Deleting pages

UKexpat, I appreciate that you're a whizz at Wiki but I don't think its encouraging to new people to delete their work without giving time for them to respond to the notices raised such as "notability". Pages are works in progress. It takes time to develop and raise the necessary information to note that a page is notable. I have found many examples of academic centres that have their own pages, starting with all under the Kennedy School of Government. I understand the concept of proving notability but deleting pages immediately does not give one a chance. I note that you deleted and redirected another page that had been on Wiki for several years. Having just joined I hardly see this as a community experience but rather a heavy handed mechanism of imposing someone else's will. I spoke about the notability of the pages to another old hand who advised on how to adapt it and had the courtesy of leaving it up there for this process to work itself through. I have also started a conversation on the general topic of notability of academic centres and whether they should be separate pages or not. To simply delete someone's work without bothering to engage in a discussion is just contrary to everything I thought wikipedia was about and has, quite frankly, put me off. I haven't "deleted" anything, I have redirected to the college article. If sources can be found that demonstrate the notabiliy of these sub-institutes (please use the talk pages of the redirected pages to discuss) the redirects can be undone. – ukexpat (talk) 16:32, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

How can others contribute to the development of a page and improve the information supporting its notability if you've hidden it from being publicly accessible? Many pages have the large notice at the top notifying of its need for improvement and the community contributes as they come across knowledge, hence pages are improved. I just did that for a few pages with the banners calling for contributions. The banners had been there for one and a half and two years. I thought that this was what Wikipedia was about. I went and bought a book today to contribute to the notability of the pages that you had commented were not notable. Why would I bother now to make the effort if after every move I see you over my shoulder judging whether its notable? You should leave pages up and YOU should start a discussion on whether it should be redirected so that others can continue to contribute and eventually make a community decision. I had such an experience with Wiki, which I can call my good experience, and I thanked those who were kind enough to make the effort to discuss pages rather than heavy handedly act upon one person's judgement--everything that is not wikipedia.--Ddragovic (talk) 16:55, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Dr. Hossein Ghadimi

Hi and thank you for answering my query. I don't believe Dr. Ghadimi is looking to post his CV. He made some break throughs in laboratory studies that he wants to pass on. All articles are published but not available on line. Wikipedia is beyond me, I am his personal assistant and trying to help him out. Any suggestions? List of name changes?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Over the past couple of days, I have been doing some research and have come across several articles about people who have legally changed their names (Metta World Peace, Muhammad Ali, etc.). I got curious and went to the article on name changes, where a couple of others were mentioned. Most of that article is about the process and legality in various countries, though.

Would a list of people who have legally changed their names be appropriate for Wikipedia, either on that page or as a stand-alone? It would, of course, be limited to people who already have articles, and only for those who have made legal name changes (not pseudonyms, stage names or nicknames).

I appreciate your input.

Michael, thanks for the message. I don't see any reason why that would not be a viable list - the inclusion criteria are simple and I think it would meet the requirements of WP:LIST. I suggest that you create a user space draft (in a user subpage) first so you can take your time developing it. Let me know if you need help creating a subpage. Sandbox use

Hello Ukexpat,

I'm mystified about how to develop an article over a period of days without saving it so that it becomes availabe to the world before its time. When I've tried using a sandbox, the Save button says clicking it makes it available. What gives? I need several days of development time. How does taht work? Many thanks... You can create your own sandbox at, say, User:July5ly/Sandbox (click on the redlink to open in edit mode then click save). However, there are no private spaces on Wikipedia, so your sandbox will be accessible to and editable by anyone (if they know where it is). It will not however be deleted unless it contains copyright violations or blatantly promotional material. Hope this helps. – ukexpat (talk) 18:11, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

