Thank you, for your recent positive comments about my quality improvement efforts on an article page, much appreciated. :) I see you've contributed to pages about authors and writers, perhaps you'd be interested in joining WP:WikiProject Freedom of speech? This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:26, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Maria Dalmazzo, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Colgate and Pereira (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

Articles for creation is desperately short of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors, in reviewing submissions in the pending submissions queue. Currently there are 2452 submissions waiting to be reviewed and many help requests at our help desk.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog. You might wish to add {{AFC status}} or {{AfC Defcon}} to your userpage, which will alert you to the number of open submissions. Plus, reviewing is easy when you use our new semi-automated reviewing script!

You sent me a message about someone called Claire Balding and I wonder why?

I don't wish to know the person you refer to, have no desire to write about her in any shape shadow or form. So what ever I am supposed to have written did not originate from me.

How do I know this? Simple I am a geologist, and if I write on any pages I write on the geology based pages.

BRACE

Hi there,

I don't understand why the page I have just put up about the dementia charity BRACE has been nominated for deletion. What is wring with it? It is just a factual account of the charity.

Can you please advise in simple terms and I will amend.

Thanks,

Alistair — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alistairclay (talkcontribs) 17:19, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

First, as clearly revealed by a quick Google search, you have a conflict of interest and should not be creating the article in first place; second, it is too promotional in tone; third, it has no citations to reliable sources that demonstrate the notability of the organisation.--ukexpat (talk) 17:23, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

How do I add a "citation needed" reference to unsupported text?

OK, I've read the beginner page on editing. But I still can't figure out how to add a simple "citation needed" reference to text. I sure would appreciate a simple description. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Filbertosis (talkcontribs) 22:07, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

As I explained in reply to your question at the Help Desk, you add the {{Citation needed}} template or its {{Cn}} shortcut. The the template page (click on the blue links) for the documentation.--ukexpat (talk) 01:22, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia page re Kathleen Cody (actor) and questions regarding my contributions to the article

Dear Ukexpat,

You know me from my login name of kmcody001 and you have always been very helpful And courteous when explaining things I should know regarding making changes to the article. It was a couple of years ago that I tried to add a page on the American actor Kathleen Cody, but I'm afraid I was not very good at it even with reading the instructions.

As I think you know, I am the actor Kathleen Cody. The article I started a couple if years ago was just a recitation of sequential years I spent in Show Business outlining chronologically the professional roles I portrayed in Productions. Unfortunately, but luckily for me, there came along an editor after me and made a project of researching the truthfulness of my professional career and the historic impact my career has played in the entertainment industry. All the research and cited resources to support my body of work was incredible to see down on paper. Whoever put together the article as it stands today did a wonderful job in finding and citing the supporting resource material for my work. It was not me who did this, nor was it anyone I knew who put this article together cohesively and truthfully. Whoever did it found out even more information about my career than I remembered since I started in show business when I was 6 months old. As for the changes that I DID go back in later on and change in the article, these were not changes of substance, but rather I added Shows or TV productions that were left out of the article, names of characters I portrayed that were left out of the article, co-stars in the productions That were left out of the article, links between historical productions that I appeared in that are mentioned in a separate Wikipedia article and I added the link between my name and the character I portrayed and the separate article listing the cast but my name was missing (the 1967 David Susskind TV Production of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible", in which I portrayed a significant character role... My name was missing from the cast. One other type change I would have made Is to correct spelling, add co-stars that were not mentioned, or directors. Also added in information concerning Awards a few of the productions were nominated for or in fact won.

So, I hope this explains why you have seen my login name editing the article. While I am the subject matter everything in the article is true and resource supportable. In fact, there are some theatrical productions that are still not mentioned in the article, but on whole it is a true and accurate representation of my career and I swear I made no biased or untruthful changes to the article that was so well researched and written by one of Wikipedia's editors.

I hope this answers any questions you may have. If you need to speak to me further you may reach me at kmcody001@gmail.com

PS - would it be possible to take the notice off the top of the Kathleen Cody (actor) article page if everything meets with your satisfaction in my response here to you?

Thank you for your courtesy, Kmcody001 (Kathleen Cody) 12/11/2012 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kmcody001 (talkcontribs) 20:46, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

COI question

Hi Ukexpat, You sent us a note saying Your edits and your user name would suggest that you are connected with the National Academy of Science. If you are, please refrain from adding NAS links to articles as you have a conflict of interest

I've read your conflict of interest description and I'm asking for clarification. The articles we are linking to are biographies of the subject of the page, almost always written by their close colleagues. The memoirs are freely available with no advertising of any kind associated with them and no financial gain coming from them to the academy or its employees. Please let me know how this is a conflict of interest?

Nasmem (talk) 19:08, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

It is a COI because you work for the organisation and all of your edits are just links to the NAS website. In these circumstances it is always better not to make such edits. You should also disclose your COI on your user page. I am also concerned about your use of "we" - is this the royal "we" or are more than one person sharing your account? If the latter, that is not permitted.--ukexpat (talk) 19:15, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I don't see the problem with this - the links are useful and they improve our articles. (I've also commented here.) SmartSE (talk) 19:33, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your clarification. I've added some information to the User:Nasmem page. I'll also be sure to check more carefully if the memoir is already referenced on the page.Nasmem (talk) 19:39, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
OK thanks - issue resolved.--ukexpat (talk) 19:45, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Ukexpat, thanks for the feedback. I strive not to infringe on the Wikipedia community and when updating to clearly identify myself and intentions in the Talk page for the site I've edited. I will review the links you sent. If I may ask, is it better to make factual changes myself or is it more acceptable to request that of the community through the talk pages or some other way. And may I contact you in the future if I have additional questions about the appropriate way to handle information updates?

