Rwandan Genocide edit

Thanks for helping by putting a batch of sources in Further reading; I got interrupted.Parkwells (talk) 13:15, 15 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I figured as much :-) I'm not sure I did the right thing though, as most of them are page-referenced, and they were all placed under Rwandan_Genocide#Background and seem to be about the Burundi genocide. Since that isn't the topic of the article, I'm wondering whether there should be a Further reading section listing only publications on a clearly different, albeit not unrelated topic. ---Sluzzelin talk 19:03, 15 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

"Homofürst" gets 9,560 hits on google. Over half of them (5,260) are for "fick dich weg, du Homofürst". It's a derogatory word. Of course it's been re-appropriated within the the gay community too, just like almost every other derogatory word, but even then it doesn't simply mean an "openly gay person". Next time you see it, you can revert. It doesn't belong in that article. Calling its removal vandalism is confused at best, but more likely it's just disingenuous and deliberate bashing. ---Sluzzelin talk 16:19, 19 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

ANI edit

I saw your comment at ANI[1]. I don't know exactly what it is you want to discuss. The Administrators noticboard WP:AN, is for requesting administrative sanctions against users. If you want to have a community discussion about possibly checking over Rlevse's contributions to look for any misconduct then I think filing a WP:RfCU (request for comment on user) is the best way. I don't think it is likely that it will be productive, but it does seem that the community has some desire to discuss the matter. ·Maunus·ƛ· 01:45, 8 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Like you, I don't know whta will be productive and what won't, but stifling discussion never seems to be an intelligent course, no matter what one's perspective is. It was perhaps more a general comment, because I often see ANI as unwelcoming toward complaintants. WP:PLAXICO still gets cited more often than not (despite the BLP-violating and deleted shortcut). Often people close the thread immediately with reference to "no administrative action required" or other tags of irrelevance.
Maybe it's because one of my favoured corners of WP are the reference desks. When someone asks a misplaced question, we (ideally) post it to the expert desk and leave a link behind. Or we instruct the querent where to place their query. We serve the original poster. I miss this spirit at ANI. ---Sluzzelin talk 01:55, 8 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
I agree that ANI sucks. The problem is that many people want to discuss for discussions sake while others see it as a board to serve the function of meting out sanctions. Sometimes discussions are clearly kept going only stirring the pot on some larger or deeper discussion, I don't think this is really helpful for the encyclopedia. I congratulate you with being a reference desk regular - as opposed to ANI that is an area where wikipedia generally works, in that it serves its readership. ANI is mostly talk for the sake of hearing one's own - with occasional exception where there are actual issues to be adressed. ·Maunus·ƛ· 02:02, 8 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hey, after having read about your fields of interest, I think you might wish to occasionally look at our Language desk and Humanities desk. We have a couple of impressive generalists, but as far as I know we have no specialists in Mesoamerican languages and history. (In any case, I now know where you live, and will be knocking on your talk page, next time such a question pops up)! Your characterization of WP:ANI is probably accurate, sadly. Yet I do think part of the problem often arises when ANI-regulars dismiss or ridicule a request, nip it in its bud, hat-note and archive so soon. And it's also completely unpredictable what will transpire; it depends on who happens to be hanging around. Look at al the "I blocked X" - "Bad block. I unblocked him" exchanges. I usually approach a single administrator I'm familiar with when I want administrative action. Anyway, thank you for sharing your thoughts and attempting to help me understand that really odd board. ---Sluzzelin talk 19:45, 8 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Not "tactics" edit

