Request from an administrator

Can you please provide me the full history of the article Sudha Ragunathan? I have to contest the removal of the article, especially a G11 on a very notable personality as well as a long standing article.

If not, kindly let me know at least the creation date, the number of revisions - so that such information can be useful for next steps in contesting the delete.

Mrs. Sudha Ragunathan is an eminent Carnatic musician and has been awarded the Sangeetha Kalanidhi title, which is considered the highest in this field. She is also a well known playback singer. She has received the 3rd highest honour from Government of India, Padma Bhushan title.

In my opinion, even if there has been peacock terms and other such advert-type verbiage, the page should not be deleted - it should only be edited / trimmed to ensure an encyclopedic content. The page belongs on Wikipedia.

If possible kindly provide a full copy of article at a user sub-page of mine, User:VasuVR/Sudha_Raghunathan, and along with its talk page. A full history would help in cleaning up any fan like updates/ advert like updates by any other user.

Kindly assist in getting this resolved as soon as possible. Thanks.

Hi VasuVR. After reviewing the article, I've restored it and reverted back to an older version. Most of the inappropriate content was added by a single editor, and earlier versions of the page, whilst in need of work, were not (IMHO) so promotional as to warrant deletion. Feel free to make improvements at will. Yunshui  08:22, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much! – Yunshui - glad that you found that the claim is substantiated by the content. I will work on this over next few days, where possible. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 12:30, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

Bageshree page

Hi VasuVR, thanks for the correction. I was previously under the impression that the Carnatic Bageshree was equivalent to the Hindustani version, in which Bageshree is a "big raga". I have edited the page to include a clarification that the bit about not being able to do an extended alap was specific to the Carnatic version of the scale. Oh, and being able to do an alap is something many musicians have demonstrated, so that is not an opinion. 70.114.211.80 (talk) 19:03, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for information. However, demonstration is not considered as Verifiable information, unless a link is given to a Reliable source. That is how Wikipedia works. If not backed up by references, then it is considered original research, which is not included in encyclopedia. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 15:42, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Mnemonics for Carnatic svars at article Svara

Greetings: I've noticed you inserted in article Svara on August 11, 2008, a table containing mnemonics that distinguish the various flavors of Ri, Ga, Dha and Ni used in Carnatic music (ra, ri, ru; ga, gi, gu; dha, dhi, dhu; na, ni, nu). I'm curious where you got them because, while I'm not familiar with the Carnatic system, I'd always thought that the same syllables were used for all three flavors of Ri, Ga, Dha and Ni (just like in Hindustani the syllable Re serves for both Komal Re and Shuddh Re). Another thing I'm curious about is why those mnemonics were changed? As you can see someone changed things, at some point between 2008 and 2018, to something that looks pretty incoherent. What exactly is going on? Thanks. Cheers. Basemetal 20:04, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

@Basemetal: - Thank you for bringing this to my notice. This is one of the older methods used before the Western notation of R1, R2, R3 were used. ra, ri and ru are the three Rishabhas used in Carnatic music. And so on. I have made an edit.
I will add more references soon (hopefully).
VasuVR (talk, contribs) 04:14, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. So these alternate syllables (ra, ri, ru, etc.) were used only as a notational device, not for singing? Do these alternate forms have anything to do with those I've read were used in the musical inscription at Kudumiyanmalai? Basemetal 06:11, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
@Basemetal: - Unfortunately I am out of my depth there, in terms of inscriptions, archeology, etc. If I read up anything, I will reply here - but please do not hold your breath. :-) VasuVR (talk, contribs) 07:38, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. I promise, I won't hold my breath. I expect you know at least what I'm talking about. If not, there is: Venkataraman Premalatha, A Monograph on Kudumiyanmalai Inscription on Music, Madurai, 1986, and an older 1957 article in Sri Varalakshmi Academy Publication Series 3, Mysore, 1957, if you have access to a university library (which I don't, so I have not personally read or even seen them). Basemetal 14:43, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
One additional point - the definition for the word 'mnemonic'. It is defined as system such as a pattern of letters, ideas, or associations which assists in remembering something. Hence, yes, it is used for describing the pattern and it is not about the sounds, syllables, intonation or any such. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 07:46, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
Got it. Thanks. Basemetal 14:43, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

