College of Arms

edit

I'm so sorry to have put the College of Arms review on hold, but I honestly think I must do so until the question of acceptable length is addressed. I can tell you candidly that unless I am advised that 100KB+ is a no-no, I intend to promote the article to GA. Meanwhile, have you noticed that Swedish heraldry is up for Featured Article? I wonder if you might like to look in and add your heraldic expertise to the review. More on the College a.s.a.p. Tim riley (talk) 17:11, 10 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I have a couple of projects to finish off right now, but if you have anything that needs to be done just give me a heads up. Sodacan (talk) 19:56, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Will do, and thanks again. Fry1989 eh? 20:04, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi again. There's just one thing I've noticed about the Seal of Hawaii. I've noticed variations on the web, but most commonly the little shield in the centre of the coat of arms is blue with a white star, instead of green with a gold star. I think that's to represent Hawaii being a US state. If you do decide to change it, can I ask that you remove the black stroke from the star, so it's a borderless white star in the blue shield? Anyhow, thanks :) Fry1989 eh? 20:12, 22 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
According to this source: 'Hawaii's great seal and coat of arms' by Meiric K. Dutton (1960), which I used for the images, the star is yellow on a green inescutcheon. But this book was published in 1960 and revised in 66, so it is possible since then that the colours have been changed from green to blue, and yellow to white as some of the other example images suggests. Sodacan (talk) 04:38, 23 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Another source which supports the green inescutcheon and yellow star: "Arms. An heraldic shield which is quarterly; first and fourth, stripes of the Hawaiian flag; second and third, on a yellow field, a white ball pierced on a black staff; overall, a green escutcheon with a five-pointed yellow star in the center." Egyptian Kingdom CoA

edit

Any chance you can do File:Coat of arms of the Egyptian Kingdom 2.png? Doesn't look overly complex. Thanks so much! – Connormah (talk) 20:15, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Also, can you take a look at [2]? I was going to try this, but Illustrator couldn't render your CoA correctly and I didn't want to mess with it too much. Thanks. – Connormah (talk) 20:20, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
The first one is a little too small, I will try and find a bigger rendition to use when I start. The second image is not mine, its another user's but based on a previous one I made. I think the user uses adobe illustrator, which is sometimes inkscape incompatible. Will get back to you soon, Sodacan (talk) 03:00, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. Thanks. – Connormah (talk) 03:54, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Seems to be a weird rendition, I think this is what we may want here (looks like there's pretty wide usage of this variant across the Wikis, maybe you could do this one?). I'll look around for the other one though. – Connormah (talk) 03:56, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yep, this is much better, will do. Sodacan (talk) 05:50, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, and as usual, no rush at all. – Connormah (talk) 06:19, 19 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also, could you possibly do an SVG of the Canadian province of Ontario's CoA? Not sure about copyright and all, but if it'll be a problem, then it's okay. Thanks again! – Connormah (talk) 05:07, 22 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Dear Sodacan, you changed the coat of arms of Camilla after she became Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, but there isn't any change on her coat of arms at her article. Why? Keivan.fTalk 09:36, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

But I did! (File:Coat of Arms of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.svg), I didn't create a new file name, just uploaded the new image over the old file. Arms of the Seychelles

I'll be honest, the complexity of the Seychellois coat of arms made me doubtful we would ever have a good quality SVG of it, but once again you have made magic of it. Bravo :) Fry1989 eh? 23:32, 12 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! Don't give up on me yet, been really busy so have not been so productive as I wish I could be on some of the other requests. But the priority right now are still the National flag and coat of arms images that should use vector graphics. Sodacan (talk) 02:33, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

