Block request for latest Ronosen sock

Hi Tiptoety, could you block and tag User:Platypusbeak, who was confirmed as the latest Ronosen sock here: Wikipedia:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/Ronosen? Thanks, priyanath talk 18:41, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Blanket IP range block issue

Hey sparky, while no one appreciates the need for blocking morons on occasion more than I do, you managed to block just about every IP at a state health lab while attempting to block one user named Sumerophile. While I don't know if he works here (or is on campus), I fail to see how blocking legitimate users (like myself) who don't always want to login to make a quick change or comment helps Wikipedia. Not for nothing, but it also makes hard to bring this issue up with anyone when the IP range block makes it impossible to leave a note explaining the situation. Might want to take a look at your block and use selective IP targeting instead of the internet equivalent carpet bombing. Thanks. Carpe queso. (KeeperOTD (talk) 21:13, 7 August 2008 (UTC))

Hi there, I would first off like to apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing you but I also would like you to see this request for checkuser. Unless my blocking of this range has resulted in your inability to edit via this account (which it appears you can) there is not much I can do, and at this time I am unwilling to undo the range block. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 22:01, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Hello Tiptoety. I am not a real editor of WikiPedia, (but a happy user) I am really asking this for several grad students who have complained and are blocked from editing. Many students seem to edit anonymously, as is their right according to wikipedia's own rules. As things stand now, they can't even create accounts if they wanted to, and I don't have time to do this for everybody. Your attempt to resolve the Sumerophile issue seems to have inadvertantly blocked a very large range of IPs. You say 144.92.0.0/16 but somehow it seems to be blocking more than that. It appears to be blocking everything starting with 144.92... Maybe that is what you meant to do? At any rate that is blocking a vast number of users right now. (Basied on a WHOIS search, something like 255,255 Madison IPs) That is too much. This goes past sock-pupet blocking/resolution to greifing on your own part. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AnthroLibrarian (talkcontribs) 17:43, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi there. As a checkuser on the project here, I can certainly attest to the fact that all accounts on that range, except about three, have been created by a seriously disruptive banned editor. All of them. Unfortunately, this measure is necessary given the level of abuse here and we also have to consider protection of the project as well as the hours and hours of our admins' time wasted by this person. It's unfortunate, but you can pretty much blame User:Sumerophile for this. It's a classic case of everyone having to suffer for the abuses of the few. I don't like seeing rangeblocks due to the potential collateral damage entailed and the severity of the action but have to say that 1) Sumerophile caused it, 2) it's a softblock so others can still edit, 3) there are very little edits on this entire range other than by Sumerophile. I strongly recommend not lifting the rangeblock at this time - Alison 01:45, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Alright, you all are the ones who keep it going, so good luck. (AnthroLibrarian)

Regarding your warning

Tiptoety,

This is to kindly inform you that I have placed a detailed clarification on my talk page of the recent reverts on the Hemshin Peoples entry, for which you have posted a warning. I believe there is a misunderstanding here as my recent reverts were in response to a series of unjustified wholesale reverts (taking the entry back to its version almost a year ago, with no discussions or justifications). My edit practices so far are completely in accordance with Wikipedie policies of first proposing, then discussing and then posting. Consequently, I kindly request that you read my response on my talk page and that you remove the warning (or take an action which amounts to that). You might also consider giving some warning to those contributors there who are in direct violation of the wikipedia edit policies. Omer182 (talk) 18:41, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

1 Year of the Collaboration of the Week

Hello again to those of WikiProject Oregon. It is time again for another Collaboration of the Week. The last two weeks were a Stub Improvement Drive, and thank you to those who improved any Stubs.

This week marks the one week anniversary of the COTW, so a brief highlight reel:

  • At least 10 DYKs
  • Three articles passed GA after being listed at COTW
  • Probably around 25 articles started
  • Almost all Top importance articles are now better than Stub class

And now on with our countdown. This week we have two requests, the Willamette Meteorite and Tom McCall. Hopefully we can get both to GA quality. Click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Thank you. Aboutmovies (talk) 09:45, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Block request

