Right Wing edit

I quote from the article "Crosland was seen as a leader and intellectual guru of the "right wing" or "social democratic" wing of the Labour Party in the 1970s." Opposition to Grammar Schools was universal in all wings of the Labour Party back then. ----Snowded TALK 05:59, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Forgive me for saying so, but you are simply wrong about Labour and grammar schools. Thus Denis Lawton in Education and Labour Party Ideologies 1900-2001 and Beyond: "Gaitskell, before and after he became Leader of the Labour Party in 1955, claimed to be a strong supporter of the comprehensive school but at the same time, was anxious to reassure supporters of selection that grammar school tradition would not be destroyed." Compare this with Crosland's famed (but possibly apocryphal) assertion that he would "destroy every fucking grammar school in England." It's not worth fighting about this, but as a skeptical, disinterested student of Labour history (my own sympathies are v. High Tory), I think it ridiculous to call Crosland (who was not a member of Gaitskell's Shadow Cabinet) a representative of right-wing Labour.

Just out of curiosity, what is your background? It's not every day that I come across someone interested in these arcana.Stealstrash (talk) 06:17, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

It certainly was not a left-right marker and isn't today. I think in retrospect it was a mistake (having supported it at the time) as its practical effect was to reduce social mobility but that is a personal view. The simply fact is that Crosland was (including modern times with his influence on Blair) one of the intellectual leaders of the right in the Labour Party. Gaitskillism is not the entirety of the right in labour party history. As to my background I am fairly easy to track down as there is a web link on my user page. You will see a tirade against the Conservative Party and its use of consultants there tomorrow and I was the Labour Candidate in the Primary School Mock Election in 1964 ....----Snowded TALK 06:28, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Well, it is perennially amusing to me that Anthony Blair is viewed by many on the left as "right-wing." From a detached Tory perspective, Clement Attlee, for example, was far more conservative culturally speaking than Blair, who ushered in the end of Lords &c., or even the Hayekian Mrs. Thatcher. (This explains why, say, A.N. Wilson supported Labour in the '80s and why to this day Simon Heffer is nostalgic about Anthony Benn.) So I suppose we are at a kind of perspectival impasse.Stealstrash (talk) 06:43, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thatcher with a smily face and probably did more harm to socialism that herself ....
Its not a perspective impasse, the context here is the Labour Party not British Politics----Snowded TALK 07:24, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
