Pictures edit

Thanks for uploading so many pictures, but based on the postings above, it looks like you're not fully aware of the restrictions. Ijust saw the Ansel Adams portrait you uploaded, which has a restiction against commercial use. All material on Wikipedia must be freely available for all users, including commercial ones. If you could be more discriminating in the future you'd save everyone the time of dealing with inelibile images. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 01:42, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I certainly empathize with your frustration. Numerous editors have butted heads over this policy. Nonetheless, it is a foundational issue for Wikipedia and it's not likely to change. Old photographs (pre-1928), photos with generous licenses (sometimes found on Flicker), and photos we take ourselves appear to be the best sources. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 05:33, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tillman, regarding your uploads of images under a "non-commercial" license, WP:CSD#I3 doesn't prohibit them as long as they have a valid fair-use rationale and that they meet the 10 criteria in WP:NFCC. Non-commercial licensed images are only speedily deleted if they don't have a valid fair-use rationale. But since your uploads had a rationale, I've removed the speedy deletion tags. Spellcast (talk) 20:36, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks -- I thought they were the REGULAR CC 3.0 license, not the non-commercial. Cheers, Pete Tillman (talk) 01:46, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:DatsolaleeBaskets.jpg} edit

Thank you for uploading Image:DatsolaleeBaskets.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Theodore Roosevelt Lake edit edit

Thanks for your edit to the Roosevelt Lake article. I'm pretty sure "Lake Roosevelt" is an alternate (though less common) name for the lake, so I re-added it to the lede ("sometimes Lake Roosevelt" to emphasize that "Roosevelt Lake" is more common; I also left your other edits intact). I've explained further on the talk page. Just wanted to let you know! • WarpFlyght (talkcontribs) 23:22, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:MaryMurphy2.jpg edit

Image Copyright problem

Hi Tillman!
We thank you for uploading Image:MaryMurphy2.jpg, but there is a problem. Your image is currently missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. Unless you can help by adding a copyright tag, it may be deleted by an Administrator. If you know this information, then we urge you to add a copyright tag to the image description page. We apologize for this, but all images must confirm to policy on Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks so much for your cooperation.

No content in Category:Maps of Arizona edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Maps of Arizona, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Maps of Arizona has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Maps of Arizona, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Going Back to Bisbee.jpeg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Going Back to Bisbee.jpeg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Richard Shelton and Book Cover Image edit

Per WP:NONFREE, book cover images should NOT be used in an author article, only in an article about the book. As such, the image does not belong in Richard Shelton (writer), hence its removal. Also, your recent edit not only put the image back and removed a valid tag, but it removed all of the article categories and the stub tags. As you well know, the previous consensus was to remove quotes. That consensus can of course be overturned, since consensus isn't a fixed position. But change consensus first - then change. --Kim D. Petersen (talk) 16:48, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:BikeBoys.jpg edit

American Institute of Physics pictures edit

Hi there. I was recently reviewing some images, and I came across several pictures you uploaded from the American Institute of Physics photo archives. Some are public domain (or probably public domain) in the US, due to publication before 1923 (though we really need to be able to show that a picture was published before 1923, not just taken before 1923). The latter applies to Image:Ramsay william h1.jpg and Image:Leavitt henrietta b1.jpg (it's this one I'm not quite sure about). But there were three that are still in copyright and being sold by AIP (you can see this on their website where they charge people for using the photos): Image:Rubin vera f1.jpg, Image:Bethe hans.jpg, and Image:Bohr heisen pauli.jpg. This will probably mean that the images will have do be deleted because Wikipedia's non-free content policy has a criteria (#2) that means we need to avoid infringing against commercial use of the photos. The only exceptions are usually cases where the pictures themselves are "iconic" and discussed in an article as pictures (ie. the article discusses the picture, not the person in the picture). Also, in two of these cases, other photos exist (Hans Bethe and Wolfgang Pauli). Not sure about Vera Rubin, but that will probably have to go as well. It is OK to add links to the article so people can still click through to the photos, but we can't use them under our non-free content policy. If you have any objections or questions, please ask. Thanks. Carcharoth (talk) 12:21, 31 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your polite note re these photos. I'm begining to regret entering the treacherous fields of fair use. On to specifics. The Ramsay photo was almost certainly published during his lifetime; since he died in 1916, it's PD. The Leavitt photo was also likely published during her lifetime, but there's no documentation one way or the other. My feeling is, it's very likely PD, but you may feel differently. I agree it's a gray area. But, where there's no substitute, I think it's worth pushing the envelope a bit for the extra EV of supplying an image of a historic person.
For the Bethe and the group photo, it might be best to downgrade them to a link, as they're sort-of replaceable, and I don't have the energy to write a new FUR (which might not work anyway).
The Rubin I'll argue is worth keeping, and as time permits I'll rewrite the FUR to support this. The AIP doesn't really sell the photos: "the Emilio Segrè Visual Archives DOES NOT CLAIM COPYRIGHT to these images". They charge "a service fee, not a license in the legal sense." [1]. In any case, these 40 kb "big thumbnails" wouldn't compete with the full-size scans they offer.
Thanks for your interest, and I don't think I'll be posting many more fair-use images. Life is too short. Best regards, Pete Tillman (talk) 03:16, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for Image:SanJuanPotters.jpeg edit

