UK Community Notice - IRC meeting

Dear Wikipedian,

This is the first of what will hopefully be a regular notice to help bring together the UK community so that you can be involved in some amazing things. To kick things off, there will be a UK community IRC meeting at 1800 UTC, December 7, 2010 to discuss the future growth and developement of Wikimedia UK. Without huge community support and involvement, the chapter cannot be successful and to get the most out of it, get involved.

For information on the community IRC meeting please go here

More to come about:

  • Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Events
  • 1st Annual UK Wiki-conference
  • Trustee interest meeting - an event for those community members with even just a fleeting interest in becoming trustees of Wikimedia UK.

Many Thanks

Kick promotional

Hey there,

I see that you indefinitely blocked User:Kick promotional. I think that's probably a reasonable move, and certainly in line with policy. The reason that I approached the user so gently myself is that I have just been to Wikimania, and a major theme was editor retention. Apparently a very large percentage of good editors started out with frank vandalism, so I've been going out of my way not to bite anyone! Maybe I've been going a bit too far ;-) --Slashme (talk) 17:13, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

I agree with you entirely, however this is not indiscriminate vandalism from a randomer, but a single purpose account spamming on behalf of a consultancy firm whose aims almost certainly can't be reconciled with Wikipedia's. Nonetheless, I've replaced the block template with the more palatable one. Let's see what happens. WilliamH (talk) 17:28, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Yep, let's see. I'm not holding out much hope, but you never know! --Slashme (talk) 17:34, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Rudolph Ripley

Hi William - just popping in to say that due to the nature of User:Rudolph Ripley's comments and activity - including blasting a number of editor's talk pages with what could be construed as anti-Semitic slurs and vile epithets - I can't believe you are only blocking him for so short a time. Might I suggest that 'indefinite' would be much more appropriate response? I don't see evidence of the kind of 'constructive' edits you suggest make a brief hiatus warranted, and in any case, these kind of comments (in defense of what is clear vandalism) surely deserve the harshest measures. Cheers.Tao2911 (talk) 20:05, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

  • I looked through all of the edits made by the account and I do see constructive ones, e.g. here and here. I'm trying not to judge someone entirely on their worst actions, but first-time blocks are often just 24 hours - 72 is still a very strong response. Blocks aren't punitive either. However, if such behaviour happens again, have no doubt that he will have to find another encyclopedia to edit. WilliamH (talk) 20:23, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
understood. I'm just underscoring my distaste for his shocking comments, I suppose. Thanks.Tao2911 (talk) 21:56, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Need help with references that do not directly tie to my article

Hi William,

It's me, Nancy or AKA nchou who spent 4+hrs on Monday night chatting with you re: getting my MEMS Oscillator article "wikified" correctly.

1) I promised I would finish formatting the remaining 24 or so references listed in my Reference section However, could you help me understand, step by step, what is the best thing to do if I would to include references to people and publications that I've not explicitly mentioned in the body of my article?

In other words, I would like to acknowledge these people and sources, because they've made significant contribution to the development of MEMS Oscillators. But, as is, my article is 5000 words or so long. So, I would rather acknowledge them in a footnote/reference section rather than trying to tie them to the body of my article per se.

2) I'd like to pick up editing where I left off. When are you ususally in the IRC chat room? If I'd like to find you there, what's the best way for me to make that happen, particularly this weekend?

3) Must I arrange (rearrange) all my references in my reference section in the exact order in which they're referenced in the body?

Thanks for your patience, guidedance and effective coaching!

Cheers - Nancy nancy_chou10@hotmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.185.40.208 (talk) 07:28, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

  • Hi, you could easily include a "Further reading" section, which suggests some of the most relevant sources the reader might wish to find. I am often idling in the room, but I couldn't say for sure when exactly I will be there. However you will still find other volunteers willing to help you. You do not need to do anything to anything under the references section. The {{reflist}} tags makes all the inline references appear in the list in the same order as they are inserted into the main body of text. WilliamH (talk) 20:29, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Please review these blocks

There was a bug in MediaWiki 1.18 that caused blocks made via the API to have talk page access disabled when it should have been enabled. This also affected scripts such as User:Animum/easyblock.js. Please review the following blocks to make sure that you really intended talk page access to be disabled, and reblock if necessary.