MfD nomination of Template talk:NGO Delhi

Template talk:NGO Delhi, a page which you created or substantially contributed to, has been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; you may participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Template talk:NGO Delhi and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Template talk:NGO Delhi during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Devopam (talk) 09:53, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

@Devopam: - this was tagged during an Assessment drive, at which time the "meager" contents may not have been noticed. I have no objection for this template to be deleted. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 10:31, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
hi @VasuVR: , intent was to nominate the template. Overlooked when I switched over and ended up putting the tag here too. Devopam (talk) 11:17, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
@Devopam: - Hi again. Please note that you have to change all those things. You have to remove the nomination from Talk page. You have to ADD it to the Template page. Please follow the process for TfD (Template for Deletion) and remove the Talk page nomination from MfD (Miscellany for deletion). As I mentioned above, I don't have a problem with removing this template. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 15:51, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
hi @VasuVR: , complied. Now I guess it will go through the automated process itself. Thanks for spotting and alerting once again. Devopam (talk) 04:29, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

Need list of articles in big category

For the category WikiProject India articles, the list of articles is about 190,000 and more. I do not have rights using Autowikibrowser tool to get more than 25,000 names. Anyone with an admin / bot rights can run the no limit queries. Can an admin/ bot please get me the list of pages placed in the category Category:WikiProject India articles - using the No Limits plugin within Autowikibrowser? The results can be emailed to me (cannot be placed in sub-page either due to 2MB limit - see below).

Please see similar earlier request in the past (it had to be emailed), which was very useful for tagging / assessments in WikiProject India Tag and Assessment drives. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 12:35, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

@Ronhjones: Awesome. Yes, the email address is still the same. I have received it. Thank you very much. Have a nice day / evening. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 03:25, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
Good. Note: I only used "Category (NL, Admin and bot)" setting to get that list, I did try "Category (recursive) (NL, Admin and bot, recursive)" but it crashed after some time with "Exception, Out of Memory" - Unlikely to be my PC, as it's 32GB, more likely the program data segment filled up. So there may be some missed files in some deep sub-category. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:04, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
No problem, @Ronhjones:. I can deal with false negatives (items already tagged, but not in the list) manually. The counts seem to indicate that it is quite close to full list - so no issues. Thank you again. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 15:28, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: - BTW, it will crash. The reason is that people continue to include circular-references in categories - A -> (parent of) B -> C -> D -> A or sometimes as bad as A -> B -> A!!! Every year once or twice, I manually search through the "Category Tree" of Category:India, especially the likely culprits, and eliminate a few! Examples are Tamil Culture-Srilanka-Tamil Nadu - being related it ends up having circular references. Second possibility is Punjab-Pakistan-India-Urdu-Hindi-Punjabi related articles. Thirdly some re-organization of states / kingdoms has been done - suddenly some editor thinks D E has to be parent of F, which has to be parent of A and introducing A->B->C->D->E->F->A!! I have tracked down some instances of circular nature of about 8 or 9 deep too.
I think I have done at least a dozen or two in the last 5-8 years. Knowing these, recursive is likely to crash every time in future too! VasuVR (talk, contribs) 17:22, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

@Cyphoidbomb: - thank you for notifying. I had not created the page - only the India project tag I added to the talk page. This too, was done as a batch process against India related categories that had not been tagged.
Given the rationale, I will be voting to delete too! PS: I fixed the red links in your above message. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 03:24, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

RummyCircle Wikipedia Article - Discussion

Hello, VasuVR. You have new messages at VasuVR's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Hi Vasu, I didn't understand why the article on rummycircle is marked to be deleted, pointing that it is written or edited in exchange of money.

