Deletion Nominations

I am trying to nominate (and re-nominate in some cases) deletion for articles of people related to Barack Obama that are noty notable. There is already some support for deletion. Please consider weighing in on the talk pages of these articles: Barack Obama, Sr., Ann Dunham, Maya Soetoro-Ng, Madelyn and Stanley Dunham, and Sarah Obama. These are all biographies. Peer review request

Hi Ukexpat, I've submitted an article for peer review, and read that editors are "strongly encouraged to seek out other Wikipedians for comment". I've had a look at the volunteers page and you stood out because 1) you're a copyeditor and 2) you're British! The article is on the Sindy doll, and I thought that as you're from Britain, you may have at least heard of the doll, and you can ensure the article is written in British English. (It's currently in Australian English, which I hope is close enough to British for few mistakes in that regard!) No worries if you don't have time or aren't interested. :) The peer review is here. Thanks, Somno (talk) 08:54, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Vectropy

I have expanded the Vectropy page to hopefully better meet the requirements. I apologize for my repeated unsatisfactory edits, I am relatively new to Wikipedia and thought I'd add this as it seems to be gaining popularity in the upcoming WPF/Silverlight developments. The article is now substantially more detailed than many similar ones (e.g. a large number of other graphics editors in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Graphics_software_stubs). I hope the new page meets your expectations.

Thanks! Trucelan —Preceding unsigned comment added by Trucelan (talkcontribs) 20:22, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Anteater Edit You Undid

You've reverted an edit I made to this:

"Anteaters are the four mammal species of the suborder Vermilingua[1] commonly known for eating ants and termites.[2] The name is also colloquially applied to the aardvark, the numbat, the echidna, and the pangolin. Together with the sloths, they comprise the order Pilosa."

That phrasing can be misunderstood as including aardvark, numbat, echidna, pangolin in Pilosa.

My edit corrected that potential confusion without changing any factual information -- only prose presentation -- so your reversion seems to be an odd thing to do etiquette-wise and not providing any factual correction or other benefit.

Switching back. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.216.16.147 (talk) 04:18, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Archiving setup

Good news: it looks fine. Automatic archiving of all topics inactive for >7 days will be automatically archived to User talk:Ukexpat/Archive 1 and then to subsequently numbered pages once the previous one reaches 250K in size. You already have the archive box, so everything should be set up perfectly; just wait for MiszaBot III's cycle to begin, and everything should be done automatically! Black African English people

A deleted this category as it is basically rubbihs. It needs completing or deleting all together, it should include all people listed in the List of black Britons article, as these are all of Black African descent. There are millions of black people in the UK, and hundreds if not thousands of famous ones with Wikipedia articles.

Explain this to me

How is improving Carolina Kostner's article vandalism?

speedy delete

You marked easylearning for speedy deletion as spam or advertising. The program is recognised by the UN Global Compact Initiative so is not simply a product, but is delivering education to developing countries. The wikipedia E-learning page lists many similar companies, although none seemingly with the same objective as easylearning, under the Proprietary subhead. I would argue easylearning, as a program with clear social responsibilty elements, is also worthy of inclusion. I have reworded in case it sounded too advertisement-like and added UNIDO and UNGC links. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rtm1969 (talkcontribs) 21:19, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Re: Speedy deletion of Park Resorts

You recently contacted me about the speedy deletion of the aforementioned article. I have no attachment to this article and I see no reason why I'd want to prevent its deletion. The article had been hijacked by Park Resorts employees, so became biased. I believe another editor has reverted the article to the last unbiased revision, so it may now not be considered criteria for deletion. I don't often deal with the deletion system so I'm not sure whether to tag the now-reverted version or let it be deleted, which it had long deserved. Regards /Marbles (talk) 21:28, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Request for Peer Review help

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.

1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...

2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.

3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.

Thanks again for your help and in advance for any assistance with the backlog. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:58, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi there,

I'm contesting the "speedy deletion" of the European Newspaper Publishers Association website.

You claim it "promotes" an entity, when the page is designed only to inform. We are a non-profit trade association, not seeking revenues but have created this page, modelled on the World Association of Newspapers page (of which we are a member) to highlight our industry and activities.

Please let me know what information justifies its supposed "speedy deletion", all the statistics are true and verifiable.

Best,

Hi, Ukexpat

Wow, I never saw so many little wikiwidgets describing various aspects of a user as on your page.

Then again, I haven't looked at many user pages, since I spend most of my time on Wikipedia trying to improve articles I come across.

By the way, I'm American, but totally agree with the British (English?) (U.K.?) custom of placing commas and period *outside* of close-quotes -- unless logic dictates otherwise. (Your wikiwidget for this, however, shows a question mark following a close-quote, and to the best of my knowledge this is a typical American custom as well -- just in case you were wondering.)