Comment on Rollback of Page Requested

Hi, I requested the Rollback. The reason I couldn't do it is because the IP involved had removed sections in different edits so I would either have to Undo a few different edits or edit them myself. Asking someone with Rollback to intervene sounded like the easiest solution to me. Etineskid(talk) 01:36, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

  • In future you can simply click the history tab, click the version of the article you wish to restore, click edit and save it. That would have been quicker for you than to file an AN/I request. WilliamH (talk) 01:43, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Stbsyrlax/DeshintaChandra

Have you completed your investigation into these users of ~7am this morning? There is an SPI open at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Hosokawa that names these accounts, so I've ran a check there but deferred to you because I'm not sure if you're coming from a different angle. Please check in there when you have a moment. Thanks! AGK [] 13:17, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

  • I was speaking to DeltaQuad in IRC when this came up, started to look into it, but unfortunately I had to disappear for a couple of hours. I said I don't mind at all if another CU takes over. I don't think you were around to hear that, although it doesn't matter, I trust your conclusion and thanks for your note, your courtesy is appreciated. Of course if you want a second opinion, that's fine too. WilliamH (talk) 13:36, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
    • I figured as much, but didn't want to step on your toes, in case you were linking the investigation to something bigger that I wasn't seeing or wasn't aware of. For your reference, Stbsyrlax was Tkim08 but DeshintaChandra was separate, and Hosokawa was stale so no link could be made up to that master either. I indeffed the two socks and tagged, then closed the SPI. Thanks for your quick response! AGK [] 14:30, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

RE Article Christian Altenburger

Dear WilliamH, You began helping me to get my article accepted by pointing out specific things I needed to change which was very helpful. Could you help me any further? I'm still not sure why it keeps getting rejected. Thank you Aliasgrace101 (talk) 19:00, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

  • Sorry, my access to the computer over the last couple of days has been a bit limited, I'll see what I can do. WilliamH (talk) 11:21, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, I'm finding it difficult to find references about him that aren't concert programs, and for that reason, a couple of the references already given are not acceptable. The ORF report is good but the focus is more on the theft of the instrument. Do you have anything more on him? And has he won any awards? That would also help a lot. WilliamH (talk) 12:15, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

christian Altenburger

I can't find anything on him winning any awards. He's involved in most music festivals in Austria and a great many in Germany too. I found him on the Vienna University website, proving that he is a professor there, and there are reviews of his concerts online. http://www.musikverein.at/monatszeitung/show_artikel.asp?Artikel_ID=1376 Here's an article in the Musikverein magazine of his. Is that any good? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aliasgrace101 (talkcontribs) 16:18, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Student's page content needs shifting--conflicting advice

Dear WilliamH, I am teaching 4 groups of students and each is developing a Wikipedia editing project. One of the group leaders has set up two versions of her sandbox, and the content they need is in the wrong version. Her name is Anna Russett and her username is AnnaRusset but her first sandbox got named User:Annarusset/Personal_sandbox. The content in this improperly named one is what needs to be put into User:AnnaRussett/Personal_sandbox. I put a notice on the talk page and got advice from user Cliff that I could just copy and paste if I didn't care whether the history got transferred. At this point, there is no real history to care about. Will copying and pasting create a problem for the system at large? The pages can't be linked to internally but can be externally from my groups page at User:Wnewbold/groupsF2011 I need to take care of this quickly. Thank you. Christian Altenburger

I agree, it's really difficult to find info on the web other than festival biographies. I have found some newspaper articles which include him. They are all from DIE PRESSE newspaper archives. Are they any good? This one proves that he is the director of the Loisiarte Festival.