This all goes back to the permission. Commons will not accept images that are released for use only on Wikipedia, it has to be for all purposes or not at all, see Commons licensing for details. So if the copyright owner does not want to release it for all purposes, the image cannot be uploaded to Commons. – ukexpat (talk) 19:23, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Falcon and Magluta

i wrote an article called, 'falcon and magluta', which you "edited" or worse (i cant say vandalized because its against diki rules, even though i and others think otherwise). anyway, i need your answer to a question. on that article, one of the headings was, 'Rise to Power'. you changed it to 'Rise'. why did you do this considering that falcon and magluta rose to power when everyone knows that billionaire drug lords are powerful. you dont become a billionaire without becoming powerful. why does the heading, 'Rise to Power,' worry you so much that you had to change it? i'm of italian descent. i noticed that many editors and admins have some ethno-centric/racist views. i would like to know if you carry such views considering how you "edited" my article in such a manner. what you said makes no sense. the heading, 'rise to power' is not complicated or long, just 3 words. how is it not simple? there are other wiki articles with much complicated and longer headings.. heres an example of an article out of a million such articles: Einstein - in this article about einstein, there are these headings: 2.2 Thermodynamic fluctuations and statistical physics and 2.3 General principles postulated by Einstein now, why dont you shorten these as well since its your job as an admin or editor? for example, why dont you make the 2nd heading more simple as in, 'Einstein's General Princliples'? i would like to read your excuse on this one since youre not giving any good reasons. i got my theory as to why youre doing this, but i want to read your answer first.74.108.161.48 (talk) 19:34, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

That was my reason and I strongly object to any implication that my motives were otherwise. I have not looked at the Einstein article or thousands of others that may not comply with MOS, but if you look at any of the many hundreds of articles that I have cleaned up in accordance with MOS, you will see that I am 100% consistent in my approach. I'm unsure legally how far we have to go back confirming the legitimacy of the copyright. Dogs Against Romney has this photo posted on their website, and they granted Wikipedia the right to use it under a Creative Commons CC0 1.0 license. I know that Dogs Against Romney obtained the photo from the Boston Globe, which has the same photo on their website. The Boston Globe says that they obtained the photo from Jane Romney.Debbie W. 05:40, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Help with restoring images removed from an entry

Hello - you've been helpful in the past, so I thought that I'd ask for your assistance again. I've contacted the person who manages the robot that flagged images on a Wiki entry for removal, but I'm not sure if he's going to be able to help restore the images to their rightful place on the entry - please read the following correspondance -

Regarding removal of images from the Karl Ferris Wiki entry

Hello - I was notified that you, on behalf of Wikimedia, have temporarily removed images of the artist's work from his Wiki entry. Can you please explain why this was done? Do you need help in verifying his copyrights? I have been a dealer of his photography for 6 years and a collector of his works for over 20 and would be more than happy to help you verify his copyrights so that you can restore these images. What sort of proof do you need that he created/owns these images? He has been credited with being the photographer/designer of EVERY image you've removed - you can verify that yourself simply by looking at the production credits for each of the album cover images you've removed (you can find these credits listed on sites such as artistdirect.com). He has also been producing and selling fine art prints of these images for over 20 years. While he might not have the merchandising rights (those being owned by the record companies), US and International copyright law allows him to show his images as examples of the works of art he is selling. You will find his works being sold at galleries all over the world, including mine (rockpopgallery.com), St. Paul's Gallery in the UK (stpaulsgallery.com) and San Francisco Art Exhange (sfae.com). Please let me know what else you might need to restore these images to this artist's entry. Thank you for your time and attention. Hi Rockpop; I didn't delete any images, someone else did that, my bot just notified you about it. Well, as to permissions - to sit on Wikipedia the images need to be licensed in a way that permits both commercial reuse and derivative works. Images that belong to another individual must be released by them; the simplest way to verify this permission is to get them to send an email to permissions-en@wikipedia.org. Hello - Karl sent me a note and said that he has tried to notify the right people to restore these images. He owns the images and controls the licenses, so what else (other than a letter from Karl) would he need to provide, and who must he provide it to? He contacted me for help as he seemed unable to notify the right people to restore the images to his entry. Please advise - thanks!

No one is in charge of "curating the article". The process for communicating permissions is set out at WP:CONSENT so I would advise Mr Ferris to follow that process. Wow, you have a lot of banners. That is something I need to figure out!

