Help decide the future of Wikimania edit

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk), from Community Resources 21:32, 13 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Green Bank Logo.PNG edit

Thanks for uploading File:Green Bank Logo.PNG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:39, 23 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Isang Bansa, Isang Diwa edit

On 8 May 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Isang Bansa, Isang Diwa, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that while the national motto "Isang Bansa, Isang Diwa" was supposed to build a unified Filipino national identity, it was later denounced as being "the slogan of a fascist regime"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Isang Bansa, Isang Diwa. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Isang Bansa, Isang Diwa), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

A national contest for the Philippines edit

Hi, I came across your user page and you seem like a passionate and resourceful individual. Tell me, would the idea of running a national contest like Wikipedia:WikiProject Wales/Awaken the Dragon appeal to you? It could also include Tagalog wiki and Cebuan is it? The idea would be a contest with prizes to whoever improves the most content. You can see how successful it was at Wikipedia:WikiProject Wales/Awaken the Dragon/Article improvements and creations. Now my time is limited, I have my work cut out focusing on Wales and the UK (currentlyu setting up Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge but eventually I'd like to see this sort of thing scaled to worldwide. If WM Philippines think this is a good idea I could help you set something up but not sure I could commit to running it. But you're welcome to copy the idea and fund something. If you're interested in this I could help start something but it would be largely your responsibility I think. I was also thinking about proposing one for India. Through this we could target many of the poorer articles for the Philippines which badly need basic editing and see a general improvement in quality.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:34, 8 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for June 20 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of enacting clauses, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Isabela. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Oops, my bad. I wasn't aware of this, actually. Lately I've been busy improving Philippine-related pages on the Italian version of Wikipedia, that's why I uploaded so many images. Extended confirmed protection edit

Hello, Sky Harbor. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Invitation from Wikipedia Asian Month 2016 edit

Thanks for partipating Wikipedia Asian Month last year, and I hope you enjoy it. Last year, more than 7,000 articles contribute to Wikipedia in 43 languages in Wikipedia Asian Month, making us one of the largest event on Wikipedia. We will organize this event again in upcoming November, and would like to invite you join us again.

This year, we are lowering down the standards that you only need to create 4 (Four) articles to receive a postcard (new design), and articles only need to be more than 3,000 bytes and 300 words. We are also improving our postcard sending process, e.g. making the postcards right now, and collecting the address after the event ends without waiting other languges.

Wikipedians who create the most articles on each Wikipedia will be honored as "Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors". We will send you both digital copy, and a paper copy of the Ambassador certificate.

Thank you for considering! --AddisWang (talk)

Invitation to "target countries" discussion edit

Hello, Josh! Since you've been closely involved with the Filipino community for a long time, we're inviting you to a discussion on "target countries". You can help the product team at the Wikimedia Foundation create a new list of countries and metrics to replace the "global south" concept in our process with something more relevant. Interested? Learn more about this discussion and share your perspective. (This message is available in more languages.) Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins edit

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers edit

Hi Sky Harbor.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open! edit

Hello, Sky Harbor. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Incubator Cleanup edit

Hello, Josh.

I am an administrator on Wikimedia Incubator, and I'm trying to clean up some old tests. In particular, there are still remnants of those Babayin tests sitting there at incubator:Wp/tgl, incubator:Wt/tgl, and incubator:Wq/tgl. As far as I can tell, the two people who actually contributed to those tests are both pretty scarce these days, so you seem to me to be the best person to consult about this.

In theory, projects rejected by the Language Committee can remain open on Incubator, can be improved, and can be submitted again. In practice, (a) these projects have not been edited in a meaningful way in several years, and (b) the impression I have from the discussions at Meta are that these will no way, no how, ever be approved. So under those circumstances, we would normally delete the projects on Incubator.

There are a couple of options here:

  • The normal practice when truly deleting a project is to archive it to an XML file in case anyone wants it in the future, or wants to transfer it to Incubator Plus or some other non-Wikimedia wiki. We can certainly do that.
In truth, the Wikiquote test project has only a Main Page and an administrative template. The Wiktionary test project has a Main Page, an administrative template, and one other page ("Imeldific"). The Wikipedia test project does have a handful of pages.
  • What you could do—what I might have suggested at the time—is to create a new namespace within the Tagalog projects solely for pages in Babayin. This way, those pages could be allowed to exist semi-autonomously while not interfering with the rest of content of the projects.

So I wonder if you can tell me how you might like to handle this situation. There's no particular rush, and in particular I'm sure that if you actually want to create a new namespace, some community discussion will be needed. But if we can put closure on this one way or the other I'd greatly appreciate that. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:46, 7 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi StevenJ81, and thanks for informing me of this. I have been traveling the last few weeks and I was unable to go online. However, know that I will look into this, and I look forward to working with you to come up with an amicable solution to the problem. --Sky Harbor (talk) 02:46, 11 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
