 11:51 EST, 4/28/08)[1] Also, for movies, realize that some leeway is given to the authors if there is no advertising and if common sense appears to be the product of good workmanship on the said movie. Currently, the entry has been annotated with end-notes (as references which you can check for yourself and see) and is formatted in a more wiki-appropriate way. Therefore, if you would be so kind, then please let the project stand while I make additional adjustments to the entry so as to further upgrade its content...you will notice that it does contain internal links at this point. Otherwise, thanks for your interest in my entry, for policing the wikipedia for correctness, and I also would like to add that my beautiful sister[2] and my brothers and I are big "Rush" fans. Have a good day and a smile. Sincerely, Greg Alan Zimmerman 03:54, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Spammers and spam pages edit

I honestly suggest slowing down at UAA.

Why? Are you considering slowing your deletion of spam?

Have you ever considered talking with a newbie instead of just reporting them?

What, you mean users like The Coppley Apparel Group (talk · contribs), Winfield Flower Shoppe‎ (talk · contribs), PUSSY DOCTOR (talk · contribs), Breast enlargement (talk · contribs), Redpath Funeral Home‎ (talk · contribs), and Brandnewhomes (talk · contribs)? There's nothing TO say, is there? --Calton | Talk 01:34, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually there is, UAA is becoming tighter and tighter regarding policy. Yes, the above are the names of organizations/entities and the like, but, by getting them hard or soft blocked you're dancing on WP:BITE. Try using a {{usernameconcern} template. You might be able to salvage them from never using Wikipedia again. Wisdom89 (T / C) 01:43, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually there isn't: the citing of WP:BITE is meaningless, as I'm simply enacting and enforcing common sense and policy, and not engaging in unctuousness and pointless bureaucracy for its own sake.
You might be able to salvage them from never using Wikipedia again.. For spammers, this is a bad thing, why, exactly? Hint: discouraging spamming is what's needed, not encouraging it. --Calton | Talk 02:06, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I just don't agree with your shotgun approach at WP:UAA, that's all. I don't see it as encouraging, more like reforming or educating new users on what Wikipedia is about. They may stick around. Just my two cents. Wisdom89 (T / C) 05:53, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I updated the caption. However, if one knows the context, the original is perfectly appropriate, as his life over the past 7 or so years have revolved around the game. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Versailles2k (talkcontribs) 06:58, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

For reverting this. It seems that all the edits to 24 articles are largely by anons. Feels like I'm one of the very few users editing 24 articles. Deletionist challenge edit

Hi Wisdom89! I have completed the Deletionist challenge that was listed at WP:AWC and carefully nominated 50 articles for speedy deletion since signing up. My diffs (notifications to the speedy-page author) are here. So you know, I did use Twinkle in the process of tagging those articles, but I tried to be as careful as possible with each case. --JamieS93 16:52, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the barnstar and nice comments! :)
I wanted to mention something about the deletionist challenge. I feel that it was actually a fine thing to start in the first place - as long as the participants would treat their actions after signing up exactly the same as before, and just as careful as before. I decided to use this AWC challenge as an opportunity to become more of a Newpage patroller and get a better knowledge and feel for the CSD criteria, which I feel has happened in a positive way. Since finishing the challenge, I found that I still have a continuing desire to be active at Newpages the same as before; not for an award, but just because I found that I really enjoyed the work and would like to continue getting more experience with the CSD. And that's what I intended to use the opportunity as; to encourage myself to be more involved in certain areas of Wikipedia (similar to the AfD challenge). As for the use of Twinkle, I think what matters is that you use it to do careful, responsible actions. Without Twinkle, it's still pretty easy to tag things for deletion and be too hasty about the decision; the use of an automated tool would simply reveal an underlying problem of being a bit too hasty in the first place. I personally like to use Twinkle because it automatically notifies the author of the page being speedy-deleted, which is something that could potentially, but shouldn't be, accidentally forgotten.

