Zinta's team edit

I'd mention it, certainly. But if she hasn't personally been involved in a significant way with the management of the team that has regularly received reliable coverage, considering the recentness of the story, I wouldn't necessarily give much more than you proposed.

The extant three sentences might be mergable into two, though. Maybe something like, "In 2008, Zinta, Ness Wadia, and a group of others purchased the Mohali Twenty20 football team of the Indian Premiere League for $76 million dollars. They have since renamed the team Kings XI Punjub."

And I wouldn't say your previous draft was at all bad, but you're probably right in thinking that this article, given all that's happened, is probably going to be scrutinized very closely by the FA people. John Carter (talk) 16:08, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you mean the infobox image, I think it's beautiful. My only reservation regarding your phrasing would be the word "the", which can be seen as indicating that she is the sole owner of the team. Maybe changing that to "one of the owners" would be preferable. Yeah, it is kind of redundant, but it might read strange to some if we referred to a group of people as "the owner". John Carter (talk) 16:32, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I too think that the 2 sentences on the IPL team is adequate, as of now. As IPL continues, and she engages herself more in the game, more sentences, and even a new subsection may be needed.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:46, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
The word "won" might read a bit strange. Was there some sort of contest prior to the purchase that was "winnable"? If not, then maybe just "acquired" or "got" might be preferable. John Carter (talk) 17:10, 20 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thats brilliant Shahid! Well done!!! Developed so quickly too! You should do this more often!!! I'm feeling very lethargic today so won't be editing again. I;ve just been reading the Howard Hughes and related articles after seeing the Aviator again last night. What an amazing character!! I wonder just how many Hollywood classic starlets he bedded! Kate Beckinsale I think is one of the best looking actresses around today. She's really got that classic Hollywood look hasn't she ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:23, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah.. I am busy... I start work this week so I won't be on Wikipedia that often, though I will try to make an attempt to come on as often as possible. OMG!! life is so stressful!!! LOL.. So how are you these days??? Busy editing I see.. eh?? =) Anyways, wish you all the best on Zinta's FAC. Keep up the good work my friend!! You're truly an inspiration for us!! Shahid, if you are able to catch Tashan this weekend, let me know if it is good!! I am anxiously waiting to watch the movie. --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 18:43, 21 April 2008
Thanks!! ;) --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 16:33, 23 April 2008
Yeah, I saw it two weeks back!!! The film was not bad!!! Anyways, you going to watch Tashan? The reviews are quite mixed, ranging from excellent to bad. --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 18:35, 25 April 2008
I was looking through the "First Day First Show" responses from different sites, with the audience reactions being really mixed. The critics have severely criticized the movie, with the exception of a few. Out of the cast, Kumar & [Kareena] Kapoor have walked away with most of the accolades, with [Anil] Kapoor not being far behind. I really feel sorry for Khan, as he has received so much, I repeat so much criticism. Many of them were like what did he see in the role... LOL.. Anyways, just like you, I still want to watch the film, and then I will decide for myself. As for the reviews, most of them are negative.. LOL.. For Kapoor's page, we are only allowed to use reviews from reliable sources... but for Tashan's page... will be adding reviews from non-rs too?? --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 01:37, 26 April 2008
I understand your concern Shahid!!! LOL... Thanks! So how are you doing these days?? You are also not making that many edits these days... ;) --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 03:10, 30 April 2008
From Sept 07 to April 08, I was busy with University. Now that University is done, I am busy working. OMG, life can be so stressful!!! LOL. Yes, I have seen Tashan. The film was not as bad as people projected it to be but it was definitely below my expectations. I was expecting something like Dhoom 2. Have you seen it?? --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 16:53, 30 April 2008