Ukexpat: I don't know if you have similar feelings on this topic or have even thought about it. I hope so! Wikipedia has beautiful graphics. It would be nice if those graphics had open-source, public-domain software. Let me try to explain this. Let's say you just found a beautiful graphic animation in a field in which you are interested. And, you know how to program. You wonder where the last person left off, and where you might program to improve the graphic. But, there is no source code. You are faced with starting over with your program. That's not so bad. But, typically, graphics animations have assumptions, even if they are based on laws of physics. There is always something that comes up, and one must make assumptions or approximations. So, I would suggest that whatever is over on Commons that makes it through to the encylopedia be fully open. Source code and nothing less. This would be a massive effort. I do not want to propose such an idea as a newbie. However, I have already picked some graphic animations that I would like to rewrite and place in the PD. This also helps to protect the WMF from editors who have been a bit too generous and do not know they might be involved in a licensing or a copyvio situation. Written from scratch, our animated gifs would be PD, transparent, and available for improvement. I also noticed that some of these animations violate NOR, because they have implicit assumptions beyond referenced equations. This is not the fault of the programmer - it is just implicit to programming itself. If we talk about students who are readers of the encyclopedia, then we have even more reason to move forward on such an "open-code" project: Students are the most likely people who would check and improve our sophisticated animated graphics. Sending a new article

Thanks for taking the time to respond but I'm still baffled. I have read Article Wizard but somehow have missed how to transmit a new article to Wikipedia for consideration: for example can I write it and email the finished piece as an attachment and to what address do I send it? There is no way to e-mail the article, you have to create it by writing the text in Wikipedia's interface. So you will have to copy it from the application where you have written it and paste it into the article wizard at the appropriate step. Just follow the Wizard's instructions and it should be fine. An alternative would be to paste the text into a sandbox in your user space -- User:Jackclinton/Sandbox - click on this redlink and paste the text, then click the "save" button. I saw that you oppose this entry/page move, as you felt it was promotional. I worked hard to ensure this was factually-based only, and used all the other advertising agencies listed as a template, so as to avoid this specifically. Would you be willing to offer suggestions on how to modify this entry, so that it could be listed with the other advertising agencies, already on Wikipedia? Since there are myriad agencies already listed on Wikipedia, I'm hopeful that we can make the necessary tweaks to ensure this listing is as it should be. I'd be very grateful for any assistance/advice you would be willing to share with me on this matter, and look forward to hearing from you!

Wolff Olins

Hi Ukexpat,

I left some messages on the Wolff Olins talk page a month or so ago but haven't gotten any responses. Instead of trying to make changes to the page myself, I'd simply like to start a conversation to expand the page as the wikipedia community sees fit (since the completion rating is still quite low). I tried to put in a "tag" to bring the question to people's attention but it hasn't seemed to work. Is there a better way to get the word out? Or is it simply a waiting game? In your mind, what types of things would make the page more complete?

Also, I may be a bit biased but as of now, I feel like the page doesn't seem to capture the wider reputation of Wolff Olins: "unorthodox" or "non-standard." Yes, calling the firm "controversial" starts to get at the idea, but I know that alot of the company's work has been praised for being adventurous/boundary-pushing in a positive way as well. (see Tate, (RED), PwC). The Tea Leaf - Issue One - Recent news from the Teahouse

• Metrics are out from week one. Week one showed that the need for Teahouse hosts to invite new editors to the Teahouse is urgent for this pilot period. It also showed that emailing new users invitations is a powerful tool, with new editors responding more to emails than to talk page templates. We also learned that the customized database reports created for the Teahouse have the highest return rate of participation by invitees. Check out the metrics here and see how you can help with inviting in our Invitation Guide.
• A refreshed "Your hosts" page encourages experienced Wikipedians to learn about the Teahouse and participate. With community input, the Teahouse has updated the Your hosts page which details the host roles within the Teahouse pilot and the importance that hosts play in providing a friendly, special experience not always found on other welcome/help spaces on Wikipedia. It also explains how Teahouse hosts are important regarding metrics reporting during this pilot. Are you an experienced editor who wants to help out? I can't find the "contest the speedy deletion" on the page. I was asked by the Society for Socialist Studies to create a W page for them. I simply took information from the website that they asked me to. Why is this a problem? You can even email Elaince Coburn at her email on the Journal website and ask her yourself.

How is telling the truth vandalism?

If a person (who admits to doing so) creates a page about themselves with little qualification to do so and I edit saying they did so amount to vandalism? Is Wikipedia about truth or pandering to inflated egos?