Hi there. Can you please block User:HabsMTL? He or she is causing trouble on the List of World Wrestling Entertainment employees article. For the past 2-3 days, he/she has been engaging in edit wars, violating WP:OVERLINK. Okay, I have blocked HabsMTL but understand your behavior is not acceptable either and was close to violating WP:3RR, leaving links to policy in your edit summary does not mean that you can edit war, you need to take it to the talk page and request dispute resolution of the other parties involved do not want to get on the train, yeah? Thanks indeed for your work in monitoring the protection of articles. I notice you've unprotected Handel. I'm not much connected with that article, but could I put in a request that the semiprotect on JS Bach be retained indefinitely. For years, teenage boys doing their school music assignments on this iconic composer (I suspect it's them) have been inserting obscene juvenilia, sometimes blanking the whole article in the process. It's been such a relief to have the article semiprotected over the past ?year. Tony (talk) 03:15, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tony, thanks for brining up your concerns. Let me explain the reason that I unprotected the article, as you are well aware this is a Wiki and as such Wiki's are meant (and created) to be open to editing by who ever wants to, and as such this is one of the founding principles of Wikiedia. So, I at this point I think we give the unprotection a test run and if it does not work I have no issues reprotecting the article, and if you see a increase in vandalism you are more than welcome to report it directly here and I will be happy to protect. Deal? Cheers, Tiptoety talk 03:19, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Unprotecting Poop Deck

You have an amazing faith in human nature. It is not the "length of time" that is important here. WP gets many new imbeciles every day, and one of those imbeciles will look for poop and turn the article on its head again.

"Gosh, that was fun, let's look for cock and shit now!"

You may think it to be worth a try, but it truly is not.

The only solution is permanent semi-protection, otherwise you just encourage the schoolyard to giggle in corners. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 06:43, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Oh, please do not reply using the standard para you have used twice now above. I'm too old to read it three times. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 06:46, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Until I see further evidence of vandalism the article will remain unprotected. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 06:49, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Looks like it's over to you to watch it, then. I'm bored witless with reverting it. I think you are 100% mistaken in unprotecting it, so you can do the work when it needs reprotecting, reverting etc. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 10:20, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Thats fine with me. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 14:33, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Your unprotections

I see that you just unprotected half of Wikipedia (giving the reason "its been long enough, let's give this another try"). Has there been prior discussion about this? Cheers, Face 10:47, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

This is a Wiki, and a Wiki should be open for anyone to edit, at least thats what Wikipedia was founded upon and as such I have been bold in my attempts to maintain that. Tiptoety talk 14:37, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Your continuing unprotections

Oh noes not another one. Just wanted to say good work. I expect half the articles will be locked up again within a week, but there'll be another half that won't need to be. -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:50, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you, it is nice to hear someone appreciate what I just spent the last 4 hours on. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 16:45, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

au contraire!

Got a rule not to revert more than once on a given page per 24 hours. Just checked. Haven't broken it. *wipes brow* --Asdfg12345 17:01, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

No, you have not, be you are darn close. Also, take a look at WP:EDITWAR, it clearly states you can be blocked for edit warring without violating 3RR, so be very very careful and please for the sake of the project instead of spending all that time reverting, discuss it on the talk page. Cheer, Tiptoety talk 17:04, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

I agree with your sentiments.--Asdfg12345 17:06, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Happy cat RFA

I've removed it from the RFA main page. I see no indication the editor wanted it transcluded. As an aside you need to remember to leave the top ---- in place when you transclude RFA's :) [6] Pedro :  Chat  20:23, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok, I guess I just thought that adding the RfA template to their userpage was enough evidence that they wanted it open to be, but clearly not. No worries. Tiptoety talk 20:25, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
I suspect they do, but I'd have asked first and given some helpful hints to see if they really wanted to run. Best to let self noms translude themselves I thinkl. No biggie my friend. Pedro :  Chat  20:30, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Post Deletion

Hello again. Can you please explain why you removed this post? Thanks, ~ Troy (talk) 01:28, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Per WP:BEANS, once the user attempting to attack Wikpedia sees that post he will know he is succeeding and will surely continue. Tiptoety talk 01:30, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Alright ...hey, BTW, are you good with javascript? I need to configure hagger, hagger??, h.a.g.g.e.r, h..a..g..g..e..r and stuff like that on User:Lupin/badwords. I have already added "epic fail" to the list, but I can't seem to add multiple terms. ~ Troy (talk) 01:35, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

And thanks for the response :) ~ Troy (talk) 02:42, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

It is a valid question, though...