Just making the best out of a mistake. Getting mad at him was a mistake: I let myself be trolled. I appreciate your call for disengagement, but I really hope MF follows up on it, because he has been given a free pass for far too long. -GTBacchus(talk) 04:48, 3 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't think the project is being "actively damaged by Mr. Fatuorum". He doesn't push any POV I'm aware of, and, apart from being a tremendous asset in the realm of content, he also helps other less experienced content contributors. Seriously, I think one of the reasons you are so angry, is because you're an administrator capable of empathy and not one to pedantically follow rules, and Malleus is lumping you in with the evil admin crowd. Having witnessed a clash between the two of you last year, I think you just need to avoid one another. At WQA for example. And when Malleus responds to your WQA-comments on your talk page, there is no obligation for you to respond either. ---Sluzzelin talk 04:59, 3 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Do you think that chronic incivility can damage the project? My impressions about Malleus are not based on my interactions with him, at least not primarily. I've seen him harass and bait others; hence the existence of these WQA threads in the first place. How much of that should we tolerate, really? Is there a point where a valued content contributor can become a net harm because of the way they treat others? -GTBacchus(talk) 05:03, 3 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes chronic incivility, chronic belligerence for belligerence's sake, chronic picking on the same user, chronic lack of collegiality can all make the project worse. I don't see anyone here as chronically rude, just periodically lashing out. I don't think it's worth all this fuss. Neither in your nor in his case. Ignoring the rudeness and monitoring my own behavior, trying to stay on topic, not making things personal, that is how I try to deal with rudeness. On rare occasions, I have e-mailed users I am friendly with, explaining why a change in tone might be for their own benefit. With mixed results, but at least without any unnecessary drama from snarky kibitzers and narrow-minded busybodies. We can all feel jaded and slip up, and it's far less a deal than what we sometimes make out of it. ---Sluzzelin talk 17:46, 3 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
That's a point well-made about the snarky and the narrow-minded. I'm not alone in disagreeing that there's no chronic problem here, and something may come of this, not at my instigating. We'll see. I'll be around, anyway. -GTBacchus(talk) 07:55, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

John Lee Hooker's year of birth edit

People keep changing JLH's year of birth back to 1917 from a documented date of 1912 - the ONLY documented date ever located regarding his year of birth. Why is it that people such as yourself keep changing it back when I have gone through great trouble to locate census records that show JLH was 7 years old at his last birthday in 1919? Did YOU not read the footnote I made documenting the 1920 census record I found in Tutwiler, Mississipi? You may look it up yourself if you wish - that's why I sourced the record and made the change. I even emailed his biographer (Charles Shaar Murray) with my findings and a copy of the record and he immediately wrote back, agreeing with my research and thanking me for my work. If you have a source better than mine, I'd certainly like to see it - otherwise, change the date back and leave it alone until something better comes along (Doubtful - any birth record that might have existed burned up with the town hall in 1927 and no birth records at the state level exist. Only the 1920 federal census makes a note of JLH)Brprivate (talk) 06:29, 27 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fair enough. I carelessly misread the second footnote, and for some reason also missed the talkpage discussion (though I do remember looking for it). Entirely my bad. Thanks for pointing it out. ---Sluzzelin talk 06:40, 27 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Music Chords edit

Thanks for your help over at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Entertainment#Identifying_Music_Chords

Could I ask why it's referred to as a diminished seventh rather than a major sixth in that situation? 134.148.5.1 (talk) 01:46, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

You could also refer to it as a diminshed triad with a major sixth. One reason it is rarely called this is because, as with most chords, there are underlying scales that may correspond to this chord. These scales usually traditionally already include a minor sixth, so the "sixth" position is already taken. In the case of the diminished seventh chord in popular music and jazz, one commonly applied scale is the whole-tone-half-tone octatonic scale, which includes the minor sixth. But does not include the minor sixth. So, as I said, you can also view the diminshed seventh as a major sixth in equal temperament. In fact, you're always encouraged to approach chords and harmony from all sorts of angles. For example, you can view sixth and seventh chords as pairs of overlapping fourths and fifths (or, in the case at hand, a pair of overlapping tritones). ---Sluzzelin talk 20:04, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I was extremely careless. The commonly used octatonic scale does not include the minor sixth. Sheesh. One more reason your ears are better than you gave them credit! ---Sluzzelin talk 01:52, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
