Re: 2008 Richmond Spiders football team edit

No problem...thanks for putting some work into it. You even inspired me to create the 2009 article. :)

The week-to-week rankings should be available in the media info/news releases from the official UR football site. It should also give the ranks for their opponents, which would fill out the schedule portion nicely. I'll take a poke around. WildCowboy (talk) 06:57, 28 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Got the ranks into the schedule. Not sure where to list that they were #1 in the final poll at the end of the season. That usually goes in the infobox (I know there's a national championship banner in there already, but I suppose that wouldn't necessarily guarantee a #1 poll spot), but I can't figure out how to make that work, if it can be done since the infoboxes are FBS-centric. Bob Reynolds edit

When I referred to "the same year" (I think that was the original wording), I used the term "year" in its generic sense as a unit of measurement based on the amount of time it takes the Earth to revolve around the Sun. i.e., both things happened "within the same [12-month period]." A year can be and is measured from any start date for various purposes and in various cultures. Compare other measures of time. If I were to say that "Joe did X and Y within the same hour," that doesn't mean that the hour has to measured from the top of the hour. Or if I rent a cabin on a lake for the month from August 10 - September 10 and catch ten fish during my time at the cabin, I would be correct in saying I caught 10 fish in "the same month." These are generic units of time. In popular usage, they are often used as you have suggested, but that is not the only correct usage. I continue to believe that both versions of the Reynolds hook are grammatically and substantively accurate, but your version makes it clearer and I have no objection whatsoever to the edit. Flickr images edit

Hi. When you upload an image from flickr, please make sure that you use the correct license. It may not be available from the drop down and you need to enter it manually. File:Riley Skinner.jpg uses the CC-BY-2.0, not the CC-BY-3.0. Also, it is best to upload flickr images and flickr-derived images to Commons because of their flickrreview process. Images uploaded to Commons using the flickr form automatically get tagged with flickrreview template. A bot (if possible) or an admin (if the image has been cropped) will then verify that the image actually came from flickr and that the license is correct. The reason this matters is that if sometime down the road, the user takes the image off of flickr or changes the license, we have a record that the license was verified, whereas if an image is only uploaded here, we have no way of knowing whether or not the license was ever correct and so we have no choice but to delete it. --B (talk) 19:49, 10 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Red links are bad links? edit