Noticed your username because I was reading the article about bdelloid animals, after reading Olivia Judson's typically terrific article about same in the New York Times. (In case you're interested, see http://judson.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/03/the-weird-sisters/index.html .)Daqu (talk) 05:37, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

I knew that would be your reply. But in this case "the other stuff" is valid. But I agree - wait for the decision. I expect it will be keep for the reasons I have given. Btline (talk) 19:54, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

I THOUGHT I DID EVERYTHING RIGHT, BUT I GUESS I MUST HAVE MADE A MISTAKE SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY BECAUSE I WAS JUST NOTIFIED WHEN I LOGGED IN THAT THE ACCOUNT I JUST CREATED WAS FLAGGED FOR SPEEDY DELETION. IF YOU COULD GET BACK TO ME AND LET ME KNOW WHAT I COULD DO TO MAKE MY WIKIPEDIA CORRECT SO IT COULD STAY IT WOULD MAKE MY DAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!

On deletion of Fly Communications article

I'm trying to get the article on Fly Communications published.

I appreciate the idea that Wikipedia is not the place to advertise. However, how does one walk the fine line to report on progress in successful techniques of advertising. I think this kind of progress has important intellectual value, just as the recognition of how our individual tastes for "nostalgia" are cultivated ... yes, it only seems like advertisers use this "nostaglia" theory, but it does reflect something inherent in human nature. Likewise, the firm has successfully combined these two conflicting approaches (direct marketing, which involves a call-to-action, and branding, which involves an emotional connection). And I believe that Fly was one of the first firms to combine these successfully.

Thus, I believe it is worthy of publication.

Regarding, the idea that the article in question is "advertising" something, this is not the case. The article does not "advertise" any product or service, but the article is about the advertising industry and a company that has pioneered a particular approach.

An easy way to demonstrate that this article is NOT advertising is to pretend the article were about a firm that were to pioneer the combination of baking soda (used by bakers) and vinegar (used by salad chefs) to produce a chemical result that could be used with childrens' Science Fair projects illustrating volcanoes and their lava flow. The fact that is has become popular does not diminish the experimentation and success with combining features of separate disciplines (bakers vs. salad chefs).

Considering that the article is not intended to advertise, what kind of improvements do you suggest to make it suitable? Clearly, Wikipedia has articles on companies and other companies in the advertising industry ... maybe a little explanation of improvement would help me make the article suitable to Wikipedia standards.

FYI, I am reachable at [personal info removed by User:Ukexpat]. Thanks in advance for your suggestions and help.

No fair hearing on speedy deletion of Nova Development

You deleted Nova Development, with no opportunity for a fair hearing.

Another party had moved for deletion --on an earlier ocassion.

I performed exhaustive effort in composing the article, from varied resources. That party had re-instated my article.

Yet, you have executed a speedy delete on the article. This is an abuse of power, and it is an apparent circumnaventing of the standard rules for deletion.

I will try to get redress (restoration) of the article via arbitrators.Dogru144 (talk) 00:06, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry if I have done something wrong here but I have only stated fact and it is a very serious problem two which wyeth and the FDA have "Never" done any research on and based on my own and others I've spoken to regarding to high a dosage of Effexor XR's being prescribed by ,I dont know how many doctors around the world probably contibutes to half the suiceds that take place by People that are on this medication!!!

I have been researching this drug now for 5 years and Venlofaxine is the most deadliest of SSRI's in "All" the antidepresents in the world today..

I only want to let people know ,if they do some research as to why they feel so depressed when thiey've been taking them for the initial 2 week body execptance period that they aren't suffering from depression by thier own means but rather by the Effexors as they are taking to high a dose ...Doctors will Not admitt to this,My own phycision agrees with me as do many chemists i've spoken with and it coincides with research that has been done around the worl especially in Europe but as for western Countries ,we dont seem to care what happens to patients ..

Thats all I was trying to do ...Be informative and hopefully it would encourage others to look a bit more aswell and possibly add more light to them ..

Again i'm very sorry ,,you can scap my membership ,if you so wish,But I shouldn't have expected anything less as in general ,people just dont want to know the truth, do they .. Again ,many thanks Stuart Haynes —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stu963 (talkcontribs) 16:44, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

CAMICO Mutual Insurance

You tagged CAMICO Mutual Insurance for speedy deletion as blatant spam. I decided that the company was notable and that the article should be rewritten to make it less like an advertisement. Often a bad article about a notable topic can be salvaged. I see that the article is now being actively worked on by the original author. --Eastmain (talk) 18:32, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