ThanksandGiving webmaster (talk) 21:33, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Editors with a COI are encouraged not to edit relevant articles directly, but to make a request on the article's talk page using the {{requested edit}} template. Yes, I am happy to help any time - please leave a message here and I will do my best to respond.--ukexpat (talk) 21:50, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Hector Ruiz image (crosspost from Commons)

Hi ukexpat, I've left you a note on your Commons Talk page, but also wanted to let you know here that I've re-uploaded the image of Hector Ruiz. It is Mr. Ruiz who owns the copyright to this image and he has emailed the permissions desk with permission for its use under a CC-BY-3.0 license. The reason I uploaded the file was that Mr. Ruiz received a reply from OTRS asking for it to be uploaded, and so I included the OTRS pending template. I've now also left a message on the Talk page for the file with the OTRS ticket number, in case that helps.

As you can see, the image is from Mr Ruiz's website. It's been pointed out that the image is also on his profile at computerhope.com, but is appears likely that this site has borrowed the image from Mr. Ruiz's website.

Please let me know if there's anything else I should do here in order to establish that permission is given for the photo's use. Thanks, 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 21:04, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

I think you have done what is required. Assuming that the permission is deemed OK by the OTRS team, the image will be undeleted and tagged accordingly.--ukexpat (talk) 21:06, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, it's just a bit frustrating given that it did have the OTRS pending template on it to start with. I'm not so familiar with how Commons works, do you know if it's normal to delete a photo if copyright issues are suspected even if there's OTRS pending? 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 21:28, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Wikipedia/Wikimedia takes copyvios very seriously so the admin probably erred on the side of caution and deleted. Don't worry, there is no hurry.--ukexpat (talk) 21:32, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, that does seem like what must have happened. And I readily admit to being a bit of a worry-wart, haha. I was concerned OTRS would come to look at it and decide, hey no file, never mind then! Thanks for your help, have a super weekend. 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 21:52, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

BRACE

Can you please explain why the BRACE article you deleted is too promotional? I don't agree with that at all, it is simply a statement of fact and history.

It's true that I handle their PR, but as a charity raising money for dementia I don't see why that is an issue. If you look at other charities in this sector you will see a very similar format. Why is BRACE different?

Please can you give me the information I require so we can get this online asap.

Regards,

Alistair — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alistairclay (talkcontribs) 15:13, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Alistair, I did not delete the article, I am not an admin. I tagged it for deletion and User:RHaworth deleted it. I do not have access to the deleted text (only admins have that user right) but from my recollection it was too promotional in tone. Please note that you clearly have a WP:COI and as such you are strongly advised not to create the article - it is almost impossible for COI users to maintain the necessary neutral point of view. A charity raising money for dementia is a fine thing, but Wikipedia is not the place to be promoting it. If you want to take this further, you can do so by contacting User:RHaworth or at WP:REFUND.--ukexpat (talk) 15:22, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback, very useful.
I understand that I cannot post now so I will address that. However there are thousands of charities listed on Wikipedia so why not this one?
Best,
Alistair — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alistairclay (talkcontribs) 15:26, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
How do I contact RHaworth? I can't see any link to his talk page?
Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alistairclay (talkcontribs) 15:33, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
There is no rule against articles about charities, but, like any other article, they have to adhere to Wikipedia policies and guidelines, particularly WP:ORG, WP:RS and WP:SPAM. I am sure there are non-adhering articles about charities, and in due course they will be reviewed and either edited to be within the guidelines or deleted. There is no deadline. You can contact User:RHaworth at User talk:RHaworth.--ukexpat (talk) 15:39, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

We noticed though that when you edited Neil Chalmers, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ken MacDonald (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Arby's Edits

Hello Friend,

I saw the bo dietl commercial on TV for arbys and its seemed like relevant info to add to the arbys page - can you please let me know what I am doing wrong?

Thanks so much for your help, ChrisArbyys2012 (talk) 16:41, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

We don't need details of every advertising campaign if they are not notable. If the campaign or its characters (as Flo's case) become notable, it can be added to the article.--ukexpat (talk) 16:44, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Nauseated

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at Wikipedia:External links/Noticeboard#Facebook ad nauseum, is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

Do not refactor others' talk page comments, no matter how much their niggling errors get under your obsessive-compulsive skin. Mesconsing (talk) 16:31, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

And why don't you read WP:DTTR? A simple, polite message without the template would have sufficed.--ukexpat (talk) 20:56, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
I have. Have you?
"This essay contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. Essays may represent widespread norms or minority viewpoints. Consider these views with discretion. Essays are not Wikipedia policies or guidelines.

...those who receive a template message should not assume bad faith regarding the user of said template. The editor using the template may not be aware how familiar the user is with policy, or may not themselves consider the template use rude. They may also simply be trying to save time by avoiding writing out a lengthy message that basically says the same thing as the template, which is, after all, the purpose of a template. Alternatively, the editor using the template may have never read this essay, and they may not have considered whether placing templates on the talk pages of regular editors is problematic.