Suggestion edit

Dude, your article has been waiting for a year and a half at LOCE? That's not cool. Go to Scartol's or Finetooth's talk pages and ask them specifically to copy edit the article for you. Both of them have edited very long articles that were FACs and that passed for me. Cry - be pathetic, but be very nice. Tell them you will owe them a huge favor, whatever it may be. Or I could owe it (like I could do anything but stuff an article they want stuffed). Just a suggestion. It's FAC time, so there is no more pride, only scraping the ground, doing whatever it takes to get your article passed. --Moni3 (talk) 20:55, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes as with other cinemas I love those melodramas and art films. Some of the Turkish films remind me of Kiarostami. I added about ten films so far. We now have about 65 films. I'll aim to put about 200 odd in that category in the next few weeks, Turkish and Greek cinema in my mind has long been one of the least developed areas of film and they are both highly productive industries with many admirable films. I think I'll aim to get the most acclaimed or successful films onto here, fill in some gaps. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:48, 23 April 2008 (UTC) Oh yeah India in the UK is known for their huge passion for Bollywood films and cricket. Yes I'm very tired!!! I'll be getting RSI!! I've fixed about 75% of them today anyway. Then the infoboxes and proper maps have to be added and also they have to be project tagged and then of course some provinces have hundreds of missing districts -I think you were right soon enough this will amass to over 200,000 but it is basic structural work that really needs doing as a foundation which after 7 years of wikipedia is pretty appalling that its taken so long to sort out. The uneven coverage is exemplified by Brazil on here. It makes wikipedia look like a joke as only on the surface are there good articles, the rest are 99% shocking!! I'm surprised you haven't got nearer 20,000 edits by now. Did you forget to change the display? In fact I would have estimated you have about 25,000 edits if I was to hazard a guess. What is your current edit count now? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 22:13, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Zinta in cover edit

"Zinta was the first Indian actress to be featured on the cover of the first Indian issue of the Marie Claire magazine." Compare this sentence with "Zinta was featured on the cover of the first Indian issue of the Marie Claire magazine".

The first sentence is MoS-wise very bad—two "first"s. That's why I edited the sentence. At least, remove the second "first", so that the sentence would be "Zinta was the first indian actress to be featured on teh cover of the Indian edition/issue of Marie Claire.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:36, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Zinta edit

Sorry, I had been rather busy assessing articles for the past day or two, and didn't review my watchlist that much. "Acting" is probably better than "being an actress", as it's a bit shorter. Regarding the question I would definitely say "film actress" rather than just "actress" first, to help differentiate between film acting and stage acting, both of which count as acting. Regarding the was/is question, that's more or less dependent on what the subject has said. If she's ever said she's "given up" on the stage, then "is" would be inappropriate, as she has said she will not return to the stage. If she's said she likes stage performing and hopes to continue, than "is" is definitely called for. If no such statement either way has been made, than I'd go for "is" until such a statement is made one way or another. You would probably know the details to that better than me, though. John Carter (talk) 15:24, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

The specific phrasing you proposed gives the impression that the stage work isn't acting. Maybe something like "In addition to acting in films, Zinta has written a series of popular columns for BBC News Online South Asia, and is also a regular stage performer." Granted, the word "also" might be unnecessary, but it might help with the undefinable "flow" a little too; it probably isn't absolutely necessary, though. John Carter (talk) 16:09, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
If that's the case, and I assume it is, then you might want to expand that section to say that more clearly somewhere in the article. Right now, the article doesn't specificy what the stage work is, unfortunately. Maybe your phrasing would be the best way to go, with some content added to the "Stage performances" section to more clearly indicate the nature of the stage performances. John Carter (talk) 16:25, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
The image is a bit over the top, but it also gets across the idea that the stage shows aren't dramatic reenactments very well. I'd probably use it. John Carter (talk) 17:08, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Your call. Personally, my questions would be whether, given the subject's age, her business interests might expand beyond the team at some point. If that were to happen, then I would think retitling it "Business interests" would make most sense. For what we have right now, maybe "Cricket team ownership" might work best. Also, any ideas on how you want to address the newer comments on the FAC page? John Carter (talk) 13:34, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Was actually referring to Tony's comments regarding the lead and whatever. I tend to agree that the comments of the party who seems to think current infoboxes should be changed to accurately reflect his views are not likely to be given much regard.
Regarding the proposed changes, providing plot details and such about Heaven on Earth but not Har Paal looks a bit unbalanced. NRI should be changed and/or linked to, as I personally am not 100% sure what it means, although I'm fairly sure in this context it means non-resident Indian. If it does, remove the abbreviation and link directly to the phrase. The phrase "battered wife who bore years of domestic violence" could be shortened to just "battered wife" unless the character snapped and did something interesting like kill her husband, in which case that should be added. And the use of the language "confirmed project" to describe a film a few months away from release is probably unnecessary. You might also pipe a link to Cinema of Canada from the phrase "Canadian film". The section about Heroes might be abridgable to something like, "An earlier production, Heroes, is scheduled for release in June 2008." John Carter (talk) 14:11, 2 May 2008 (UTC)üReply
I do think that changes like that are what he is referring to; while the longer constructions might be more technically clear and accurate, if the meaning is fairly obvious from context we may not need to be that technical. John Carter (talk) 14:59, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dreams may come true edit