The category I linked seems to have massively expanded! Oh well, more work... :D Sodacan (talk) 08:10, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I'm guilty :) I added several extra that belong in a category like that, but I sorted the current ones to the top of the category above all the historical ones so they don't get mixed up. There's also several countries' coats of arms which we don't have on Commons cause there's no free version available, like Ghana's, but I'm sure you're already aware of that. Fry1989 eh? 20:58, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello again. I hate asking this cause I know you're working on the arms in National flag and coat of arms images that should use vector graphics, but was wondering if you could maybe jump ahead to making the coat of arms of Malawi. We don't have any full version of that coat of arms anymore since the non-free version here on Wikipedia English was deleted, we just have the shield. Btw, great job on the Thai Garuda, I universally replaced the other one with your new version on all projects since the Commons:Delinker request wasn't put through. Fry1989 eh? 22:51, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much for that, I have totally given up on the Delinker request. I knew how manually intensive it was to change those around, so thank you so much. I was aware of the Malawi coat of arms disappearing, I will start on it. Sodacan (talk) 05:22, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it takes several hours cause you have to go through every diffferent language Wikipedia, and while I enjoy doing it, by the end of 2 hours or so it's like "oh god, make it stop!" lol. I'm actually slowly working on making sure all Wikipedias have every coat of arms and flag on them, many language wikipedias don't. I've been working backwards up the alphabet and so far have gone from Z back to Togo. Also thank you so much for the wonderful barnstar on my Commons page. I'm pretty obsessive about symbolism (flags, coats of arms, seals, road signs, company logos...), but I enjoy working on it, and it's nice to know the effort is appreciated. WikiProject:Scuba diving

edit

Hi Sodacan, Glad to see a new name on the WikiProject Scuba diving list. I have no specific suggestions for graphics, but I'm sure you will find some for yourself. I do a bit of Inkscape work myself, as I find the need, but it tends to be mostly fairly basic illustrations on Wikipedia. On Wikitravel I do a lot of dive site maps for the Cape Town area. Anyway, have fun. I am sure our paths will cross occasionally as there are not many editors active on the project right now. If you are interested, there is also a portal for Underwater diving which includes WPSCUBA in its scope. Cheers, Peter (Southwood) (talk): 20:50, 17 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks again, these are very interesting. I think the images (or at least one of them) would be good in the 2007 Constitution article. At the moment I am trying to look for some sources (preferably in English and in book form) so I can put these: Commons:Seals of Thai Monarchs onto the individual king's pages, the same way the European royals have their coats of arms. The photo is from Frederiksborg Palace (in Denmark) and it shows how HM the King's privy seal is used in the place of a coat of arms on these painted panels as a Knight of the Order of the Elephant. Other panels belonging to the Emperor of Japan and the Shah of Iran is also there. Off topic, but interesting to me at least! Sodacan (talk) 12:46, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Non-free rationale for File:National Assembly 1940.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:National Assembly 1940.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. You might be able to help

edit

Hi sodacan. You may be able to help out a user who is trying to create/source an insgina for the Ulster Defence Regiment. A user with more experience than myself is claiming that the likeness is copyrighted. See here--Cailil talk 15:32, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I will wait for a consensus before I wade in. The question here is whether to: use the original (under fair-use) or use a recreation (hopefully in vector form). If a recreation is needed then it would not be difficult. I already have this file (File:Royal Harp Badge of Ireland.svg), which heraldically speaking, is essentially the same image. But is this what the users want? it is up to them to decide what to accept. Again I won't interfere at this stage. Sodacan (talk) 16:12, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's a little more complex, the claim from Wereith is that the emblem's likeness is subject to copyright and therefore a free recreation is impossible. But no worries, if you want to wait grand - I just thought you might be able to clear up that copyright issue from experience--Cailil talk 16:42, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sodacan I'm slightly confused about it all to tell the truth. Your previous reply to me (which I can't find now) indicated that a drawing of the badge would be acceptable under free use. I've done that now and still the copyright editors are saying it's not right - see here: Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Badge Comparison sketch.jpg. I would like to put it to bed and find a system which can be used in perpetuity and I would really appreciate any help you can give me. SonofSetanta (talk) 15:04, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
The file you uploaded isn't actually a drawing. It's a photomanipulation of the non-free images. You need too start from scratch. Also using the image Sodacan suggested above remains a good idea--Cailil talk 17:30, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's totally the wrong harp Calil. There's got to be some accuracy. I'm in touch with the National Archives at the moment and their comments are starting to be illuminating. It seems that photographic images of badges are acceptable for use for a start. I'm awaiting a further reply from them on other issues though and will report back once I have anything to say. Differencing of arms for great-grandchildren of a British monarch

