Essay critique

I have created a new essay and would welcome some critique on the talk page there:

Valjean (talk) (PING me) 22:59, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Will do! Happy to help. At first glance, looks like a great and much needed essay. — Shibbolethink ( ) 15:11, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks so much for your improvements. Really great stuff. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 18:08, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
Will add more! Just consumed by unpacking and other such life-stuff atm, but I like the essay and would love to help out further   — Shibbolethink ( ) 20:07, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
For some unknown reason, I don't think I knew you were a physician, so we're both in medical fields. I'm a retired PT, with a PA education. The same for my wife, but she is also a nurse. I share your interests in skepticism, alternative medicine, and quackery. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 21:58, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
Hahahha yeah, that still sounds weird to me, as I've only been a "physician" for like 32 days!
But I'm glad to see we have very knowledgeable (credentialed) persons like yourself out here combatting misinformation with their retired time! I figured you had some training but I didn't know it was that far ranging... I hope I have as much gas left in the tank when I retire!! :)) — Shibbolethink ( ) 14:47, 23 June 2023 (UTC)
Well, you have my unreserved respect and support. You have chosen a great profession that is unfairly maligned by altmedders and quacks. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 17:01, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

Half a barnstar for you!

For excellence in editing cooperatively in the GA review for Covid-19 pandemic. The other half goes to Ozzie10aaaa. Nice work! —Ganesha811 (talk) 22:20, 23 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Ganesha :) I'm just really honored to have been a part of making such an excellent (and important) article meet GA standards! — Shibbolethink ( ) 01:04, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

‘Ridiculous,’ says Chinese scientist accused of being pandemic’s patient zero

I'm not sure where this ought to go, but it seems like it should go somewhere:

  • Cohen, Jon (23 June 2023). "'Ridiculous,' says Chinese scientist accused of being pandemic's patient zero". Science.

XOR'easter (talk) 16:00, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

It's honestly so wild that Hu had to deny this lol.
I'm not sure it's DUE enough to include even the denial, but the fact that this is being reported in Science means maybe we should mention it lol. — Shibbolethink ( ) 19:32, 25 June 2023 (UTC)
It's also a sober secondary reference for the contents of the ODNI report, which could be useful somewhere, I suppose. XOR'easter (talk) 20:08, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

Short note

Hi @Shibbolethink. I wanted to let you know that I saw the COI accusation against you and thought it was egregious. I am glad it was shut down immediately and, honestly, think that Wikipedia should have a clearly articulated and enforced COI exception for anyone involved with non-profit work just to save everyone some time. Anyway, keep up the great work. Ppt91talk 19:29, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

I'd like to second that. Subject matter experts are valued here, and to have someone like that diss you is beyond the pale. Keep up the good work. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 19:33, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
I'll third that--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 22:40, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks folks :) It means a lot. I like it around here, and plan on sticking around!! No worries, I think this sort of thing just comes with the territory!
But I will tell you just so nobody gets concerned: I start my intern year of residency tomorrow (in neurosurgery) and I think it's highly likely I won't be around much for a while as a result... but I am quite confident I'm leaving my old haunts in exceptionally good hands. Good luck and good vibes! — Shibbolethink ( ) 01:47, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
@Shibbolethink "On the next episode on WP:TROLL: does being so intimately familiar with the human brain trigger COI for articles related to the homo sapiens? We'll pull out a dummy and speculate wildly!" Jokes aside, that's really impressive, and congratulations! I do hope you'll be back whenever time permits. :-) Ppt91talk 16:26, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

Wikipedia Neurosurgery Award: for putting the right hat on the quacks.

Firstborn hypothesis

Kudos on creating the firstborn hypothesis article. I had planned on doing so about two years ago, but completely forgot about it. Around that time I first saw a very strange hobbyist video on YouTube that was created by someone with a lot of time on their hands. The video must have taken them a month to put together. Basically, they ran through the entire hypothesis, from soup to nuts. I wish I could remember it, but I'll see if I can find it, as it was most comprehensive. (Was it your video?) I think I first saw it on Hacker News, so I'll look through their archives. Do you have any plans on expanding this article? Viriditas (talk) 08:46, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