Shahid I had the most AMAZING! dream last night and it has given me an inspiration to write a novel. Lets just say locations include a salvage operation of the coast of Chios in an underwater cave which lay along the route that Paul the Apostle made to Malta, and an excavation in a church just outside Celje in SLovenia. It really was one of those inspiring dreams you have from time to time. Every night for me I have the most creative dreams imagniable -how my mind ever thinks of these I don't know but this was something special - I wish I could document it and get it into writing. If I could remember it all and put it into writing, who knows I could concentrate on being a writer ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 08:17, 26 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't know - I think it is definately something I should pursue. Even as a little boy of about 7 I was writing stories inspired by the Enid Blyton and Hardy Boys books. I won prizes at school for creative writing competitions too. I had some poems published too in some Wales young poets thing as well when I was about 14 which published the poetry of teenagers across Wales in a single book. Everyone at school always said I should be a writer and I had a very vivid imagination. I would be following in the footsteps of many people in my family but writing novels takes a great deal of time as ther eis so many possibilities of writing which takes years of practice. But my ideas are very much using elements of world cultures and classic art and architectural locations- you know like I work on on wikipedia and writing the coolest book I can using such locations and elements. Kind of like a Tomb Raider in a book but much more complex and encyclopedic ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 09:57, 26 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

LOL its funny that when I sleep my mind seems to be far more active than when I'm awake. Its allows my mind to wander and discover new things. The brain is an amazing thing isn't it. I know but there is so much needing doing at shock sub stub level to make important articles even a worthy stub that I have little time to sit down and write a single article. Very few people seem to care about other countries in the world other than the one they live in on here so these articles end up being crap. I on the other hand think of the world from a neutral point as if it were a 3D map where each country should be receiving even coverage. It is an encyclopedia so most should be half decent articles and not neglected sub stubs like we have on here in the thousands. The only way to address this is to begin to do something about , which unfortunately takes up most of my editing time. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:38, 26 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Amitabh edit

Judging by the edit conflict a few minutes ago where I lost some work I gather you've noticed my changes to Amitabh. It isn't perfect yet and it is probably way too pro-Amitabh for some people but it needed basic development to build a good article upon. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:20, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

What I'd like you to do for me is to find some reviews of Amitabh's film and performances from the 1970s and early 1980s and some quotes from critics so we can incorporate them into the text and get some idea of his critical reception. Agreed? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:23, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Great. Yes I wasn't responsible for those references. Given that I am not deeply knowledgeable about his career I've expanded it using what I could. I am always afraid to edit a Bollywood article in that you may disapprove of my edits and revert them completely as you are the expert not me, but I see his article as a core article, particularly for Indian cinema and Bollywood which really should be a priority to write the best article we can on him and give him a high quality article to match his status ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:31, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

After Preity I strongly think we should try to take his article to FA as it is so important to Bollywood. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:32, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

As I am not up on the subject matter of his films perhaps you could fill in some information on the roles he played more and the content of his films also. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:34, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

E.g "In 1976 he was once again cast by director Yash Chopra in his second film, Kabhi Kabhie, a romantic tale in which Bachchan starred as a young poet named Amit Malhotra who falls deeply in love with a beautiful young girl named Pooja played by actress Rakhee Gulzar. The emotional eclectic of the dialogue and softness of the subject matter proved a direct contrast to some of Amitabh's earlier grittier action pictures and those he would later go on to play." This was based on observation (it seems to be true) but needs some more discussion like this and reviews. Expanding the 2000s section with reviews and everything should be very easy ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:38, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