edit

Sodacan - you know your heraldry! How do the male-line great-grandchildren of a British monarch difference their arms? Do they use a second label alongside their father's five-pointed label, or do they have a unique (5-point, x-point?) label of their own? I'm thinking here of, for example, the children of the Dukes of Kent and Gloucester. P M C 22:31, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm not Sodacan but I can answer your question: The arms of male-line grandchildren of the sovereign are treated as indivisible and unalterable. Therefore, as the charged five-point labels do not change, other cadency marks are added as is standard. The eldest son of a male-line grandchild of the sovereign adds a second label. The daughters bear the plain coat (the arms with the charged five-point label). The second son of a male-line grandchild of the sovereign adds a crescent to the arms. The arms can also be quartered with those of a heraldic heiress, keeping the label of five-points. Seven Letters 00:15, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

-Furthermore, the Royal Warrant of February 24th 1975 making the Arms of the male-line grandchildren of the sovereign hereditary specifically omits the eldest son of the Heir Apparent-so the Arms of the Duke of Cambridge, as he is in the direct line of succession, are not hereditary (and they will at any rate change when his father ascends the throne), but oddly, Prince Harry; as a male-line grandchild of the sovereign who is not the Heir Apparent's eldest son has Arms that according to the 1975 Warrant are hereditary. So that means that if Prince Harry marries and has any children before HM the Queen dies; his children will be entitled to bear his arms, suitably differenced, but once his father becomes King, he will cease to be a grandchild of the sovereign and will become the child of the sovereign and as such will be granted new Arms (which I suspect will be the Arms currently borne by his older brother, bearing in mind they allude to his mother), which will not be hereditary (the Arms of the sovereign's children are, as you probably know-not hereditable), and his children would not be entitled to bear them with the suitable differences.

Here is the text of the 1975 Royal Warrant:

http://www.heraldica.org/topics/britain/prince_highness_docs.htm#Warrant_of_Feb_24_1975

Elizabeth R Trusty and Well beloved we greet you and do hereby signify unto you that Whereas His Majesty King George the Fifth by Letters Patent bearing date the 30th day of November in the 8th year of his reign did declare his royal will and pleasure that the children of any sovereign of these realms and the children of the sons of any such sovereign and the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have and at all times hold and enjoy the style title or attribute of Royal Highness and whereas it hath been customary for us and our royal predecessors from time to time by warrant to assign armorial ensigns to those members of our royal family enjoying the style of Royal Highness and whereas it is our royal will and pleasure to make provision for the armorial ensigns of those members of our royal family and their descendants not enjoying the style of Royal Highness but being nonetheless lineally descended in the direct single line from any sovereign of these realms, we do hereby declare and ordain that the armorial ensigns assigned by Royal Warrant to any grandchild of a sovereign of these realms (excepting the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall henceforth become heritable by the descendants of such grandchild with due and proper differences according to the laws of arms we therefore require and command you and your successors in the office respectively to order marshal and set forth upon all occasions such armorial ensigns accordingly and we command you to cause this our warrant to be recorded in our college of arms whereof ye are not to fail, for which this shall be your warrant. Given at our Court in HM Yacht Britannia this 24th day of February 1975 in the 24th year of our reign.

You were in the Outer court, with the big green field between you and the temple. Once you enter the palace gates, you have to go through the Outer court, then to the ticket booths and into the temple, it is when you leave the temple that you enter the Middle court. I can also see that the golden spire is at the front of the three other spires in your photo, This is the Phra Si Rattana Chedi, which is on the western side of the temple, facing the Outer court.
