As a relatively new user of Wikipedia, I am still brushing up on Wikiquette myself, and might not be able to give you a completely factual answer. However, as far as I am aware, there is no acceptance procedure in becoming a WikiProject Adelaide participant. I believe that by listing yourself as a member, you are primarily stating your devotion to articles concerning Adelaide at large, and thus, the commitment required is that which you set for yourself. The WikiProject Adelaide page serves as a reference point and place of collaboration. As I understand it, it is not an exclusive club, but rather symbolic of your interests. You don't have to be a participant to edit Adelaide-related articles, but perhaps by listing yourself as one, you can be helped in that pursuit. --Cyberjunkie 03:31, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Lake names

Hi and welcome! For lake names, especially the famous ones like Lake Albert, we don't usually add a qualifier like ", Africa" - it's like London or Paris. If there were additional obscure Lake Alberts, then they would be "Lake Albert (Utah)" or some such. So I moved it back. Also, redirs to redirs don't work - when you move a page, look at the "what links here" and fix all redirs listed to point to the article at its new name. Stan 06:57, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Stan, I've created a short article for Lake Albert, South Australia, and thought I'd made a disambiguation page for Lake Albert Referring to them both. I was in the process of finding the links that pointed to the original Lake albert and fixing them to point to Lake Albert, Africa. in future, where there is a common name with an international place, and they have already taken the name, either add a disambig link to that page, or if there are numerous places of the same name, make a separate disambig page and leave the name of the page intact. cheers. Article nomenclature in the presence of ambiguity is a whole big metatopic in Wikipedia; dig down under Wikipedia:Naming conventions and its subpages to find all kinds of debate. For instance, one could argue that the South Australian lake is more notable, because how many people have actually been to the African Lake Albert? Not as many I'll bet. But the African one plays a significant role in history, and if you did a worldwide poll "where is Lake Albert?", the answers (other than "I don't know") would be 99% "in Africa" and 1% "which one do you mean?". One way we use to approximate such a poll is to examine the results of a Google search on the term, although it's not totally reliable (Google skews towards people who make webpages :-) ). I'm satisfied with Xtra's solution, and will attempt to emulate it should the same problem arise again. I've also learned some more about world geography. It's interesting to observe the differing skew in Google vs Yahoo searches though (discounting Wikipedia hits). Google skews quite strongly to the African lake on the top of the list. Yahoo much less so. The first 10 hits on Yahoo included three for Uganda, and two each for South Australia and New South Wales. The next page evened it to 3 all, and added one each for Alaska and Ontario (as well as two for Albert Park Lake in Victoria). Google's only sponsored link was for Lake Albert, New South Wales. Both search engines also found a painter called Albert Lake as well.--ScottDavis 01:43, 2005 Jan 10 (UTC)

Port Augusta

Yes, I acted a bit hastily there - I was under the impression that most place articles don't include the county/state/country unless necessary for disambiguation purposes - I only noticed the rest of the Australian placenames after I did the move. Goolwa

Sorry, you're quite right. The main problem is that the article was pretty much a series of unconnected one-sentence paragraphs, making it look like a page of notes rather than an article. I've gone back to it and made a start (moving and combining text, adding a category), but I think that the text still needs to be fleshed out with a bit more detail for it to read well. My thinking was more along the lines of, rather than lump them all into biographical stub categories, they're more likely to be found and updated grouped in with the politicians. Australian wine regions

I'm popular tonight aren't I? ;) Hehe. I once lived in Merbein, Victoria for a very short time. Just down the road was a large Wolff Blass winery, and right behind it, acres and acres of wine growing grape vines. I categorised the entire area as a wine region until a proper article on the subject arrives. Again, it's a topic I'm lacking knowledge in. User:Humanbot update 13 June 2005

The spelling2 project (to work on secondary namespaces) was opened and finished. Progress charts will be available soon.

Version six-three tracks who made the edits, and rankings are available. Much of the work was done while I was asleep, explaining my low place ;).

The next project, which may even be released today, will probably fix incorrectly capitalised headings, particularly "See Also" and "External Links".

The mailing list has grown to 24 people and while that is very nice for my ego, it is rather difficult to send out updates. Categories at WikiProject Adelaide

Hey ScottDavis! Since we now have an outline of the South Australia category (thanks for adding that), do you think we should have a complete category skeleton, that is, a full outline of South Australia with Adelaide and its daughters off-shooting? Such an outline would better show editors which category to use. Conversely, it could also be horribly confusing and perhaps beyond the scope of the Project. Thanks for correcting my error

I made an error at Pacific Patrol Boat Program in converting 2500 nautical miles to 370 km. You corrected this to 4625 km. I was converting a lot of instances of 200 nautical miles (common sea boundary) to 370 km. For some reason that instance got caught up with it. Humanbot

Thank you for fixing a spelling mistake in MANOVA. I would just like to say that it should have been upper case instead of lowercase, as it was at the beginning of sentence. I fixed it, and it does not matter much. The only reason I let you know is in case that is a more general bug of the humanbot. So, if it was a rather unique human mistake rather than a computer program mistake, I can rest assured.

I just reverted the Narrambi Road link as it seems to have been agreed that Philip J. Rayment was right, and that that was the correct spelling. Just to let you know- I am in fact part of WP:WSS, so I know all about the extra templates, but since the page has been redesigned I find it a great pain to use them. possible duplicate articles

Despite the differences in distance estimates I'm going to say that they are one park and that Gammon Ranges National Park is a duplicate, because on the DEH website there is only one park with Gammon in the name that I can see and that's Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park. Split edits

It could sort of be done if the page was moved to the new name, reverted to the old article and then moved to the other aricle- thus duplicating the edit history on the two new pages. Other than that there is no easy way to shift/or assign edits between articles. The wiki could be smarter ;) --nixie 13:36, 31 July 2005 (UTC)

Lake Margaret Tasmania rave

My apologies. The words are obviously part of a ten page rave about having been a west coast tasmanian ( I lived there in the 70's) and the on-going relationship between the community, the hydro, politicians, as well as heritage etc etc. Very un-wiki. Apologies again.

If someone does something as stupid as changing "Stonehaven" to "Baird" all the way through the article, which clearly says he was given his title before he came to Australia, I am under no obligation to pick through all his edits looking for the few which might be valid. I'm sorry if you have formed that impression. I do get annoyed when people make stupid and ignorant edits to articles which I and other editors have put a lot of work into. List of place names

I've just been going through some of the Victorian ones on that list you made, adding mentions to a few disambig pages - I notice the ACT is missing though. Any chance of getting a similar list for that? Ambi 10:38, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

I think it might be an idea to start the ACT postcode list again from scratch - I have no idea what the "main postcodes" mean either. A Google search for "main postcodes" "australian capital territory" reveals nothing but Wikipedia results, which isn't very helpful. Would it be difficult to recreate it from the auspost.com.au list? Ah, thanks a lot. This ACT list is going to be particularly challenging, as most of the suburbs are named after someone, and many have at least one other place named after them as well (thus they all need seperate disambiguation pages instead of redirects). Ambi 13:08, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

I just ran into that with Belconnen - I ended up leaving it as a district, because all the other potential topics (the suburb, the town centre, and a couple of things located there) all came under the district and were mentioned fairly early in that article. I suspect Woden might be a similar situation (if there isn't anything elsewhere named that). I'm also leaving quite a few of these disambiguation pages to cleanup later, as quite a few of them really suck. :) Ambi 14:05, 10 September 2005 (UTC)