Why not just permanently redirect-protect the page? It's not like anyone would ever need to move it, unless they were an admin, and admins can do it anyway. HalfShadow 01:32, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

There is no way to redirect-protect a page. There is a way to move protect a page and it is already set so only admins can move it. Take a look at WP:PROT. Tiptoety talk 01:44, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Tiptoety. I have more than a few pages on my watchlist that require a fairly regular dose of undo due to clear vandalism. User:Folksong

Don't be ridiculous. Did you have an actual reason other than handwaving, knee-jerk assumptions of bad faith, and automatic and unthinking support of Ryan Postlethwaite? A little reading would help. Hint 1: read the deletion log for User talk:Folksong. Hint 2: Read User:Folksong. Not too difficult, really, so I'm sure you can do it. --Calton | Talk 19:59, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Pony

Can you kindly re-protect pony? It was on permanent semi-protection for the same reason many of the other main animal articles are: elementary school kid vandalism on a near-constant basis. On top of that, ponies seem to provoke the same kind of vandal rage that articles on things like Barney the Purple dinosoaur do. Things may be quiet at the moment, but come Back to School time, we are just going to have to reprotect it. I know that there are constant debates about permanently protecting wikipedia articles, but if we are going to continue to protect (and we do protect) cat, dog, horse, cow, etc., pony most certainly needs to be in that category. It won't ever end until this whole type of "tee hee" kid vandalism ends. So thanks in advance if you could restore that protection tag. Thanks. Montanabw(talk) 04:31, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Montanabw, thanks for brining up your concerns. Um, just reverted a vandal a few moments ago. The usual. Check diffs to see. These may only be one or two a day, maybe even just 3-4 week, but they are an ongoing PITA. And 99% of the time it's an IP Yeah, I know the theory on not protecting too much. But playing babysitter gets really old. Do as you see fit, but be so kind as to watchlist this one if you don't decide to restore protection. Montanabw(talk) 03:13, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Oops, the vandalism was to Shetland pony, not pony. I got confused this time. Nonetheless, it's the same basic problem, it's just harder for the kids to find the Shetlands article, so it's hit less. I guess my humble request is still to re-semi-protect Pony. There is some stuff where we just do have to just put up a little speed bump. Thanks. Montanabw(talk) 22:02, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Like I said before, this is a Wiki and Wiki's are meant to be open for editing. Until I see further evidence of vandalism (which might I note that there has been none since my unprotection) I am not willing to re-protect it. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 04:37, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
There was one today. I'll keep you posted unless you already have the article watchlisted. Montanabw(talk) 19:13, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Okay, if it gets out of hand let me know and I will be happy to re-protect it. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 19:14, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Edit warring in Falun Gong articles

User:Dilip rajeev is a Falun Gong practitioner and propagandist with a history of non-NPOV edits, point-pushing, disruptive editing and reverting. He is an unrepentant persistent offender who gives wikipedia a bad name. The last block was for 48 hours - and I am wondering how you came to block him for 55 hours? Ohconfucius (talk) 01:53, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Are you suggesting you feel the block was too short, or do you feel it was too long. I am not really sure what you are getting at here, because either way he is blocked. Tiptoety talk 02:38, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Of course I believe it was too short! But that's just my personal opinion. ;-) Ohconfucius (talk) 08:58, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Tiptoety, I just saw this message from the above user .. I request you to please verify from my edit history that in my edits to this article and related articles I have only attempted to add material of a high quality from sources of central relevance to the subject such as Amnesty, KM reports, and improve the quality of the pertinent articles. I find it sad that an established user like ohconfucius would make these allegations while supporting such edits as made by PCPP. The user PCPP whom he seems to be supporting, has in almost every single edit he has done to the page and related pages attempted to delete or blank out highly sourced material of central relevance to the topic - and every time with a misleading edit summary. You may verify this for yourself from the edit history of the page on organ harvestation or from contribution history of USER:PCPP. My contributions to the article has been positively commented on by other independent editors also. I have attempted to clarify things in greater detail in my post, in response to ohconfucius comments, here.

WP:CHILD

I know you're trying to help, children's best interests and so on, but in the case of tharnton345, please bear in mind that WP:CHILD is not policy, nor a guideline - it's an essay that never reached any kind of consensus or got wide exposure to the Wikipedia community for much comment. In all honesty I think that the rate this is going, tharnton will be blocked anyway for immaturity, edit warring, POV pushing and constant violation of NPA within 3 months. —Vanderdeckenξφ 17:03, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Oh, please read the reason for my deletion seeing as it was not WP:CHILD but instead a ArbCom case. The reason I liked the WP:CHILD on the users talk page was because it provides far more helpful info than the ArbCom case does. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 17:05, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