If I was to cite an Indian director that seems to be impressive I'd say Yash Chopra. He seems like the sort of film director that I rave about. Not exactly what you would call a resemblance is there lol. Then again Lenny Kravitz's father looks like Woody Allen. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 08:41, 28 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Sorry I didn't word it better. What I meant was that you often log in and then say you have to leave a few minutes later lol. At other times though it seems you have hours on here!!. Yes I did wonder, your edit history still shows you are here on many occasions on most days (which is great!) but I wondered why your periods on here seemed to be shorter than before, it seems like you have to log in and out at various times throughout the day, you haven't got a younger sister fighting for the PC have you?? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 09:52, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I can't believe that in adding all of Dasgupta's films I have created 5 film articles missing from National Film Award for Best Film. Aren't these acclaimed films? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:34, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

However there of course many excellent films and talented film directors and actors from the other industries too but a Bengali or Marathi art film for instance is likely to be very different from a mainstream Bollywood blockbuster such as KANK or something. With Bollywood though I've noticed there seems to be a lesser focus on film directors than in other industries and more attention on the movie stars themselves. This is the impression I've got from it on wikipedia anyway as some of the film directors who you would think would have full articles by now like Yash Chopra etc are still stubs. It seems like many of the other industries seek out actors who appear in Hindi films to appear in their films to raise their profile but are often not as well financed as Bollywood companies. Didn't you say Zinta had to accept a pay cut to appear in some art films? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:15, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I absolutely agree. But thats illustrated what I said exactly. Dasgupta 5 of his films have won a National Film Award for Best Picture and correct me if I was wrong but isn't this an incredible achievement given the huge number of films that India producers in total? Yet his article is still a stub and it doesn't even mention this either ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:38, 29 April 2008 (UTC) Another director who looks impressive who Dwaiypanc made me aware of is Mrinal Sen. Very fit looking. I find it so funny that an Indian actress is called Helen!! Helen is a popular name here in Wales. In fact I used to have a girlfriend called Helen Peplow when I was about twelve! A name such as Helen Jones or Helen Morgan is a popular welsh name. Its also funny to see several Indian actors called Johnny ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:44, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I never knew that there was a lasting influence with names. I mean I've never heard of an Indian called James or Ian or Bob or something. The vast majority Indian people I've met or have come across or have a knowledge of e.g Shadrukh Khan etc have Indian names even here in the UK. One of my best friends in school was a guy called Usman Hanif who was Punjab, also friends with Azhar Naheem. Dil Hai Tumhaara edit

Hi! Sorry, I meant to reply but forgot. Please go ahead with editing the article. I don't have the time right now to sit down and really look at articles (mostly I just do minor copyediting between work, heh heh), so give the Dil Hai Tumhaara article the overhaul it needs. IPL subsection in Zinta edit

With the craze of IPL increasing, and Zinta involving herself totally with the team, I thought it was time for a separate subsection. I created the subsection. See if you wish to add more.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:39, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Well, here (name of the IPL sebsection) I am in two minds. It's true the using the full form lengthens the name of the subsection. On the other hand, the acronym IPL is not that well-known (unlike, for example, UNICEF or WHO). So, it's better to retain the full name. Let's keep it as it is (full name). If someone raises the issue, it can be tackled.--Dwaipayan (talk) 08:25, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
consult John. Being a non-Indian, he will be able to give an unbiased view.--Dwaipayan (talk) 11:00, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
"Ownership of Indian Premier League cricket team"—even longer :)--Dwaipayan (talk) 11:26, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Again, IMO, the present title is ok. Let's see what John (or anyone else) has to say. Otherwise, don't need to be bothered by this.--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:23, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Shahid, I'd help, but I'm nearly overwhelmed just now with another article at FAC, peer reviews, and keeping promises I've made about other articles. If things settle down, I'll see what I can do. I tried that earlier and it came up with the same list. Don't worry about it anyway. It won't even create the graphs for mine like it does to yours. I see you nearly have 20,000 edits which I thought would be more correct. See what I mean. Batang Hari Regency places like were missing which have over 1/5 million people and cover and area of well over 5000 km 2. There are thousands of places in Jambi province alone and I get criticised for taking the initative to create new categories like Category:Cities, towns and villages in Jambi which only had one town in the start with and start to develop it! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:28, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mmm things are not going as I had hoped. FA's have become ridiculously tedious as if people really don't want articles promoted. My concern is that an article a contemporary Indian actress is not as easy to write a stunningly encyclopedic article on and some of the content can appear too trivial or "unencyclopedic" to some editors. I personally think it is about as good as an article on a modern Indian actress that could be possibly written and gives me all the information I could possibly want to know about her which is the most important thing. But I do feel that the subject is partly to explain for negative reaction to it. I'll try to have a read agian later and see if I can enhance any sentences ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:45, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Zinta contd edit