The GlobalVote

Hello,

I noticed that you nominated the GlobalVote page for speedily deletion because of advertising. However, the page was not meant to be an advertisement for anything. The GlobalVote page that I created was just a description of the organization itself along with the global resolutions that the organization posted. The GlobalVote is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. I have seen other wikipedia pages with descriptions of other nonprofit organizations (i.e. Lawyers Alliance for New York) that have not been deleted, so I do not understand why the GlobalVote page was deleted. Can anything be done in order for the page not to be deleted? Globalvote (talk) 18:51, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

You have marked the article about this author with the tag "unreferenced". But the sources of all information are explicitly given at the links' section. As far as I could realise from Wikipedia:Citing sources and Wikipedia:Verifiability, attribution is required for direct quotes and for material that is challenged or likely to be challenged. There's nothing to be challenged in this article, nor direct quotes - only biographical facts which could be easily found at both sources given, one self-published and the other independent and reliable. What kind of references you want to be added to the article? Andrei Romanenko (talk) 09:54, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

I would like to ask, humbly and very nicely, that you consider removing your deletion request for the Prospect Research article. This is my first attempt and I am trying very hard to learn a whole new language and set of rules. The original nominator for deletion used Baltant Advertising as a reason. No company information is in the article and I am consciously trying to keep this from being commercial.

The prospect research industry is made up, predominately, of full-time employees of non-profit organizations around the world.

Specific references to coverage of the profession include:

Media coverage: 1) Finding that millionaire next door: using research to find the donors (Non-profit Times May 1, 2007)

2) Prospect research and personal solicitations.- Fund Raising Management Feb 1, 1990

I am not writing an advertisement or resume. Also, see John Gottman - I wanted to write something similar to that. What is different about his page and mine? Also, is there someone who can help me write this article so that it can stay on wikipedia?

You are too twitchy, my good man. :) --Marcwiki9 (talk) 00:54, 21 June 2008 (UTC) But seriously, dude, take at look at these words from the speedy deletion page "Contributors sometimes create articles over several edits, so try to avoid deleting a page too soon after its creation if it appears incomplete." It seems to me that you nom for speedy about 15 seconds after I created the page. That would be a vio of the spirit of the speedy deletion system. If you are sitting around waiting for new pages to tag for speedy, then you should at least wait a couple of hours for the page to be finished. Why did you tag it so fast? --Marcwiki9 (talk) 02:58, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

speedy delete about the global vote

Dear Ukepat,

I would like to offer my edits to the speedy deleted page of the GlobalVote, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Globalvote

I think I made the description to look like more a non-profit organization instead of a business advertisement. Below is the text, if that should help.

Thanks, Wayne ...

The GlobalVote[1], based in New York, NY with an office in the Netherlands, is a [non-profit organization] which aims to gather the opinions of the international online community on the most urgent and latest international issues and to educate and inform the online voting community about these pertinent issues.[2]

The GlobalVote's primary initiative involves the international community, grouped by their nationality, voting on resolutions. Each voting result will be applied to four varied voting procedures, including proportional representation and the voting procedures of the U.N. Security Council.[3]

Prata (Minas Gerais)

Dear Sir, I was working at Prata´s page in English as a favour to my boss who is a person born and very participative in Prata´s politics, economy, society and life. He called me today to ask what had happened to the page cause the articles had disappeared. Well, now I know what happened and I won´t discuss about it. I just need the page done (and this was what I was trying to do, in spite of the rare time I had to work on it and unexperience in these kind of thing)as it is in portuguese (You may see the references looking for Prata(Minas Gerais)in portuguese language as I had done). For instance I won´t work on it cause I´m very upset with the disappearance of the work I´ve made up to last friday. I thank you if you can contribute constructing the page again. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Katia Teixeira (talkcontribs) 19:17, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Wale

I'm trying to edit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wale_%28rapper%29

it's supposed to say: He grew up on Peabody Street in Northwest DC and moved to Largo, Maryland as a teenager

Here is the reference for it http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/19/AR2007101900655_3.html

Hello 24.41.28.89, you had some problems with the layout, so it looked like vandalism what you had done. I modified it so it looks better. --Cyfal (talk) 22:36, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Hello. This concerns the Glenn Watkins page. The problem with having "is the" in front of "Earl V. Moore Professor Emeritus of Music History and Musicology" is that Glenn isn't the only "Earl V. Moore Professor Emeritus" at Michigan. I'm not a regular Wikipedian, but I do write for the Encyclopaedia Britannica (plus I am a former student of Glenn's, which is why I decided to clean-up his page). This isn't a big problem, but I thought you might want to consider how the change reads. Thanks----

Glenn Watkins page

Sorry, I didn't give my previous message a heading (I'm new at this). Even though I added the four tildes, my IP address didn't come up. Just look at the IP addresses in the series of recent changes (last few days) to the Watkins page, and you'll find me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.101.160.137 (talk) 22:32, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Watkins edit

Thanks for the revert. I blanked the talk page thinking that's what I was supposed to do, because the entry was no longer a stub, nor does it follow a Wikipedia template (it hasn't since someone dumped his U Michigan bio directly onto the page)--it now looks like something from EB, except for the books section, which they do in a paragraph rather than bulleted form (I prefer the bullets). I suppose I misread the "stub" instruction page . . .

