Eliphas Dow of Hampton Falls, New Hampshire was executed for the murder of Peter Clough also from Hampton Falls. It appeared upon evidence, that a feud had subsisted between them for quite some time. On December,12 1754, they accidentally met at the house of Eliphas' brother Noah Dow. They began to threaten each other, then Clough challenged Dow to go out of the house to fight. Eliphas went out himself. Dow followed & as he went out, took up his brothers hoe and struck Clough with a massive blow on the side of the head which instantly killed him.
Trial and Execution
Dow was arrested and went before the honorable judge Meshech Weare. He was committed to prison in Portsmouth. " At the February term of Superior Court, he was indicted, tried & convicted: and sentence was pronounced upon him that he should be hanged by the neck until he should be dead." Sentence ordered to be executed on March 20, but two reprieves were allowed until May 8, 1755. Eliphas pleaded "strictly self defense" at his trial. He was the first male to be executed in New Hampshire. Many people came out to see the public execution.
The exact location of the gallows had been debated for sometime. Some accounts have descriptions of the corner South and Sagamore Streets. Some historic accounts have the location of Ward's Corner. He was hung for about three hours between the time of twelve noon until three in the afternoon. His body was buried in the road a few rods from the gallows, just at the declivity of the hill.
Some written accounts has his name as Eliphaz Dow.

I see... I just seems a bit personal for one person to nominate an article that interests someone. I happen to like New hampshire history and when I saw the list of 24 people that NH executed. Thank you for the Information. I love Wikipedia. I catch myself hitting random article for a hour or so. Just learning the strangest things... Ha-ha. - LOL, be glad you didn't read about earthquakes or something ;-) And just to respond to an earlier note, there isn't generally anything personal meant when someone nominates an article for deletion. Not all topics that interest us may meet Wikipedia's guidelines for existance. I'm interesting in the history of Bryan-College Station (as well as US history in general), but many places here that are historical in a local sense are not historical enough to have Wikipedia articles. Speedy deletion of Eliphas Dow edit
A tag has been placed on Eliphas Dow, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.