I don't find your revert of my changes to 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference football season reasonable. Just because a player doesn't have an article now doesn't mean we shouldn't link him. All of them are certainly notable due to their All-Conference status. If someone creates an article on let's say Ras-I Dowling, does he have to go thru all of Wikipedia to check where Dowling was mentioned but not linked? As far as I know, that's not how Wikipedia is supposed to work. --bender235 (talk) 23:18, 10 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Did I say "red links are bad" or anything like that? I explained why they are unnecessary in that article in my edit summary. The guideline WP:REDLINKS says red links are good when an article will be created soon or is unarguably notable (which isn't the case here), but "when considering adding red links to lists ... editors are encouraged to write the article first, and use the wikiproject or user spaces to keep track of unwritten articles." College players are not inherently notable, and no, all-conference is most certainly not a guarantee of notability and most of those links were for second-team all-conference players. And to use your own example, the only real significant media coverage I found on Ras-I Dowling in a cursory search was an article in the UVA student newspaper. All of the rest appears to be just statistics or brief mentions. There is no need for a red link to him when until/unless he warrants an article. To answer your question, yes, when someone creates an article, it is their responsibility to "go through all of Wikipedia" and create the appropriate links for that article. It isn't difficult to simply search for the name in quotation marks and link the relevant occurrences, and it is common courtesy. There's also the {{alternate links}} template, which I wouldn't object to using on that page. Strikehold (talk) 05:14, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, Ras-I Dowling is probably on everybody's shortlist for the best cornerback prospects in 2011 (see e.g. CBS). But even if he wasn't: an All-Conference nomination clearly makes a college football player notable for Wikipedia. I think that's the kind of notability standard we figured out. It doesn't mean that every college player who once earned an All-Conference nomination already has an article, but none of them would be deleted if the were created today. That is the point. --bender235 (talk) 09:25, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I know full well who Ras-I Dowling is, but it matters not that he is on short lists for an NFL Draft still two years in the future if he doesn't have significant coverage in reliable sources. And I'm sorry, but you are mistaken about all-conference selections. In fact, all-conference honorees have been deleted in AfDs in the past (for example). It may be true that an article might not be deleted, but the policy reason would have to be that the individual met WP:GNG, or failing that, by meeting WP:ATHLETE through a qualifying professional career (or is notable for some other reason). The College Football project has made no such distinction for all-conference selections, not that they could overrule Wikipedia-wide notability criteria anyway. If you aren't satisfied with those answers, feel free to raise the discussion at the talk page of the WikiProject College Football. Strikehold (talk) 09:49, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Additionally, users who perform several reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. There needs to be some policy here. There are numerous articles that I have written under the philosophy that two refs are better than one about non-controversial things. Although for politicians like Jack Kemp and Jesse Jackson, Jr. these efforts are probably warranted, you are probably calling into question a lot of my sourcing on Rob Pelinka and John Beilein among others. It may not be necessary to describe uncontroversial facts from both a conservative and a liberal point of view but it might not hurt. A pro-labor and a pro-business perspective of a big contract signing or negotiations could differ. I don't think that there is great value to the reader in removing a lot, but will consider more carefully what kind of efforts I make in the future.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 13:26, 27 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Strikehold. As an active member of the Wikiproject Lacrosse team I've enjoyed many of your entries related to lacrosse. Therefore, I thought you may appreciate an invitation to what I hope will be a joint success story with a related (in a lot of ways) new wiki site called Fanbase.com. This is not a promotion or spam on my part. But really a request to an knowledgable wiki user to join another active wiki community where your specific insight in the area of lacrosse would be appreciated. I've spent about the last month doing a lot of updating on the site, which was in beta mode, and officially launched on Aug 24. I think it ties in real nicely to what I've been trying to accomplish in Wikipedia, namely documenting lacrosse history.

So please feel free to browse the site -- http://www.fanbase.com/NCAA-D-I-Mens-Lacrosse -- and join in the fun!

BTW, I plan on bringing up the subject of Fanbase.com and how to tie this site into Wikipedia, with the WikiProject Lacrosse team. But I thought, as a seemingly die-hard Terp fan, I might start with you. Thanks !! --10stone5 (talk) 19:18, 26 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

GAN notice edit

Hi Strikehold, you currently have at least one article up a WP:GAN in the Sports and recreation section. In an attempt to clear out the backlog there, User:Wizardman asked all sports WikiProjects to review at least two articles from that section. I'm now going around and asking anybody with an article nominated under Sports and recreation to review at least one article in that section to help us clear the backlog out so your articles can finally be reviewed faster! iMatthew talk at 15:06, 7 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Your dubious edit to the Friedrich Hayek article edit

Hello. You'll have quite some explaining to do concerning this edit, as the source you linked to as a reference (an attack on Naomi Klein) had absolutely nothing to do with either the context of the edit nor the subject of the page itself (Friedrich Hayek). J.R. Hercules (talk) 00:41, 11 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please, brush up on WP:CIVIL, friend, as this comment is clearly a personal attack. That "attack" article on Naomi Klein is actually quite glowing, I'd say it could even be called a puff piece. Also, the cited source for the statement you removed explicitly stated that Hayek did not directly address the Pinochet regime itself (i.e. did not support or condemn it). That is "paraphrasing", not "original research". I responded to your edits on the talk page. Respond there (not here) if you'd like. I've asked other editors to comment. Quarterback U edit

I noticed that you created the Quarterback U article and were party to a lengthy discussion there this past August. Recently, a new editor has tried to force a number of contentious and, in my estimation, non-constructive edits, and I think your input on the talk page would be helpful.-PassionoftheDamon (talk) 16:29, 17 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

2001–02 Maryland Terrapins men's basketball team edit

Hey, how's it going? I'm not sure how active you are these days, but in the next couple months or so, I plan on expanding the 2001–02 Maryland Terrapins men's basketball team article. It's rather bare now. The Sun still has a lot of sources up, and I'm sure I can find a bunch of others in the SI, the NYT, the Post, etc. Through my library's website I can access a bunch of newspapers too. Also I have a the SI commemorative issue.