The article is absolutely genuine with the limited but right information about the rummycircle platform which is owned by Play Games24x7 Pvt. Ltd. Please let me know what sort of content depicts that the information is build in exchange of money because we would be legally taking this ahead as it is pure natural information about the platform from ages. The only and 1 change we have did around 1 year back is adding the official website link because if the content is about the platform. It is full right to mention the Official website of the platform. I would love to hear back on the same.

If possible, please write back on (Redacted)

Ignoring above comment... VasuVR (talk, contribs) 08:10, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of List of compositions by Muthuswami Dikshitar

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on List of compositions by Muthuswami Dikshitar, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. » Shadowowl | talk 10:08, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Contested the speedy deletion - but personally I will not care if administrators / bureaucrats will misuse methodologies to delete notable information. If there are self-goals by such people, against the Wikipedia vision, mission and goals, then so be it. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 11:36, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Hi. What happened in this discussion?—Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 13:09, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
@Cpt.a.haddock: - it was tagged with a "speedy" and even after I posted a contest, the admin deleted. I got totally disenchanted with the WikiPedia's admins if they can delete this long standing page with lot of information, and that too as a "promotional" material! How could the admins come to the conclusion it was "promotional" - for whom? This was totally crazy. I totally stopped adding or any major editing stuff. I stopped working on WikiProject India related tagging, etc.
OK. Enough of my rant. If something is done and people (plural) apologize, then I may reconsider doing constructive work. Otherwise, it is WikiPedia which continues to lose "good information" - which is supposed to be in the goals - can it be sum total of the world knowledge!
VasuVR (talk, contribs) 13:52, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
It is certainly an issue if the speedy deletion went ahead even after you contested it. It's also pretty shortsighted that the admin chose "G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion" from the drop down box considering that you've been around since 2008. But s/he also notes "no independent sources, no evidence of notability, see WP:YFA". I suspect that s/he looked at the content and guessed it to be someone's first article. This is compounded by the fact that the table is full of youtube links, something that spammers use to promote their content. There are also no references besides these links. These throw up red flags for reviewers. All that said, I think this is information that is important for the article. I've re-added the table to the Dikshitar article. Please consider adding citations for his works and removing all the youtube and audio links. We can then recreate the List article once again. Please see list pages like this and this for examples of referenced composition lists on Wikipedia. Cheers.—Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 14:26, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
@Cpt.a.haddock: - Thank you for the support. With respect to YouTube, I have got sick and tired of some editors (probably with POV) adding them, when not required at all. Moreover, each composition (song) has been rendered by 100s of musicians - hence we should not add any link, as that will start POV wars, by each adding their favorite musician! I have tried removing some YouTube links in the past, but after some time gave up - do only regular editing of text now.
Hope I can spend some time on the list of compositions soon.
VasuVR (talk, contribs) 15:44, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. I've gone ahead and removed the links. What is sorely needed are reliable references.—Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 17:04, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

@Cpt.a.haddock: - Thank you once again. I have added some references, from the physical book I have. We can copyedit the information further over period of time (mismatch between lists of songs in the book vs the information in the article). This book is also referred in many other pages on ragams, which I have edited before. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 04:22, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Great work! I have taken the liberty of editing the references to use the {{sfn}} template as it is cleaner and easier to modify. Could you please check the book to see if it has an ISBN somewhere? There also appears to be a second edition available. If yours is the first edition, please note this in the citation along with the language used which is presumably Tamil. Please keep an eye out for English references as well if possible. I'll be duplicating this comment on the article's talk page. Let's continue this over there. Thanks :)—Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 12:53, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Help needed to assess if maintenance template is needed anymore after 9 years of edits on a B-Class biography

