Christchurch mosque shooting edit

Some of you know that I live in Christchurch. Regarding the Christchurch mosque shootings, just letting you know that I'm safely at home. Was marshalling at the school strike 4 climate when the Police asked us to help clear Cathedral Square. There are reports of 30 people dead swirling around... Yeah, I thought that enough people know where I live to be concerned. Thanks for stopping by, Rosie. Schwede66 05:18, 15 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
I am also glad you are safe. Such a terrible thing to happen. AIRcorn (talk) 09:34, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' newsletter – April 2019 edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2019).

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

  • Two more administrator accounts were compromised. Evidence has shown that these attacks, like previous incidents, were due to reusing a password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. All admins are strongly encouraged to enable two-factor authentication, please consider doing so. Please always practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.
  • As a reminder, according to WP:NOQUORUM, administrators looking to close or relist an AfD should evaluate a nomination that has received few or no comments as if it were a proposed deletion (PROD) prior to determining whether it should be relisted.

Drop caps? edit

What does your cleanup reason of "Drop caps", on the article Court of Appeal of New Zealand, mean? RJFJR (talk) 19:00, 16 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

@RJFJR: See MOS:HEADINGS for sentence case in section headings and MOS:CAPS for prose. The text is written in lawyer's style where lots of nouns are capitalised; on WP only proper nouns are to be capitalised. Schwede66 20:02, 16 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) edit

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

List of lakes of New Zealand edit

Hi Schwede66 - thanks for riding shotgun on the work I'm doing on the list of lakes - it's very easy to miss links that need dabbing. Thankfully I've nearly finished now - only Bay of Plenty and the biggie (Waikato) to do! Grutness...wha? 23:01, 4 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

No trouble. It's easy enough as I use a link identifier; dab links are highlighted yellow for me. Schwede66 23:30, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' newsletter – May 2019 edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2019).

  Guideline and policy news

  Technical news

  • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

  Arbitration

  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

Olympian edit

Hi Schwede66 - hope you're well. I'm still working through missing Olympians and created the article for Jotham Pellew. Are you able to find out more info about when he died and/or how? I've done a quick search but didn't find anything helpful. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 18:54, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Lugnuts: Thanks; unfortunately I'm not well (my wife has passed on her bug). Have added to the article. I did see that the subject got his car confiscated in 2001 but didn't think it appropriate to add this to the article. @Canadian Paul: I found the person's death date; you might want to add that to your database. Gayford edit

The guts of this is a tweet: "And welcome back to NZ - lol. Here's some other bottom feeding fish who I'd never met which feature as breaking news this weds 8pm on Prime TV, FISH OF THE DAY. - in the stunning COROMANDEL,". The Cone article itself might be worth inclusion, (although it says itself that its "antipathy is mean-spirited", and it's mainly notable because it was promoted as "Breaking News"), but this simple cryptic snark reply surely doesn't. - Snori (talk) 21:46, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Snori: Would it not be more appropriate to have this discussion on the subject's talk page? Schwede66 22:06, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. Now done. -Snori (talk) 22:41, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Requesting article deletion to make way for article move edit

Hi Schwede66. I'm requesting deletion of List of people who died in road accidents, which is a redirect to List of people who died in traffic collisions. The latter will be moved to the road accidents name and become a redirect to it. In other words, the current state of the articles will be swapped. Reason: "road accidents" is more encompassing than "traffic collisions", especially in cases where only one vehicle is involved. I sought consensus at Talk:List of people who died in traffic collisions, pinging two prolific editors of the page. One supported, nobody else commented, so I believe there's no dispute. Please delete the road accidents article. If you don't also do the move, I'll do it. Akld guy (talk) 22:43, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Have replied there. Schwede66 23:29, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia is not a forum edit

