Welcome to Wikipedia! edit

Hello Squell, welcome to Wikipedia!

Here are some tips:

If you feel a change is needed, feel free to make it yourself! Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone (yourself included) can edit any article by following the Edit this page link. Wikipedia convention is to be bold and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not sure how editing works, have a look at How to edit a page, or try out the Sandbox to test your editing skills.

If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Thanks and happy editing, Alphax τεχ 10:19, 7 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

CALNDR-L edit

Considering your edits of several calendar articles, I invite you to join CALNDR-L, an email calendar discussion list. We discuss all of the world's calendars, whether current, historical, or invented.

Wikpedia policy is to add new edits to the bottom, not the top, of talk pages—indeed, the software automatically posts comments at the bottom of any section with a ==Heading== when using that feature. — Joe Kress 02:30, 10 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I subscribed to CALNDR-L 2 days ago, thanks! I'd prefer reading the threads sorted, the most recent on top - but since nearly nobody uses the {{toppostusertalk}} template, I've changed it. squell 15:09, 10 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Userbox edit

Just to let you know, I stole your userbox. Hail Eris! the wub "?!" 00:21, 17 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Appreciate the Heads Up edit

Thanks for the helpful information! Nice to see someone else who is new sending out the good tips as well as the old veterans :p . Hope to work with you in the future!

Wikipedia:Eras edit

I can sort of understand why you might want to remove commentary from this page (although personally I find it helpful), but shouldn't you either remove everyone's commentary or remove no commentary rather than just mine? I'm a bit puzzled by your edit. I'd be grateful if you'd go back and either restore all my comments or alternatively remove everyone elses. I don't mind how the project page is played as long as it seems fair. All the best, jguk 18:51, 21 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I only removed the bit in which you replied to someone. Right now it's supposed to be a head count, lest the page explode in discussion. I consider it impolite (and not my responsibility) to remove motivations, and you've already made your opinion crystal clear that way — but if you also start replying to others, a third party is bound to respond to you in return (you seem to have quite a "fan club"), and turn it into yet another tiring discussion. Preventing those is is exactly what the poll is about. — squell 20:18, 21 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

You seem to have the wrong definition of fan:) Mind you, do bear in mind that once you deduct the sockpuppets, the number is smaller:) jguk 20:20, 21 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

AYPS edit

I hardly consider myself to be taking it too seriously when Christianity is mocked as a spiritual pestilence. I don't care if it's a joke or not. It's rude and thoughtless to make fun of any religion and respond to a calling-out as an over-reaction. --Elliskev 17:58, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I didn't create AYPS, I'm merely bringing it to attention. That aside; why can't people make fun of religion? Humans satirise everything else, including politics, war, death, and indeed, religion. In any case, my intent here is not to mock religion, but to ridicule some of the arguments used on Eras. — squell 19:28, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I saw that you were the one to bring it up for AfD, so I'm not accusing you of religious bigotry. I may have been a little strong with my choice of words. I do, however, feel that to perpetuate an offensive joke is offensive. Satire is fine. I understand gallows humor. I'm not at all humorless. I like Life of Brian and I like The Meaning of Life (at least some of it, not all of it - it goes overboard in some parts). The difference is that with Monty Python, it's (mostly) funny. Simply referring to Christianity as a spiritual pestilence is not funny. It's not witty and it's not clever. It's just mean-spirited. --Elliskev 19:54, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I may also have misjudged AYPS. Someone added it here, so I thought it was a parody of the arguments in that article. It may just have been unintentionally funny in that context, and (indeed) originally intended to bash christianity. We seem to be mostly in agreement on Eras, so let's not waste further energy on this. — squell 20:38, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. --Elliskev 20:47, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Marching Morons edit

Hey Squell,

I am new to Wikipedia. I assume that this is the proper way to communicate with you, if not please forgive me.

I noticed that you marked The Marching Morons article here at Wikipedia as a possible copyright violation. I wrote a new article: The Marching Morons/Temp. I am not sure how the Temp page replaces the main page. Should I make the replacement now? I just wanted to check with you since you marked the page as a possible copyright violation.

VWN en WCN edit

Beste Squell,

Year 2038 edit

Hello. I'm having a rather silly edit discussion on the year 2038 problem. You've weighed in on this issue in the past so I thought I would direct your attention to it. Sorry to bother you. ~a (usertalkcontribs) 16:54, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

AD/CE edit

Hi, Squell!
I'm with you that the trolling is inappropriate and unnecessary (I'd be the last person to oppose secularizing the dating system), but do you think a revert is the best way to handle it?
OK, obviously you do since you did the revert, but you get my drift. This could be seen as a heavy-handed response to an expression of opinion, and it is the talk page, after all. If that blither had gone on the actual article page, I'd have done the same thing, but I'd be a little inclined to give more leeway on the talk page. I'd have given the poster perhaps one chance, reminded him/her of the policy at the top of the page, then zinged the trolling too. Just my $.02.Hope I'm not coming across as heavy-handed.
Septegram 22:39, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I noticed the edit on my watchlist, looked at previous edits [1][2], [3] and reasoned that these are not serious attempts to use the talk page. You can of course put the drivel back if you take issue with that ;) — squell 16:52, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
No worries. Looks like you've been at this Wiki thing long enough that I shouldn't be second-guessing you. I'll leave the drivel alone.
Regards,

the merge discussion is there now edit

The merge discussion has now started at the bottom of talk:Calendar era. I got a little ahead of myself, sorry. --Aervanath 21:26, 31 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:ItsaNewday.ogg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:ItsaNewday.ogg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 23:27, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

This is ridiculous; Bots go around speedy deleting things these days? squell\talk 07:07, 14 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process.