Hi Wisdom89. Regarding this: Are MySpace links discouraged under WP:EL? Was there some discussion about this? These links are on so many musician articles. I don't mean to sound facetious; I'm seriously asking. Perhaps {{MySpace}} should be re-nominated for deletion if this is the case. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 02:45, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just read Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2006 November 25#Template:MySpace. It looks as if there are some reasonable arguments on both sides. Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 03:26, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's an interesting discussion indeed. However, WP:LINKSTOAVOID #'s 1 and 10 seem to be pretty explicit, especially the latter. Wisdom89 (T / C) 05:51, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't think that it's quite so clear. The lead-in to that numbered list states, "Except for a link to a page that is the subject of the article or an official page of the article subject..." So an exception is made if the MySpace page is an "official" site. (The existence of the {{MySpace}} template also implies a certain consensus that the links are sometimes acceptable.) There are featured articles, on musicians or bands especially, that have the MySpace pages in the External links section. Part of the question comes down to determining what constitutes "official", I suppose. In the case of Opeth I am neutral, but I noticed that when the article was coming up for FA and external links were pruned down, the MySpace link did remain. Gosh, i've wanted to do so much more contributing to wikipedia than i have, your cookie has inspired this fickle blondey to do more to improve this great resource of ours.

Offer of Adoption edit

Hi, I'm glad that you have offered to adopt me! Thanks for the links as well I'll try to go through them as soon as possible. I have quite a heavy workload (school + part time job + interviews) for the next 4 months so my wikipedia activities will most likely be limited to weekends. Meanwhile is there anything you would like to know from me? Wk1989 (talk) 01:53, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

This user asked if I could co-adopt. Is that OK with you? - DiligentTerrier (and friends) 11:54, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yep, no problems there! Two heads are better than one. Wisdom89 (T / C) 15:06, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey wisdom89, thanks for the adoption offer but i think that I'm just gonna be a loner. I like to learn things by doing it, not by being told, but i forgot to take off the box off my userpage. Thanks anyway, and if i do need a little help, i'll come to you for advice!--Dlo2012 (talk) 17:44, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Sorry this reward took so long. I see you have posted the completion message quite some time ago, but since i got stuck with a rather nasty case of the flu, i haven't been around much. Either way: Congratulations on a job well done! Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 17:40, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tayloryomama edit

Can you be bold like that again in the future please? It's always good to have non admin users who understand the username policy patrolling WP:UAA! Ryan Postlethwaite 20:04, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well it's certainly much appreciated. UAA often gets backlogged (as I'm sure you're aware) with usernames that aren't even violations - help removing those is always welcomed. A user like yourself who understands the policy, and is extremely empathetic when dealing with usernames is very much encouraged to help clear the backlogs. Thanks a lot again - it's much appreciated. Ryan Postlethwaite 23:03, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: recent RfA edit

Hey Wisdom. I wanted to address something you said in your support vote for WeBuried. I agree with not going for the pile on oppose for the early diffs, but I was actually trying to implore people to take a look at his Wikipedia space edits. The diffs I provided are just a few, and I would never oppose over minor XfD mistakes. I think if you take a look at his recent history there, you might see some concerns too. Sometimes there is an early pile on support for a candidate with very little review, although from what I see in your RfA participation, I know you certainly aren't an editor who does this. I was going to put my diffs in with a neutral vote at first, but after re-reviewing his wikipedia space contribs, I was comfortable with opposing. He seems like a good kid, I just don't see the judgement I want in an admi, and honestly believe there could be some problems with invovlement at AfD. Anyways... just wanted to comment, and I hate clogging up RfAs so I did it here. Gwynand | TalkContribs 20:40, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Alien vs Pred edit