http://diepresse.com/home/diverse/archiv/103903/Die-Musikstadt- gratuliert?from=suche.intern.portal

http://diepresse.com/home/kultur/klassik/94097/Loisium-Loisiarte_Die-vier-Elemente-toenen-ab-23-Maerz?from=suche.intern.portal

This is about him playing the composer Schwrtzig's violin concerto. http://diepresse.com/home/kultur/klassik/270938/Mustergueltige-musikalische-Aufbauarbeit?from=suche.intern.portal

Are they any good? The ORF Interview does have a lot of biographical details though I agree it does focus on the violins being stolen. I haven't included that in my article but the way. Should I? Aliasgrace101 (talk) 07:28, 29 October 2011 (UTC)

  • Well, they're somewhat passing. Remember, they don't have to be online sources - got any newspapers or interviews in magazines? :) WilliamH (talk) 02:07, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I just added yet another new user to the list at this page, but saw afterwards that you'd already responded. Is it still possible to process the addition, or should I reopen the request once it has closed? Thanks, Jakew (talk) 21:44, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

  • I've taken a look. CheckUser really can bring about more questions that it answers, and remember, it isn't the be all and end all. Meatpuppetry might be a more likely explanation that sockpuppetry, but whatever's going on, I find it hard to imagine it is the legitimate use of alternate accounts, and remember that meatpuppetry can be considered under the same scope as sockpuppetry. Something's smelly...

Will, seeing that you're also a checkuser, I thought I'd ask you about this one. I received a message earlier that for some reason smells sockish, especially after seeing that this user does not really ever contribute to UAA and similar. It also just seems too odd that someone would log in to only make one edit like that to my talk page. Thoughts? Calabe1992 18:15, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

  • That's a bit tenuous - you're going to need more evidence than simply logging in to make an edit. WilliamH (talk) 23:23, 11 November 2011 (UTC)
Considering that Calabe has left an actual "warning" on my user page about assuming good faith it is a little surprising to find them over here assuming bad, and failing to inform me of the conversation, and making a backdoor attempt to abuse the checkuser system. Weakopedia (talk) 07:29, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
Weakopedia, it is a little concerning on my end to see you once again make an accusation of assuming bad faith while once again blantantly doing so. "Making a backdoor attempt to abuse the checkuser system" - who says? How about coming to a user who has previously offered me advice, and would likely be able to point me in the correct direction here. By what you've posted, you're clearly saying to do what you say, not do as you do. Calabe1992 02:04, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
I also like your informative edit summary on your talk page: "go play with the other children" Calabe1992 02:06, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
  • Weakopedia, you are obviously slighted that you weren't aware of this discussion and I can respect that - the first thing to do is speak with the user concerned before going anywhere else, and I hope Calabe1992 would be willing to say: "yep, you're right - sorry, I should have done it differently." But please note that I can't consider Calabe1992 to be abusing CheckUser when he isn't one. Guys, you aren't going to get anywhere by disputing who is assuming the most good faith and who is assuming the most bad faith, so why not just leave this be? WilliamH (talk) 03:32, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Dear William, when you discover a conversation that is already a week old you might want to think - is your becoming involved after the dust has settled likely to do anything other than enflame the situation? Wikipedia didn't wait around for your answer, and neither did we. Weakopedia (talk) 06:51, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Weakopedia, I would have probably quoted him almost word for word had I found this sooner. But after this response from you, I think you've made it quite clear that you have no intent of AGF or getting anywhere with this. Calabe1992 13:48, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Long resolved, huh? Seems to me that you have some issues yet to be. Calabe1992 13:50, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
  • I'm well aware of discussions where my input is solicited thanks, not least when they occur on my own talk page. What Wikipedia does or doesn't do is not an excuse for one's behaviour. WilliamH (talk) 17:48, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