So don't come to my user talk page with your uninteresting political opinions that don't help build an encyclopedia, just cos you were annoyed that I reverted your removal of sourced content. Next time you do so you'll be reported as you are basically attempting to remove people whose views you disagree with from the climate change articles, and that is not acceptable especially given you were the one edit warring. We all know about the discretionary sanctions as it is stated at the top of the Thunberg page, they apply to you too and you are much more likely to get in trouble than me given your determination to remove sourced and reliable content, and your aggressive and inflammatory views which you insist on peddling on my talk page and on the Thunberg talk page. In Wikipedia we discuss neutrality, we don't let self-appointed editors dictate it, as you are clearly trying to do on the Thunberg talk page, I haven't been alone in commenting on this. See WP:NPOV. ♫ RichardWeiss talk contribs 11:22, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

You sound very wound up, Richard. Try and chill a bit. Once you achieve that, your talk page contributions, like the one above, may not be littered with falsehoods. Schwede66 07:37, 7 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Malte Brun (mountain) edit

Hi, about this change: since the source is not available online, can you confirm that the Malte-Brun mountain was named after Victor Adolphe Malte-Brun and not Conrad Malte-Brun, who was a more important geographer than his son Victor Adolphe? Furthermore, Victor Adolphe died after Julius von Haast and, by way of consequence, he was apparently still alive when his name was given to the mountain. Thanks, Seudo (talk) 13:36, 14 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Seudo: Thanks for your inquiry. Here's what it says in the book (formatting as per original):

Malte Brun: Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Malte Brun Range: Named by Julius von Haast after Victor Adophe Malte-Brun, the son of a famous Danish geographer.

Needless to say, not everything stated in a source is always correct. I have, on two occasions, submitted corrections to the editor of the above book. If you've got evidence that the above is wrong, I wouldn't stand in the way of getting things amended. I believe that von Haast has, on occasions, named things after people who he was corresponding with. Schwede66 09:53, 16 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Since the source says it explicitly it's perfectly okay (I couldn't find another source) and I will mention it on the French page of the geographer. Seudo (talk) 10:14, 16 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

DYK Foulden Maar edit

I got brave and submitted a DKY nomination (my first) for Foulden Maar. Unfortunately (sigh) I realised after I submitted it that my alternate hook was broken into two sentences when I'm pretty sure it should have been one! It would be pretty easy to rephrase but I can't figure out how to edit what I submitted in the template. Can you help? Many thanks! DrThneed (talk) 05:14, 16 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

  Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC seeks to clarify whether WP:OUTING should include information on just the English Wikipedia or any Wikimedia project.
  • An RfC on WT:RfA concluded that Requests for adminship and bureaucratship are discussions seeking to build consensus.
  • An RfC proposal to make the templates for discussion (TfD) process more like the requested moves (RM) process, i.e. "as a clearinghouse of template discussions", was closed as successful.

  Technical news

  • The CSD feature of Twinkle now allows admins to notify page creators of deletion if the page had not been tagged. The default behavior matches that of tagging notifications, and replaces the ability to open the user talk page upon deletion. You can customize which criteria receive notifications in your Twinkle preferences: look for Notify page creator when deleting under these criteria.
  • Twinkle's d-batch (batch delete) feature now supports deleting subpages (and related redirects and talk pages) of each page. The pages will be listed first but use with caution! The und-batch (batch undelete) option can now also restore talk pages.

NZ women in red edit

If you have time, can you help me please? Jools and Linda Topp are on the list of NZ women in red. Neither has an individual entry, nor come up in a search on their names, but the Topp Twins do have an entry. I’ve created a stub for Jools Topp in my sandbox, but don’t know how to do a redirect to the Topp Twins page. Please see my comment in my sandbox for more detail. Herewhy (talk) 04:34, 9 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Herewhy: Good to hear from you. I'm not quite sure what you are trying to achieve. Eventually, what we would need to have are three separate articles: Lynda Topp (note the spelling), Jools Topp, and Topp Twins. When that is in place, you don't need redirects. Or are you asking about a redirect for the time being, i.e. before those individual bio pages are created? Those redirects are in place already. Can you please clarify? Schwede66 10:11, 9 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Well, the first thing I did was look for a redirect for them, and was puzzled these weren’t in place already, and now I realise that it was me. I misspelt their names, I guess. Thanks for your clear reply. I will work on someone else now. Herewhy (talk) 19:47, 9 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