British Isles

Hello there. Since you gave some advice on the recent problem with [[User:TharkunColl] and an unwise block I made on him, could I ask you to take a look at British Isles, and, in particular, the discussions on Talk:British Isles from Talk:British Isles#Attempt to vary agreed consensus on use of term onwards (over the next few sections.) I find the whole area has become so bogged down with accusations made against people that I withdrew completely from the matter just under a week ago, and yet I see that I am continuing to have accusations made against me. I did protect the article since it was becoming an edit-warring matter (involving TharkunColl as one of the editors), but it seems that this caused problem with one other editor, and the matter is now getting out of hand. I have now unprotected the article to see what happens, and announced that this is my final action on the matter of "British Isles" controversies, since anything I do is now judged as being biased, etc. So it is best to walk away. However, I think the matter needs some attention. Since you unprotected an article that had had edit-warring problems in a related subject (United Kingdom), I wonder if you could take a look over things there? I am largely unavailable for two rather serious and pressing personal matters for the next 10 days at least. Thanks.  DDStretch  (talk) 10:29, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

I've now also unprotected Scotland, which I protected a slightly longer time ago, for exactly the same reasons, involving the same editors, with TharkunColl seemed to me to be "gaming the system" in his edit summaries about taking it to the 3rr limit for edit warring.  DDStretch  (talk) 10:47, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

User:Dodgechris

Hi - as the blocking admin of User:Dodgechris, I hope it's all right if I ask your advice? Although a checkuser request found the two editors to be unrelated, it seems clear to me that Dodgechris is now editing as User:Notdoppler. The second account become active following the second indef block of the Dodgechris account - heavily editing Coronation Street articles and almost nothing else, showing the same contribution history of redirecting, unredirecting, merging and unmerging Coronation Street character articles so often it's near impossible to keep up, as well as an odd dislike for the Molly Compton article, threatening to take it to AfD - something the Dodgchris account did twice in two months... Basically what I'm asking is, what should the next step be here? Is it still possible to open a sockpuppet case despite the checkuser request stating the accounts were unrelated? I have extremely little doubt the two editors are one and the same, and it's just frustrating to deal with all over again. Many thanks. Frickative 19:45, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

You can still open a sock puppet case even of the CheckUser cam back unrelated, to do so fallow the directions at WP:SSP. Cheers, Tiptoety talk 22:35, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

In the past you have deleted the article for Zvents due to lack of notability. Perhaps it's time to revisit this. Zvents has now a number of partnerships with notable companies now:

Zvents also powers the local search for boston.com, denverpost.com, and over 100 other websites.

In addition, there is a Wikipedia article for Eventful, a competing company, which is now lagging in internet traffic by some measures: [8]

Related to your warning on reverts in the Hemshin peoples entry

Hi Tiptoety,

You had issued a "warning" on my talk page on 9 August with relation to the reverts in the Hemshin peoples entry. I had found this to be very unjust and have tried to inform you on 11 August about the particulars. There I had also kindly requested your opinion after that feedback. Upto now I have not received any response. I really am disturbed about the existence of such a warning on my talk page which I consider totally misplaced and wish it to be rectified. Related to the same "revert war", I had a correspondance on my talk page with the Administrator Khoikhoi who has recommended me to apply to formal mediation, which I have undertaken. That correspondance includes again concise info on the " edit war" in question. If you consider necessary please have a short look there also.

Hope to have your attention at my request. ThanksOmer182 (talk) 16:12, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Please see this. Auson evaded a block, as it says his/her block log—just like Italicus did to evade the block of 201.67.241.178. Also, Auson overuses the edit summary "rv unexplained edit", even when there was sometimes an explanation—just like Ausonia and the other load of socks. Okay....

[14]. Dude, you can say whatever you want about "this is a wiki" and "everyone should be able to edit", but how can you possibly justify unprotecting a page like that? I understand somewhat where you're coming from, but you may as well unprotect Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Main Page. Seriously, what were you thinking? J.delanoygabsadds 05:29, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Um, my reasoning is that everyone should be able to edit. I mean should we really let some vandalism stop us from upholding one of Wikipedia's founding principles? Stopping people from editing is far worse than reverting vandalism, and at this day and age there are so many RC patrol guys out there I really do not see an issue. To be honest, if it was not for people coming to my talk page and yelling I would unprotect Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Main Page...those are the pages that need to be unprotected the most. I mean whats the worst that cane happen? You have to reportect it? Tiptoety talk 02:40, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
Actually, I think I owe you an apology for being so combative. It is clear that we have a difference of opinion, which is fine, but it does not justify the tone I used in my first comment. J.delanoygabsadds 02:55, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