Thank you for uploading Image:SanJuanPotters.jpeg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. Arizona links edit

  • The Clarkdale's history link is redundant, as the link before it (which I left there) is to the same page.
  • The links at Cornville, Arizona are really iffy. The first one is OK (though not the best source), the verdevalleyguide looks like straight spam and I have removed it again. The others really need to be attached to stubs of their subjects or used as sources, as there's no context as to why they are links at that page.

Up to you really, I was just following a different spammer around the Arizona pages. NJGW (talk) 05:46, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hiking article getting killed edit

Tillman:

Dunno, but it seems remotely possible judging from some of your Wikipedia activity that you might be interested in trying to save an article of potential interest to hikers in North America and elsewhere.
Wilderness Diarrhea is getting merged into Travelers Diarrhea by a couple of zealots who seem to have no concept of outdoor interests and a narrow, clinical orientation toward medicine.

I get around a lot in the outdoors and rarely treat water, but WD article had some good stuff.

After a couple of weeks of calm discussion, I went ballistic and no longer want to participate. Rational voices might help.

These guys have irrationally convinced themselves that WD isn't a legitimate topic for a Wikipedia article.

I've pointed out several bomb-proof arguements to no avail. I'd say the strongest is the rather vast number of published articles that discuss WD as a separate concern from TD. They are both environmental health topics, and obviously the context of each are far different.

I have not forgotten edit

about this. I still have much to complete on the ArbCom case but I needed a break and have been attending to some other matters for a bit.

Looking over the page you pointed to it seems that it may have achieved some amount of a lull, or not? I can see some problems like Monbiot is given too much space and in multiple places. Every other thing is labeled as being "conservative" which is rather silly. The lead summarizes the points of the critics but there is no balancing summary of the supporters. Etc.

If things are precariously stable right now I don't want to come in like a bull in a china shop and upset the whole thing. So I am asking you if you think I should dive in or let the dust settle for a while before attempting some corrective edits? Your thoughts? --GoRight (talk) 19:48, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

The page does seems to have reached a lull -- on my part, because of fatigue.
You've identified some of the weak points. The biggie (in my view) is that the Other Side has painted the author as a fool and a buffoon. Which clearly isn't the case, though he does have a confrontational style, and was (app.) careless in parts of the book. I'm not quite sure how to fix it. As you probably saw on Talk, he has some respectable supporters, but their remarks are only available on blogs, not (so far) RS's. I'm not very hopeful we'll get consensus to use Stockwell. I'm hoping some of this will be picked up in the press, and hence be usable as RS'd.
So use your judgment. Maybe start with the Monbiot duplicate? Alex's rv of some of the silly political labels has stood so far, which is hopeful. Pull some more?
Good luck on the ArbCom thing. Yuk. Kind regards, Pete Tillman (talk) 21:11, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, I'll take a close look. Thanks. --GoRight (talk) 22:09, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks (images) edit

Thanks for the kind words re image uploads -- glad you like them. Did you see File:Phallic-Head Plate, 1536 .jpg?

