Grey Owl - a fake for sure!

Hi -

How does Grey Owl not count as a literary fake? He wrote books that recount untrue stories purporting to be real accounts. Moreover, he wrote fictions under a fake name, pretending to an ethnic identity that wasn't his. I fail to see the difference between this story and that of Forrest Carter or Nasdijj?

CSD for vanity

Vanity is not a basis for speedy under WP:CSD. Please read up on the topic.

IIRC "vanity" is often used on AfD. My memory is not very good abt what used to be on CSD, but in any case, vanity to my understanding implies being the person or part of the group, which is irrelvant for CSD. If someone ran across the Web site and said "Here's something WP needs to cover!", it's still A7 w/o being vanity. Of course none of this makes you a jerk, as my tone might reasonably have made you think i thot. I probably should have said more.Thanks.

Let me try restating:

• Vanity may be a significant part of the context of an AfD debate, and in any case, AfD gives plenty of room for clarification of distinctions so that "vanity"'s imprecision is not significantly harmful there.
• Using "vanity" in a speedy nom'n confuses your colleagues about whether the motivation by vanity is relevant to speedy deletion (it is not), does so where there is no opportunity for clarifying discussion, and is insignificant in the mental and physical effort saved over using {{db-band}} or {{db-bio}}.

Your explanations are not needed to excuse you, nor are they justifications for continuing. Just don't use "vanity" in the context of speedies, please.

Artists Rifles

I see that you re-instated an entry on the 21 SAS/Artists Rifles:

"In the Southeast Asian Conflict in the 1970´s 21 SAS was active as a reserve volunteer unit mainly as an observation team. The unit used non-British personnel as well as UK born soldiers. They were disguised as Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian."

Can you substantiate a source for this? I have not heard it before in all the published and private journals. Moreover I have asked people who served in that era and they all said it was untrue.

• It was not my addition, I restored it mainly because an anon removed it without explanation. That kind of removals are common forms of vandalism here. And as far as I know, SAS does accept non-British soldiers.

Hi Skysmith, I notice you've been putting a lot of {{uncategorized}} tags on articles. Would you consider dropping by Category Needed every so often and categorizing some entries? Request for Collaboration.

Hello,

Thanks for tagging the 3 dimensional coordinate system entry for wikification. There is a newer tag which is rather similar in format to the {{cleanup}} tag you used. Considering that you do a fair amount of tagging, could you please use the {{wikify-date|April 2006}} tag in place of the {{wikify}} tag in the future? There is an effort underway to make it easier to sort through articles that may require wikification, and using the suggested tag would be very helpful.

Your assistance with this effort will be greatly appreciated.

Copyvio on Rick Baccus seems wrong.

The possibly-violated site you mentioned [1]is a 'U.S. Government' site (note the '.mil' domain). Under the provisions of the 'Freedom of Information Act', I am allowed to use, copy, and disseminate this information in any way I see fit. I spent a lot of time on this important article and was diligent in sighting all of my sources.

Speedy deletion

Regarding the article George Tiller, which you tagged for speedy deletion with the reason "it is an article about a real person or group of people that does not assert the importance or significance of the subject. (CSD A7)", I wanted you to know that I have removed the speedy deletion tag. This article does not qualify for speedy deletion because the article claims he is known nationally, which is an assertion of importance. Geo-stubs

Hi - a bit of a combination bouquet and brickbat here... It's good to see you adding the geo-stub template to a lot of articles that need it, so thanks for that... but most countries now have their own geo-stub templates (almost always in the form CountryName-geo-stub), so it would help far more if you could try them instead! Otherwise it simply means re-doing the stub shortly after you add it. I realise there's a huge list of different stub types and it';s impossible for anyone to remember them all, but even if you try CountryName-geo-stubs on preview and if they don't exist going back to geo-stub, it'll be even more help. DIY Generation

I posted this on the "talk section" of the post I wrote as well, but I just wanted to let you know that the DIY generation is not nonsense. It is a well used term in the arts and technology field that applies to creative people who use web applications and various other tools to create new work. It is commonly applied to the term Generation C, which Wikipedia already has an entry for, and a source for this can be found on FutureWire (http://futurewire.blogspot.com/2005/09/diy-generation.html). Or just google the term. You'll find fifteen million results.