Anyway, it'll be great if you can help out in any capacity. I just finished a big article I was working on that I hope to get to wp:FA, but I hope to start on this in a couple weeks.

Thanks

AfD nomination of Vic Hall edit

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Vic Hall. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Vic Hall. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:06, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

BC-VT "rivalry" article PROD removal edit

Since you de-prodded it, I'm going to put Boston College – Virginia Tech rivalry forth for standard deletion in the next few days. As I stated on the talk page, if the official ACC cross-divisional pairings are justification enough for a "rivalry" article, then by comparative history, there should be a rivalry article for every single pairing of pre-2004 ACC schools, because they all have more matchup history than Boston College and Virginia Tech.

VT was simply the least-bad match for BC given the current divisional structure -- our Big East pairing gave us the most history with them of any ACC team save Miami, and Miami and FSU were already paired. Scheduling formats do not a rivalry make. VT hawkeyetalk to me 14:57, 3 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Succession boxes edit

Strikehold, hello. I've noticed you've removed succession boxes from a couple of football coach bio articles. I'll agree that along with the infobox and navboxes, they may seem a little redundant, especially when a given article is still in stub form, but inclusion of all three elements seems to be the standard for coaching bios as well bios for people like US Presidents. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:52, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Like I said in the edit summary, they are redundant. I don't see it as a standard for coach articles, as some have them and some do not. I will bring it up on the WPCFB talk page. Strikehold (talk) 23:50, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reviewer granted edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. The Rambling Man (talk) 16:54, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Washington & Lee Generals men's lacrosse edit

A tag has been placed on Washington & Lee Generals men's lacrosse, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to a nonexistent page.

If you can fix this redirect to point to an existing Wikipedia page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you also fix the redirect. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Template:Eastern Michigan Eagles football coach navbox edit

I disagree with your edit to this template. The nickname is still a very contentious issue at EMU. The "Eagles" nickname is just entering its 20th year, while "Normalites" lasted 30 years and "Hurons" lasted 62 years. Obviously there aren't people out there arguing about "Normalites" but there are a lot of alumni, including former players and probably former coaches, who identify as "Hurons". Rather than listing them out in the title, would it be better to break out the coaches by period within the template? One way or another, there needs to be an acknowledgement of the historical nicknames. cmadler (talk) 18:33, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Why in the navbox? Those are things that can (and should) be expounded upon at full length at Eastern Michigan University, Eastern Michigan Eagles, Eastern Michigan Eagles football, and List of college nickname changes in the United States, which I think are all more appropriate places to show the differences, past usages, and controversies, but they can't really adequately be addressed within the physical limitations of the navbox. Also, I would guess there have been more recent and probably equally contentious nickname changes at other schools, and I think this has been the only college football coach navbox I've seen use all past nicknames. If you disagree, perhaps we should get more opinions at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football? Strikehold (talk) 19:48, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, of the 40 coaches listed as "Eastern Michigan Eagles head football coaches", it is only really true for 9 of them. The other 31 -- the vast majority -- coached the program under a different name. I've reformatted it another way with nicknames, I think this might be better. cmadler (talk) 01:47, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I still don't think that it is really necessary information to convey in the navbox, and similar practices are not done for other schools, most of which have also undergone several nickname and/or school name changes. I will bring it up at the College Football project. Strikehold (talk) 23:52, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