If you are so inclined, have a look at [2]]. Support welcome -- I don't know what his problem is.... Thanks, Pete Tillman (talk) 15:37, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I assume his problem relates to Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria - read Wikipedia:Non-free content where it is placed in context. The image is a "non-free" one, so there has to be a good reason for using it. J Milburn appears to be challenging the image under the "significance" criteria. He offers a clue as to how to use the image - build a section in the article on Hayden's relationship with Fonda. Currently the relationship is mentioned only in passing, and so the significance of the image is not clear. SilkTork *YES! 17:27, 23 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Out of my depth, pointers? edit

Hi. I'm an admin who volunteers at the copyright problems board. We've had two articles now on the desert Wahiba Sands, both of which were extensive copyright violations. Since it is obviously a notable feature, I've written a new infringement-free article, but my area is humanities. I'm hoping to find somebody who can review the article with an eye to seeing if I've completely muffed something (all my sources online) due to my lack of familiarity. I've selected you to ask because of your contributions to the template on deserts, which suggest that you might be able to help. :) If you don't have time or inclination, please let me know; I'll try to find somebody else. I'll be watching your page in case you have opportunity to reply. Thank you for any assistance or advice you may be able to offer. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:45, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I knew absolutely nothing about the Wahiba Sands before, and now know a little, so I'd say you did a good job. No obvious flubs in two readings -- though the "Geography" section might better be called "Geology"? HTH, and thanks for going above & beyond the call of duty. Cheers, Pete Tillman (talk) 22:22, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much for your feedback. :) I'll modify the section header accordingly. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:58, 16 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image (File:Avlaon Harbor.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading File:Avlaon Harbor.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Optigan13 (talk) 06:28, 2 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

If you're going to keep this image, would you please reverse it. It appears that it has been scanned in as a mirror image since the Casino would not be on that side of the bay. Thank you!--38.98.36.18 (talk) 19:49, 3 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Do you know how to do that? I don't. Thanks, Pete Tillman (talk) 19:59, 3 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
There are two ways that you can tell that the image is reversed. First, the bay is oriented the wrong way. If you are looking at the Casino from the opposite side of the bay, the ocean should be on the right side of the photo. Secondly, if you look at the original slide from the url above, you can see that the text is reversed. I went ahead and changed it already, though someone with better photo editing skills might be able to do a better job than I did.--mcd51 (talk) 04:08, 4 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! It is a nice photo -- I appreciate the help, as I am more or less clueless re digital photo editing. Cheers, Pete Tillman (talk) 04:11, 4 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Museum cats edit

it's not. in fact, I'm just undoing a misguided effort I made back in June. I've been going methodically through the states, cleaning them up one by one. As I'm sure you noticed, I just reached New Mexico, but check out any of the other states. Each museum gets at least one "type" category at the state level and only one "location" cat at either the city or county level (depending on if there are enough for a city). There was a lot of feedback against creating categories with one or two pages. So you'll occasionally see a museum tagged as "history museums in State" and "Numismatic museums in the United States" for example. Check out Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Museums for more discussion about this. Thanks dm (talk) 05:13, 14 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Shiprock edit

Hi Tillman,

I have been editing parts of the Shiprock article but think it needs more input from people better informed than I am. Should the article should be included in indigenous peoples of the americas? It misses any reference to pre-Navajo beliefs or Anasazi role. It could be barking up the wrong tree, but I am convinced there would be grounds for an unrecorded climb. You look like the correct person to point me to the correct person! That would be much appreciated. It looks like you have an awful lot on your wikiplate. Nice articles! And you did camp bird mine, too!? Diastar (talk) 22:22, 27 July 2008 (UTC)diastarReply

Thanks! I see you are way too occupied with way too much! But if you come across any experts that would be interested, please point them to Shiprock. And, it was me that dashed the dreams of rock climbers by finally finding a source that clearly states it is illegal. Still, I am convinced that that Anasazi could'uv if they wanted. BTY: there is an nice little book on the Bachelor Mine - so I will add an article soon enough. best. Diastar (talk) 01:05, 28 July 2008 (UTC)diastarReply