Dear VasuVR, I've contributed majorly to editing a biographical page on Wikipedia called "Bhagwan Gopinath" almost 9 years back in 2011. It however got a maintenance template tagged to clean it up almost immediately and I worked diligently to bring it up to a much cleaner level in the next few months. After this, it also got assessed by you (using an AWB) on Mar 15, 2012 and also got classified as a Class-B biography. Since then, it has further undergone multiple improvement edits in the past 9 years of its existence on Wiki. I thought I'd check with you to see if you could spare some time to see if it still deserves to carry the maintenance template or can these be removed now for good. Unfortunately, the user (Cind.amuse) who tagged it with the maintenance template, though guided me through the process of clean up, has long since passed away so I thought of asking you for your second opinion since you had assessed it once already. Thanks, Warm Regards, Sharda Mandir. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sharda Mandir (talkcontribs) 20:54, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

Invite for discussion on Sector 13, Chandigarh

There is a discussion on the talk page section of Sector 13.

(Disclaimer: This is just an invite for you to participate. I neither encourage you to vote against the topic nor in the favor of the topic. This is just a neutral message for participation and It is totally your decision.)

Following is the brief of the topic :- Manimajra was renamed as sector 13 legally by UT government of Chandigarh in January 2020 . Below are links to the decision:- 1). https://m.timesofindia.com/city/chandigarh/manimajra-to-be-renamed-sector-13-residents-elated/amp_articleshow/73114749.cms .

2). https://www.hindustantimes.com/chandigarh/chandigarh-s-manimajra-is-now-sector-13/story-ploFPCA4UGpDu9ksUxLtdL.html

It is true that the proposal had been initially opposed in december 2019. In the initial proposal, names like Sector M or Sector 26 east were proposed. Here is the link for initial proposals made :-

3)https://m.hindustantimes.com/chandigarh/manimajra-rwa-wants-number-not-m-after-sector/story-Q7ZPsdh5y120cEqlVAKuhP_amp.html

4)https://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-chandigarh-to-finally-get-sector-13-after-54-years-of-formation-2813378 (these articles were published in newspapers in 2019 which is old).

5)https://m.tribuneindia.com/news/archive/chandigarh/mani-majra-to-be-sector-m-863728

(This link i provided over here was published in Tribune India in November 2019 )

But soon the final decision was made which overruled the previous proposals and finally the new name for manimajra was concluded as sector 13 by the beginning of 2020. The next link (6th Link) was also published in Tribune India with the final decision which was declared in February 2020 :-

6)https://m.tribuneindia.com/news/chandigarh/its-official-mani-majra-is-sector-13-of-chandigarh-39042

Here is an example on how to put your decision ___________.

(I do not persuade you to put decision in any side it is totally your decision)
  • Disagree
  • Oppose
  • Support
  • Strong Support
  • Agreed

Click on the edit tab and please copy any 1 vote you want to put from the above or you can put your own decision(vote) which ever you want by putting a * star symbol followed by 3 apostrophe marks ' ' ' and then writing your word for vote like support, agreed etc and finally closing it with again 3 apostrophe marks ' ' ' in the end.

WikiProject Indian Music

Hello,

I wanted to say, "Hello", after I found that one of your images illustrates the Kinnari vina. I have been looking for examples to illustrate this topic which is proving hard to access in English-language sources.

I have been working on expanding and creating new Vina/Veena-related articles. I noticed on the WikiProject Indian Music, it called for merging Saraswati veena into Veena. I wondered if you knew anything about the push. I'm not sure it is a good idea to make the modern instrument represent the entire history of veenas. Still, it could be done...I've been trying something similar in History of lute-family instruments. That however, is becoming much too large. The more I explore the history of veenas, the more I think the article could become too large, if variants of the instrument don't have their own articles.

If you have any concerns/ideas about the India-related musical-instrument articles that I am writing, please let me know.

I had earlier view of merging and keeping the related instruments which have minor variations in on article. Now, I don't think so. However, not able to contribute further than this comment. VasuVR (talk, contribs) 13:46, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
