Assistance with Notability

I am into art you could say, studied at CIA and I hold a MA. I heard about wikipedia and I was intrigued. Looking through the artists and painters, I noticed allot of people were listed and it seemed they had no careers. So I added myself, egotistical yes, but artists tend to have a big ego LOL. I have also decided to start adding other artists who have great careers and should be here. So how do you show notability? I was still working on the article before it got flagged. I haven't posted my awards yet, and the magazines articles about my work. I also haven’t started listing my public works projects. User:wer2chosen 9:40 am January 4, 2007 (MTN)

There are four guidelines that must be kept in mind when writing articles of this nature. The first is Wikipedia:Notability (people). This goes into the details of what is generally considered to make a person notable in general. There is no guideline specifically for artists (however there is for musicians, if it will help you get a better idea, linked off that page). The second big area is Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons which all articles about a living person must adhere to, so take a look. The third and fourth areas are Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Autobiography, which an article on yourself or personal colleagues may run into. I cleared up the background information that would have been original content. I added ref tags on the bottom with the public references that people could get this information from. Having had works placed in galleries is a very weak claim to notability, however since art is a field that I do not know much about at all, I can not say if this is sufficient. Here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to nominate the article for deletion with a suggestion to userfy (meaning move the content to your userpage), since I'm taking this discussion to mean that you contest the proposed deletion that exists. This will allow more people to voice their opinion that have more knowledge than I do on the subject. It is fine to delete it, but if you check my references I added. I am included in books listing well known artists. I sell 20-30 paintings a year. My work is collected in America, Thailand, Sweden. I have had three reviews of my work in American Artist and American Painters magazine. I have received honors in over 20 juried shows, including one in Paris, my work has been in over 50 galleries. Okay, the citations needed are the titles, authors/editors, and dates of publication of the books you mention. The shows where you have been juried (and placed, most importantly) must be cited and notable in their own right. Not every art gallery is notable, and most private collections are not. Sales of your work are completely unverifiable unless they are of a level where they would be a matter of public record, in which case we would likely not be having this discussion. The AfD discussion will not close until consensus is reached, so you have time to improve the article, although as the Conflict of Interest guideline states, this work should be predominantly done by someone other than yourself. skrshawk ( Talk | Contribs ) 17:33, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

I added those, except for the dates maybe. I will have to get them from Amazon, but it is actually funnier if the page gets deleted. I was going to ask an editor I have worked with to see if this would make an interesting article. I have not listed numerous items, due to I need to verify dates and make sure that I have permission from the owners. I also just added it so that others could expound on it. You can go ahead and delete it, I just think it is hilarious that mine gets deleted and is verifiable and you have articles on painters who cannot make a living at art, and cannot get listed in the directories I have cited. I don't see any books listed(give me a moment to look at them), and no indication that the exhibitions you referenced were juried or if you received any awards from them. I don't mean to offend, but a rural county fair can have a juried show, but is not notable for Wikipedia purposes. There is no problem listing a book if you have all of the pertinent information - permission is not needed to simply list the title, author, and date of publication. Books published by a non-vanity press are generally considered notable, so that may very well bolster your claim. Alley Highlights

I do not have the publish dates for the magazine articles and all the news articles. I asked the one person who keeps track of those things to get me the dates, my mother! LOL

You are right about juried shows, you would find the one in N.Y a pretty decent show by most standards. (LOL) Some of them have funny rules regarding using them in your promotion though. When you work with Galleries and do shows, they want to control those images and the resulst of those shows. That was why I originally listed only the smaller shows. I thought it would be better for the someone affiliated with the show to add those. The article had only been there a day and those in the art field are nto that speedy. This has been useful in learnign how to use wikipedia. It does seem arbitraty though, when you look through others that have articles.

On a side note how do you get the timestamp to work? I have to manually type it. When I click teh time stamp button . I do nto see my name and time? Thank you for taking the time. There are some people who I feel should seriously be here. Barb Sargent and Mark Yasnchack for two. I added myself as a way to learn how to submit articles and such. What i am learning here will help me in the future.

I see your point about that list. I will seek out some help in cleaning that up - no one person can tackle that. I will be back later tonight, possibly with a small cabal if one can be summoned from the Village Pump. (I'm assuming this came from List of American artists?)

Thank you. The only reason I even added mine, was when I saw these in there. The one I struck out, actually is listed in the Index of Artists. Imagine that you have a chain of McDonalds and found out that wikipedia was full of fry-cooks, how would you feel. You would nto be upset if you saw the founder, CEO, and people with larger chains, but a fry-cook. LOL If you all want help, I can be of assistance.