Hi! the title of the subsection now takes a back seat. Tony has objected, and so the article cannot pass FAC. That's it. Unless there is someone who does the copyedit. have you tried to contact people?--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:08, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey hey hey...do not do that.... when someone is copyediting, please do not change/revert those, until s/he is finished. Copyedits are done by an uninvolved user with some goal/objective in mind, and overwriting their work would only go on to make the process complex (if not piss off the editor). So please refrain from doing so, even if the changes seem unwanted to you. That's the basis of a new pair of eyes. You and I have become so much accustomed to the prevailing text, that many changes may seem unnecessary (and even , sometimes, worse). But that does not mean we'll go on to revert those.
Please let the editor go on with the copyedits. After he is done (or even during his work), you can ask him in talk page if you did not like something, or, have a better idea. But please do not interfere. This is in the best interest of the article. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:48, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not only that sentence, changes in some other sentences were also made. If needed, just pop your question to the copyeditor, or, in the article's talk page. To avoid some comment in FAC, you can say there that an active copyedit is going on.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:56, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes I can understand the significance of the article. And that's precisely why I am asking you to hold on. If needed, tell your concern in the talk page/ to the copyrditor. He will change again accordingly. It's my feelings that we Indian editors tend to use complex sentences (one very exemplary exception being Nichalp). So, just let the prose be modified, and express your concerns in teh talk page.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:10, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I thought Sandy Georgia said ages ago it was FA quality?? Why doesn't she speak? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:05, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well to put things in perspective see the missing settlements in Bhamo Township with comprises of 1/18th of Kachin State. There are 14 states/divisions in Burma. So basically your timesing this by 18 and then multiplying by 14 and that justs Burma!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:58, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I got your message in the R2 unit edit

Okay, against my better judgment (and the huge stack of work staring me in the face), I'll take a crack at copyediting this article. Please be aware that I don't have time for substantial content discussions or review of sources. I'll be focusing on the prose style only. I'll put comments and questions on the article talk page; please respond to them as soon as possible so that we can fix what needs fixing with all speed. Please note that as a schoolteacher, my time will be very fragmented today; I probably won't get to much until tomorrow (Saturday, 8AM EST or so).

Allright, let's get started! – Scartol • Tok 15:29, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry if this seems short, but it looks there's a bit of a problem. this edit makes a change that I requested ("cinemas" to "films"), but it also undoes a sentence rewrite which I took some time composing:

In later films she played a variety of character types; this work has transformed the image of Hindi film heroines.

becomes

She would subsequently take on a variety of character types, and in doing so has been credited with changing the image of Hindi film heroine.

I feel that the latter sentence is much more unwieldy and returns us to exactly the kind of dense wordiness that I was called in to remedy. (Tony is usually very critical of overly wordy prose, and I think the latter sentence is an example of this.)

I hate to be blunt, but I'd hate to go through the article and make repairs to the prose, and then have it changed back. Thoughts? – Scartol • Tok 16:36, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your response. I've been editing between classes and I'm feeling really rushed. Everything you mentioned makes sense, and it's possible that I worded it too hastily. I may have jumped the gun in my comments above. I know how you feel about wanting to make it through the FA process, and I'm willing to help out with that. Hopefully I'll be able to think more clearly tomorrow, and see what I can do about that sentence we discussed in the meantime. Cheers. – Scartol • Tok 18:17, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