I think that you put that warning on the wrong userpage as what you have done is you have reverted the vandalism that I have just reverted so it is the original. Be very careful next time. Christopher140691 (talk) 21:57, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I already removed the warning prior to your message. Huggle froze on me while I was trying to undo the edit. Wisdom89 (T / C) 21:59, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thats ok lesson learnt I use twinkle myself its much easier to use and you only have to choose which warning you want to give them and it automatically detects what you have just reverted and then you decide a suitable message. Anyway best be off to bed as have work and exams tommorow. Christopher140691 (talk) 22:02, 7 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah I'm a Twinkle man myself. I gave Huggle a go for the first time the other night, and frankly, it's messy. Wisdom89 (T / C) 01:19, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Patrolling new pages edit

Hello. I noticed today that you were doing newpages patrolling but are not marking some of the pages you visit as patrolled. Though this is not mandatory in any way, and should not be done for all newpages, where appropriate it keeps your fellow patrollers from wasting time reviewing the same page multiple times. In any event, keep up the good work! Thanks. ---- Andrew Mill 01:02, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh yes I know. I ordinarily do this all the time: [3]. Just tonight I got a little lazy after reviewing just a few pages. Thanks for the message though. Cheers. Wisdom89 (T / C) 01:14, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your input would be welcomed edit

Hiya, sorry - this is a bit spammy. You recently commented at my talk page regarding my proposal for a mentoring process that takes us away from "admin coaching" and moves towards a process to provide a support system to help editors who wish it become effective, high quality administrators, and not an administrator for the sake of it. I've created a header at User:Pedro/Mentoring and if you have any time to provide some feedback, or just tinker with it, I'd be grateful. Pedro :  Chat  08:36, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Deletionist challenge edit

I have nominated at least 50 articles for speedy deletion since signing up for this challenge. I know there have been concerns about people tagging articles inappropriately, but I made sure that I tagged only articles that were obvious candidates for speedy deletion. If there was any question in my mind, I placed them on my watchlist and saw what other editors did with them (usually proposing speedy deletion, but using prod in other cases). I actually learned quite a bit about Wikipedia and copyright policies during this challenge, and it also led to other positive contributions (I removed an inappropriate speedy tag that someone else had placed, and I got three vandalism-only accounts blocked indefinitely). Best wishes, GaryColemanFan (talk) 18:37, 9 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm not going to accuse you of that, but just bear it in mind. That's really how it looked after you nominated yourself. Don't sweat it though. Wisdom89 (T / C) 20:04, 10 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rfb participation thanks edit

Hi, WizLXXXIX.

I wanted to personally thank you for taking part in the project-wide discussions regarding my candidacy for bureaucratship. After bureaucratic discussion, the bureaucrats decided that there was sufficient significant and varied opposition to my candidacy, and thus no consensus to promote. Although personally disappointed, I both understand and respect their decision, especially in light of historical conservatism the project has had when selecting its bureaucrats. If you have any further suggestions or comments as to how you think I could help the project, please let me know. Once again, thank you for your both your early and strong support, as well as your participation in all RfA discussions. It is only through community participation that true consensus can be achieved. -- Avi (talk) 16:19, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rutseys Death edit

Hey Wisdom89. I'm not sure if this would make a valid reference, but it does give news of Rutsey's passing. I'm currently in the process of trying to confirm the information one way or the other. I know you do a lot of work with the Rush articles, so I figured I should bring this to your attention. -- WikHead (talk) 15:52, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Since posting this message, I see that others have been hard at work editing the Rutsey article, and have added the link I provided to you as a reference. That link is the first bit of confirmation I've seen myself. I've been searching for information on the topic since early yesterday when it was first posted to the Rutsey article, but like you, kept coming up empty handed. I was about to revert it myself. I will continue looking valid references though, as I'm not sure a blog post actually qualifies as such. Have a nice day! :) -- WikHead (talk)

My RfA edit

Hi Wisdom; I wanted to say thank you for supporting my request for adminship, which passed with 100 supports, 0 opposes and 1 neutral. I wanted to get round everybody individually, even though it's considered by some to be spam (which... I suppose it is! but anyway. :)). It means a lot to me that the community has placed its trust in my ability to use the extra buttons, and I only hope I can live up to its expectations.