If you want to do musicologists, you might want to keep track of the Susan McClary entry. It has suffered from vandalism of a hurtful, personal nature. I don't have my own Wiki page yet, but one is surely coming, and I think I'll tag myself for lack of notability, quick deletion, and all those other good things to avoid getting smeared. As academics, when students google us the Wikipedia page pops right up, and you really don't want potential students seeing some of these "edits." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.101.160.137 (talk) 03:42, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Couple Questions For You..................

I just logged into my account and looked in my contributions section and noticed a "request for speedy deletion" in there. I am going to send this same message to user Iridescent (if I can figure out how to find his talk page as I am new to wikipedia). It was Iridescent who stepped up and said the entry about me is far from a speedy deletion article so it would be locked in here on wikipedia and I'm pretty sure it was you who fixed up the article in the proper format for me.....which I was very thankful for.....as noted in the email I sent both of you. It would mean the world to me to have this issue corrected as it was by user Iridescent before. I also received your email (I think it was you) about adding additional materials....references etc. Just started doing that today for the first time, since I never paid any attentioin to this stuff until now...wish I did. Off the top of my head I appeared in the video, "Body of Work" that was shown on MSNBC about women in wrestling featuring April Hunter. I didn't have any speaking parts but I was shown close up doing pushups, walking around, drills, and being around the ring. You can view this close up photo of me from MSNBC on my myspace page in the pro wrestling album....the pic with the official MSNBC logo in the bottom of it. I don't know where one would place that information on my page. I'll try to brainstorm and think of some other videos etc.

Thank you. I hope the other editor may edit the page again. Thanks for your cooperation. Katia —Preceding unsigned comment added by Katia Teixeira (talkcontribs) 16:19, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

About Prata, Minas Gerais

Dear Sir,

I was reading the talks and I realize that there was a lack about the reason of the edit I´d made. So, I´d like to explain the importance of having the page Prata, Minas Gerais at Wikipedia in english (as it is in portuguese and two other languages). The importance of the municipality is specially caused by the discovery of fossils of the dinosaur named Maxakalisaurus topai at that region in 2006, largely published at the world wide web, and still remains many other discoveries such as paintings and bones dated from the earlier centuries. I´d like to let you know that I don´t even know personally the region (everything I could learn about it was from notices, pictures and internet - all very safe)as I live in Rio de Janeiro. But as I told you before, my boss was born there and still is a very participative person who has all interest in the improvement of that region and is putting on his efforts and heart in order to the development of that region. I thank you again for your cooperation. best wishes, Katia Teixeira (talk) 20:11, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Referencing new research

Hello there,

I am very new to this. In fact this article on Colin Hampden-White is my first! How do I reference research on a person when the research I have been doing is interviewing people who have worked with Colin Hampden-White and are reliable and whose positions within the media are significant, such as the picture editor of the Financial Times Jamie Hann?

There is very little out there as a reference to him at this stage as he is becoming well known as people buy his work as an artist. Is a shortlist of some of his more important commissions worth putting up? He is also having two solo exhibitions in the autumn (dates tba). I presume they need to have been, before they are listed on here?

How do I list original research, such as dates he studied at university, or in the future his marriage, (he is getting married at Westminster Abbey with a reception at the house of lords on the 20th of September this year)?

Any advice would be most helpful.

Hi,

Thanks for the help. I have Scotsman and FT articles with Colin Hampden-White's photography which can be scanned and added as a jpeg, but other than that there is no direct record, especially online, of employment. The articles are online, but without the photography. This is a common problem with articles online, they have very little photography.

There is a mass of printed work by Colin Hampden-White, should I simply reference publications, articles and dates of articles? Can I simply list the publications in which he has been published?

Where the information has been sought by word of mouth, what would constitute a reliable reference? I mean, the picture editor of the FT is hardly likely to lie. After all, information and facts in biographies which are referenced and quoted have to come from somewhere or information collected from someone. How is this type of information is placed in an article, or is it simply left with no reference?

Again, any help is very greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for the direction and suggestions - I will add some website links to the references. I read that in some of the guidelines and actually forgot to go back and do that. I Appreciate your guidance. Oaklandishgirl (talk) 16:27, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Dear Sir, As you asked me to do here are the translation I´ve done for Prata you can also have more information about the dinosaur looking for "maxakalisaurus topai" in wikipedia or google. You´ll able to see the size of that discovery in many languages. I must thank you again. In fact, today I was ordered to redo the page again and I`m very glad to have you helping me.