Check out the Nicole-Reine Lepaute article in the Galego wikipedia - [3]. They give her name as Nicole-Reine Etable de la Briere Hortense Lepaute. It's plain old Nicole-Reine Étable de la Brière Lepaute in the English and French language articles. Mock Duck

Heya, thanks for your comments on Mock Duck's potential deletion. Now that you've expressed your opinion, though, you should remove the {{hangon}} template at the top of the article, since it's only really meant to buy additional time to write your opinion. Now that you've explained it, the template has served its purpose -- the administrator who decides what to do with the article will make sure to read the talk page before making up their mind, so there's no harm in removing it.

Spam prevention

Hi Skysmith. Someone has randomly picked an address in your userspace (User:Skysmith/w/index.php) to start spamming Wikipedia with ads for porn, pharmaceuticals, and the like. This is a fairly unusual occurance, but it does happen (see, for example, Talk:Phorum/w/index.php, which has had the same problems), usually ending ... w/index.php. I was just wondering why you twice deleted my linkless tag re Hugh O'Flaherty. You claimed in the first edit summary that there are "9 links to be exact"; I see zero (0) links and one book for suggested reading, which is not the same thing. Can you enlighten me please.

Look I can Google and copy and paste URLs as well as anyone, I just think whoever created it should do that. As far as I can see there are no links, and your summarily deleting the well-deserved linkless tag is unprofessional.

• Links of {{linkless|}} tag do not refer to external links (but if you can supply good ones, by all means do that). The last time I checked the page was linked from 9 other Wikipedia pages about related topics that are not project or user pages, which does not make it "orphaned".

• As for not having your own computer, is it not a hindrance to having a Wikipedia account. I have used Wikipedia from number of different computers including my own, from work and internet cafes, depending on where I am at the moment. The article, to me, didn't seem like it was religious advocacy at all; it merely described a phenomenon of the Second Great Awakening. Cleanup Nomina Anatomica

The article provides a good example of Wikipedia’s wise policy regarding links: "Only make links that are relevant to the context."

Links that would be relevant include Anatomische Gesellschaft, Basle Nomina Anatomica, Birminhham Revision, Jena Nomina Anatomica, IFAA, IANC, Parisiensia Nomina Anatomica, Roger Warwick, FCAT, and Terminologia Anatomica.

Terminologia Anatomica has already been linked. Note the other possible links: FCAT directs you to an article on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, and the rest do not exist. Nomina Anatomica clearly a subject that is not covered elsewhere in Wikipedia at the present time.

Links that add nothing to the article (at least in my opinion), but only make it harder to read, include all of the years – 1887, 1895, 1903, etc. – and all of the cities and countries – Basel, Switzerland, Spain, United States, Birmingham, Jena, Geneva, Oxford, etc.

Readers who follow these links will find absolutely no information relevant to this article. It seems to me that, at the present time, there is only one appropriate link (Terminologia Anatomica) in a fully “Wikified” article on Nomina Anatomica.

As to classification, it seems obvious: it’s an Anatomy article. It has to do with the history of the current, internationally accepted, standard anatomical terminology, as exemplified by the landmark publication of Terminologia Anatomica.

This is a niche article that is of potential interest to only a few Wikipedia readers. I personally was always curious about the fine print in the introductions to older anatomy atlases that referred to the “BNA”, the “PNA,” the “BR,” the “JNA” and the “NA” – What were they talking about? Who are these authorities? I found it fascinating to realize just how arbitrary modern anatomical terminolgy is, and what flimsy authority it rests on.

If you look up “NA,” “BNA,” “PNA,” “BR,” and “JNA” in Wikipedia, you will find that the first four do not list this article on their disambiguation pages, while the last produces a fascinating article on the Yugoslav People’s Army. Does this mean that we need more links? I don’t think so. The article should be linked to equally technical articles on certain subjects in human anatomy, but to link it more broadly would only invite information chaos.
